The Wire: Season 4 - Episode 11 & 13 - Patreon Version

Comments

Paul Mcmenzie

Awesome, also if you’re getting into anime. I’d recommend Berserk.

Jeff K

Stooooooooked that you guys decided to do a three episode capper for the season. Especially given how episode 12 ends, you HAD to move right into 13.

Śéáń

One paaaunch! Great choice.

JediLounger

Glad you guys are going to take a break and then come back around to The Wire. At some point you should also watch We Own This City (2022), another HBO show from David Simon. Simon was the principal producer and show runner for The Wire, and We Own This City serves sorta as an addendum to The Wire. It is not officially related in any way, but it covers a lot of the same subject matter in Baltimore, takes place during the time frame when The Wire was on the air(and beyond), and is a true story. Plus it’s only six episodes so you guys could do it real quick.

Astraeos

One Punch Man is an EXCELLENT choice. Also, I really hope you didn't skip an episode and that's just a title typo

Jay

If ever there was a time to break the 2 episodes a week tradition, it's this week. Even by The Wire's consistently sky high standards, these last 3 episodes are seriously good TV. Can't wait to watch along later. I've never even heard of One Punch Man:)

James Boyd

Turkey grease is consumed by winos to induce vomiting to make room for more liquor. Naymond laughs at Dukie for ordering it because he knows what it's for. Dukie only ordered it because he's seen his mother do the same (she's an alcoholic) though he never realized her reason. After Michael explained it to him he realized why Naymond laughed and called him an at risk youth and got emberassed.

dom

one punch man in sub or dub?

Astraeos

Also, luckily the whole subs vs dubs thing won't matter for us with this reaction because it's Patreon exclusive and won't be on YT, however. I would truly, truly recommend you watch this specific anime with Japanese voice, and English subtitles, AKA, subs. I just don't feel the English VA's even come close to capturing the spirit of the show. Both the main protagonists sound like Ash from Pokemon, and its just super, super distracting. Watch it in Japanese for a much better viewing experience. Us the viewers, luckily, can watch it however we want and it won't affect the watch a long.

Matthew Richson

I was not expecting anime in this place, yet alone One Punch Man.

Cinebinge

we will be watching it subtitled version. however as Astraeos pointed out, since tv shows will only have the patreon version and that patrons can watch along with whatever version they feel like, the version we watch wont have any affects on the video.

Haye Zeus

The end of the first episode just proves that Simone is as good a detective as Lester.

Worst Teacher: 5th grade, math. She damaged my ability to do math for years, and I was terrified of it until well into college, though other teachers helped ease the fear. How do you ask a kid of that age to do long division with digits going out to six to ten places? This was in the early 90s. Best Teacher(s): my 6th and 8th grade math teacher was the same person. He was an Elvis impersonator for several years, had the physicality and everything for it. Jaw line, the hair and everything. He was tall and built as well. He would sing for us at the end of every six weeks(3 six week terms per semester). He was one of the reasons that the damage from the 5th grade teacher was not irreparable. Considering I am now nearing the completion of my masters in Accounting, I was able to figure it out. My 4th grade math teacher taught me how to break numbers apart and put them back together so you can find the answer. So instead of adding 63 and 57, you add 60, 50, 3 and 7. My AP U.S. History teacher in 11th grade taught students how to write essays. Every Thursday we would do an essay on the material from the week. AP essays are graded on a scale from 1-9. At the start of the year I was doing 2s and 3s level of quality, but at the end I was landing 7s and 8s. I never took the AP test, but when I started college boy was I happy that I could write with a comprehensive and persuasive voice.

PIG

I always assumed Chris had some military training. There was an episode of Gangland (History Channel) that showed a police gun fight with a gang member who used detailed combat tactics as he cornered off with them. Turned out that white supremacists, Bloods, Crips, and MS-13s were sending young gang members into the military to train and bring those fighting skills back to them to train other gang members. Chris works and acts that way. He's even smart enough to always look unassuming and is far from flashy. Snoop, who was already deadly, just bounces her own abilities off of Cris's unique training. That's what my imagination says anyway. (I wrote all this on another reactor's forum.... so I just copy/pasted it here because I'm so proud of my conclusions lol)

Jeff K

I've never thought about that, but that makes total sense. Chris is cold and emotionless and a pure professional when it comes to taking lives, and he obviously understands how things work from a tactical standpoint. It would make total sense if he was a dude who came back from the service, though I wonder how that would have worked in terms of getting where he is in Marlo's crew with that many years away (though I also assume he and Marlo grew up together).

Jeff K

Toward the start of episode 12 when George notes that Herc is actively damaging... yep. He absolutely ruined three lives with his ineptitude: by not helping out Bubbles, he was indirectly responsible for Sharod dying. And obviously, his bullshit is why Randy saw his life fall apart and his foster mom was so horribly injured.

Boyan Konov

There was an old forum post I wish I could find but it was somebody from the writer's room breaking down the subversion of archetypes in the 4 kids. Dukie got dealt the worst hand he's kind and smart and he doesn't make it out. Randy is a hustler he's trying to grind it out get money, be resourceful and clever and he too doesn't get out. Mike is strong and brave he has a code and sticks go it while taking care of his brother he too can't get out. In any other story these characters are set up to make it but in reality only namond does. Namod does because he's rich and connected he's maybe the least deserving but he makes it because he was bound to from the jump. The other 3 never could in the world of the wire.

Jeff K

I work at a high academic college (like, 1200+ SAT for admission), and it is ASTOUNDING how bad these students are at writing, regarding that last point about being taught how to write essays. Learning how to write even passably is becoming a lost art. I don't know how many "bad" teachers I've had, but I think the best was one I had in college. Took a bunch of his history courses because he was just a fantastic storyteller, which is big. Makes an hour+ lecture utterly fascinating. (In case any other Syracuse alums are patrons, the professor I'm talking about is David Bennett.)

SbE

After watching the intro, there's something I'm not quite clear on: Will you guys come back to season 5 of the Wire at any point? ...sorry....

GDC

"Marlo, big gangster, killing a lot of people, but it just feels like the bigger villain, the bigger bad, the bigger evil is a failing system." And that summarizes the television show called The Wire and what it's about. You got it.

Jeff K

Yep. Baltimore is the main character of the entire series, and the system is the villain. Obviously, this is not a spoiler because through four seasons... that's pretty clear, I think, and it doesn't spoil anything for season five.

UNC

Wait we actually got 3 episodes!?!?! Y’all the best thank you!

Ken Quick

I had forgotten Duquan's voice changed over the course of this season. That is either prescient or lucky casting. This was a McNulty-light season because Malcolm West asked for a reduced role to spend time with his family after being a major focus for the previous 3 seasons.

Stu84

One of my favourite little call backs of the whole show is when Bodie talks about feeling like a pawn on a chess board. Flashback to the first episode when D'angelo tries to teach Bodie and Wallace how to play Chess by using Avon (king) and stringer (Queen) as examples. Bodies final episode and he, at last, realizes what D'angelo was trying to tell him, that he was only ever going to be a pawn.

Stu84

The makers wanted to do a Season 6, focused on immigrants but it never happened. Whilst you can say it "jumps the shark" a little, Season 5 is good and does wrap up the threads to provide an ending. I do recommend "Generation Kill" as a short show to watch. It's by the same writer and has very similar themes to The Wire but is focused on a small group of soldiers invading Iraq in 2003. Plus its all based on a true story.

Spacedone

"...it just feels like the bigger bad is a failing system." And that's The Wire in a nutshell and why everyone thinks it's a masterpiece of TV. David Simon and Ed Burns weren't interested in just creating another police drama, they wanted to tell the story of an American city and how, as Freeman said, all the pieces matter.

Jeff K

That’s quite possibly one of the best compliments you could ever give someone.

Blacky

While Namond and Michael have interesting character arc, it's even better than that because if you re-watch the season, you'll see all the elements already there in each of them: - Namond is a loud mouth, speaking loudly to hide his lack of corner heart and his physical cowardice. It's just a regular boy who was pushed to play gansta, without the heart or the balls or the experience to ever do it. And that's pretty apparent from the beginning, he's always talking loud, but never acting, and always spinning and lying afterward. - while Michael always had a strong motivation in his little brother, learned the distrust, and was the more quiet, silenced, thoughtful, but also the one who cut through the bullshit and actually do what needs to be done. So it's not like those characters really change through the season. Time and events just let who they really are appear on the surface.

Jay Davis

All I heard was they're never doing The Wire Season 5!

GDC

Season 4 is the best season of television ever. An even more amazing feat considering they were following up a strong Season 3 where they killed/wrote off almost all of their main characters.

Jon

.... your reactions when they found Bubbs hanging is fuckin' powerful, and kinda cute !

GDC

As far as I can remember, all three shorts were released prior to Season 5. They're backstory which establishes who each character is so they're not really spoilery for the season.

GDC

Can't forget the role Crutchfield played with Randy as well. He threw away the message for Bunk because he was mad Bunk was working on proving Omar's innocence.

Spacedone

This season is both brilliant and brutal, I knew that Bubbles story would be a rough one for you and Andre Royo should have got all the awards for his performance. And then you have the kids and their journeys and the way they interweave the realities of the system and society they live in and how it affects their lives and their future. Brilliant TV. This is why Season 4 is considered the best season of the show.

Spacedone

Also has the actor who played Ziggy in S2 in a slightly less annoying character role. Slightly... Oh and Alexander Skarsgård.

Spacedone

If you're looking for something a little less serious but still great and fun after The Wire is over how about watching Banshee or Spartacus: Blood & Sand?

Jay

G & S, some more Wire content you can watch if you're interested. A 25 minute BBC thing presented by Charlie Brooker. Some of the talking heads might be unfamiliar on that side of the Atlantic but David Simon, Dominick West, Clarke Peters etc. are in it. It was released between seasons 4 and 5 so no spoilers for the last season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLcquuO7sxg&pp=ygUQdGFwcGluZyB0aGUgd2lyZQ%3D%3D

Happy Hanukkah

"then we will be returning to the final season of The Wire" Ah, delayed gratification. Builds character! :-)

Travis H

Can’t wait to watch these final episodes later tonight. Completely fine with you two taking a break from The Wire (even though I’m not interested in anime), you did seasons 3/4 back to back and I greatly appreciate that! As I posted previously I would LOVE to watch a comedy with you two, and I would highly recommend Good Place or Ted Lasso.

Stan the Man

Don’t listen to the people who talk shit about Season 5. Go into with a clear head. It’s just as good as the other seasons, has some of the best moments of the series.

PIG

Best Teacher: Mrs. Garcia, High school English, 90's, Miami FL. I don't know. She was wry, witty, intellectually sharp, and held court over class like nothing. I don't think she really favored me, I was going through some things at the time (as teens do) but I didn't care. She had such a great voice and character, she made you think about Lord of the Flies or Hamlet and went into detail of her own thoughts. She's one of the reasons I became teacher today. Worst Teacher: I think I lucked out here. Sure, I've had some teachers worse than others, but no one really hurt me or made feel terrible about myself. I had more beef with other students but, even then, it was never that bad. Again, I think I lucked out. Note: There are some other, main reasons, of why I became a teacher. Believe it or not, one of them was Season 4 of The Wire. Something about how hard and valuable the job is made it more important to me. So... yeah. The Wire helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life to make things just a little better.

Joe Williams

Best teacher was my English teacher, Mr Gilius. He was a former miner who retrained when the industry started falling apart in Scotland. He had a hair trigger temper and typed extremely slowly with one finger. Nobody made literature come alive like him though. Changed my life.

micah

hopefully yall get to andor after the wire! :D

Jay

My biggest issue with season 5 is that it's only 10 episodes:) And that jumping the shark plotline that people generally talk about, I find myself getting more on board with it each viewing.

Pam Nail

Agreed on Officer Walker because he literally serves no purpose other than to impede the other characters. He doesn't lead anyone to anything. But as for more major characters, Herc is definitely my least favorite. The only good thing he has done was at the end of the season, when he threw himself on the sword regarding the camera and the paperwork. Especially as he insists he acted alone so no one else gets into trouble. It's a surprising moment of accountability for him. Favorites are Daniels, McNulty and Omar, who I think have the most interesting arcs on the show. I really loved that scene in the S4 finale when McNulty and Daniels have basically the same dialogue as when they first met in S1, but the roles are reversed. Yes, The Wire was available in video stores and I'm pretty sure I rented at least the first season from a video store myself.

Robert Cooper

I think the thing about shows like The Wire is they are written by just a couple/handful of people. Aaron Sorkin is basically the only guy that can write an episode of TV in a week and ship it to shooting, and he eventually burns out.

Robert Cooper

Also, re: video stores... TV shows were typically not out for rental, but they sold individual episodes of big shows like The X-Files or Star Trek for like $1 or $2. I have the full run of a couple of shows on VHS I got by just grabbing one every time I went to Blockbuster to rent something in the early 90s. The Wire came out well into the era where a DVD box set would be put out for a reasonable a couple weeks after a season ended ($30/40, as opposed to $99-$150 which they had been before). And HBO stuff was generally available in the Over-the-Cable-TV-Service Video on Demand by the time The Wire was on, though.

Robert Cooper

Season 5 falls off a cliff, though. I just found the whole story line too unbelievable.

Jay

Simone, you've been assigned to major crimes:)

dom

i completely forgot about what happens to bodie and bubs this season smh Andre Royo should be in more shows and movies man

Tall Paul

Just on the VHS talk, The Wire coincided with the era when Netflix used to post you a DVD which you watched and posted back. Also the early days of internet buccaneers, which might have tempted some people when shows like this aired a year earlier in the US than the UK

REDR58

Believe it or not, Netflix is still sending out discs but that will be ending in the US in September 2023.

Irate Spec

Season 5 is the end of the show. It wasn't cancelled and the show has a proper conclusion. Also, take a closer look at the last scene with Bodie. Chris is walking in a straight line, Snoop is zig-zagging between the cars, and the one who shot him takes a few steps forward and then an immediate 90 degree turn. The pawn, the soldier with minimal movement, is cornered by the stronger pieces.

Jay

Simone, you forgot the most significant link in that ring chain. Marlo originally took it from Andre. Then Omar took it from Marlo at the poker game, Walker took it from Omar and Michael took it from Walker. You're busted back to Pawn Shop:)

Fuzzy

Chris and Snoop are some of the most intimidating people ever, the actress who plays Snoop, Felicia Pearson(same name as her character) was convicted of second-degree when she was 14. After getting out, she met the actor who plays Omar randomly, became friends, he invited her onto the set of the show and the producers loved her so wrote her in!

Haye Zeus

I think Walker represents just how much the cops are seen as antagonists to the community. It’s what Daniels and others allude to. You have people like Herc and Discount Rawls as these incompetent shitheads. The top brass playing dirty politics. And the street level bullies like Walker. These folks represent the reason why people in these communities don’t trust or rely on cops. The whole Randy situation proves that. So even though Walker doesn’t push the plot forward necessarily, he represents another flaw in the system.

Blacky

Indeed. Without Walker, The Wire would have gone 4 seasons without showing any of those little dictators, those local bullies on patrol. Which would be weird, and not representative, since they are reasonably common.

Ron Corleone

Favorite Character: Cool Lester Smooth 2nd Favorite Character: Daniels 3rd Favorite Character: Michael Least Favorite Character: Herc 2nd Least Favorite Character: Herc 3rd: Least Favorite Character: Herc I hate Herc more and more each time I rewatch this show. Possibly my least favorite character in TV history. Every time he goes against Marlo, I find myself rooting for Marlo. Season 4 of The Wire is my favorite season of anything. It's as close to perfect as a show can possibly be to me. I'm looking forward to season 5 down the line.

Jay

I can't pick a favourite character, too many to choose from. But one of my favourites only shows up in season 5. Least favourite, I wouldn't say someone hateable like Herc, I think his stupidity makes things interesting. I'd say someone like Sydnor. He's always there, apart from season 2, but rarely does anything of any significance.

Travis

When Simone pointed out the possibility of them figuring it out via the nails I did the Leo DiCaprio meme pointing at the tv 😂 Have fun watching with you guys as always—I’ve made the comment before but between the nail thing and the ‘time between seasons/shooting schedule’ conversation at the end are perfect examples of the clash of Simone being right but not having the confidence in her assertions and George being dead wrong and way overconfident in his logic. It happens so often that if I brought it up every time everyone would hate me lol. Either way Simone be confident! You’re a logical thinking, smart person with solid intuition and powers of observation. George you’re a good guy but build your friend up more 💪🏽

Luis

For those who think The System is the villain of the show...you are Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The villain of the show is not something as nebulous or all-powerful as The System. Rather the villain of the show is the people who exist within those systems perpetuating and maintaining their place within it for their own gain (oftentimes a salary). These systems continue only because of the actors in it who know that it is easier for them to the wrong thing the right way then it is to do the right thing the wrong way. Prez is the best example of this as he fails in two different systems of power. In the police force he exhibits extreme incompetence at several times and in the school system his students score low on standardized tests at the end of the school year. The manner in which he exists and utilizes his strengths and weaknesses in each of these systems is meant to highlight outliers within those specific systems. I'll also mention Bunny Colvin as someone who grew tired of perpetuating his role in the systems he exists in.

Travis H

Your kinda wrong on some of your information. Catching up on the wire or any hbo show before 2010 (when HBO GO launched) was incredibly difficult. Yes the season sets were available for around $30/$40 but that is kinda expensive per season, and the picture quality for a few of the sets were atrocious (season 4 was almost unwatchable). And season dvds weren’t released after they aired at that time, they were released maybe a month or two before the new season premiered. I got into The Wire because I got lucky my Hollywood Video (a blockbuster clone) had the first 3 seasons available to rent but there wasn’t a way to watch season 4 and had to wait a long time for the dvds came out. And the cable On Demand stuff was nice but at that time they only had the most recent seasons of shows currently airing (at least my cable companies did, maybe it was different in other places). (Apologies if I come off as a know it all douche, or it sounds like I just want to argue, that’s not my intention. I just know these type of post come off that way on the internet)

Hiisnoone - DarrenO

I had two worst teachers, but a few real amazing ones later in school. I went to a French school for expats in Burkina Faso. My grades 1 and 2-3 teachers were brutal. Grade 1 teacher used to use a switch to correct any behaviors she didn't like, and the 2-3 teacher i had told me daily that i was a waste of his energy. He would insult my Mom 'cause she didn't know French, and regularly told me i was more stupid than most of his wife's kindergarten kids. Thankfully we moved back to Canada after this. I had some really good ones in high school (Manitoba). I had a physics teacher that researched and brought in papers on the physics of an Ollie. He always looked out for me even though i was a horrible student. I also had a social studies teacher in HS that was way overqualified for teaching at a small town HS. He would go off topic for two days with slides and everything to answer our questions. The most important one to me though was an instructor i had in my last year of trade school. He noticed a disparity between what i could understand and how i performed and got me tested and diagnosed for learning disabilities, hired me as a tutor for the class and even made sure i had a good job to go to. The Presb story arc is a wonderful experience this show gave me.

Jeff K

Favorite character for me: hands down, Cool Lester Smooth. It's not even close.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Well he wasn't my worst teacher or my best, but my high school math teacher for two years is currently on death row for murdering his wife, he also allegedly ate some of her body. The whole story is pretty crazy, you can Google "John Watson murder" for the details, but basically he'd somehow managed to amass a million dollars on a teacher's salary, he suspected his wife (a woman from Guatemala that he married when he was 34 and she was 17 btw) was going to leave him and take half of his money. So he took her to Vegas for her 50th birthday and murdered, dismembered, and for some reason ate some of her, then buried her remains in the desert. There was also supposedly an incident back in the 70s where he was investigated by the Secret Service for threatening Richard Nixon, and another incident (I read this somewhere but can't remember exactly where) in which he admitted to a Texas law enforcement officer that he'd murdered a hitch hiker while driving cross country, but they had no other evidence, apparently dismissed him as a lunie, and let him go. Funny thing is he used to like me as a student, and I remember he used to get made fun of a lot because he looked kind of funny and always wore thrift store clothes at least a decade old, and it was really messed up in retrospect because he always used to talk about and brag about his wife and kids.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Favorite character is still Lester, he's a badass. Don't really have a least favorite character, I mean I want Marlow to "get got", to quote Simone, but I can't think of a character I'd subtract from the show, maybe the one cop that has that high and tight haircut, just because, who the hell chooses that haircut if they're not currently in the military? I hated that haircut when I was in the Army and still do lol plus that guy is kind of a meat headed dildo.

christopher b swanson

for me, this show isn't about the police, or drug dealers, or even the system.................in the end its a show about bubbles............and for a show that is 1 of the best ever, it got 0 award love............for me the actor playing bubbles was robbed over and over................when i 1st watched i assumed he was a junkie playing it out, not an actor

christopher b swanson

Simone "I am so excited for season 5....." and so they will move on to another show and wait weeks............................weird

Brian Harris

Favorite character is Bubbles, followed very closely by Lester. Clarke Peters is one of the best actors working today. It’ll be interesting to see what you guys think of Season 5. You may have noticed in the comments it’s pretty controversial.

Christoph Plank

I feel your reading of the show is actually a prime example of your point. Doing it the easy way by blaming individuals, thinking in terms of heroes and villains, refusing to look beyond ones own little word and putting things in larger societal context

Christoph Plank

Yes, the whole show is solely about Bubbles. Everything that happens is simply in his imagination...in reality, he is nothing but a mute kid with a snowglobe.

christopher b swanson

ok............ that might be about the funniest deep pull comment joke of all time, it seriously made me bust out laughing so hard I woke my dog up......... well-done sir, well done..............I wonder how many would get that reference

8bitAndy

You guys really like The Wire, aye? Guess I should be glad there are only 5 seasons. I hope there's some kind of poll for what comes after because it's been a hot minute since these exclusives have landed with me.

Tall Paul

so if we are sharing memorable teacher stories... I had an English teacher who did not like kids who were good at maths and coasted through her class. At fifteen, I was very much that kid. She once tore up my homework due to slapdash spelling and grammar and threw it at me. I put it back together like a jigsaw as she was going through the answers with the class. She glared at me until we finished the first page, and when I started to turn it over piece by piece, lost it completely and sent me to the head. But it is the post-script I remember. She came up to me ten years later when I was waiting for a train and started to reminisce about the fun times we had when I was in her class and how she always had a soft spot for me. I was genuinely astonished.

Jeff K

Hey, if we're talking about our former teachers still: I have not watched Banshee yet but I fully endorse watching it because one of the two co-creators was my high school English teacher sophomore year.

MasterElodin

Thats what I thought too at first. Was getting annoyed that its only the wire all day especially since its really annoying to stream since its HBO. But then I gave it a shot and its been great so far. So if you havent I can only recommend trying it. But I if its just not your thing I can see how it could become annoying after some time

Jay

Yep, they're both loving the greatest TV drama ever made, giddy with excitement at the start of every episode, it's great! And I'd say that for every person like yourself in this community that isn't happy about that, there's someone like me who signed up exclusively for this show. With all reaction channels, you win some, you lose some.

8bitAndy

@Jay The greatest TV drama ever made is The Sopranos. And I hope you aren't serious about having signed up exclusively for The Wire because it's very quickly coming to a close. Hopefully you've signed up instead to support the channel.

Jay

You think The Sopranos is the best show ever, but you can't get into The Wire? I love The Sopranos but it's got 2 fairly dud seasons IMHO (4 & 6 part 1). For me, The Wire's basically perfect from start to finish. "Hopefully you've signed up instead to support the channel." I'm not sure what you're getting at there, but I doubt G & S care about my reasons for signing up as much as you seem to. I've been here since October, if all their YT subs supported them a fraction as much as I have, they'd be millionaires. And if you're all about "supporting the channel", why complain about them watching a show they both love?

Moon Logic

Thing about Michael is that he has been an adult for a long time, having to deal with his mum and take care of his brother. He never romanticized the game. Namond is like a spoiled child to Michael. When Michael joins the game, it is out of necessity and he goes in knowing that a deal with Marlo is a deal with the devil. It pisses Michael off that Namond thinks it's all fun and games.

ThePVO

Say what you will about Namond's mother, ultimately she accepted being the wife of a "soldier" and expected her son to follow suit because that life worked well FOR HER, but she provided Namond with a basic level of comfort, security and love that most of the other children were lacking. That Colvin was in the right place at the right time to intervene in Namond's life was a byproduct of the school system working as intended, small classes and personal attention. That it was a fluke caused by a program nobody believed in causes that to go unrecognized. The importance of education is often whittled down to employment prospects but at it's base it's meant to provide an understanding of the world beyond any student's own life experience. This is why the right wing attack on public education is so pernicious, it's purpose is to perpetuate an uneducated/undereducated working and criminal class.

Parabolica

There is only one thing I remember about s5 and it involves a FBI character profile. Also, I was convinced Bodie made it to the end of the show; but I liked they way they shot his final scene. The directions in which he was shooting copied the only directions a pawn can move on a chess board, emphasizing he was a solider and no more. Shame as he was one of my favorite side characters.

8bitAndy

"if all their YT subs supported them a fraction as much as I have, they'd be millionaires." they're very lucky to have you.

Blacky

I don't read it as acceptance. She relented under the very clear physical threat from her husband: do what you're told, or else.

Jay

Whatever, Andy. I think you confused yourself with whatever strange point you were trying to make about my patronage. Peace.

ThePVO

You think she was forcing Namond to sell drugs under threat from Wee-Bay?

Blacky

Ohhh, I misunderstood you. I was talking about the last scene between the twos, when WeeBay is threatening her to force her to let Namond go.

Charlotte Drolet

I signed up for The Wire. That is my support. I had never heard of this channel until YouTube suggestions for The Wire. Sadly when the Wire ends so will my Patronage. A ton of the movies that they upload, I have to rent to sync. I am not a millionaire so, I can't afford to hand out money for a channel that I am not watching. But I will check in and rejoin as soon as they watch something I want to see.

Michael Kang-Beats

Bubs has gotta stop thinking he can be some kind of mentor. He has a good heart but he has no idea what he's doing.

Mrs Donnelly is not a good person. She threatened to get Randy pulled out of foster care over him doing nothing. She knew he wasn't vandalizing. She scared him so much he snitched.

"Me? I know what a mayor needs."

Simone is right, George is wrong. Anyway...

Omar gives his stolen packages to Butchie. You guys are working way too hard to try to predict things and never getting anything right; this isn't some cheesy network tv show.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but in Episode 12, when Carcetti and Norman are at the Maryland state house waiting to see the governor, when they are leaving and the security guard stops them and says the governor can finally see them, that guard was played by Bob Ehrlich, who was the current Maryland Governor, and also a Republican, same as in the show. At the time of the airing, Ehrlich had just recently lost his re-election bid to the mayor of Baltimore, Democrat Martin O'Malley, who was, at least in part, the inspiration for Tommy Carcetti's character.

George is exaggerating the span between season 4 and 5. The S4 finale aired on December 10, 2006; S5 premiered January 6, 2008… that’s 13 months, not 2 years. Also, the biggest decision for a writer’s room is how big of a time jump will there between seasons, especially when dealing with characters played by growing children.

lol how many great scenes have been ruined by the side conversations over them :( love the reactions... but damn we wanna see *reactions* to the best scenes, not a side convo

I think the discussion about the cop being "just there to piss you off" is a strange one. Because every show has minor characters. There are minor characters who I pay more attention to, and there are minor characters like that cop that George pays more attention to. And both of us could say the same things about certain minor characters about them not pushing the plot forwards. The show would be too unrealistic if there was no minor characters. You can't have every character pushing the plot forward (to the same degree) otherwise you have to turn it into a play with only 10 actors on a stage. If you stop and think about it, brutality is that cops story. The senseless violence is his story. That is the role that he serves in the plot. It might be a plot that annoys you, but it is realistic and it helps show what the hoppers are living through. So if you enjoy the hoppers' stories than that cop is helping to advance their plots by causing drama for those kids.

I remember seeing that too -- great post. I cared about Namond, but I admit I'm always angry that -- out of all the sweet boys in their little group -- his rich, entitled little butt is the one that gets saved. Dukie and Randy were such sweet kids, while Namond was still a bully to Dukie right up to the end. Ugh.

Angela D. Mitchell

Yeah, she upset me too. She knew the one thing that scared Randy most was losing Miss Anna, and she used that against him that started the "Randy is a snitch" thing.

Great reactions to the final 3 episodes of season 4. Such an incredible season of TV but also -- so hard to watch by the end here. Miss Donnelly means well, but for me she's a realistic grey-shaded character. She was a caring administrator, sure, and I loved her reaction to Colvin's teaching experiment -- it was very moving that she could see how good it was. But she also started off Randy's reputation as a snitch by ruthlessly using his fear of losing his foster home with Miss Anna against him. I cared about Namond, but I admit I'm always angry that -- out of all the sweet boys in their little group -- his rich, entitled little butt is the one that gets saved. Dukie and Randy were such sweet kids, while Namond was still a bully to Dukie right up to the end. Ugh. But -- Namond was also a great example of the toxic idea in his mother's culture of what it means to "be a man." Namond was trying to cover for having a soft heart and just couldn't "be a soldier." So I loved that Wee-Bey actually called that out and wanted to give the boy a chance to be anything else that he could grow up to be. It's similar in a way to poor Bodie, who back in season 1 has to make himself despise Wallace in order to shoot him -- yelling at him to "man up" and "stand up straight," etc. By this season, that Bodie is long gone -- older and wiser -- and he doesn't lie to himself anymore. I always disliked Herc, but this was the season I grew to hate him. His arrogant selfishness and incompetence ruined four lives -- Randy's, Miss Anna's, Bubbles', and Sherrod's. Meanwhile, one last irony of "the system always wins" this season is that we saw Carcetti working so hard to become mayor, but the minute he did, now it's all "just two years until D.C." The goalposts just move forward and nothing gets done. My best teachers were Mrs. White (English) and Mr. Ferreira (HS Chorus), who made me love words and music. My worst was my 7th grade chorus teacher, who when I was bullied joined in with the bullies in mocking me and making my one favorite class the worst. Luckily it was just one year, but I will loathe that woman forever.

Simone had it on the money with looking for the new nails.

Josh Yates-Walker

I think officer Walker was there to represent true rotten apples. And a show how his interaction with the public causes that public to distrust all police. You know, the ACAB crowd.

Jblaze20

Simone was right!

MC

Simone : they should check the nails for new nails George : lmao you're joking right ***The Wire checks for new nails*** Simone : explanation of the properties of a new nail ; new, tightly sealed, looks different George : That makes more sense than checking for new nails Me : ponders if George is real.
