JonnyBoomstick

Hello and good morning I hope you're doing amazing! cant wait to see this

JonnyBoomstick

For the future i was wondering if Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad could be possible? If I were you I would watch Breaking Bad first. It would make Better Call Saul that much more entertaining trust me

John Richards

Looking up B-more politics is actually a bit of a spoiler for the series...

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeit

Namond's mom probably didn't let Dukie in for the same reason a lot of people wouldn't let Bubbles into their home-- hygiene, smell, etc. Also, they likely didn't have Prez shadow someone first as a TA because they're desperate due to the teacher shortage, as mentioned in his introduction scene. I think they even said that he didn't even officially get his teaching certificate yet, but some government initiative allowed him to get an early start for that same reason.

Jeff K

Agreed. While David Simon has denied Tommy is based on any one particular person, there's one real life inspiration that's pretty obvious so looking into his political career will spoil Tommy's arc since it pretty closely mirrors this person's actual life around that time.

Stu84

Simone walks into a shop - "I need a water bottle" Shopkeeper - "what size, medium, large?" "Atlantic ocean size please"

Chris

Did anyone tell you about The Deacon yet ? Played by Little Melvin and one of the main inspirations for Avon Barksdale. Locked up by Ed Burns (joint show runner) by a wiretap back in the day.

Carla Davis

Maybe tell them which order they should watch those shows in. It would make more sense if they watch them in the correct order.

Carla Davis

You will eventually find out why Michael is acting that way with Dennis. Don't want to spoil it for you. And what Royce was doing was not illegal but maybe unethical.

John Richards

ahhh... wrong. The political story line was written by William F Zorzi, who covered local politics for the Baltimore Sun, right up to the point where he left the paper to join "The Wire"s writing team. Most of the political figures introduced in season 3 and 4 line up pretty closely with real political figures. For example, the Council President may not have been, as Herc put it, "as hot as balls", but the seat was held by a rather attractive woman. While the show was running, Simon had to go out of the way to say over and over that Tommy was NOT based on a real person, but pretty clearly, he was "inspired" by one. They just changed the white guy from Irish to Italian.

Jeff K

Jamie Hector, who plays Marlo, has said that after his character started getting established, he could tell something changed and people knew who he was because he would be walking down the streets in New York and people would see him and cross to the other side. That’s how much a fictional character scared people (and how intimidating Jamie Hector is in the role).

What Royce was doing to the Carcetti campaign is absolutely illegal, in theory. But also very hard to prove, in practice, because he's doing it "by the book". Most countries have elections laws against tempering with other campaigns, abuse of power, and actual elective process. But Royce is not sending muscle breaking knees or burning offices, he's just directing the (in theory) normal working of a city (enforcing parking laws, road maintenance, and so on). That's legal. What's not legal is the intent (to fuck with Carcetti) and the result (to fuck with Carcetti's campaign). Although, the selective removal of campaign signs is probably the easiest thing to see and prove, probably the most blatantly illegal. All of which is very, well normal is not the right word, but habitual. I've seen or heard about these things at every level of election in France, in Spain, in the UK, in the US, and so on. If it goes overboard, if someone is doing it too hard or too often, there might be an investigation. In the US the FBI would not be influenced by Royce, and has a mandate to go after political corruption and shenanigans. While bad, this is very small fry compared to PACs and SuperPACS, and compared to re-districting: one you have the power, you change the electoral map to ensure your re-election and fuck up your more dangerous future opponents. Which is unfortunately legal in the US, and _extremely_ common. Edit: by the way, the "walking around money" is also totally illegal, even more so than the city services shenanigans. It's a straight breach of campaign finance laws, using a fake game to get unaccounted unofficial money to pay for unaccounted (so, probably illegal) campaign shit.

Chris

For the Sheeeeeet thing... Check out this same actor, Isaiah Whitlock Jnr, in a film with Edward Norton, The 25th Hour ...https://youtu.be/wZZivDg3cpY

PIG

Lol jeez. You guys give them no room to figure it out for their selves after some time. The fun is in THEM working it out :)

Travis

Cant wait

Grand Moff Slackin'

“That’s illegal!” he yells at the screen while watching The Wire. Never change, George. 🙏

So the biggest "Mandela Effect" people have with this show is thinking that Stringer started the co-op. The co-op was a thing before Stringer was part of it. Prop Joe recruited him to be part of it. He was positioned to be the face of it(for reasons I'll speculate on at another time) but it was not his creation whatsoever. I think the "Idris Elba effect" tends to make people think all the positive decisions made on the drug/gang side of things were all Stringer's decisions and overlook the many many many screw ups he had. Biggest lie ever told by Mayor Royce or by anyone on this show was Royce telling Herc that he heard he was a good cop...nothing could be further from the truth. Avon is a better humanitarian than Herc is a cop. Jimmy and Bunk are better role models than Herc is a cop. I'd trust Clay Davis and Prop Joe not to screw me over before I trusted Herc to do good police work.

Hyperdryve

I could never get into this show for some reason. I should give it another shot though since there are so many of them on here

John Richards

You're off the mark on co-op (but spot on about Herc). The creation of the co-op was shown early in season 3, with the group taking a vote to form it. Shamrock was taking minutes for the meeting, Prop Joe congratulated the gangsters on carrying it like Republicans. Stringer and Prop Joe were basically co-founders.

Astraeos

My favorite two hours of the week right here! These are two really good episodes too, lots going on.

Dk

How do you not laugh as soon as the drugs just randomly fall at Omar's feet lol

Agent Squirrels

Jamie Hector is fantastic and it's definitely an acting choice rather than the blankness of the actor. He's in the show Bosch and it's like night and day. He's so cold on The Wire but has all the warmth and charm in the world on Bosch.

D. Kennedy

Namond's mom didn't let Dukie in because you know Dukie is the like the dirty kid. He doesn't have the best clothes, he smells, he's living worse than all of them. Namond's mom isn't a good person, so it's for superficial reasons why she didn't let him in even if he is a kid, she doesn't care.

Travis

He doesn’t want to stay in the car with him at the end because he is afraid that he is gay and is grooming him. As evidence from earlier on when Dennis rests his arm on his shoulder at the gym the kid quickly slides over. That’s also why he is quick to talk about how the boxers gf must be fine af because he’s trying to drop clues that he’s straight. Common signs of someone who has has a history of sexual trauma/been perpetrated against. They’re not comfortable with other males who take a lot of interest in them without wanting anything obvious in return.

Mayor Royce using city workers to sabotage his political opponent is absolutely corrupt and illegal. There is most likely a state law and city ordinance that prohibits the use of a public office or public resources for personal/political gains. It could also lead to an election law violation for failure to report an in-kind contribution.

james repka

In the US the Hatch Act makes it illegal to make use of government resources for political campaigns. Video of city workers removing signs only supporting your opponent would be a clear violation, plus a huge local scandal. The van wasn't towed because it had been parked too long -- When the work crews showed up to dig up the sidewalk w/o warning they would have put up No Parking signs, then brought in traffic enforcement to remove vehicles parked on that side of the street.

Dk

Or you could just let them watch the rest of the season...

james repka

An interesting aside about Lt. Marimow, who destroyed the Major Crimes Unit. Simon named him after William Marimow, a former editor of the Baltimore Sun (Simon's former paper). Marimow and fellow editor John Carroll ran the Sun at a time when large corporations were buying local papers around the country and squeezing them for profits by cutting back on reporting staff and depending more on wire services for content. Simon was angry at Marimow and Carroll for going along with these cuts, which he feels ultimately became responsible for killing local reporting around the country.

Chris

It's just too complicated and serious for some people. Don't worry about it.

Chris

If you can get past Kevin Spacey being the main star, Boris McGyver plays a decent person, a newspaper editor, in House of Cards on Netflix which , imo, is one of the great series until the last one which was rubbish for obvious reasons.

Shonnicus

First, sorry if I'm taking anyone's thunder away who might have posted in season 3. The Deacon, who goes around giving wisdom to Bunny and Dennis, aka Cutty is played by Melvin Williams. He was the inspiration and the real life drug kingpin of Baltimore that David Simon based The Wire.

The Film Effect

I wish you had the whole season uploaded, so I could just binge it. I love watching this season with you two.

Chris

And Ed Burns was one of the cops who caught him. David Simon wrote a few feature articles on him for the Baltimore Sun in the late 80s as well.

Pajander

You're not "sheltered" if your school didn't have metal detectors, you just happen to live in a normal country and not a dystopian failed state.

Hexon66

Still doesn't mean she wasn't sheltered. And she called a 13 year old Black child a "woman". She means no harm in it, but it's not an insignificant insight into relative privilege.

Roddy Hutchinson

Re-watching with you is so enjoyable. Mayor then governor O'Malley was definitely corrupt. But to be fair so is every politician in Baltimore. One of the most corrupt cities in the country. Detective Norris was Police Commissioner, was set up because they didn't like him, wasn't from Baltimore and didn't play their game.
