Robinhood: Men in Tights - Patreon Version

Comments

Jay Davis

I heard once that George likes men in tights. Or was it Simone. Oh well. Let's watch!

MrCAL

My prediction... Simone will love this movie.

Edward Smyth

So glad you did this movie. loved it growing up

JayF

Well now you have to watch the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie as this movie is primarily a parody of that one. Good pick though.

JediLounger

As another poster mentioned, this is mostly a parody of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). Should be fascinating if you guys decide to watch that after watching this first haha.

Odd Thomas

Can we give the comedy a rest and do some horror? The Conjuring Malignant Scream franchise The Autopsy of Jane Doe Insidious 30 Days of Night Bram Stoker's Dracula Resident Evil franchise

Odd Thomas

If you can ignore Costner's American accent, it's a blast. Still the best Robin Hood imo AND Alan frickin' Rickman is the villain!

Astraeos

Robin Hood by Ridley Scott is hugely underrated. It's Russel Crowe, c'mon.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

The english accent joke is because the other actors who played Robin Hood were usually from the US, Kevin Costner played Robin Hood 2 years before this came out

Jameson Yates

The Dave Chapelle speech was indeed a Denzel reference. Kind of. He was parodying Denzel who had just starred and won acclaim for portraying Malcolm X in the biopic the year before.

Tay Schumaker

As someone else said, without seeing prince of thieves most of this is probably lost on you

JayF

Side note - Amy Yasbek (Marian) is John Ritter's widow.

Odd Thomas

Just realised the Sheriff of Rottingham was in The Prestige; he was the solicitor. And didn't Amy Yasbeck do the singing for Ariel?

Raven Dark

Yeah... I'd like to know how no one told Simone and George to watch Prince of Thieves first, or, if someone did, why they didn't watch it first. I guess it didn't matter because they ended up liking it anyway. I've never been a fan of this film, so I skipped ahead to listen to their thoughts. I'm glad they liked it.

Raven Dark

I've never been a fan of this film, but I skipped ahead to listen to your discussion on it, as I almost always do with you two even when I'm not into the movie itself. I was really worried and kind of bummed that you didn't see Robin Hood Prince of Thieves first, but that's mostly because I thought you'd be too busy scratching your heads at the jokes to enjoy it. I'm glad that didn't happen, and you liked it anyway. Now, it would be fun to see you two react to Prince of Thieves, and it'll be interesting to see you "get" the things you missed in reverse. I loved Prince of Thieves, and honestly, I didn't even notice Costner's bad accent until someone pointed it out, but I know that makes me an exception, not the norm. Also, Simone and George, you have got to react to Dances With Wolves. That is a much better showcase of his acting skills. He really is an incredible actor. It's a long one, but it's worth the time.

JayF

I've been asking for Dances With Wolves for a while now. Also some of Costner's other movies like Field of Dreams, No Way Out, and The Untouchables.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Mel Brooks movies, you need to watch Dracula Dead and Loving It as it combines Mel Brooks and Leslie Nielsen, about The Producers that Simone mentions is a remake so you might also want to check the original

Odd Thomas

You forget Cary Elwes was the weaselly guy in Twister who got sucked off and died. (looks deadpan to camera)

redddfer44

"The Producers" is possibly Brooks's most outrageous comedy and my fave Gene Wilder performance, too. "Silent Movie" is very good, but it's also silent, so it's not everyone's cup of tea. "High Anxiety" is a Hitchcock parody and is probably not worth watching if you haven't seen a lot of Hitchcock films. "To Be Or Not To Be" is not directed by Mel Brooks, but it really feels like one of his -- especially because he's the star of the film.

redddfer44

Also, dang, I watched the YT version so I'm not sure about all the jokes you missed. But: In addition to being a parody of the Kevin Costner/Alan Rickman film, this parodies the swashbuckling Robin Hood of the 1930s starring Errol Flynn. Patriot is a missile, one of the first LAWs: "lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) are a type of autonomous military system that can independently search for and engage targets based on programmed constraints and descriptions" (Wikipedia). It was topical at the time the movie was filmed. Dirty Enzo is a combination of Clint Eastwood's iconic character(s) in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns and Dirty Harry.

Monica Alarcon

I love this movie, you made my sunday a happy one!

Travis

Chappelle with the glasses on was parodying Malcom X and the chop celebration on the stands is an ode to the chop celebration done at Atlanta Braves and Florida State Seminole games

Monica Alarcon

I really hope you do Mel Brooks' Silent Movie, nobody has ever reacted to it and it's one of my favorites... oh and Marty Feldman (I-gore) is in it...

Robert C

And was the reporter in The Mask which you've seen on this channel.

Thomas Yanez

Mel Brooks movies range from nigh genius to ... well, this.

Justin Wolford

You wanna see a movie where carrie elweys doesn't smile then watch "SAW"

Ben

Just dropping by to request 'Stand by Me' (1986) again! Feels like a great movie to watch in the Summertime. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Squ33ky

oooomph I guess sometimes we get turkeys too

James O'Sullivan

Think it was quite a big joke at the time, most famous English folk hero and the actors had a stand out US accents compared to the rest of the cast. There's an Eddie Izzard skit about it too

david moreland

Holy shit! I never noticed the executioner is wearing the same outfit as the Ruler in Plan 9 from Outer Space.

akaTheBARON

🖤As others have pointed out this was a direct parody (for the most part) of Kevin Costner's Robin Hood. They made jokes about other things, and a lot of the jokes were funny enough just as is, without knowing what exactly they were referencing, but there were jokes you definitely wouldn't have gotten having not seen it. It's exactly what Space Balls was to Star Wars. So Prince of Thieve, I highly recommend it. Even without having seen Men In Tights, it's a great movie on its own. What's funny is, having seen Prince of Thieves first, you would have gotten more jokes... but if you watch Prince of Thieves AFTER seeing this, it will make it a comedy in a small way because you'll see something, remember the Men In Tights reference to it and laugh LOL

Max Krause

Dracula: Dead and Loving It is probably the only Mel Brooks parody movies that you're missing. I loved it as a kid but as I noticed with Goldmember, my taste in comedy has...developed over the years so I can't guarantee that you'll like it. It does have Leslie Nielsen as Dracula though. Like the Swiss flag, that's a huge plus.

Luis

Please do a reaction to a Wong Kar Wai film. Some of the will pay off a few of the jokes in Everything Everywhere… His most popular films are In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express.

Logan Kerlee

xD I'm so happy that you both enjoyed this! This one's my top favorite Mel Brook's film. He's so great at putting films like this together. The missing movies aren't nearly as great but there's still things to enjoy from each.

BlindPanda

you should check out “Stir Crazy” Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are comedy gold 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Ginger

Wow, you are on a roll watching all my favorites lately! <3 <3 <3

FranciscoGios

This one was having a show down with Charlie Sheen’s Hot Shots! Part Deux, that’s all I remembered. Also the Godfather scene was hilarious; it’s fun re-watching this movies with you guys.

Ginger

I think the longer pauses are basically laugh breaks for when people watch it in theaters. Otherwise you wouldn't hear the next line. Of course watching it alone at home makes these pauses kind of awkward. ^^ The "english accent" line was a jab at Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood. Prince of thieves". Watch that one if you want to get 90% of the jokes here. ;) It has Alan Rickman as the Sherrif - it's great :D Cary Elwes smiley demeanor here is mostly a reference to the classic Errol Flynn Robin Hood films.

Gary Fixler

I jotted down notes as I watched :-D The "Unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent" was poking fun of Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which came out 2 years earlier. "A mime is a terrible thing to waste" at the beginning of the castle dinner scene was a riff on "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," which was the tagline of a bunch of UNCF (United Negro College Fund) commercials in the 70s and 80s. Ahchoo's "We didn't land on Sherwood Forest... Sherwood Forest landed on us," was a Malcolm X quote from his 1964 "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech, but it was Plymouth Rock. The "Hey Abbot!" (Abbot: "I hate that guy") was from Abbott and Costello. In their vaudeville routines and movies Lou Costello would yell Bud Abbott's name exaggeratedly like that. I don't recognize Mervyn as anything more than a name they thought sounded nerdy. The only Mervyn I can think of in the US was a department store - Mervyn's.

Ginger

I never noticed that the crossbow sniper is in the "royal folio depository". That's dark. :D In terms of other Mel Brooks movies, I'd say the best ones are "Spaceballs", "Robin Hood" and "History of the World: Part 1" There is also "Dracula - Dead and loving it" which is okay but probably the worst of his parody movies. It has Leslie Nielsen though, who is always great.

Anodyne

Said with respect, you missed a huge number of funny lines because you hadn't watched Prince of Thieves before this. Always, always, always watch the movies Mel Brooks is satirizing before you watch his movie.

Ken Quick

Yes. the Patriot arrow was a Patriot missile gag. They were in the public consciousness at the time because of their highly-publicized use against Iraqi Scud missiles during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (i.e. the first Iraq war.) Also, the extended cut of Prince of Thieves makes Latrine's infatuation with the Sheriff... problematic.

Raven Dark

Seconding Stand By Me! I love that movie, and I think Simone and George would too!

Funny That

Or rather they where not and hence the jokes back in the day. Patriots are good for tanks, troops, and probably helicopters, but anything moving at the speeds of fighter jets or SCUDs... nah. Some of the SCUDs where duds, but the Israelis government couldn't admit that it was just taking hits (for the western alliance of the day) without the populous understandably loosing their shit.

Ken Quick

Ahh, it's been long enough that I can remember their presence in pop culture, but forgotten the context.

Tanx

the crowd at the contest was doing "the Chop" it was something the crowds at Atlanta Braves and Florida Seminoles games would do to rally the team. was huge back in the 90s especially when both had really good teams. and as someone already said there was a ton of jokes about the 90s Costner movie where he couldn't even bother to fake an accent...probably better than trying and failing like Dick Van Dyke did with Mary Poppins. Cristian Slater also didn't try faking an accent in the Costner movie either. you two should still watch it. some of the scenes will make you laugh after the fact.

BlindPanda

I’ve heard they’ve done Silver streak already but haven’t uploaded it yet 👌🏻

Lyle Morgan

Mel Brooks had really lost his fastball by this point. Mediocre comedy at best.

Eik104

For some reason I never caught the Home Alone joke. Thanks Simone :)

Rain322

I've always been told that the "right of the lord," "right of the first night," etc. was just a myth but I did some preliminary research (fortunately) it doesn't appear to be a real thing

Trevor S Bright

"Dracula: Dead & Loving It" is another decent Mel Brooks film. Like "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" did for "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", Mel's Dracula did for Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with Gary Oldman as Dracula & Keanu Reeves with the worst English accent ever (maybe why Kevin Costner decided not to do an accent for his Robin Hood??)....but Mel's Dracula also makes fun of the old 1930s Universal Dracula just like "Young Frankenstein" did for the 1930s Universal Frankenstein films.

China Andronicus

The Producers musical was definitely based on Mel Brooks' film! Both are fantastic and worth a watch.
