thank you, I needed this.....................much love from a fan

One of my favorite little bts factoids is that the script just said something to the effect of (Achilles fights godlike), I think they interpreted that fairly well. Another bonus for me is Nigel Terry, he had a small role as a priest in this but he was King Arthur in John Boorman's "Excalibur" ( highly recommend).

you mention loving brian cox, try succession on hbo, 4th and final season coming this month, it is his tour de force

Jeff I.

They would love Succession! It's pretty much a perfect mix of comedy and drama.

dieselbeast

Woohoo! Thank you Brad Pitt was born to play this role!

redddfer44

Hmmm! My 20-something purist ass hated this in the theater but the Canadian black magic is so strong that Imma watch the extended cut and keep an open mind.

This movie and Alexander are forever married in my mind... Two historical epics that had all the means to be great films but failed to deliver... yet manange to be more entertaining than their reputations will allow. I'm looking forward to hearing G&S's take on this one.

It seems like they’ve wanted to react to this for a while, as they’ve had it on several polls and it’s always done poorly. The movie was panned by critics when released, but it’s always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Then again, I’m here for anything involving Greek and Roman mythology or history.

e4tless

Freaking Thank you!! Been wanting this forever since Gladiator 🙏

COREY Ervin Scott-Johnson

The Netflix Troy story is more like the original story, very dark and has the F'd up way the story actually ended.

Robert C

Unfortunately, after renting the film to watch along I soon realised that the version being reacted to is the directors cut. As this is unavailable in the UK, I tried to persevere in pausing my rented copy to keep in time. Alas, it was too much for me to contend with and I will have to leave this one unwatched. In the future would it be possible for you to include the version being watched, or the length of the film in the Patreon title? Looking forward to your future uploads

King_Panarisi

George always says how long their copy of the movie is right before pressing play. In my opinion this is the best way of comparing versions. I agree it would help to put the version in the title or description tho.

Robert C

Yes, I realised right after I pressed play on the reaction. Unfortunately, as there was only one version available to me on Amazon, I didn't know that there was going to be a problem until after I started watching. I will be more vigilant in the future.

You guys seemed to enjoy Peter O’Toole, and his scene with Brad Pitt. You guys should watch more movies with O’Toole, he was an excellent actor. In particular I would suggest Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Becket (1964) and The Lion in Winter (1968). This would also introduce you to one of the greatest directors to ever live, David Lean. His historical Hollywood epics are some of my favorite films. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Dr. Zhivago (1965). Lean also has an extensive catalog of British films that are all worth watching, but this post is getting long, so I will just say that you should look into all of them.

Ginger

unfortunately this is a very different vesion than the one I get from Netflix. Guess I'll have to stick to the Youtube edit

Ginger

"Do you know Achilles' story?" - "I know he beat up a river once." :D Also: They seriously made them cousins? That's hillarious. Sure you can show armies slaughtering each other but imply a romance beteween two men? No way! x_x

Sean Brown

I would love it if you watched the directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven.

Steve Hickman

I recommend True Romance (1993) Directed by the late Tony Scott screenplay by Quentin Tarantino with an all star cast including Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette , Gary Oldman , Dennis Hopper , Sam Jackson , Val Kilmer , Christopher Walken , James Gandolfini and a small cameo role by Brad Pitt

Brendan Rafferty

TROY is such a garbage film... what a shame when you consider the talent on both sides of the camera. It's like someone told the epic story of Homer's Iliad to a five year old child with ADD and then that five year old made a movie based on how he remembered the story

FranciscoGios

This is one is one of my favorites, I like History plus it definitely teaches you how Troy was actually conquered with the Trojan Horse. As far as the fighting style use here Achilles vs Hector is top notch!!

FranciscoGios

And Holly Molly George wasn’t kidding that he likes this movie he said the 3 hours long version I was like Simone 😲that’s a long movie!!

Lou Gallucci

I think the Patroclus/Achilles thing is less clear than you're making it. Homer described theirs as 'deep and meaningful relationship'. The lovers interpretation came later, but yea early 2000s avoidance of controversy is probably why they went with cousin. I also really liked Achilles' death in this one, where the arrow in the heel is the only one left after he pulls the rest out. It satisfies my preference for the gods being a latter explanation for events rather than the cause of them.

Odd Thomas

Not quite as bad as Gods of Egypt, but I've no desire to revisit it either.

GBmain

Patroclus was Achilles' cousin and also his closest friend and companion in Greek mythology... scholars argue over whether he was his lover or not... it's not explicit in the text

braaap

Brad Pitt hated his performance in this role and called it a disappointment

Logan Kerlee

Really enjoyed this movie! lol, first time I watched it. I always thought it was a bad one, like Simone. xD Very happy that this won and that I got the chance to check it out. It really didn't feel like it was 3 hours plus in length! I'm very happy that they chose to keep a good bit of the brutality in the movie, instead of removing it entirely or minimizing it. None of the movie felt like it shouldn't have been there. Really liked it! I also would've really liked to see The Odyssey but at the same time it would very likely feel too unrealistic and just be seen as a fantasy movie.

Logan Kerlee

I would LOVE if they got around to watching Lawrence of Arabia! I think that I saw it on a poll sometime ago but it lost. I voted for it though! :P Peter O'Toole was such a fantastic actor. Loads of respect for his body of work.

Jesus F Christ

If any of you decide to check out Stephen Fry's greek myths series (Mythos, Heroes, & Troy) I highly recommend going with the audiobook versions. Stephen Fry reads it and its like listening to a cheeky professor telling you a bedtime story.

Shibby

Yea that is a great movie, much better than the cinema release

MacGuffinStuff

Oh yeah, you guys were right about the general being in Game of Thrones, that's James Cosmo, a Scottish actor who you've also seen as Angus in Highlander and Hamish's father in Braveheart. It's easy to miss him in that because they aged him up a lot, he's only 8 years older than Brendan Gleeson in real life. *Oops, quick edit, don't know if you guys have seen Braveheart, it's not on the channel apparently.

Tim Nicolle

In the Illiad didn't Hector get chased around the walls of Troy three times before finding his courage? May have misremembered!

Alex Ch

To see Priam (Peter O’Toole) as not a frail old man, you should check out Lawrence of Arabia. I think it’s probably the best film performance. Ever.

Paul G

I feel like the theatrical cut of this movie is mediocre at best whereas the director’s cut brings it up to a pretty solid status. Most of the emotional side plots got cutout in the theatrical version along with the more brutal combat scenes. The director’s cut just feels like a more complete story; at about 45 minutes longer it really should!

braaap

The entire plot is a shitshow, the History Channel would probably give a more accurate overview, even with all the aliens.

Astraeos

I really dislike the Director's Cut for the massive music changes they did. Made the soundtrack much worse, removing some of the best tracks of the movie. Never really understood that move

Chris Moon

There’s an 8 episode mini series about Troy on Netflix that gets a lot more into the gods and portrays the story more accurately. It’s called Troy, fall of a city I think. Fair warning it is harder to watch than this movie, the ending is really messed up. Also the dialogue is kinda cheesy at times but overall it was pretty good and worth watching if you like the story.
