This movie is WILD lol. I saw this on opening day (Christmas), at the Alamo Drafthouse in my area. I lived in a very conservative and religious town at the time, there were people walking out, demanding their money back, it was so good. If you want more movies like this, I would check out Wall Street (1987) and for a leaner, more straight forward version of this story I would check out Boiler Room (2000). Edit: Also, another movie that is on an unrelated(but also kinda related haha), equally messed up and twisted subject is The Big Short (2015). Second Edit: That was a real goldfish, but it lived. Hill did not swallow it. As Jeff suggests, Margin Call (2011) is also an excellent movie about the financial crisis. And if you want to go even deeper you can watch Inside Job (2010). It is a stright up documentary about the crisis.

OH WOW i waited years! Lets go!

The reason Matthew McConaughey is so skinny is that he was also in Dallas Buyer's Club right around that same time. If you haven't seen that one I highly recommend it. Amazing performances from both McConaughey and Jared Leto. Also, the chest thumping scene was McConaughey just fucking around between takes and they decided to keep it in.

Jeff I.

I'd also suggest Margin Call for a more dramatic/serious Wall Street based movie about one firm at the very beginning of the 2008 financial crisis. It has such a stacked cast and is well written.

The risk of birth defects or other complications is about that of a middle-aged woman giving birth, i.e. no, it really isn't an issue and as George pointed out, there is a reason why this shouldn't be the case. It just became taboo at some point is all, but the stigma doesn't have a very good biological foundation. "Now there's a man who knows how to marry his cousin"

tristan renaut

The swiss banker is a really famous french actor named Jean Dujardin, he actually won the oscar for best actor a few years back for The Artist.

Spacedone

He also had a part in the ensemble cast of The Monuments Men which is a fun movie that I think George and Simone would enjoy (if they've not already seen it).

Garrett Mazzuca

Gotta recommend "The Big Short" for another Wall Street inspired movie. Great cast.

Florian Geyer

Awsome movie, and now we watch The Big Short?

Mati D.

Just for reference, the guy that presented Di Caprio at the end is the REAL Jordan Belfort.

Martin

Lemons 714. Lol.

Paul G

I highly recommend you check out The Departed as your next Scorsese/Leo pick.

Odd Thomas

It's ok. Personally I think Shutter Island and The Aviator were better Scorsese flicks.

Martin

Second for The Departed. One of Scorsese’s best.

Logan Kerlee

Awesome movie, really enjoyed watching along with you both. :)

Scott Mazzei

The chest pounding thing with Matthew McConaughey was supposedly not scripted. Apparently it's something he does to get in character before a scene. When Leonardo looks over to the side he was looking at Martin Scorsese to see what to do.

Brendan Rafferty

The real Jordan Belfort has a cameo in this film. In the final scene where leonardo DiCaprio is giving a motivational speech to a crowd in Australia, the man who introduces him to the stage, "please welcome my good friend Jordan belfort"... that was the real Jordan belfort

W T

Big Short is easily my favorite Adam McKay movie - or WS-related flick for that matter. Definitely would get my vote ten times over.

Jay

I don't think this is anywhere near Scorsese's best, but the man's got high standards so I still like it. To make a near 3 hour film and not have it drag or be boring for one second is an achievement in itself. Belfort is such a scumbag. More Scorsese? I'll recommend Taxi Driver from 1976 with a young De Niro, great movie.

Paul Tassin

That was fun! I’d also like to echo all the comments for The Departed.

Mitchell Bowker

You have seen GOODFELLAS, you have seen THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, now you will have to watch CASINO, which is another Scorsese film in the vein of the other 2 films.

Opti_Frog

I keep forgetting how fucking good this film is.

Haye Zeus

Even tho I like this movie, I have always found it way too long. It’s excessive on its excess. It’s too many Leo screaming speeches. Too many scenes of debauchery and drug fueled mayhem. Too many Jonah Hill improvisations. Like as much as I enjoy them, it is exhausting. You get to a point where even a degenerate like me go I need to take a break. I got the point already. And maybe that’s the intent but I lost interest with it at the third act. Which is why it’ll never be in my top Scorsese flicks. Still great directing. Great performances. Just wish it was shorter. But yeah I would recommend for more Scorsese, cause the man just has masterpieces: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy(my personal fave), and Casino. You can’t really go wrong with the man

sarCC

Good ole Leo DioPrio.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

This is one of those movies that is great on multiple levels. If you watch it for simple entertainment value it's super fun (when it was shown to actual Wall Street traders they cheered for Jordan and Donnie), but if you watch it with any innate sense of empathy, but also a slightly dark sense of humor, it's a genius take on, well not just the American culture, but universal culture of greed and excess. I'd say it's a parody but it's probably too realistic lol because he got away with it all! Club Fed for a few years, roomie with Tommy Chong, writes a book on his advice, and then Martin Scorseez makes a movie about him. This movie is meta AF and I love it, thus not in quite the same way as all those idiots I grew up with trying to be Scarface and not getting the point of that movie. Also, a funny thing about qualudes, I probably wouldn't exist without them 😂

akaTheBARON

🖤IDK if this was already pointed out but the real Jordan Belfort made a cameo in this movie. He was the man at the conference that brought Leo out on stage at the end where Leo starts asking people to sell him the pen. So he literally introduces himself... lollll If you want another good Scorsese film to watch (there are quite a few) would be The Departed if you crazy kids haven't seen that yet. Leo is also great in that. The whole cast is great tho :)

Philipp Roensch

Totally get the exhaustion feeling from this one, it was an extreme ride at the cinema^^. The story is so full and wild, of couse has to be dramatized, but the man really flipped his yacht :D. On the question was led to the conviction I say would also be Jordan's drug problem, he did not run a controlled ship at any point. Would have liked to see Leonardo to get the Oscar at this point, should have been much earlier as well, but that only happened with The Revenant. Another Scorcesse+Leo collaboration: Shutter Island.

Vegard

Another Scorsese movie you should definitely check out is The Departed, also with DiCaprio, as well as Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg ++

Blackavar

Count another vote here for The Departed. Another great Scorsese/DiCaprio flick, one of my personal favorites

Brian Harris

For me, this is the movie that convinced me Leo was a great actor. The scene where he overdosed on the Lemmons is one of the best examples of physical comedy in the last fifty years. And who knew Leo could even do that? That’s Steve Martin/Jim Carrey level body plasticity. Everyone’s saying watch The Departed, and sure, I guess. Everyone seems to like that movie more than me, but it’s worth a watch. And eventually you’ll probably also get around to Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, both incredible films. But if you want to watch something a little unusual from Scorsese, something not everyone is going to necessarily jump on you to watch, check out Bringing Out the Dead. It’s about an EMT working overnights in New York, and it matches this one for frame to frame intensity and sheer “What the fuck did I just see?”

William Abbott

Blood diamond is my favorite leonardo dicaprio film

Jenny Tolls

I loved how long it was! First time I watched I couldn’t get enough of it so the length of time was perfect for me!

Jenny Tolls

I fucking wish I had Jordan's life ngl lmao I would've loved to be a part of Stratton Oakmont! This movie inspired me to do a lot of drugs when I was younger lol I'm okay now tho.

punterjoe

I avoided this film for so long because I found the subject matter repugnant, but your reaction swayed me. Thanks! This may be Scorsese's darkest, most cynical comedy yet! Move over 'After Hours' 😁

Daniel Popp

And most of the people sitting behind the front row attendees were stock brokers at Stratton Oakmont.

Kyle Style

please watch The Big Short!

JoeySnowyNoey

This is as just as a mob movie just as Martin's other mob films.

GBmain

Well George kind of fell for the cult of personality in the end lol...

Jim Johnson

A new Scorsese movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, is coming later this year and looks like a banger (also starring Leo), so now would be a good time to knock out more of his movies. You will not be disappointed. IIRC you guys liked Joker, so you should watch Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, both of which directly inspired that movie.

Lloyd S.

The real Jordan Belfort was the guy who introduced Leo onto the stage at the very end of the movie.

Brad Lowry

I love that you loved Rob Reiner... because he is essentially playing his father Carl Reiner playing Alan Brady on The Dick Van Dyke Show. BTW, Carl Reiner was the creator and main writer for The Dick Van Dyke Show. Carl Reiner also played Saul Bloom in Ocean's Eleven. Further, The Dick Van Dyke Show reruns are available on Tubi and other streaming sources, and definitely worth watching. (Seeing Rob Reiner in All in the Family is also a must watch for Television History, available on FreeVee)

Yep, if you go back 50-60,000 years, everybody alive today is about 10th cousins. As to the risk of inbreeding, it's not a 1/0 thing, what you have to look at is the amount of shared DNA, which is where you get a higher risk of shall we say undesirable genetic mutations, higher risk of miscarriage, higher risk of birth defects and hereditary disease, higher risk of amplifying bad genes. (Look at portraits of the Hapsburg family and you can watch their mouth cave in over the generations, more and more deformed until they stopped having kids that lived.) For siblings with the same parents that's generally 100% shared genes so that's very likely to go wrong; first cousins, 50%, then 25% and so on. Donnie's just rolling the dice every day. You know what I find funny? Jordan, with his all-day-every-day-every-drug-money-can-buy diet, is still smart enough to not do heroin. Don't do heroin, kids. When you say "Three years?" I say to myself, "I'm happy that my country's legal system doesn't have plea bargaining." Think about it. If you do the sort of calculated crimes involving co-conspirators that in the US could get you a plea bargain for snitching on the other guys, and you know that's not a thing that you can do, you're not going to take it as far, are you? It's bound to keep crime down. And it's bound to keep maniacs like Jordan off the street for much longer when they get caught.
