Yesss will watch this later! You should watch collateral from 2004!! Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise, it's incredible!

Hyperdryve

Lawl, I got an anti bullying ad immediately after that old woman stopped holding that needle up to his neck

Onikaze

would love to see what your reaction to the '84 David Lynch version of Dune would be. Have you guys done many(any?) Lynch movie reactions? will have to check.

redddfer44

Am I the only weirdo who doesn't like Villeneuve's style? I hated this movie in the theaters for how loud it was, but I gave it another shot at home so that I could adjust the volume, and it was better. But something about it is so offputting that I just cba to watch a reaction of it. The drab color scheme, maybe? Or how the characters barely have any facial expressions.

Astraeos

Don't think they've seen anything Lynch. I mean, yeah. My dream is that some reactor will some day react to Twin Peaks. Thats my dream. Such an amazing, weird, crazy little show.

dieselbeast

For me it wasn't the most boring movie in the world but it was very dry both literally and figuratively lol off putting 🤷 maybe because it's based off a book idk lol

JBK405

If you want that kind of Fourth-Wall-Breaking "I can't do this, they're the main character!" you need to see "Last Action Hero". It's an early-90s action/comedy/parody starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and it goes DEEP into the meta. Schwarzenegger was at the peak of his Action Hero fame and they took full advantage of getting him.

Dustin Fitzpatrick

i know you guys dont usually do them but you should do a reaction to the trailer maybe just for patreon or something

Jeff K

That movie is as so far ahead of its time. Hence why it failed. If you made that movie? I wonder how much better it would have done.

David Gallagher

I find this an interesting adaptation. Most of the book is there, but not really explained. Like the Mentats, books give background on why there is no computers and that mentats are humans trained in logic ect. The movie just has them roll there eyes and do numbers and I get it because I know the books. I am glad to see it still works for people who have not read the books.

JoeNotCharles

It's funny that you pointed out where all Villeneuve's SF shows up in this, when the main thing I was thinking is how much the arriving on Arrakis sequence reminded me of the drive through Juarez in Sicario.

Blacky

It's a good adaptation. Of course some deeper things are left out, like mentats, like how surprising the betrayal was because of the conditionement, like the "diner party". But none broke the story or the movie, all were dispensable. And for a movie of this size, huge chunks have to stay on the cutting room floor. There is only two things that I found unclear and could have benefited from just a couple of sentence more. The first one is the Missionara Protectiva. It's how deeply smart and cautious and manipulative the Bene Gesserit is, and why Jessica and Paul were "prophetized". Now, if the second movie follow the book, the next logical scene is the perfect opportunity to show it. I won't spoil anything of course, but to get the story as a whole, and its central most important theme, it's critical that the audience fully understand that point: Muad'Dib is NOT a chosen one. Paul may be "the one" for the Bene Gesserit, albeit a manufactured and yet still accidental one, but Muad'Dib or more precisely the Lisan Al Gaib is not. It's social engineering and cultural manipulation for power and protection. The second one is what Paul's vision in the tent was. He said a line or two about it, but I don't think that's enough or make it clear. Now it's not critical to these two movies so I understand why it may fall by the wayside, but it's critical to the next books (if they ever get adapted) so I hope there is some intimate calmer moment in the second movie (plenty of opportunities here, I won't spoil) to add a couple of clearer lines about it. Maybe even clearer than in the books. The rest is good. I could nitpick some things, like the Arakeen architecture, or the fact the movie doesn't show how brutally feudal the galaxy is (to be fair the book also does a bad job of this, but it may have been by design), or why the Emperor freaks out and make such a large gamble (the "is a jealous jealous man" is far, very far from the full story), the fact that the Sardaukars are not disguised. But that's mostly minor(ish) points. And of course the direction, most set design, the casting, the audio design and the score are out of this world good.

JoeNotCharles

Also, every Dune fan has their own ideas on which of the original books to stop at, because they get steadily - weirder, let's say - as they go along. Personally I pick #4 (God Emperor of Dune) as the last good one. Never tried to read the ones written by his son, because I've heard such bad things about them.

Peter Dillard

They've just released trailers for part 2!

Blacky

All Frank Herbert's one are worth it. He died before finishing the whole saga so the last one doesn't end that cleanly, still very much worth it. The last 2 are quite different, but more of "that protagonist" (avoiding spoilers here) is worth it, and the long debates with "the hostage/prisoner" are very good, especially given how these people were perceived before. #4 is hard to read sometimes, but quite good if you can get into it. The mix of almost infinite wisdom and infinite hubris all in one, and the relationships with "normal people" so broken and ultimately impossible, are very nice. But the books are not a huge commitment, because (apart maybe from #5) they all stand on their own, a reader could stop after any of them and have a satisfying story and arc.

ShroomDad

George wants a compilation of all of Simone's out of context soundbites, *I* want a supercut of every time Simone has said "Jeepers".

HeyHeyJK

A masterclass in filmmaking on all levels. Seeing this in IMAX (which I'm so sad you both missed) for the first time was the closest experience I can remember of seeing "Star Wars" when it first came out. I would actually suggest you skip a reaction to Part Two for the channel and see the sequel in IMAX, or at least see Part One again on the biggest screen possible, which I hope they will rerelease before the sequel comes out. So, Denis Villeneuve has a perfect trifecta at this point: "Arrival", "Blade Runner 2049", and this film. All indications are that "Dune: Part Two" is going to be even better than Part One, which should fully land him as the greatest sci-fi director of all-time. PLUS, he's working on a Dune TV series, I think, based on ... I forget. One of the other Dune books. He has loved the books since he read them as a teenager and it shows in every frame of this film.

overdev

visually stunning with really great VFX, but I couldnt get into it at all, didn't care much for the story and characters. maybe cause it's also this unfriendly society with houses like in GoT which I also don't like

Jon

I agree that the movie looks great, but I really don't think they adapted the source material very well. In my opinion, while the miniseries has it's flaws I really think best adaptation I've seen so far.

Steve

I was watching the 80s one round someone's house, and it took me longer than I'd like to admit to realise it wasn't the new one. Blame the wine.

david moreland

Your comments on Villeneuve and scale really makes me want him to make Hyperion if it ever actually gets made.

Leon Agnew

One of the most overrated movies

Andrew

Oh, and I thought I was going to bed.

My favorite novel quote of all time comes from this book: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Jacob Lantom

Timothee chalamet with the "voice" has what is called the power of persuasion

Teyon Alexander

I enjoyed the director’s work far more here than in Blade Runner . In Blade Runner, he over used establishing shots to the point it felt like 80% of the film (here’s a shot of a junkyard. Here’s another shot of that same junkyard. Here’s that junkyard at a different angle, here’s that junkyard but look we’re half an inch closer). In Dune he managed to achieve a sense of scale without doing that .

Josh A

I LOVE Dunc!

Magnificent Gojira

I fear that more flawless films of Vileneuve are the more lifeless they become. This one looks like gothic party/fashion show in the house of Ctulhu where good and bad are wearing black. Dune has crossed the line for me between good movie and marketing research, unfortunately. It's almost funny how serious it is

redddfer44

Hm. I've been wondering what it is about Villeneuve that I don't like and maybe it's this. Perfection at the price of lifelessness. But it still leaves me wondering why I love Kubrick :D I can't deny that Villeneuve did a great job transferring the novel's main events into a movie, but not once do I feel like I'm on Arrakis or that any of these people are actual characters inhabiting that world. Instead, they're a part of a bleak tapestry of sharp images. Maybe that's how Villeneuve interprets the book, I dunno.

Magnificent Gojira

That's a good comparision. Both are very meticulous, but Kubrick (except maybe for Space Odyssey) never did big-budgety thing where you have to lean on a teamwork. He usually worked with a small crews and was very controlling of his personal vision, afair. Last two film by Vilineuve are all about teamwork and he's being filter to all propositions. Of course they are not in any way like some overproduced tentpolls, but they are felt like they're perfect AI paintings - all in due place, it's exquisite in many ways, but it doesn't look like some work by human artist.

Blacky

That would be a feat. A true adaptation would be insanely difficult, maybe even more than Dune. Less visual storytelling, and way more deep dialogues.

Oscar Diggs

This was a great reaction. George's understanding of the book combined with Simone's unfamiliarity really made me so happy. Rebecca Ferguson's performance is underrated. She had to do some very heavy lifting to fill in the missing inner monologue. Her version of the character is a big difference from the book because she's more demonstrative, but she provides the majority of the emotion about the tragedy occurring on screen.

Thomas Yanez

As George pointed out, the use of inner monologue is a really big thing in the book and compensating for that was one of the places where the 1984 movie really failed, IMO. By "failed" I mean just blatantly had the people give voice over narration of said inner monologue, and it always feels cringe to me.

Joanthan Skidmore

The Worlds Fastest Indian doesn't look any where near as good as this film, but I still feel it has more heart!

Josh A

And then that triggers me remembering the Al Pacino "Dunkaccino" video. "Say hello to my chocolate blend!"

redddfer44

I've thought of it as discussion. There are many ways to disagree and I like hearing different opinions if they're not hostile.

Blacky

Agreed, I find her a very good casting, and her performance top notch.

Tales From The Underside .com

Lynch’s 84 version should be done. A lot of great costumes and visuals in that too. And it was able to do the first book all in one movie. Yeah there are issues, but don’t miss it. Also Jordowskys Dune the documentary is worth checking out at least for George as a fan of the books. And the miniseries was good too, great actors in every adaptation.

Tales From The Underside .com

David lynch then I think of Cronenberg and now I want to see a reaction to Existenz which probably doesn’t exist anywhere.

REDR58

They should definitely do it, but perhaps after they see Part 2 of Denis Villeneuve's version.

PIG

I wonder how they would handle a Lynch film, especially the recent stuff.

Jobbe Smit

What makes Dune have such a good Chosen One is that it isn't chance, or magic or birthright. He's the product of thousands of years of planning. Despite the magic it makes him more real then the greatgreatgreatgreatgrandson of a dragon or a guy chosen by some god to be his avatar. In a way it was earned. And of course how the entire body of work deals with a chosen one is just chef's kiss.
