Viewers make sure to get the 1984 one!

I'm not saying you're the best... around. But yer none too shabby!

Bruce Bromley

Honestly, who remembers the 2010 version. People born after 2000? There is only one, and the sequels, II,III, and the Next. :-)

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that some Japanese, like from Honshu or Hokkaido, look down on Okinawans as not quite Japanese. Yeah I thought Cobra Kai was a great show, but you need to watch the movies to really appreciate the references and inside jokes. I was pleasantly surprised by the show, really caught the feeling from the original movies, nostalgic and contemporary at the same time, good stuff.

redddfer44

I tried rewatching this a while back but the bullying and early 80s cheese is just too much for me. I'm glad you liked it! Funny that you mentioned Rocky, since it's by the same director.

Young Blood Priest

Ralph Maccio was in a lot of things 8n the 80s. You guys last saw him in My Cousin Vinny. He was Vinny’s cousin. I could be wrong but I think he was in his mid 20s in this movie. Pat Morita was a stand up comedian. I first saw him when I was a kid. He played Arnold on Happy Days with Ron Howard and Henry Winkler. He also had a recurring role as Lamont’s friend Ah Chu on Sanford and Son.

BND

Part 2 is pretty good, but Part 3 is rubbish.

Jim Frykman

Napoleon Dynamite would be the most appropriate Sensei follow-up.

JediLounger

So Cobra Kai (2018) is legit, and you guys should watch it. It started on YouTube Red (a type of YouTube subscription) and moved to Netflix in the later seasons. However you should watch Karate Kid Part 2 (1986) and Part 3 (1989) at minimum. Part 2 is pretty good and Part 3 is rough, but watchable. The 2010 remake is not going to be part of the series, and as of right now The Next Karate Kid (1994) is not going to be part of the final season of Cobra Kai. That movie is pretty bad but Hillary Swank is good in the movie, and the movie is credited for starting her career, so it would not shock me if she shows up in some fashion for the final season.

Whaf03

Cobra Kai is so damn good, but you have to watch parts 2 and 3 first.

Theoshin

I agree in that watching 2/3 is needed to watch Cobra Kai cause of who they like to reference those movies. I will Say Cobra Kai is good, but I feel it has had to many seasons at this point.

Pam Nail

I love this movie a lot, and I always forget what genuinely good storytelling it is and how good the filmmaking is. The director is John Avildsen, who made Rocky. Pat Morita was nominated for an Oscar for this and the movie is credited with popularizing karate in the US. I like 2 and 3 a lot, for different reasons. Two is genuinely good; 3 is cheesy and over-the-top but I find it entertaining (and if you thought the Cobra Kai sensei was bad ... hoo boy!). Agree with the others that you need to see 2 and 3 if you'r going to watch the TV show.

mpd

Where can we get that Cinebitches shirt, do you guys have merch?

Odd Thomas

I am once again asking for Jeepers Creepers

Generators

its in the description of the YT version, and its in the middle of the video when Simone asks viewers to join patreon.

Monica Alarcon

Simone: "This movie is oooold" Gee thanks a lot. Lol. I realized I haven't seen this movie in literally decades... Yet it's all so familiar thanks to Cobra Kai...

Wilss

I'd say watch the 2nd one, it's pretty good and continues straight after the tournament. 3rd one isn't as good but probably still worth a watch to wrap it up.

ChickensAreRacist

Great movie and great reaction!! As many others are saying, I think from here you’d appreciate Cobra Kai right now/next. Avoid spoilers hard if you can.

David Crabtree

Great reaction to a great movie! Karate Kid 2 and 3 are must watches, especially if you're planning on checking out Cobra Kai, which is heavily informed by all 3 movies, particularly the third film as you get deeper into the show. Karate Kid 2 is great, Karate Kid 3 has its moments, but is a definite step down in storytelling. Karate Kid 3 is worth watching for the film's antagonist alone! But definitely watch all 3 movies if you're planning on diving into the fantastic Cobra Kai series, which restroactively makes the film series even better.

Michael Robayo

Watch Cobra Kai, please! Everyone comes back, and the story continues! And Parts 2 and 3 are worth watching!

The Maestro

the other movies are also good and you'd want to watch them if you plan on ever watching the show, you could watch season one of Cobra Kai with just this movie and the later seasons you'd want to watch 2 and 3

Chints' Miniature Mistakes

Cobra Kai is a lot of fun with plenty of fan service for those who've seen the movies. A lot of the cast come back for Cobra Kai including Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The whole premise of the show that it's 30 years after the events of the 3 movies. Also fun fact, Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) was the voice of the Emperor in the original Mulan!

Odd Thomas

You don't remember Elisabeth Shue from Back to the Future II and III? (clutches chest dramatically & faints). The Boys indeed.

King_Panarisi

From the little bit of Karate i got at school i think that the teacher said that Karate originated from Okinawa, that is propably why they used it as the teacher's birthplace. Edit: Now that I'm further in the reaction i see the movie kinda explained it aswel.

Odd Thomas

"Digital fly" lol. It was the 80s.

Walter White

really hoping you guys get around to This is the end soon considering it only lost by a few votes on the poll a few weeks back. fingers crossed lol

akaTheBARON

🖤So everything Karate Kid lore you can skip if you want to work up to watching Cobra Kai, whether to react to or just watch on your own time: -The Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan "Karate Kid" obviously since it's a remake (and not even about karate... it's about Kung Fu lolll). It's an OK movie I thought, but not connected whatsoever. - "The Next Karate Kid" with Hilary Swank, is definitely not referenced in Cobra Kai at all (unless they work something into the upcoming final season). Its technically not a part of the original 3 films but it takes place in the same universe with Pat Morita playing Mr. Miyagi. But it also wasn't very good either from what I remember. Nobody would blame you for skipping it. Karate Kid 2 & 3 are must watches though, Cobra Kai references them and continues on their stories all the time. Karate Kid 2 I think would be great for a Cinebinge reaction as its a pretty solid sequel. Karate Kid 3 was nothing special but worth a watch (with or without a reaction) just due to how much weight it holds in the series. But yeah... Cobra Kai is a very solid show.

Raven Dark

As everyone else has said, you need to watch Cobra Kai. If you do, you'd have to watch Karate Kid 2 and 3, or you will be lost. As of now, you do not need to watch the Hillary Swank one, or the remake. There is a one-liner reference in the show to Jackie Chan, and that's what it's referring to, but other than that, the remake has no baring on the show. Cobra Kai is five seasons (the sixth and final season is coming soon), and the episodes vary in length. Many are under 30 minutes. Some reactors do two episodes at a time, because they're so short, and I recommend this. Each season is only 10 episodes long, so you won't take long to go through them. To clear up a few things. Simone, Daniel was in the bathroom washing the egg out of his hair (the chicken thing in the previous scene). George, I always assumed Daniel had a celebration with his mother off stage, in between him leaving Mr. Myagi and seeing Alli at Golf 'N Stuff. They probably left it off stage because it wouldn't have pushed the story forward and would have slowed the pace. Yes, the chores Myagi had him doing were to teach blocking techniques, but they were also meant to create muscle memory and build Daniel's muscles up. I also think Simone is right. they are meant to teach discipline as well. Here's how I interpret why Allie was mad at him. After the scene at the restaurant, because Daniel saw her kissing Johnny, he left and stopped talking to her. She didn't realize he thought she wanted to kiss him, because he was too busy falling and being laughed at to notice that she lost her shit on Johnny for it. Then he left before he saw the right hook (offstage) the friend described. (George, you asked how he would know that if he left. I think the friend assumed he was still there until he looked surprised by it, which told her he must have left before it happened.) When Daniel would have stopped talking to her, Allie then would have thought he blamed her for the kiss. This is understandable, because in the 80s, a lot of boys would have. Daniel did blame her, but it's because he didn't see the whole thing. I'm talking about her thinking he blames her the way sexist jerks do, not because he missed something. The reactions make sense, but it's partly because of the time. You guys were also wondering how Allie knew the karate rules. She dated a guy heavily into karate, but it's not because she listened to something she had no interest in. We can assume Johnny has been to a lot of tournaments (they may have said he won one in the movie, but I'm not sure). All it would take is her going to one on a date with him once and she would know. And she may have asked about it, just to show interest in something he likes. For me, that scene where Myagi shows him how the movements during the chores are blocks is one of the most satisfying payoff scenes I've ever seen. I still get goosebumps every time I see it. So glad you guys loved this movie, and really hoping you'll watch Cobra Kai.

DM DC

I agree with akaTheBARON. The Karate Kid 2 is a pretty solid sequal. 3 was okay, but is still worth a watch especially if you're planning to start Cobra Kai. Also Ralph Macchio who stars as Daniel LaRusso in this movie is also in My Cousin Vinny as Billy Gambini.

Ghostwriter

I wonder if something like the Star Wars "machete order" might be good way to watch, i.e. The Karate Kid movie, then Cobra Kai season one, then Karate Kid II and III, then the rest of Cobra Kai? Each "chapter" links up well that way.

Robert C

My favourite martial art is the Scottish martial art of Fuk Yu, which consists of headbutting and kicking people when they are down. Anyone get this movie reference, and can name the Canadian actor that said it?

FranciscoGios

Definitely watch Karate Kid 2 & 3, I don’t watch or planning to watch the Cobra Kai, but you guy’s really need to watch those two movies because I know something about the show that include parts 2 & 3. And if you guys like to know my favorite tree are the black oak trees.

Monica Alarcon

If you plan to watch Cobra Kai you MUST watch The Karate Kid animated series to catch an obscure reference in season 3... (I'm joking of course)

sarCC

Karate Kid Part II is very good, I recommend it.

Alex Ch

The director is also the director of Rocky, so maybe the best sports filmmaker out there. But if you’re going to watch another sports film, the original Bad News Bears would be amazing.

Reiji Kobayashi

The short story is that they were a sovereign nation that we (Japan) conquered and that there was (and still is, to some extent) opposition to being made one of us. Which is why it feels slightly weird to me that Miyagi seems more Japanese than Okinawan.

Reiji Kobayashi

The 2010 reboot has absolutely nothing to do with this movie aside from the title, though I found it pretty fun to watch - especially the bits with Jackie Chan. I'd be quite interested in how George reacts to the Chinese setting.

Shawnyofthedead

As an 80’s kid this movie was my obsession. My weekends and after school time were taken up practising Crane kicks. Ended up with 2 black eyes from a friendly “Karate” reenactment. Definitely recommend the second movie as it follows on directly from the end of this one.

Martin Nicholls

Classic movie, well reacted - it's a little cringe in parts, particularly the jeans and some of the music, but it's still one of those movies everybody needs to see at least once. Very wholesome too. No montage though. George had me in stitches with "digital fly" in 1984: that's the whole movie budget gone :) Growing up in California near a beach in the 80's (and probably a bunch of the 90's) must have been something - always seemed like peak teenager to me, just before the world got stupid which has now transitioned into utterly ridiculous.

Thomas Yanez

"Digital fly". It took a team of very patient people and a big jar of flies to film that scene.

Alan Kobb

George asked about drunk driving laws in the 1970s. Drunk driving laws were first put on the books in the early 1900s. In the 1970s, organizations like MADD (Mothers against drunk driving) lobbied to lower the legal blood alcohol limit, and many states moved the limit down from .10% to .08%. I don't recall any protests. there might have been a few, but not too many. Even prohibition in the US was not widely protested. When it finally did end, it was as much due to the need for tax revenues to pay for World War I as it was due to the fact that it did very little except increase crime. There were few, if any protests against prohibition.

Tyler Mckenzie

Okinawa is on an island so far from the main island of Japan. My cousin lived there for 3 years on a military base.

Chase Schleich

My brother did as well. He was there for 3 years and he came home with a wife and a new baby lol.

Jesse Coombs

I would love it if y'all would react to Karate Kid II. It's my favorite of the series.

Jack Urmson

Part 2 is definitely worth watching even if you decide to not watch Cobra Kai. However, part 3 is almost essential if you decide to watch multiple seasons of Cobra Kai.

Jesse Coombs

Karate Kid 2 is a legit 80's movie on its own and has some genuinely touching moments.

Michael Short

You should watch Part 2, and then the Cobra Kai TV series. :)

Alyila

Pls do more! part 2 and 3 and cobra kai, just skip rest.

Diiirk706

Part two, 3, and Cobra Kai

Angela D. Mitchell

Wonderful reactions! A little bit of trivia: The movie was originally supposed to end with a rumble outside the contest afterward, with Cobra Kai ambushing Daniel and Miyagi (and Miyagi beats Kreese), but when editing the movie, Avildsen decided it was more powerful to end inside, on Miyagi's proud smile to Daniel (I definitely agree). The direction and cinematography are wonderful. The director, Avildsen, won the Best Director Oscar for "Rocky." Cinematographer James Crabe was an acclaimed DP who was Oscar-nominated for The Formula, and he also did beautiful work on The China Syndrome, this movie, and Karate Kid II. Pat Morita was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing Miyagi. Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen's screenplay has become a frequent "perfect screenplay" for writers to learn from. It's a fantastic screenplay, and the dialogue is so natural among all the characters. My favorite thing about this movie is that Daniel is such a kind person right from the beginning (he goes to get water for the dog within minutes of moving in), and that he and his Mom are genuinely working-class and you don't see that a lot in movies. I also love that Johnny congratulates Daniel in the end, despite Kreese (who is basically an abuser). Karate Kid II is a genuinely good movie, although I hate what it does to Ali as a character. But it has some really beautiful scenes. Don't bother with any of the Karate Kids after that though -- they're pretty much terrible. "Cobra Kai" is really fun, and Ralph Macchio (Daniel) and William Zabka (Johnny) are terrific in it. But it's also kind of constantly enraging -- you sort of have to turn off your brain to watch it, but I mean that in the best way. Zabka is honestly really funny and weirdly rootable, as are the teenaged characters (although they flip from "good" to "evil" constantly season by season). (Also, I know I'm adding lots of reactions/comments -- my family's going through a terminal illness, and your videos have really cheered me up.)

ProIndy

I hope you would watch the part 2 and part 3 at some point also. They are not as good, but it's a fine trilogy. The newer ones a lot worse, those you can skip. :D

brian burke

good points, so sorry to hear about your family problems, i lost my mother to covid and i was severely damaged by covid as well but cinebinge and other shows helped me too. i am gonna check out your site too. i do not know much about dragon age, but i am writer and artist, who wants to help your writing work if i can, and am working on some joint projects if you are interested.

brian burke

if anyone is interested josh gad did a show called reunited apart with various movie cast reunions, and one he did was with the karate kid whole cast reunion recently. they also did others as well, check it out

Jerry C

The 2009 remake with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith was pretty good. Even though it's still called Karate Kid, this one is about Kung Fu and it takes place in China. But pretty much the same story updated for the current times.

David Lonewolf Wright

I love how there are so many shots that linger through out the movie and then abruptly ends. Makes sense with that tidbit someone mentioned about how they were going to originally end it. Karate Kid 2 I would say is a must watch, 3 not so much... but I would gladly watch it again with you two. That crib joke got me good, even more so with Simone's reaction to it.

pinkdino99

Ralph Maccio became quite a big name in comic books. Another great early movie of his is Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders which introduced Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Kevin Dillon, Rob Lowe and Diane Lane to the world.

Anthony Jackson

PLEASE do the other movies! At least the 2nd! U guys loved this movie i know you'll love the 2nd

sagesaria

I assumed that mom having a surprise for him was a lie - she probably DID have something for him DGMW, but the timing of Miyagi asking about Alli and Daniel going "oh shit, I've got to go" is convenient enough that I think he was making an excuse to leave and go talk to her.

Ben Stevens

consider this my petition for a martial arts sequels poll. you guys should continue this series (opens up the potential for Cobra Kai as a series reaction too if you finish the movies), but Ip Man, John Wick and/or the Matrix should be the running as well! more Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, and Jet Li too pls. k thx byyyee

John E. Dunn

Can you pleeeeeeeaaaaaase finish The Karate Kid movies and do the Cobra Kai TV series. At least the movies please.

Marcus Hicks

I concur. 3 is not awful, but entirely skippable....but I feel like 1 & 2 are two parts of the same movie.
