Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Patreon Version

Comments

Thomas Yanez

I have always seen her suicide as something more selfish than atonement. She has an obsessive need to be "free". And everybody around her always had a plan for her : to train her, for her to be the first woman at that training place, to be a sidekick criminal, to be a wife, to return to the desert, etc. There wasn't any direction she could turn that somebody else wasn't influencing her path, and therefore it wasn't her "free" choice. So, as George said, before Simone tried to make it something more romantic, the only choice she had was simply to kill herself, a decision that she wholly made for herself.

I remember renting this movie when I was in high school. My dad and I were blown away by the narrative scope and what the films philosophical tones were it was awesome. I really hope the do Hero. I would like to see them watch Red Cliff which is a personal favorite of mine.

Happy Chinese New Year 🧧!! George and Simone.

Opti_Frog

Every path laid out before Jen by other people would limit her freedom, the thing she valued most. She jumped off the bridge, gaining her freedom, drifted away and was never heard from again. Whether Jen actually took her own life is not the point.

Even though I’ve seen this movie many times it was such a pleasure watching it again with you two. Bravo!!

Steve H

listen to the closing song too

Steve H

I wouldn't mind more films like this, but will the music be as good as this one.

Odd Thomas

As others have said, Hero, Flying Daggers and Golden Flower are all visually stunning but didn't hit me in the heart the way that Crouching Tiger did.

Who Are These People

Subbed back for a month just for this Patreon version. Good pick.

Lee

Would love to see you guys watch Wong Kar Wai and Johnnie To movies as well.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Haven’t seen this in years and kind of forgot just how much the ending tugs at your heart! Loved the added context from George’s comments. Ang Lee is fantastic, shame he hasn’t done much since “Gemini Man” but here’s hoping he comes out with something sooner rather than later.

Sir Jimmothy

I'm late to this one, but are you guys going to watch the sequel?

Robban6948

Oh my god, finally! I haven't been able to find a single streaming service for this one yet. You guys are the best!

dieselbeast

Just random suggestions assuming at least one of you haven't watched them in your personal time, Titanic, Troy (2004), Scarface 👍😊

JayF

This one has probably the best fight between two women ever. Great pick.

JayF

Kind of surprised George didn't mention Ziyi Zhang being in the cast. Hopefully they get to more of her movies. My favorite of hers is House of Flying Daggers. She was also in Hero and Rush Hour 2.

Odd Thomas

Yay! Interesting: your subtitles are slightly different to mine, but both conveyed roughly the same. I hope you return to Donnie Yen's Ip Man series too!

I actually liked Ang Lee's Hulk. People wanted a dumb smashy smash movie and got a metaphysical Greek tragedy. Plus: Jennifer Connelly.

Generators

i mean its not that far of a stretch that people wanted a smashy smash movie when the main character is a hero whos catch phrase is smash lol. but also, his hulk does physically look the worst, likely due to the early days of CG but he looks plastic, like a doll and he is the least beastial looking hulk imo (aside from Lou Ferrigno). my main issue with it is that he took it a bit too seriously, a polar opposite of current MCU hulk who is too silly. had there been a tiny bit more fun in his hulk, like a little Fifth Element vibe. it would've been awesome i think. there was also very little Hulk time, also, whats with the choice of villain, and those weird dog things.

JediLounger

I also wanted to voice my support of the first Hulk film. It is a tragic, Shakespearean type film that surpasses all but the absolute cream of the crop of the MCU films. It is also a bleeding edge science fiction film with depth that most films wish they had. Even 20 years later, this is still my favorite review. http://www.dvdjournal.com/quickreviews/h/hulk.q.shtml

You should watch the Life of Pi. It’s a beautiful movie.

56:41 for George cameo

Brandon Meng

Have not watched the reaction yet, just wanted to say how much I adore this movie. What a great surprise to see this pop up on the docket! I would say Hero is mandatory viewing if you received this positively.

COREY Ervin Scott-Johnson

I love watching George talk about where he is from, and the history and the proper way language and culture is depicted in these film. Wish I had this type of connection with my ancestors and culture, but sadly isn't in the cards because of colonization, slavery, etc. Love your guy's reaction.

Bench

Among my favourite movies. Wuxia is still so unknown in the west, despite entailing wonderful works of art. I really hope it does well on youtube, I would LOVE to see you guys react to Hero as well!

Odd Thomas

Speaking of atonement, you know what a great movie about that is? Atonement! Saorise Ronan, James Macavoy, Keira Knightley. Absolutely hearbreaking tale set during WWII.

Odd Thomas

There's a great film called Cike Nie Yin Niang, aka The Assassin (2015) that doesn't get enough recognition. Amazing martial arts tale - though I admit the pace isn't for everyone. It goes from lengthy, beautifully composed scenes to sudden bursts of incredible action, then back to slow again, but the slowness only makes the action that much more impactful imo. In fact, Lo from Crouching Tiger is in it!

Ian Forbes

Great, great film. So happy to have rewatched it after so many years. And George, I really appreciate you pointing out cultural and language elements as it furthers my appreciation and understanding!

Michael Kemmet

Agree with doing Hero if CTHD does well. For my tastes, CTHD is the better film in most respects, but George is completely correct in that Hero is visually amazing. (Not saying Hero is a bad film in any way, just that CTHD is so incredible.) George is also correct in that the Crane-Iron Pentalogy(CTHD is book 4) does not have an authorized English translation. Last info I have(2016) is that the English rights were tied up with The Weinstein Company. TWC produced a CTHD sequel that year based on the fifth, and final, book in the pentalogy. Michelle Yeoh reprised her role, but Ang Lee did not direct it. Zhang Ziyi was possibly approached to reprise her role(spoiler - she survives the jump in the books and later gives birth to Lo's child), but she wasn't interested without Ang Lee's involvement.

Calum Grace

Excellent movie, and was my introduction to wuxia back when it came out! Might be a long shot, and they're a little harder to find, but would love y'all to check out one of the older classic wuxia movies that partially inspired Ang Lee on this one, like King Hu's COME DRINK WITH ME, DRAGON INN, or A TOUCH OF ZEN - brilliant films all.

Calum Grace

Oh, and COME DRINK WITH ME, from 1966, features the first big film role of Cheng Pei-pei, the Jade Fox herself!

David S

You haven't seen Life of Pi? MUST. WATCH. It is a truly beautiful and inspirational movie.

Jack Burton

Please watch Hero. CTHD & Hero are two wonderful movies. I'd love to see Simone's reaction to Hero.
