The Wire: Season 4 - Episode 1 & 2 - Patreon Version

Tony

Season 4!!! YAYYYYYYYY🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Śéáń

Just so that at least one complaint can be given, since you've gone straight to the new season this time: "When are you guys going to take a break from The Wire? Please please go to a bad tv show so that I can get my Tuesday evening back! angryemoji.jpg"

JayF

Any chance we could get Breaking Bad next? Much as I love The Wire (I was one of the subs that asked you to react to it) BB is the best show from start to finish that I've ever seen. Calm down Better Call Saul fans. I just haven't finished that show yet but it's right up there too.

Blacky

Breaking Bad is probably too long, and too popular: how many people want to rewatch it fully right now? I would suggest shorter less known (while still very good) shows, like Legion or Sherlock

JonnyBoomstick

I honestly wouldn't mind Breaking Bad or Walking Dead. Breaking Bad even has a movie that takes place post series called El Camino. Any of these would be absolutely amazing!

Nicodemus Archleone

Good Omens and perhaps Staged would be a good palette cleanser before diving into another heavy drama like Breaking Bad.

j c

What about The Wire when are you going back to it?

Stu84

S4E1 was the first episode of the wire i saw and i was hooked as soon as i saw Snoops opening scene. She is played by Felicia Pearson, who was another of the shows RL gangsters. She spent her early years in prison for murder and this was her first acting job.

Jeff K

If they want another relatively short palate cleanser that's drastically different in terms of tone (and being light and uplifting and feel-good), I'd throw stuff like Ted Lasso, Schitt's Creek, and The Good Place in the mix too. Lasso is only 34 episodes total (once they finish this season), The Good Place is only four seasons, and Schitt's is a little longer at 80 episodes but given it's a pretty standard sitcom in terms of episode lengths, they fly by and you could easily get 3 or 4 episodes per reaction.

GDC

To answer George's question: Yes, Season 4 is around the time the Baltimore City officials started to have a problem with the show because of how it depicted city corruption lol. Before then, they were proud of how it showed the city and talked about the origins of its problems, but when it got into the role politicians played in it all...

Jeff K

I would love for them to react to Better Call Saul eventually so I’m on board with a BB watch first. I haven’t really ever found myself gravitating back to BB, despite recognizing it’s a top 5 show of all-time. (I do think BCS surpassed it by the end.)

Pam Nail

I love the opening scene with Snoop buying the nail gun. The way the employee's face gets progressively more panicked, like "Did I ... just sell a murder weapon?!" And her saying "He meant Lexus but he didn't know it" KILLS me. I love Felicia Pearson! Also, this season is about education and schools, and I love how even this scene is about learning, with Snoop being "educated" about the power tools. "Deez nuts" has been around since at least when I was in high school in the early 90s. It's generally credited to Dr. Dre, who had a track on 1992's The Chronic called "Deeez Nuuuts." But I'm positive I heard it before that.

redddfer44

Yeap, it has the same showrunner from start to finish, David Simon. He planned it as a novel-on-television spanning five seasons. Ed Burns himself, one of the writers of the show who's collaborated with David Simon on lots of occasions, went from being a cop to being a school teacher.

Kevin Hoffmann

Just to refer to the ending conversation, with G&S wondering how Prez will "tie back" to the case. I think Season Four is where the show really decides it's not about a specific case anymore. Yes, it all ties together. Yes, all the pieces matter. But you don't really want to watch the school or politics scenes looking for a connection to the cops or criminals. It's about showing another broken system and how they all tie together, but "the case" is not really the end goal anymore. Prez is what gets us in the door for the schools, the schools aren't a way for Prez to keep helping the cops.

droodly

No generation before the current one was intellectual enough to come up with "Dees Nuts". I'm assuming there was some time travel involved.

droodly

TV show requests: Deadwood Good Omens Watchmen HBO series Lovecraft Country

G P

My recommendation is to not watch the walking dead - its terrible, don't let people fool you

UNC

Tv shows I’d like to you react to: Breaking Bad universe, Succesion, Barry, The Sopranos.

Ben

I know it will never happen, but as everyone seems to be leaving their series requests I'm simply going to say; Please return to RDR2

Luis

I think it’d be fun to a single season Anime show like Ping-Pong. Or Korra if you wanted to do a longer animated show.

Jeff K

Welcome to quite possibly the greatest single season of television ever produced.

droodly

Dude... Did it hurt you? Just recommend a show you would like to see. A series that spanned 11 years is clearly not "terrible" to everyone.

Spacedone

I love this season. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit!

Jeff K

It's a crime they didn't put "That's a good strong dick you got there and I see you know how to use it" as the episode 2 quote.

Alex Ch

Deadwood would be so much fun.

Stu84

on the education point, Snoop learns because she can relate the lesson to her world.

Erik D

Best season of television, IMO.

G P

Watch OZ - nothing else like it out there, another HBO masterpiece

redddfer44

I think that a 90s scifi show wouldn't gather enough viewers, but just saying: the creator of Babylon 5 has been known to support reactors to that show on Patreon. To my knowledge, it was also the first American tv show to do the "a novel on television in five seasons" thing that The Wire is famous for.

John Richards

You have to give the producers (they were not called "showrunners" at the time) of The Wire some credit for risk taking. They took a critically acclaimed show in its fourth season and put 4 kids with limited/no TV experience in major roles. The kids are played by kids, not 18 year olds playing junior high schoolers. You see the actors physically grow up as the season goes on (one kid is about a foot taller by the last episode). These young actors deliver an amazing performance. Some of the credit goes to their acting coach - Baltimore native, the late Robert Chew, AKA "Prop Joe"

sarCC

Surprised to see you two already starting the 4th season. Maybe I'll just binge-watch the series with you over the summer. I wish I could recommend you start Homicide: Life On The Street after this, but it's not streaming anywhere. You could check out The Corner; it's very short and sort of a prequel to The Wire. Otherwise, I'd say Generation Kill is a good follow-up from the same team(it's also the best, most accurate depiction of the modern-day military this veteran has ever seen).

Darrell B.

Curious, do they ever interact with their Patreons? Or do they just post and collect the cash? New here so not sure how they roll..

Cinebinge

Hi Darrell, we do interact at times. We read every comment and message, and respond when we do have something to say, though not as often as we would like but when necessary we do respond.

Astraeos

Generation Kill is amazing. David Simon is so good. Ziggy is in it too, and he's amazing. Same with Alexander Skarsgard? I forget which one, but one of the Skarsgards.

Astraeos

Just here to say again I appreciate you guys so much for watching The Wire, for liking the show so much, and for sticking it out to get to this point in the show. You guys rock. These reactions have been super fun to go along with. Never even known anybody in my friends group or work groups that have ever even seen The Wire, so this is a great substitute. Also George, you and I are on the exact same wave lengths. I mean you haven't seen Season 4 yet, but my personal ranking for the whole show is 2, 4, 1, 3, 5. And that doesn't even say anything about the quality of the seasons or whatever, I just connect a lot more with the themes and overall story of both season 2 and 4 more than any of the other seasons.

januarysnow

What Astaeos said. Yeah, The Wire is slow and complex so it dosnt really hook a lot of reactors , other reactors you can tell arent into it, but I think I could tell over time that Cinebinge started to see how the characters are so detailed and real and get more into it. TV these days isnt really given the time to tell a story organically like The Wire did but I digress.

Jay

Hot take - this a good show! Also, Norman is a great addition.

john blake

You guys are so awesome. It’s great fun watching this with you all.

Terry Van Belle

Throughout this season, watch how many men try to step up to become surrogate fathers

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

The first time I remember hearing that "Deez nuts" joke was on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", and that came out in '92, but it's probably older than that. Edit: I just listened to it, it's actually a song called "Deeez Nuts" but they don't set the joke up the same, so I'm not sure it counts.

Jesse Coombs

"Maybe Prez can adopt them?" Or someone else...

Ron Corleone

Episode 11 of season 3 is my favorite episode of The Wire, but season 4 of The Wire is my favorite season of ANYTHING!!! This show's greatest achievement is the arcs of Carver and Prez. I hated Carver, Herc, and Prez with a passion at the start of season 1 yet the first episode of season 4, Prez and Carver are two of my favorites. And the good thing is, their redemption never felt forced or "in your face", just a natural progression that slowly happened over seasons.

Jeff K

At the same time, too, while Herc is still pretty much a piece of shit, every single thing he does and where he is as a character makes perfect sense because of how well written and performed the character is.

Gary Fixler

George looking all confused about the use of lye, and me about to comment why they use it, and then he's like "Lye needs to be on bare skin, at a ratio of 2:1 lye/body weight, and disintegration happens over the course of 2-3 weeks in an exothermic reac--"

Kyle

Woo! Became a member just in time for my favorite season of my favorite show! Enjoy you guys!

Quigonjim25

So, I'm not sure if its been recommended (I'd imagine it has), but 'Barry' is an absolutely amazing show, well worth a watch.

Ginger

Yeah sure but WHEN ARE YOU WATCHING THE WIRE SEASON 3??? :p

Ginger

Two great shows you might enjoy that are somewhat underrated: "Travelers" and "The Peripheral".

Danika Silva

Wondering when the next installment of KFP will be available 🤔 👀 😕😐😭🇨🇦

Maarten Martens

That opening scene of S4E1 is so good, whenever I need a quick Wire fix I put it on. Shit is tight yo.

Luxury Interior

The woman who plays vice principal Donnelly got the most Bawlmer of Bawlmer accents.

David Brophy

Have y’all considered watching the sci-fi version of the Jumanji movies, Zathura? By the same book writer that wrote Jumanji.

John Richards

they are not using lye - it's quick lime. Quicklime can aid in eradicating the stench of decomposition.

Shonnicus

If you go back and watch Game of Thrones the actor playing Tommy Carcetti, aka Little Finger will every now and then slip into his Baltimore accent on GoT as Little Finger.

Einherj

I suggest the HBO series Carnivàle. Just two seasons. Great story. Great characters.

The Film Effect

This is a top 5 season of any tv show ever. It’s so damn good.

james repka

The new version of the theme song was commissioned for the show and was arranged and performed by a group of local Baltimore teens, Ivan Ashford, Markel Steele, Cameron Brown, Tariq Al-Sabir and Avery Bargasse, credited as Domaje. Also note that each season's credits contain clips from previous seasons, emphasizing the show's gradual pull-back from focusing only on drug dealers and police in S1, adding the the drug smugglers and the destruction of the working class (and unions) in S2, city politics and reformers in S3, to S4 and how the education system tries with varying levels of success and failure to prepare young folk for the world they will be entering while knowing little of the world they come from. Note that Walker (who robs Randy of his $200) is our first portrayal of an actual corrupt police officer. Not lazy or dumb, he just exploits his power over residents for his own gain, much like Avon or Marlo (but not Omar who only steals from the advantaged). Walker is (along with Carver's partner Colichio -- and perhaps Herc and Carver in season 1) representative of the real-life Baltimore cops we will meet in David Simon's We Own This City, a docudrama about corruption in the BPD that was ongoing during production of The Wire and continued until the participants were arrested and prosecuted in 2017. Marlo appeared to be very impressed with the lack of fear in Michael's eyes when he confronted him -- Same with Cutty, who ignored his entourage of young single mothers to admire Michael's technique on the bag. Namond carries Wee Bey's blood in his veins, but while he talks a big game he clearly doesn't have Bey's drive or intensity. Randy has a big smile and appears to be the idea man in the group, and might have the best home environment of the four. At this point we know little about Dukie other than that he is clearly the most at-risk kid we've met in the show -- he seems to be one step away from where Wallace was at in season 1, and even that step might be an improvement. Be on the lookout for more familiar faces to appear in the next few episodes.

Paul T Hewes

the best season of the wire.

Robert Cooper

Maybe excluding the first, but yeah. The characters this season are all just amazing.

Chris

Quite mad that youre questionjng the show runnwr... David Frickin Simon man. The guys a genius. The writing team has more input from actual crime novelists by this point though theyve been involved feom the start. David Simon. Look hom up. Hes a tv making god and IS THE Wire .

SlaverStudios

In terms of seasons (I like this conversation because while shows can get worse, seasons are suspended in perpetual quality), I'd have to say its: 1. Game of Thrones S1. 2. The Wire S4 3. Fargo S2 4. True Detective S1 5. Breaking Bad S3

Tenn Seven

They didn't talk about Chris or Snoop at all, nor about Marlo. The season opening scenes with Snoop, Chris, and the nail gun rival Omar's court scenes for best in the series.

Kangdarius

I’m not watching along with these but I just came to say this is one of the best seasons of any show ever imo. Right up there with stuff like the 4th season of dexter.

RarelySober

"in life people really don't get happy endings; unless they pay for it" is a pretty good quote

latsöm

Late reply, but the opening here is superb, because Hilti truly makes best in class tools. Other stuff is up there at this point, but at the time Hilti was NOT the Cadillac of power tools, they were the Toyota Hilux of power tools. Also about nail guns: They have safety stuff, so you have to press it to the thing you are nailing before it can trigger. Those things can be removed, but you still won't have any range with it, but close range you can definitely kill someone. I know a guy who, due to his impatient nature, removed that safety mechanism and ended up accidentally shooting himself in the head (it jammed, he looked at the point of it and it went off). Luckily the nail hit his brow, the really thick part of the skull, so he was fine, but a few millimeters downwards and he would have died. The fun part is that he did not call an ambulance; he called a cab.

Hexon66

Never did Carcetti have a Baltimore accent. Listen to the Assistant Principal.... THAT'S a Baltimore accent.

Hexon66

You probably have to see it through the prism of their experience. They're used to, let's call it mediocre, storytelling. At least it seems so, judging by their cinema and show references, and the reliance on standard character archetypes to understand motivation.
