Bryce Lamkin

I hope this leads yall to watching the other movies and the Cobra Kai tv show. Based decades later, using the same cast

JoshG

The cobra Kai show is definitely the best iteration of anything karate kid. You gotta watch the movies first tho

IG21

I would say go straight to cobra Kai after this cobra Kai is the best thing from the franchise definitely recommend it

Roberto Abitua

Karate Kid II was my favorite as a kid (though now it's the original). III isn't great, but if you guys ever decide to check out Cobra Kai (You should!), you'll want the knowledge from it since references/characters from III come into play in the series.

Jeff K

Karate Kid II is mediocre and Karate Kid III is just bad, but there’s so much in the show that comes from those two movies I think it would be impossible to watch Cobra Kai without seeing them first.

PastaDon

Man, it makes me a little emotional revisiting this and seeing Pat Morita "Mr. Miyagi" again.. Everything that guy said you just ate it up as kid.. and even now as an adult..

Bruce Bromley

George, Karate Kid II, as well as Rocky Ii both begin minutes after the first ones end.each had a recap of the final fight. Both Rocky and Kid were directed by John G Avildsen. Would love to see them on an upcoming sequels poll.

BND

surprised you didn't recognize Daniel, he was in My Cousin Vinny, he was Vinny's cousin

Jeff K

And "You're the Best" was originally going to be used in Rocky III, but lost out to "Eye of the Tiger." Even more connections between the two franchises.

golfextreme

I always loved at the end, Daniel is yelling to Mr Miyagi “we did it!”, and not “I won!”, showing that Daniel had truly learned that it wasn’t about winning the tournament but winning respect. Absolutely watch 2 and 3. You can skip next karate kid and the remake is good, but it has no connection to this franchise. While 2 and 3 aren’t as good, you have to have them in to truly appreciate Cobra Kai, which I highly recommend.

Jeff K

Cobra Kai is a GREAT show. Highly recommend it. It’s absurd and has no right being as good as it is, but it’s super fun and really funny.

Kate Zimmerman

Elisabeth Shue, forever my childhood crush, thanks to this movie. (Okay, and Adventures in Babysitting, but that’s an aside.)

Jeff K

I had a crush on her in Karate Kid, and fell in love with her in Adventures in Babysitting. Don't fuck with the babysitter!

Jeff K

On that note with Miyagi -- it's still wild to me that a 1980s sports movie that was marketed pretty heavily toward kids/young adults was one of the first movies I ever saw that referenced or even acknowledged Japanese internment.

Jinyatta

When George asked "Does the kid still act?" I literally said out loud: "He wasn't even a kid then!" Ralph Macchio was 22 when this film came out.

Oscar Diggs

George's proverbs are the best.

Be Human

Karate Kid 2 definitely worth a watch, probably my favorite of the series. 3 is my least favorite but you need to see it for Cobra Kai.

Monica Alarcon

I'd say watch the second movie for the channel then the third one on your own then Cobra Kai for the channel. But that's just me. The remake is actually pretty solid too.

Duncan

not sure why everyone is having a go at "jesusmowsmylawn" from what i have seen and heard,he is a really good member of many patreon communities,i would compare him to just a very good human being and a all round nice person

Joshua White

Yep, 2 is good, 3 is fine, Swank is bad, and Cobra Kai is crazy fun.

Brian Harris

The first one is, in my mind, kind of a minor masterpiece as teen movies go. Pat Morita’s performance is incredible. 2 is fine. I’m an outlier here in thinking that 3 is better than 2. The first season of Cobra Kai is fucking great. It’s a complete subversion of the movies and (rightfully) sort of mocks the conception of “good guys” and “bad guys” in a movie about teenagers. Lots of compelling questions, like how much of who you were as a kid matters as an adult, and how reliable memory is, and how we inevitably remember ourselves as the hero of our own story, but other people may remember it differently. And it’s interesting, because it also relies on the audience’s memory of the movies and indicts their forced perspective of the characters in order to sell the narrative. As a meditation on storytelling, it’s very effective. It should only have lasted one season. Beyond that, it becomes soapy and sloppy and unwieldy (albeit wildly entertaining). You really miss the tranquility and focus that Miyagi forced on the movie and on the characters. It’s very unfortunate Morita died before he could be part of it.

8bitAndy

Agree 100%. Cobra Kai should have only gone for one season. The nostalgia and the fan service are great, but they're not enough to carry it through the melodrama and contrived storytelling they lean on to keep the show going for as long as they have. I'm truly shocked that so many people are rabid fans of this show.

Rob Church

Pat Morita was good friends with musician Don Ho and used to go to all of his shows in Hawaii and tell the EXACT same joke every night. Don would stop the show at some point and say "please everyone, we have a guest tonight, give a big hand for my friend and celebrity: Pat Morita!" and everyone would clap and he would wave at everyone, and then Don would say" Please Pat, stand up and say hello!" And then Pat would yell back "Hey, I am standing!". And they would do that bit over and over for years.

Gary Poussard

The second film is worth checking out its for sure.

Jacob Lantom

I was legitimately a fetus when this came out

Mr.Redmage

Would love to see you guys watch 2, 3, and kobra kai

James Falato

$8 Million Budget shows that a good Screenplay allows for a good Film...

Connor Alexander

2 is meh. 3 is slightly better than meh. None of the others are worth your time (sorry Simone!). BUT - Cobrai Kai is AMAZING and absolutely worth your time.

Nerd's Gold

2 is good, 3 is OK. Watch them both if you want to watch Cobra Kai (which you do). The others are optional.

Deepan Nathan

Cobra Kai is awesome. It starts from Johnny’s point of view but does have Daniel in it. Really funny and feels like a good fresh take on the film. I’d say you don’t need to watch karate kid 2 or 3 before the first two seasons but they start bringing stuff in from those movies later on. You should defo watch cobra Kai

romeo-a-go-goat

Great to see you guys react to this one. Hope you guys do Cobra Kai

Lachlan Caldwell

Simone: "... and then I remembered the Hillary Swank one" George: "And that movie was not magical(?)" Simone: "It was to me." LOL 😁😂

Obsolyeet

Cobra Kai is an amazing show because of heavy doses of KK2 and KK3 though.

Obsolyeet

Cobra Kai is a masterclass on how to properly revive a franchise. You guys COULD go straight to the show if you want to, but it samples heavily from all 3 shows in the trilogy. The more movies you cover the more you will enjoy the series.

Ginger

I love how older movies just end like it's saying: "The story is over! What do you want?" xD

Rezblade

Two and Three are pretty good the end

8bitAndy

I wish the beginning of Karate Kid Part II had been the end of this movie instead. It wraps up this movie so well.

David Nesbit

The beginning of KK 2 is a direct continuation from this ending

Eric S

2 is worth watching

Sensei Dave

this is still the go to standard for quotes, beliefs, and idea for self defense and martial arts. at least in my dojo. my 8th degree master (teaching for almost 35 years) brings up ideas and quotes from this movie now and then. and has actually said that, despite it being almost 40 years old, still has many ideals that are true, can work and can be referenced. definitely Karate Kid II. Karate Kid 3 if you're considering watching Cobra Kai (maaaaany references to all 3 movies).

Jenny MacRunnel

You guys really need to watch the 2nd one. I like it just as much, and it actually picks up right where the first left off and shows what happens with Cobra Kai and the teacher. I didn't like the 3rd one at all, its very brutal and just not very fun. I didn't mind the Hilary Swank one, but its definitely not as good. I haven't watched Cobra Kai yet, but I would if you guys do!

Lana Gorgeous

I saw this movie when it was new in the theatres and it was a great experience. The director for this movie was John G. Avildsen, the same person who directed the first Rock movie. Oh a couple points, during WWII "Americans" with Japanese heritage were forced into concentration camps in one of the worst atrocities in American history and that is why Mr, Miyagi's wife and child died, there were few doctors to assist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans; and while his wife was dying, he was fighting heroically for America in WWII and that medal he received that Daniel read that said valor in the blue ribbon well that was the highest award for heroism the country has, the Medal of Honor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor. This demonstrates a little more about the character of Mr. Miyagi!
