Even before watching it, I'm sure this reaction is spot on. (I had to be the first to use that!).

Five Oh came from the original Hawaii FiveO TV show in the sixties and seventies. It was about the state police in the 50th state to join the US.

Jay

First time watching, I almost tuned out whenever Ziggy was on screen, just found him so annoying. On repeated watches, I won't say he's likeable but he's definitely more sympathetic (I love that they show him racked with guilt after killing Glekas). Last week, George said something like "I bet Frank wishes Nicky was his son". My guess is Ziggy feels the same way. I love Frank Sobotka but clearly, work has taken precedence over fatherhood. And I think a big reason behind Ziggy's desperation to prove himself in the criminal world was Frank recruiting Nicky, rather than himself, for the business with the Greeks. This show is too good!!

richard

No, Ziggy don't do it😔

Fuzzy

Cheese is one of my favourite new characters, he's played by Method Man, from Wu-Tang Clan.

Grumples

What are the chances of getting Deadwood onto a poll for next series or two?

JediLounger

Sorry you are sick George, I hope it does not disrupt your travel plans.

Spacedone

In the video when Blind Butchy mentions a man who "went to New York and got him some of that French connection" it made me wonder if either of you have ever watched the fantastic Gene Hackman movie 'The French Connection'? That's definitely one worth watching.

Persnickity

Just did a quick google search and apparently 5-0 does refer to the show Hawaii 5-0. The show was named that as a district number. I.e. Brooklyn 99.

Jeff K

Congratulations, George and Simone! You just met one of the absolute best characters on this show. I won't say specifically who, since he plays a massive role in future seasons so it might veer into spoiler territory.

Jeff K

Oh! And the new older white police officer with a mustache they introduced is Jay Landsman. As in, the real Jay Landsman that the character Jay Landsman is named after.

Stu84

What you said about Ziggy is true, it also applies to Prez. He makes a terrible street cop but put him in the office of a good detail and he shines, you go from hating him to loving him.. The character arcs in this show are so good.

Jay

I always forget he shows up this early, great to see him.

Jay

I'm sure David Simon aficionados will know that Mouzone's sidekick is played by DeAndre McCullough, but this is the first time I noticed George 'Blue' Epps in Butchie's bar. Talking about The Corner for anyone wondering, brilliant mini series from 2000. If you love The Wire and haven't seen that show, check it out. All 6 episodes are on YouTube,

Jeff K

I can't believe I've never watched The Corner. I always forget about it. I really need to both read the book and watch the series.

Jeff K

With Ziggy and the way Landsman is treating him, I've always just assumed it's because Ziggy immediately turned himself in, didn't even try to deny what he did, and confessed to it without any prompting. That, plus how completely broken he was, there was no need to try to rattle his cage.

Tenn Seven

At the end of the episode they weren't typing up warrants to get text messages; they didn't need them anymore since they saw the last text telling everyone to shut down. They were writing up to "take doors" or to raid the locations, as Kima told Beadie over the phone.

The shootout in ep 9 is my favorite fictional shootout of all time. Bunch of assholes waving guns, playing tough but scared for their lives, nobody knows shit about actual gunfights or even keeps their cool enough to aim. Everything's confusing and scary. Nothing's sexy or cool about it. Neither side gets even a single hit or what they want, and somebody else suffers instead.

Grand Moff Slackin'

I enjoy George’s assumption that an illegal prostitution ring tied to human trafficking would abide by sensible customer service practices. You sweet summer child. Never change.

George and Simone were laughing at the possibility of The Wire: The Musical, but what if I were to tell you that such a thing exists and it has a couple of actors from The Wire in it. It was a Funny or Die sketch from like a decade ago. The closest is comes to spoiling things is showing one or two characters from future seasons but without any real context. And there may be one or two things in there that you'd think are spoilers but it literally doesn't come up in the show and were made up for the sake of comedy for the sketch.

Yes and no. The original "Hawaii Five-O" TV series which started in 1968 (and incidentally, looks amazing in HD as it was shot on film!) refers to the state of Hawaii being the 50th state in the US and "5-0" is slang for police in the US in general. There is no State Police in Hawaii and each of the state's 4 counties has its own police force. There are a total of 8 patrol districts in the state. https://www.honolulupd.org/history/ https://www.honolulupd.org/organization/patrol-districts/

I've re-watched The Wire many many times. Season 2 remains my least favorite season but it's still a great season and leagues above most tv shows best seasons. I still don't care about any of the dock characters. Frank is okay, no strong feelings either way. Nick is BY FAR my least favorite Sabotka. Ziggy is annoying as hell but I find him the be the most compelling character of the family. I feel like if he weren't raised to believe that working the docks was his only option in life he would've had a way brighter future. He's way more tech savvy that the other Sabotkas(which isn't saying much) but for the beginning of the millennium just having as much knowledge about computers as he already did I felt could've helped him get a job elsewhere. Though it also doesn't help that Frank doesn't seem like he was the best father or family man in general. Ziggy feels like the type of person who was picked on and bullied from an early age and the only way to combat that even a little is by basically becoming a clown for those around him to try and gain some kind of approval. But being a clown got him laughs but not respect, plus they were laughing at him not with him for the most part. Like the guys at the dock kept encouraging him to get the duck to drink and laughing when it happens but as soon as the duck dies they act appalled at Ziggy or when the one guy from the docks was bullying Zig and the other guys tried to act like Zig could take him in a fight knowing the other guy would destroy Zig. This is all just my interpretation of Ziggy. It's weird saying this because he's so annoying but Ziggy is kind of the only Sabotka I've ever found myself kind of feeling sympathy for. With Frank, I understand why he does what he does and I can respect it but I've never really had that much of a connection to him though the actor is great(loved him on a show called Third Watch too). Nick on the other hand...I know Simone described him as a good guy trying to provide for his family, I'd just describe him as a guy trying to provide for his family.

Jeff K

I completely forgot about that! It also reminds me, it's not Wire related exactly, but Lance Reddick did one of the best Funny or Die sketches I've ever seen with "Toys 'R' Me." It's comedy perfection.

Ron Corleone

One last thing, on the topic of why Landsman treated Ziggy like...well, like a human being, I think partly it's because deep down Landsman isn't a complete jerk, he does have moments of compassion and civility. And the fact that Ziggy showed regret and compassion, owned up to what he did and basically made this whole process easy for him probably helped. I often describe Landsman as the most unlikable likable person or the most likable unlikable person. Also, to be honest, I think the fact he was dealing with just a white kid in Bal'more(as he pronounces it) instead of a project yo played a part in it as well.

Haye Zeus

He wore a suit so he can look like a businessman or atleast someone with money. Can’t just have some bum. C’mon George, stop pretending you don’t know brothel etiquette. ;P

Cory Garron

Brother Mouzone was one of the 2012 detectives in True Detective, Lester was the priest who told them about the "Devil Traps" and complained about cats being nailed to his churches door.

Aussiefeld

Predestination (2014) this is a movie with one of the most unexpected twists, it has got to be seen....

Justin Newberry

Y’all aren’t even done with season 2 and you’re already invested in this show. You’re about to find out how great this show actually is. The Wire was so influential that the directors of The Walking Dead cast several people from The Wire in The Walking Dead because they were such huge fans of The Wire.

redddfer44

I have a pretty good memory for faces and can pretty easily spot actors in different roles, but damn if Michael Potter didn't disappear into Mouzone completely. Maybe it's the glasses and the fact that it's his first role. But still, an amazing performance.

Starromania72

I swear Frank gets sadder in his mugshot each time they show it on the board.

Q

They should have just lied to valcheck, it didn't look good that Frank's picture was on the very bottom corner of board. Just put him on top and act like he's the main target. Also, the whole southest distrct owes Prez a beer for punching Valcheck.

Chris

Notice the western district commander, Colvin, making his first appearance in this episode . His right hand man lieutenant Melo, is the real life Jay Landsman. Also, the homicide detective at the scene with Rawls is Ed Norris. His actual real name, and he was the ex Baltimore police commissioner in real life

James Boyd

Fun Fact: George was right, 5-O as an etymology for police is derived from the show Hawaii 5-O. It was a reference to Hawaii being the 50th state.

REDR58

Another fun fact, in the original 1968 Hawaii Five-O series, the characters are part of the Hawaii State Police. In reality, Hawaii never has had a State Police.

Hexon66

Hey don't make fun of Dom. He's a Brit playing an American doing a posh English accent. And the atrocious English accent is still better than his Bal'mer effort.
