Dune Part One - Patreon Version

Jay Davis

This spice too shall flow ... into my eyes! Wasn't expecting this nice surprise. But I'm left wondering. Have either of you seen Dune (1984)?

Garin

Let's go!!!! Dropping everything to watch this with you guys...

JonnyBoomstick

Always a treat im pouring my coffee now to enjoy with you

djKENTO

Yes his name is actually pronounced William Day-foe. There’s videos of him saying it on stage as a college student

JediLounger

What I have taken to for reading is I listen to the audio book while reading the book. I find it makes it feel like watching a play. Also, you guys should watch the new D&D movie, it is a riot.

redddfer44

It'd be so much fun if Simone's dad actually knew Willem Dafoe. Here's hoping for a surprise cameo on a Cinebinge video one of these days :D. He's such a sweetheart. My heart would stop beating just out of sheer happiness. I think one of your strengths is you guys being just you and saying what comes into mind. Yay Simone for standing up for George.

Astraeos

Dune 1984 version please. It's honestly a great film, and it's super interesting to watch it after seeing the new Dune. Plus it's gotta shirtless Sting, and an amazing soundtrack largely composed by Toto. It's a crazy, crazy movie. Not to mention it's David freaking Lynch as director. As to this movie, there's honestly not much to say yet. We need Part II. It's a great Part I, but it's very much incomplete. And honestly talking about the story in any sort of detail will just lead to spoilers, so yeah. Hopefully you guys can avoid that. Dune is a great story, and I have full faith Villenvue will complete it with an amazing conclusion that is accurate to the book.

Haye Zeus

I only saw this halfway when it was first out, so hopefully i’ll be able to finish it with you guys.

droodly

I remember watching this on the day it was released, and being totally engrossed. THEN it ends all cliff-hangery with "this is just the beginning". Totally blue-balling me. I rushed to google to check the release date of part two, and it hadn't even been green-lit yet. The ending felt much better this time knowing the story will definitely be continued.

JediLounger

Based on how Simone feels about the worms, you guys should watch Tremors (1990). First movie is legit, rest of them would be great for the Cinecringe series.

Foodassassin4life

I liked George's commentary on Troy. All the lore and myth he gave and talking about inaccuracies and blatant changes to make some of the characters and story more sympathetic and Hollywood friendly

Raven Dark

OMG, I'm so happy! *Sees workload* FML. Someone needs to talk to you two about your timing. LOL I have to adult for days yet before I have time to watch this. But man, I can't wait to dive in.

Odd Thomas

I think this must have literally blown my mind at the cinema because I didn't remember anything and seeing it again I was just as amazed as Simone. So good.

Tenn Seven

Strong "Apocalypse Now" vibes when the Baron wipes that water off his head.

pedantech

Now watch Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice music video. The lyrics are about Dune, and the actor in the music video will be in Dune part two. It's also just unexpected and amazing.

Funny That

Really glad the steamer you watched from saved so much money only sending 25fps for you to watch, but trying to watch along with 30fps made for a shit experience. A mis-match ain't everything, but having to constantly pause the film every minute for movie that is enjoyable only if you can sit back and sink it to it falls apart as a watch along experience. Happy to hear any suggestions as to how to align the playback speeds, and I know we're just being served however the restaurants wants to, but it sucks.

john blake

Leave George alone. He’s perfect!

sarCC

Are you watching movies on fast speed? Unless they were shot differently, like the first HOBBIT or James Cameron now, all movies are shot 24 fps.

Henkan

Denis Villeneuve, together with Alex Garland, are my two favorite sci-fi directors working today. They've really managed to breathe life into a film genre that almost died to Hollywood schlock! That being said - if you like the imagery and soundtrack to Villeneuves movies, please give Garland a shot as well - Ex Machina, Annihilation and DEVS are all fantastic works.

REDR58

Seconded. Frankly they should just watch the entirety of Twin Peaks just because it's so wonderfully nut and amazing.

Naturekitty5309

7 minutes in and I have to say: George if I didn't want to know what your thinking, why would I purchase your patreon. Say what you feel man, haters gonna hate. We love ya

Michael Robayo

Never read the books and only watched some scenes from the 1984 version, and this version knocked me out. And I saw all the influence it has on modern Sci-Fi. Like Star Wars and The Matrix, etc.

Vlasios Vougiouklis

Do they delete comments? Who are those people bullying george?

Ginger

I haven't read the books but I've seen the David Lynch movie with Patrick Stewart and Sting. It's definitely... interesting. But it will REALLY make you hate the baron. :D So disgusting

Tomas

"There's a total of 15 books" - technically yes, along with a bunch of short stories, but honestly, unless you're really wanna nerd yourself down into it, reading the 6 books written by Frank Herbert (and perhaps the 2 books written by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson from notes left behind that concludes the plot arcs left unfinished after Franks death) is enough. The other books are really more or less their own thing in the same universe, exploring worldbuilding things that are brought up but not detailed in the 6 (+2) "main" books. Also, this movie was an amazing theater experience. Do recommend people to watch the second one in theater when it is released! The adaptation is spot on imo in this first one, it follows really closely, so have high hopes for the next one.

Brendan Rafferty

Interesting about the year…. 10,191…. This is not just over 8,000 years in the future. It’s actually more that 12,000 years in our future. The year 10,191 according to the new calendar humanity begins after the Butlerian Jihad…. When mankind created a new religion and rose up against the artificially intelligent machines that enslaved mankind for centuries. The new religion is also why there are no computers …it is a sin, according to the new religion, to create a machine to replace a man. Humanity began sharpening mental skills… why there are characters like Thufir Hawat (a mentant) who can do complicated calculations quickly in his head.

Brendan Rafferty

What the book makes clear and the movie does not is why spice is so important. Spacing guild navigators use spice to fold spa e so their large ships can instantly be in two points of the universe at once, making interplanetary travel instantaneous. Without spice, there would be no interplanetary travel as it would take thousands of years to travel to another planet. Without spice, the empire would collapse as travel, trade, and communication between worlds would instantly end

Jesus F Christ

I was just thinking about this yesterday, wondering why you'd never reacted to it, and thought, "George and Simone are both proper nerds, I guess they've already read all the books and saw this at the theater, that's why they haven't reacted to it on their channel." Then I get this wonderful surprise. I've read all the books (and watched the other adaptations) and this is the best adaptation we could have hoped for. It captures the grandeur, the visuals, the heart, and even the minutiae of the first book. Dennis Villeneuve nailed it, and I'm excited for Part Two coming out this November. If Simone reads Dune, the first book, I'd love to see another reaction to Part One. I enjoy watching a reaction when it's someone going into a movie for the first time, and I know it might seem superfluous, but I think it would be another great reaction when she can pick up on all the stuff she missed, and you can both talk about it without worrying so much about catching every line of dialogue. Just a thought. After you both watch Part Two, it would be interesting to see you watch Dune (1984) by David Lynch. Maybe even check out the 1999 Sci-Fi channel Dune miniseries they did. And I can't recommend highly enough Jodorowsky's Dune, a 2013 documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempt to try to adapt Dune in the mid-1970s (with Salvador Dalí as the Emperor no less), and how the work he did on it went on to influence Blade Runner and Alien. It's a crazy good doc.

gobmob2000

The dragon fly planes, the answer is yes and no. Insect can fly the way that they do because they are small. Scale sort of changes the physics of things, if you had a dragon fly the size of a human it would not be able to fly. Having said that though, with brute force you can make anything fly (i.e. rockets), so assuming that they have enough energy (considering their scifi tech, a safe assumption), they could just brute force it and make the wings flap with such speed and power that it would fly (assuming that hey had materials capable of handling that much force), but it would work really badly and not be efficient at all, but maybe energy is such a small problem for them that they just don't care. With scifi basically the answer is that if you have a good enough power source, almost anything is possible. If we had a good enough energy source right now, we could be traveling to other planets right now, even other solar systems. Have hovering structures like in Dune, have scifi weapons etc. And contrary to popular believe, its not even "that hard", the physics involved is well understood. The problem is we just don't have enough energy to do so. The best we can do right now is chemical rockets and there just is not enough of energy density in any chemical to make interstellar travel possible, even interplanetary is really hard. Nuclear is a possible option but underdeveloped for political reasons, although attitudes on that seem to be changing and nuclear rockets are back in fashion.

Joanthan Skidmore

Probably on my own here, but I prefer the David Lynch version, felt more grand, the music and the art deco design was gorgeous.. plus it had Patrick Stewart as Gurney :) oh and Sting was in it too! THE WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN was pretty good also!

wroot

I did a few audio books in the past. And while it was interesting experiment, i am with Simone, i am distracted too easily and then i miss things and rewinding is not the same as rereading a few lines above. As about Dune. I have also read only 3 books. And maybe it will be unpopular, but i think it should have only been one. It is great. And after that it becomes unnecessary convoluted and in 3d book just ridiculous. It actually took away for me from the first book. This movie is visually and audibly stunning for sure, like other movies from this director. When i first watched i had some gripes here and there. But movie is still good. Second part coming out this year. Will see how they finish this story.

JayF

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, ooh Everybody's going to the party Have a real good time Dancin' in the desert Blowin' up the sunshine

FranciscoGios

I wanted to know more about this version of DUNE, since I found out that Star Wars got some content from this stories and Stellan Skarsgard was in it; so I’ve been following more about it since then not the 1984 version, but I’m down to watch if you guys watch it. Plus I found out later that Christopher Walken is in Part 2 as the Emperor.

Superpotroast

The movie does say this "Without Spice interstellar travel is impossible, making Spice by far the most valuable substance in the universe." Admittedly it doesn't state how that Spice is used in traveling between the stars, but I think most nowadays, even casuals, are exposed to science fiction of one brand or another and could surmise enough to understand that, yes, Spice is very important..

Mike Adams

Great explanation, but it's 10,000 AG (after guild). The new year counting starts after the spacing guild was established. Not to be too technical, but I just learned that not too long ago so it's fresh in my mind lol.

Mike Adams

Director has plans to make 3 movies covering the first 2 books. Wish he'd do more, though. Would love to see his visual representation of (basically) Jabba the Hutt :)

Mike Adams

Exactly! Especially with a movie like this, having someone clarify a few things here and there I think is beneficial. Plus I find all the commentary with movies that involve Chinese culture fascinating.

Patrick Egan

I'm not sure how solid those plans for Dune Messiah actually are. And it's a weird place to stop, but if he wanted to do Children Of Dune he'd probably have to break that one up into two movies as well.

Cincassette

One film that this reminded me a lot of, in terms of showing the scale and beauty of space, but also it's cold realism, is Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey". Though It's obviously 50 years older than "Dune", it really holds up cinematically! I'd highly recommend you watch It if you haven't yet!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

First time watching the whole thing for me, fargin awesome! The only thing I knew about Dune was the David Lynch adaptation but I saw it when I was pretty young, had absolutely no idea there were so many books but I'm definitely intrigued and considering reading them. One thing I'm kind of fascinated by now, and I think you guys touched on it, and it's something Natalie Gold pointed out in something sci-fi she was watching, I forget what exactly, but it was how often sci-fi films are based on the messianic trope. From Star Wars (which I've heard is largely inspired by the Frank Herbert books) to The Matrix and many more, and it makes me wonder if it's sort of an example of psychological transference at a collective cultural level. For instance I'm a fairly big fan of sci-fi films (I definitely haven't read enough books though yet, I admit), and like a lot of my friends who are also sci -fi buffs, I'm agnostic (I used to say I was an atheist but I honestly believe I once lived in a haunted house, long story lol, point is it made me question things I had thought were certainties). I just think it's something interesting to consider, whether it serves some deep seated purpose, that may or may not stem from ideas absorbed from culture, or something even deeper psychologically. And then there's other parallels I can think of but anyway, just food for thought I guess, sorry for the rambling, I'm just still tripping out after this movie. Man I can't wait for the second part, and yes, also loving all of Denis Villeneuve's work I've seen.

Marty McGee

If they ever re-release this in theaters, you should definitely check it out. Especially on an IMAX or other giant screen with a top notch sound system. This movie was an amazing experience in the theater. The scene in the tent where Paul screams with the Voice had me literally shaking the first time I saw it. It still affects me after seeing it half a dozen times now. So glad you guys finally got around to it. Such a great adaptation. I think it was pretty well received. The only main complaint I heard was the omission of the dinner party scene from the book. I'll say no more since Simone is planning to read it. Other than that, it's as good an adaptation of a book as I've seen while still being a hell of a great movie in its own right. The 1984 David Lynch version has become sort of a cult classic. As a film it's pretty good. It's definitely done in Lynch's weird style and also starring some really good actors from that time. As an adaptation though it's not so good. It's a bit farcical watching it now after seeing Denis's version.

Green Nolan

Saw it first weekend in IMAX Absolutely stunning! I don't think it would be a spoiler if George explained "mentats" to Simone Especially since you see 2... In the film Would explain a lot of the world building

Michael Kemmet

While I would also like it if George went ahead and gave background more freely, I have to say this one was fun for me. I've read the six books and watched the film before, so it was really fun watching both faces when certain moments or phrases appeared or were clearly about to happen. You'd see George's "holy shit, here it comes" right next to Simone's "what in the world's going on?" It was cool in a subtle way. That being said, I'd be more than happy if George talked more in part 2. Second, I just want to add a couple cents about the meaning of the dream of Paul's death. George mentioned that Paul's visions can be wrong or only show possible paths. I'd say that's half right. What Paul was seeing was the death of Paul Atreides. We know that Paul has seen a bloody future where a holy war is fought in his name. Those of us that have read the book, know that the name being fought for isn't Paul Atreides. So this was a double metaphor. If Paul wanted to die as Paul Atreides(with history remembering him by that name), he had to lose to Jamis and die on the rocks. But by surviving and killing Jamis, the person known as Paul Atreides is now effectively dead. History will now remember him by the name we will learn in Part 2. Also, that means that Part 1 is the life and death of Paul Atreides, while Part 2 will be the birth and life(and death?) of Paul ____. Those of us who have read the book know that the true branching moment comes a little later in the story, but moving it up to the fight with Jamis worked perfectly as a place to split the movie into two parts. Two thumbs up on the change. Finally ... got spice? lol

Check out the 1984 version of Dune - its outrageous and still epic despite its shortfalls (of which there are many). It is definitely worth watching.

Andrew T

When George and Simon were talking about how the character of "the chosen one" could be cliche. I was immediately reminded of The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy. Was this ever a consideration? I mean I haven't seen it since it came out in theaters, so it may not have aged well (unlike Eddie Murphy himself, haha). Anyway, back to watching the Dune reaction...

Martin Nicholls

I've been trying to watch this movie for over a year now - when I bought/moved into my new house last year I built a really high end home cinema setup, huge OLED screen (it's now been replaced with a 100" laser projection system, Amazon spring sale amiright?), Atmos sound system, the works, lined up Shang Chi and Dune, then Shang Chi angered me to my core, got maybe a third of the way through Dune and packed it all up and every time I've tried to rewatch this or really any new movie I remembered how angry Shang Chi made me and couldn't do it, so I have a lot of movies I need to see but it was all stuck behind Dune. This reaction definitely helped me through it so maybe I'll be able to watch the movies I have backed up behind it :) This movie is cast like I was casting director, lol, lots of actors I really really like though I don't care what you say, Jason Momoa will always be Ronon Dex to me, eat it GoT fans. Funny thing is this movie has the tone of Jupiter Ascending to me even though that movie is universally hated. I did really like it though, the pacing is unusual but it totally works, and they did that one thing that the original Matrix movie did that they forgot to do in the sequels: they put care and attention into the vfx so it looks absolutely flawless, this is going to hold up for decades and that's a big deal. Hyped for the sequel now.

Ian Marshall

Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson claim that those two books are based on Frank Herbert's notes but many people are skeptical due to both his failure to let anyone (other than Anderson) see these notes and the wild inconsistencies with Frank's work.

Ian Marshall

15 books? There are only 6 Dune books. The 6 books written by Frank Herbert. Not the...abominations puked out by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Jeromy M

My friends and I are flying 3700kms just to watch the second film on IMAX upon release.

Duckfest

I've been waiting for this reaction. Thank you, it was as awesome as I hoped it would be.

Adverb

I hope you watch Lynch's Dune at some point.

David Martin

Denis has the advantage of the latest technology for creating scale, so I think Lucas is a fitting comparison. Both were/are ahead of their time.

Jack Burton

George did a little spoiler in there

David RedEagle

I was confused until i saw the runtime when they said part one. I thought they meant they are splitting the full reaction into two parts. And since part one is just called Dune. I was like WTF 0_o

Thijs van Drenth

I grew up playing the Dune PC games and then tried to read the books, but since I probably was too young and English is not my native language I could not get through the first one. I really like the first Dune movie from 1984 and I think that it is because of nostalgia of that movie and the PC games that I did not really like this new adaptation. Giving the movie another chance by watching it alongside Simone and George did help a lot to appreciate it more for what it is. I think it is great that the Dune universe/lore gets more attention now and hopefully it will lead to more entertaining movies, series and/or games.

Steve

don't read the book before the next movie. if you can't resist then don't read beyond this point in. the book. you really need to be surprised by the amazing things to come. Steve

Chris Jarrett

Agreed--if they've gotten this far, just watch the second movie then read the book. It's a fairly easy read

Ph4ZeD

Rewatched this to prepare for Dune 2, how are you guys going to resist seeing it in cinemas?

DarkJokester

Sorry if it's a little too much, Loved the reaction :D. About the true meaning of the word Jihad. "The exact meaning of the term jihād depends on context; it has often been erroneously translated in the West as “holy war.” Jihad, particularly in the religious and ethical realm, primarily refers to the human struggle to promote what is right and to prevent what is wrong." Ending your own life and taking innocet lives are both unforgivable sins according to the Quran... That disqualifies "the terrorists" from what the term actually means. How can you promote what is right by doing what the Quran expressly said is forbidden. Anyway it's always best to do your own research and not rely on what the media tells you. :D

Ph4ZeD

Can’t remember if I made this comment on another post but is there any chance you would consider doing a LOTR-style rewatch ahead of Dune 2?

michael denny

very late comment but just rewatched with u guys and loved movie and reaction only thing that bugged me being a dune fan was the laser vs Duncan's Thopter. it was shielded and had the laser hit it would have been very very bad for everything in a very large radius.
