Manic pixie dream girl but done well.

Nice to see Jane has merch. I didn’t know that.

I pretty much agree with George at the end. I've always understood the film as saying that both the good and bad are what make up a life well lived. As for whether Joel and Clem make it, I don't know. I think it's more that they choose to accept the negatives because the positives are worth it. Talk about personal growth ♥️.

The best Jim Carrey movie. The story and style is so experimental and unique. But at its heart it’s just a love story about two people who got hurt by one another yet still want to give it another

This is my favourite movie of all time. Love the portrait of relationships and how we remember them. A bad break up but we still cling to those beautiful memories. I think they go around again, not necessarily staying together. But I like the idea of the relationship looping again, just like movie. My favourite part is Joel forgetting his childhood love of Huckleberry Hound doll because the "Clementine" is erased from his memory. I could talk about this movie forever.

If you want to hear a therapist's thoughts about this movie Cinema Therapy has a video on it on youtube.

Hooray! I've been waiting for this ever since your first Jim Carrey movie, because he's SO GOOD at playing quiet sadness and you would never guess from his comedy roles. (Speaking of which, now watch Punch Drunk Love - same thing, but Adam Sandler instead of Jim Carrey. Also Uncut Gems, of course, which is a better movie but I think Punch Drunk Love is more INTERESTING to watch Sandler's performance specifically in, and seeing Uncut Gems first would kind of spoil that by changing your expectations.) And while this is making me think of other movies to recommend: (bah, can't hit shift+enter on my phone) Robin Williams can do the same kind of contrast: watch Insomnia, one of Christopher Nolan's lesser remembered movies, but it's GREAT. Robin Williams and Al Pacino in a dramatic thriller. Kind of the same vibes as Se7en, but WAY less gross. And Memento, if you haven't seen it. Eternal Sunshine is by the same scriptwriter who did Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York, those are also great. (Also Adaptation, which everybody loves but me.)

Will they live happily ever after? No, I think they'll break up again eventually, but this time it'll be mutual and amicable, because they'll be able to recognize their own patterns and say, "We've reached the point where I'm feeling trapped and you're feeling resentful, it's time to quit before we start being nasty to each other." And until then they'll have a great time, for a while. (It's like George said: learning to say, "Let's just enjoy this," and not worry about where it ends, is a big step for Joel.) Being able to have a relationship and move on from it without trauma will be good growth for both of them.

I've seen this movie many, many times (and I would definitely recommend re-watching it at some point). It's probably my favourite movie of all time. Joel and Clementine are both fucked up in their own ways and they're definitely not compatible, which they acknowledge at the end, in the last 2 lines of dialogue, when Clementine reveals why it's probably not going to work out between them. The way Joel just responds with "Okay" is the culmination of everything that happened up until that point. Most likely, they'll end up hurting each other again. But they have learned that all the heartbreak and the grief are "okay" if it means experiencing this deep, genuine human connection. What a message. And how much weight to put into a single word. It's the embodiment of bittersweetness. I fucking love everything about this movie. The performances of Carrey and Winslet are absolutely stellar, maybe the best of their careers, but there's also the mind-fuckery in the editing, the writing that gives depth to every single character and last but not least the gorgeous Jon Brion soundtrack.

Punch Drunk Love, as is Uncut Gems, is outstanding, but I agree that PDL is more interesting. I also don't love Adaptation but adore Being John Malkovich and even Synecdoche, New York, which seems to be his least popular.

JoeNotCharles

Meant to say: I think that because of Joel's respond to Clementine saying she'll feel trapped again because that's what she does: "Ok." Not, "we'll work through it," or, "we won't let that happen this time," which would be an unrealistic (but natural) expectation to set, just, "Ok, I accept that'll happen."

Reminds me of Black Mirror somewhat in terms of tone and how technology and people’s nature can really create chaos.

Writer Charlie Kaufman is a genius. A quirky genius, perhaps.... but seriously gifted and inspired. I really adore this film. His scripts bring out the best in those cast to portray his characters. My favorite Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet performances. Considering the other stellar stuff they've done, I'm blown away by their work here. Give a great artist something meaty to work with, then just stand back.

this is my favorite movie. theres actually a subtle reincarnation fated lovers reading of this. its very romantic. i think the point of the film literally is just to enjoy, even the bad times... thats it. for georges reading, i think if they both know they are headed for bad times, even though they dont have specific memories of them, they are actually better equipped to deal with them, knowing that they both know and are choosing to be there.

michael clarke

also, this is a charlie kaufman film. this is his most accessible work. i think next is probably 'im thinking of ending things', which is why im writing this, to suggest that film. its haunting. i saw it and couldnt sleep for three days after.

Such a brilliant film.

This is probably my favorite movie of all time, and I am glad you two have finally seen it. And imo it plays better on repeat viewings. A little trivia about the movie, one of the original drafts of the screenplay leaked online before the movie was released (Along with Kill Bill before they split the movie, which had a completely different middle of the movie action sequence that bridged the two genres!). In this draft they had a different opening/ending that involved an elderly woman 50 years in the future going to erase someone from her memory. At the end it is revealed the elderly woman is Clementine and not only that while doing the interview process we see that her and Joel have spent their whole lives meeting and then erasing each other over and over again without realizing it. So I always took the final shot of the movie of them running on the beach repeating to be a reference to the original ending. If you dont remember your history you are doomed to repeat it!

Great film, and Michel Gondry is another genius attached to it. Recommend his music videos which are endlessly creative.

You guys should watch 500 Days of Summer, similar vibe IMO.

It makes me happy when George makes Stormlight Archive references.

Wrencher86

The fact that both of them woke up in a funk and went to Montauk I think helps to make the point of the movie: Growth happens to you whether you specifically know why or not. So even though George posits that they're doomed to repeat the same mistakes, I think that misses the main thrust of the film. The way the brain works is so intricate and complicated that erasing specific memories is likely not enough to remove the underlying growth that happens through experiences. Are they a good couple? Simone is right, they're probably not. But are they doomed to repeat the same arc of their relationship? Well... maybe. But maybe not. It really kind of depends on how cynical you want to be.

More Charlie Kaufman movies, please

George to Simone: “And you call yourself a Canadian.” Perhaps that means Simone is just awkwardly feminine.

If you’re going Charlie Kaufman, I feel like you gotta go Being John Malkovich

HeyHeyJK

I should watch this and maybe I can see more of the film than I did in theaters when all the handheld camera work made me super seasick and I could only listen to a lot of it. Buy a tripod, people!

Can you please watch more romantic comedy or romantic films
