Jay

Oh Herc, you fucking moron!

Jeff K

Since there are three episodes left, will all three be next week?

Jay Davis

Say what you will, Herc never secretly unbuttoned his pants on TV!

Persnickity

I personally am indifferent if y'all ate quietly on camera. My problem is I want to know what your eating or I sit there guessing

JediLounger

Simone has the right of it, D.S.S. is Department of Social Services. They issue welfare debit cards rather than giving the money to people so they can monitor the purchases and ensure only legitimate items are bought, but they don't have enough people to monitor all of the cards. I would be shocked if they have the manpower to audit 10% of the cards. Edit: Last of the Mohicans (1992) is a movie, but it is based on a book written by James Fenimore Cooper, and published in 1826. It was one book in a series that have been adapted several times, but that movie is the most famous adaptation. The students were reading the book I would guess.

Jeff K

I’m only good with them eating on camera if, while they do it, they make unblinking, emotionless eye contact with the camera and remain absolutely silent with every bite.

Brydney

I don’t mind the eating on camera. It’s kind of crazy to expect someone to not eat at all if they’re hungry in the comfort of their home just to appease yourself. Sitting there for 2 hours while hungry must drive u crazy.

Unlike others I have a complaint about George's pizza. One time I broke into his house and while looking under the couch found some uneaten pizza. It had no bacon on it, George. This is unacceptable.

John Richards

as an FYI: Omar was eating a crab cake in the back of the taxi.

lolenseu

just noticed on rewatch bunk mentioning his kid being still in a "pediatric neurosurgeon stage"- same career the young kid in bunny's class mentions when asked where he sees himself in 10 years

Spacedone

George said "loitering" but I heard "Lord of the Ring". I was very confused for a while there...

James Boyd

McNulty wasn't working on a case as a detective but doing street work figuring out who'd committed a string of church burglaries. He was letting the other cop know that you don't actually have to waste your shift doing petty things even if the bosses tell you, you can still focus on things that actually matter.

James Boyd

I always liked his character for the exact opposite reason I like Prez...Herc has no arc.

Einherj

I'm fine with you eating if there are no distracting sounds from it.

Tenn Seven

Kima paraphrased an old lawyer joke "I passed the bar the first time out of law school, and I haven't passed a bar since."

Śéáń

The opening banter is never skipped

Jeff K

Also: these two episodes always make me want to go to Ruth’s Chris. I’ve only been to one once (what’s up, Pittsburgh!), but my god, I’ve never had a steak that good before or since.

Carla Davis

Some people have a real problem hearing eating noise, like to the point of nausea. I've seen some reactors who can't deal with it. It's one of those things that really disguise some people. Hey we all have something, I guess?

Carla Davis

Eddie Haskell was the best friend of Wally on this really old sitcom called Leave It To Beaver. It came on before I was born but I use to watch it when I was little because they show reruns for ages!! It's in black and white too. Lol! Eddie Haskell was a trouble maker but he always put on a front in front of Wallys parents, kind of how Naymond was doing.

The thing about people like Namond's mother and Officer Walker is they've totally capitulated to the system. They are willing to play a part that's been created for them because their desire of life is facile. Whereas those that are working "schemes" or "plans" are pushing back against the fact that the system doesn't work for them in some way. Whether their view of what is not working is informed and correct or their way of acting out is right or wrong is separate from an underlying absence they perceive and acknowledge by taking action. That the action may go against societal norms or be not productive is a byproduct of their surroundings and opportunities. This is the point of the class Colvin is conducting. To try and introduce a world beyond what they know in hopes they'll realize, on some level, that other options exist. And not accept a fate via a roll created for them that they're expected to fill.

- Last of the Mohicans is a 19th century novel that is frequently required reading in American schools. It doesn't seem likely it would be on a standardized test, though, since they can't expect everyone to have read it beforehand. Questions to do with reading in those tests usually *give* you a passage to read before you answer questions. - Gah, Irreversible! A really good movie that I never want to see again. - I don't mind you guys eating on camera; I don't get the complaints unless there are grody chewing noises, which you seem to be trying to avoid anyway.

Boyan Konov

One of the biggest influences of the show is greek mythology. Where often its common men vs Gods beyond their comprehension. David Simon think the modern Gods are the systems portrayed in the show - police, drug trade, school, politics and media. Those are the enemies against the characters and they always will be and will never be defeated. Thats the main thesis of the show in order for any change to happen one must first defeat the impossible.

Jeff K

And, of course... this is Baltimore, gentlemen. The gods will not save you.

Jeff K

Last of the Mohicans (the Michael Mann/Daniel Day-Lewis version) is absolutely worth a watch for George and Simone. Great movie, and one of the best musical scores in cinema history.

KnittingHaven

Omar actually started his war with Stringer and Avon just like he did with Marlo, he robbed them first, the stash where D'Angelo and the boys were working. They went after Omar and his boys because of that. Also, just want to add my vote for you watching all 3 of the last episodes together :).

JayF

Something I don't know if anyone pointed out to G&S is the "I speak Jive" old lady in Airplane was the mom from Leave it to Beaver. What made the bit so funny is that show is one of the "whitest" shows in TV history.

JayF

The movie is amazing. They would both love it I'm sure.

As for characters who do the most damage Herc should be on that list. In that single scene where Herc is attempting to interrogate Little Kevin he inadvertently messes up (at least) four people’s life’s because he is bad at his job. Randy gets revealed as a snitch, Little Kevin gets killed, he screws over Bubbles making his situation worse, and because of that Bubs sabotages Herc (who is already on thin ice). And more people could probably be added to the list just because of that one scene. Herc is my least favorite main character on the show (Namond’s mom is up there but she is a supporting character) and season 4 (specifically that scene) is the main reason why! He is a idiot who always seems to fail upwards and hurts everyone around him. He drives me mad. Carver and Prez were in the same boat in the first season but they grew into really fascinating characters (especially Mr. Prezbo).

Young Blood Priest

Herc is the worst. Lives were affected because he didn’t want to take responsibility for a fucking camera.

Logan Kerlee

Hey everybody, what's up? I'm wondering if The Wire is a show that I should jump into or not. I've never watched an episode and I'm wanting to know if it's a solid series that'll get me hooked on it. Lemme know! :)

Jay

Well I think it's the greatest TV show ever made...... by a distance, but that's just me. And I probably haven't seen 99.99999% of TV shows ever made:)

Jay

How infuriating is that superintendent lady at the school? It's people like her, propping up an obviously failed system that ensure the bullshit will continue.

YoureMrLebowski

has the next tv series reaction been determined?

james repka

I can't believe that Rawls had to see it made explicit that he was never going to be head of the department, especially by a white mayor. One thing I never thought of him was that he was clueless.

dys

Simone pretty much got it but DSS = Department of Social Services, it's a welfare card.

Jay

Fun fact - Tristan Wilds (Michael) and Jermaine Crawford (Dukie) got on really well on set, after a while they realized they were actually second cousins. They had never met before the show. Small world:)

Gary Fixler

So the school testing thing is a ripped-from-the-headlines bit about NCLB, the No Child Left Behind Act, which was passed by Congress in 2001 (GW Bush announced it 3 days after taking office), and went into effect at the start of 2002, right as this season was probably being filmed. It enforced identification of failing schools through relentless standardized testing (which cost a lot, and wasn't subsidized, and put a burden on underfunded schools). It required deep reporting, broken down by race. Then the government prescribed fixes to lift the schools up, which, IIRC, didn't work. It was in effect for 13 years, and was a real hot button issue, especially in the early years, because it lead to teachers only teaching not just what would be on the many tests, but literally teaching exact answers to exact questions, which kids were just memorizing for the sake of passing. I remember a lot of news coverage for a long time, and a lot of angry parents, a lot of teachers who hated it, blame going in all directions - the whole thing was a bit of a mess.

Ian Beausejour

I became a patron of you guys for my first watchthrough of this show and this season is by far the most heartbreaking season I've ever seen.

Hexon66

Yet another reference to "The Wild Bunch" from Bodie @0:48

Hexon66

He conveniently omitted the part about ranting to the cop about being "chaotic evil".

Pierce

yes you missed something about the church burglaries.. you were talking over them bring them up during roll call

Timothy Cole

If you are a fan of Michael Kenneth Williams who plays Omar, you have to check out his finest performance ,which for me is even better than Omar, as Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire.

Schnabley

Both Her.C and Carver passed the written exam, in the US most promotional exams are pass/fail and an Oral Board is how they get ranked by number. 35 in a department the size of Baltimore is pretty good. Here is a total dufus though, I’ve know many like him that achieve rank.

JoeE

Irreversible was really moving movie but I wouldn’t recommend to most women
