I've seen this one. I've been playing D&D off and on for over four decades. I think that previous attempts at movies based on this IP being so horrible is why this one got a bit over-hyped. It's still enjoyable but I'd give it a 6 out of 10. As a long time Dwarf player I'm fighting removing a point because the only Dwarf that appears (unless I missed on in the background somewhere) in this one is there for like 10 seconds. For Simone, the two coolest creatures are the Owlbear (which they name) and the Displacer Beasts were the panther like things in the maze towards the end. The thing they all jump into in the maze was a Gelatinous Cube.

Patrick Jackson

YES! This movie is far and away my favorite movie of 2023 so far. I haven't had that much fun in years at the theater. F for the poor ancient couple sitting in front of me who had to deal with me laughing myself to tears the whole movie lol. (PS it's fine, I talked to the wife afterwords and apologized for being so loud and she was like "Oh no, sweetie, don't worry about it. It was a very fun movie." They were like 85 and they had a blast. It was cute lol)

Martin

I really had a strong feeling you guys were going to slot this in very soon once it became available to stream. I really enjoyed this movie. Had a very “Guardians of the Galaxy” mix of action and humor that I love. I also think it did a great job of being true to the tabletop D & D experience, particularly with the way the party has to improvise when the various plans go to shit. Anyone who has played D & D will recognize the “Oh shit, I just critically failed my attack roll, where the hell did my sword go?” moments that are scattered throughout this movie.

zak

I can't believe Simone held off from watching it in the cinema, so glad she did though, as a big D&D nerd it put a smile on my face seeing her reaction!

Stephanie Bedworth

I literally squealed when this popped up. I'm not kidding. I scared the cats.

Jay Davis

D&D movie? Diablo IV? Guess it's gonna be a looong (goood) day.

silverarrow06

I saw it just now and you made me so happy! 😍🙌 Never played D&D, but I love this movie so much! 😊

Martin

Haha, you and I have the same plans for the day. I’m on vacation next week specifically so I can play D4.

Chris Davies

For more D&D fun, I recommend watching the Gamers: Dorkness Rising movie

Jayson Phillips

The artifacts (Horn, Tablet, staff were just made for the movie)

Spacedone

Given your surprise about Hugh Grant's character in this I take it you've not seen The Gentlemen? He plays a sleazy tabloid journalist in it and it's glorious.

Viktor M

That movie is great, i was two times in the cinema it is like a real D&D season and plan to build in a fat monster into one of my D&D seasons as well^^ You realy can see then someone has roll a 1 (critical fail) and the classes all behave lifelike (The stong but borring paladin and so on). Just great :)

Endling_king

Each time I watch this movie it gets better and better! I hope they make a 2nd.

Persnickity

A movie I recommend is knights od badassdom. Funny LARPing movie that has a great cast. Peter dinklidge is a name you'd know

Monica Alarcon

I just saw it a couple of weeks ago, and now you want me to watch it again??? Well alrighty!! Thank you. I'll get the popcorn ready. Such a fun movie.

Spacedone

He was a Harper, who is the Forgotten Realms universe in which this is set are an semi-secret spy organisation that exists to preserve peace and defend the innocent against evil. They can be any class as far as I can remember. I read a ton of Forgotten Realms books as a kid and played a lot of the early computer games.

Robert Haynes

So, I think the whole "can't be revived by a red wizard's blade" is a call back to necromancy stuff from 2nd edition (the THAC0 edition). I have the old necromancer character book, and it goes to great lengths to explain why necromancy is so reviled, and a lot of it is about the spells destroying the spirit. A fireball will kill you sure, but finger of death will kill your soul and prevent anyone from reviving you. I'm not super up on the forgotten realms lore though, so there might be a red wizard specific thing as well.

Jack Burton

People who watch this movie and pick it apart for breaking any D&D Rules as Written are just not getting the point. Homebrew... boom, done and answered. If you're allowed to change rules at your table then writers would be allowed to change rules in a movie. Any argument about it not being faithful is trite and pointless, imo. This is the best D&D movie ever made. Period. There is no question. Chris Pine should reprise his role as well as this party. That's how it works. Adding a Cleric and a Rogue would be good... and working with another party who is composed of the other classes would still work and give you tastes of each class. I don't think that you have to leave this party out of any further movies to get the idea of other classes.

W T

Nice Freaks and Geeks drop, good stuff

Naturekitty5309

Who else recognized the characters from the 80s DND cartoon?

Lars G

This movie was a ton of fun. I looked up what the directors had done besides this, which is how I found Game Night, which I'm bummed it took me this long to watch. Game Night is absolutely a movie you guys should watch at some point.

sarCC

You haven't seen Hugh Grant in anything?! [starts chant] PADDINGTON 2! PADDINGTON 2!

Jayson Phillips

They soooo need a big plushi of that dragon!!!

Chase Schleich

I've never seen a Paddington movie, but I'm assuming they should start with Paddington 1 first before Paddington 2? lol

Peter McCoy

How are they watching it? Google says its on Paramount+ but I've subscribed to it via Prime Video and its not available

sarCC

I have the paramount+ app and even there I had to use the "search" function to find it.

Michael Robayo

First time watching this one, and this movie was amazing!

Jayson Phillips

In the game the owlbear was off limits because he is technically a monster, the Speak with dead spell was actually a cleric talisman not like a spell, scroll so it can be cast over and over, I was shocked that the Bard had no magic either the Bard was my main class when I play. WIsh spell can raise any dead and pretty much do anything just have to word it perfectly,

Liam Harrold

any chance since it was mentioned for a vox machina reaction? just curious i know it'll be only 1 sided but to see the amazement would still be worth it :D

Naturekitty5309

Who has next movie casting ideas. Russell Crowe as a cleric. Idris Elba knight paladin.

Persnickity

I love this movie for so many reasons. But I love it is an ode to bard. The whole movie he is either inspiring his team or hitting villains with a lute. Edgin talked his way to freedom if Jarnathon didn't show. #blamejarnathon

Hawke

Other things can keep you from being resurrected as well, anything that traps the soul really. Some spells and magic items can do that like Soul Jar.

Hawke

I personally think Edwin is a Mastermind Rogue, not a bard. He just has musical proficiency and a lute. A couple of things that seem houseruled: Seems like Dorick traded her spellcasting for additional uses of Wild Shape. Additionally she can shapeshift into an owlbear(monstrosity) instead of just a normal bear(beast), but that's probably because it's just cool. Mechanically they are similar and I'd totally let my player do it if they wanted. Speak with dead has a duration of ten minutes. While the "Cleric's token" could have done speak with dead, it's more likely a specific magic effect that operates similar to speak with dead. Intellect devourers recognize anything with an IQ of 5 or higher as a viable target. If there was a DM, they probably houseruled it for comedic effect since, as you pointed out, many of the player's classes would have intelligence as a dump stat.

Hawke

Oh, and Time Stop is a 9th level spell, the highest level available, meaning Sophina was a REALLY high level Wizard (Minimum level 17 out of a max of 20).

DM DC

Me! I caught a glimps of Eric's (the Cavalier) outfit when they first popped up, but it wasn't until the barbarian (Bobby) picked up the axe from the chest I knew what I saw was real. And then of course seeing Sheila (Rogue) and Presto helped confirm that too. I am sooooo happy for that nod to the old 80s animated show!

DM DC

So I really enjoyed this movie. It is by far the best D&D movie made. I loved the little nod to the old 80s cartoon with that group that was in the cage of the arena. That was so great. I loved the fat dragon (which I am likely wrong-but I took it to be a nod to Fat Dragon Games). While I am not a fan of 5th Edition, there was still a good amount I could take from 3rd edition. Overall I liked this a lot. It was also much deeper in emotion than I really anticipated. Great cast and a fun bunch of characters. I don't think Chris Pine was a bard, but a thief. One thing about D&D is you can be a wide varity of things, including a lute playing Rogue. It would also explain why he didn't have any spell casting ability-at least that I could tell.

Thomas Wendel

Before there was Critical Role (or even the internet), there were D&D novels. Most are crap but some are awesome. Sazz Tam is one of the uber villains of those novels. Yes, he is a lich and ruler of Thay. His main goal is to become the sole god (there are dozens of gods in D&D). In perceptive, his attack on his own people and Neverwinder in the movie are just one of many plans to ultimately achieve godhood. This goal will take millennia so people playing the game (or the heroes in the novels) are just trying to stop one of his many plans to achieve his main goal. In the end, he is the Thanos/Star wars Emperor/Sauron all rolled up into one. Incredible villain. The point is, D&D oldies like me, seeing Sazz Tam was a huge deal! Based on your reaction, the creepiness of him was done well.

Thomas Wendel

Time stop is a level 9 spell in the game. That is endgame level power. The movie clearly was not following the rules perfectly in favor of the story. Same with the use of Bigby's hand and the wild shape power. The movie was never about following the rules perfectly, The spells and monsters were just easter eggs and great fun. The movie, I think, was about replicating the feel of the game. The banter, the plans that never work, the over the top role playing, and, ultimately, fight after fight. Great movie and I loved your reaction. Thank you for all you guys do!

Com1xguy

Themberchaud is an actual dragon in the Forgotten Realms setting. He was used by Gray dwarves to heat their forges. They fed him prisoners and slaves and gave him tons of treasure to stay around the city. :D

YoureMrLebowski

anyone remember the movie with Tom Hanks about d&d?

Hawke

The fat dragon, named Themberchaud, is actually from Dungeons & Dragons lore. A funny story is that the directors kept pushing the envelope for how rotund to make him and Hasbro pushed back. The directors were adamant that having him be larger than life would only add to his appeal. So instead of a husky dragon we got a seriously chonky dragon. Seeing how giddy it made Simone, it looks like the directors knew what they were talking about. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Themberchaud

redddfer44

Ha, I have a completely opposite view on Chris Pine: this is the first time I liked him in anything. (There are some acclaimed roles that I haven't checked out yet.) A reasonably watchable movie for me and it felt like an RPG adventure at best, but I just didn't dig the bad guys at all. Hugh Grant didn't really amuse me and the witch felt something I've seen a million times before. I'm glad you two enjoyed it a lot, though!

PIG

I’ve played D&D for over thirty years and love it. I am not watching this movie. Lol

James O'Sullivan

I agree on Edgin being a rogue. Though there are a couple of times he could be said to use Bardic Inspiration. But I reckon he gets a couple of power sneak attacks in during the film.

James O'Sullivan

Loved this film in the cinema. Can't wait to watch this reaction, but it isn't out on streaming yet in the UK :(

Grand Moff Slackin'

I love the Easter egg of having the other Sun Games arena team be the kids from the 80’s D&D cartoon. As an 80’s kid that tickled my fancy.

Michael Bourke

I hadn't been to the cinema since the pandemic started but ventured out to see this one and loved it. So glad you're doing it. It's a really fun movie. Close enough to the game for us D&D nerds but changing what they needed to work cinematically and work for non-D&D folk.

Gryff

Your loss, Grognak. Literally no one else cares that you don't want to have fun.

Matt Gwinn

I ran a 13th Age campaign once that had a fat red dragon with low self esteem. Probably the most memorable part of the campaign, The players found it hilarious.

Michael Bourke

The characters all have NPC stat blocks, so not things you can make yourself as a player in a D&D game. But I can see why they went that way. Still, as someone who loves playing bards, one of my few disappointments from the film was that Edgin ( Chris Pine ) didn't cast any spells, felt more like a rogue who sings.

Gary Fixler

Whoa, didn't even notice, and grew up on that show. Now I have to go back and check...

Gary Fixler

There are some other fat dragons out there, like Grump: https://howtotrainyourdragon.fandom.com/wiki/Grump and Mim in dragon form: https://dragons.fandom.com/wiki/Madam_Mim_(Disney_) I think Simone needs this: https://www.hallmark.com/ornaments/keepsake-ornaments/dungeons-and-dragons-honor-among-thieves-themberchaud-ornament-with-light-2499QXI7547.html or maybe this: https://www.kidrobot.com/products/dungeons-dragons-honor-among-thieves-themberchaud-plush?variant=40599342841953

Hyperdryve

This is one of those I’m going to have to avoid until I see the movie 😂 I hope it’s good!

Persnickity

Reee rawww, in the valley of binge. I hope for more content. (Possibly cringe). Yall two delightful as sin, I hope you keep at with genuine grins. Reeee raw in the valley of binge

Noe Ramirez

That was so much fun! I loved the practical costumes they had in this. So cool. Kinda wish I saw it in the theater!

akaTheBARON

🖤Wow! Such a great cameo (the ex husband) LOLLL. This was definitely what fans wanted the previous DnD movie or the WoW movie to be and they easily could have been. I'm circling back to playing DnD in the coming weeks and will for sure be giving this movie more viewings in the future. Glad Simone finally got to watch this, I know it was KILLING her when it was in theaters. #MiniCooper

Jared Winn

WE PLAY DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS!!!!!

punterjoe

Have you guys seen the Community episode "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons"? I heard that it's been pulled from streaming because of some controversy, but if you can get your hands on the Season-2 DVD...... They basically use a game of D&D as a suicide intervention. It's intense - and brilliant. And naturally hilarious in Community's squirm-worthy way.

MadCat

I would wholeheartedly recommend the "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale". Directed by the infamous Uwe Boll, this movie is absolutely hilarious. Not because it aims to be funny, and not because it is good. Uwe Boll is famous for making bad movies with fairly big budgets, and the Dungeon Siege movie is a prime example. I had a couple of beers with my friend, and we genuinely could not stop laughing for the entire duration of the movie. Please check out the movie at your convenience, I promise you will have... a good... you will... get... uh, an experience? Yeah, you will have watched "a movie" all right.

Logan Kerlee

Had such an amazing time rewatching this with you both! lmao, love how enthusiastic and passionate Simone is with Dungeons and Dragons! Watching this with you both was such an experience. I hopped immediately to this after watching the YouTube post again. This is now my favorite reaction to anything! xD Ya'll rock, plain and simple. :)

ExtraBigAssTaco

Themberchaud comes from Forgotten Realms lore, not just the writer's room. It was a pretty entertaining choice.

Odd Thomas

I'd heard good things about this but I wasn't ready to love it so much. I watched the D&D cartoon in the 80s but otherwise avoided the movies because they looked so cheesy. This worked on so many levels. It was funny, well written and had characters you actually cared about (when one gets wounded at the end my heart genuinely sank). Instant classic.

Odd Thomas

For more Michelle Rodriguez I recommend the Resident Evil franchise

Odd Thomas

For more Chris Pine I recommend the Star Trek and Wonder Woman franchises

sagesaria

IIRC the party is pretty high level, so Doric does have a lot of wild shapes available, but according to the official sheet the big chase sequence goes over even that number. I forgive it because that feels like a Hand of the DM moment; the chase was so intense that everyone just lost count of wild shapes and didn't want to stop to check. Also, Rules as Written, owlbears are considered monstrosities, so they don't qualify for wild shape, which is exclusively beasts. The initial movie trailers got a LOT of flack for that, and for the fact that Doric didn't have an unusual skin tone - even though the book explicitly says that tieflings CAN have normal human skin tones. And obviously, screw the rules, being an owlbear is awesome :D Also fun fact: Daisy Head - the actress who played Sofina - is the daughter of Anthony Stewart Head. AKA Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Since I know Simone loves Buffy I thought that was worth a mention :)
