Kevin Is Sexy

This movie is a direct parody of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. If you've never seen that movie then unfortunately you missed a lot of the jokes and references.

jmundt33a

There were other parts too. The thing is, ‘90s Mel Brooks was Airplane autopilot (or what we might call these days Scary Movie autopilot).

UnSafeStu

Oh yeah, my favourite comedy. Along side Hot Shots Part Deux. Glad you enjoyed it.

BND

this movie is a parody of the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie, a lot of the jokes make fun of that movie so some of the jokes you may not get if you haven't seen it, like the English accent joke.

Jason Pratt

🎶 sometimes the ups outnumber the downs, but not in Nottinghamn…

Onikaze

no deeper joke than Mervin is not a typical name ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves had Kostner in the main role and was criticized for either not having a good accent or not having a consistent one, I forget while Alan Rickman played the sheriff. Dave Chappelle's Sherwood Forest landed on us speech was a direct reference to Malcom X's speech, Denzel portrayed him in the movie.

Sweet Owl

29:23 George if you were referring to the ius primae noctis, it's actually just a myth, there has never been any documented proof of its existence, but movies like Braveheart made people believe it was actually like that.

BND

It's funny how so many people still believe this myth just because it was depicted in a few movies.

overdev

I really miss visual comedy like it's done in this movie, the only place you can find that in modern movies is only in animated films and a few from Edgar Wright

Kris

Yeah, the opening credits thing is directly riffing on that one.

BNJ

George, remember how in Robocop you thought it was funny that the bad guy's name was Clarence? Same thing here, except his name's Mervin.

Adam Wetstein

I dont know why but i never llike this film. Also didn’t love Spaceballs. But most other Mel Brooks stuff is great

Danika Silva

Sing on Simone....some of us remember that song 🎵 🎶

Happy Hanukkah

20:59 How 'bout dat? (I hate myself.) By the way, the Sheriff is played by the accomplished Roger Rees, whom you might remember as the drily hilarious British ambassador Lord Marbury on the West Wing.

Jeff K

To me, Roger Rees will always, first and foremost, be Robin Colcord from Cheers. He was so good in that show. EDIT: Also, I am just now starting the reaction and lo and behold, George mentions Cheers a mere 25 seconds in!? What are the odds?

Jeff K

I love Spaceballs but I think it also hit me at a better time than this movie did, but yeah, I remember being super disappointed by this movie. I've always been a little surprised at what a cult following it's gained over the years, but I'm never going to be mad at people loving Mel Brooks. Few people in Hollywood history deserve blanket appreciation as much as Mel.

Niklas Ericsson

Please give "Dracula: Dead and Loving It!" a try in the future. My favorite Mel Brooks film.

IR4TE

Still haven't watched his first movie 'The Producers' from 1968, still my favourite.

Alan Kobb

Actually, you'd get more of the jokes if you knew more Yiddish... This movie was a response to the wildly popular Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner, who didn't even try to put on an English accent. In reality, you would have gotten more of the jokes if you were Jewish. It's a shame, but I'm afraid that I'm not allowed to tell you those. You'll have to see a moyle and get snipped first... :-) There were several references to History of the World Part I, like when the Rabbi says "***************************" and the other time when he said "*********************", so yes, you missed those. Other Mel Brooks movies? Yes, The Producers. There's the not very good Dracula: Dead and Loving it, starring Leslie Nielson (Airplane!), Silent Movie, which is funny in places. Also, Brook's parody of Hitchcock, High Anxiety.

Maarten Martens

My favourite Mel Brooks film, glad you loved it too!

JustALilTired

There are a ton of references to Robin Hood Prince of Thieves in this one, it’s basically a direct spoof. Highly recommend that one, unintentionally hilarious in it’s own right and featuring the late, great Alan Rickman as the sheriff of Nottingham.
