Pedro 2024!

Interestedly , it didn’t end up launching Heder career

Odd Thomas

This was the 'cool' hipster comedy of the time. I never thought it was particularly funny tbh.

JayF

Diedrich Bader the "martial arts" teacher was also the neighbor in Office Space. He is a comedian who was on some of the episodes of the original Brit version of Whose Line is it Anyway. Apparently I was thinking of someone else on Whose Line but Diedrich did star on Drew Carey's sitcom for many seasons.

Diiirk706

Fucking L O V E this movie. Still hilarious.

Diiirk706

Now Blades of Glory for moar Heder!!!

Canadianant

To quote one of the great minds of our times "I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!" Grandpa Simpson this was when I was like kids think this is the height of comedy? Funny though I think heder is great in blades of Glory

Jay

Uncle Rico throwing the steak at Napoleon 😂. Must be 10+ years since I've seen this, never knew Mac's mom from It's Always Sunny was the grandmother. National Lampoons, Zoolander, Napoleon Dynamite, Beverly Hills Cop....... I suggest we bookend BHC with Ari Aster and David Lynch, or some such duo for next week:)

Opti_Frog

This made my day! I adore this movie so much. Not only is it hilarious but the tone perfectly manages to be both very real and surreal at the same time. And it captures something very rare in cinema: not movie-nerds but genuine and believable nerdy oddball characters. I do see quite a bit of myself in Napoleon before i learned "how to human". It's also very different from most American comedies, which is even better.

Day 247 of George desperately trying to convince me that beast jesus isn't way better art than the original you will never get me

Carl Tunney

George!!! Simone!!! Don’t forget to watch the end of credits scene!! It’s worth every second!!

W T

I also want to say that it ranks very low on my "awkward" meter, yeah, it might sell as such, but honestly? It's like the opposite throughout for me. Everyone, even the "baddies", are somehow so smooth in this absurdist parallel dimension where people can (mostly) just be people. It's kind of like recalling a boring childhood... except, fondly? I don't know, words describing how I feel about this movie are so ephemeral, but it definitely nailed that, and it will always remain as timeless as it was then. Definitely nowhere near the top 20 or so things you two watched on the channel, there are isolated scenes worse than the entirety of that movie. Everything is so exaggerated, the blonde douche is as over-the-top as could be, the bully just filling the spot for the sake of it... the self-confidence everyone has, Napoleon in particular - it's so far removed from most realities, it never tracked for me as such. Superbad I can see, but this? It's so innocent, even when Pedro offers you his protection.

Stupid Idiot

Surprised George didn't notice the dance at the end was the male belf dance in wow, hah.

Michael Kang-Beats

The movie is awkward, but it just has so much heart. That's what makes it last.

Jim Frykman

Zoolander + Napoleon Dynamite made for such a great comedic double feature this weekend!

Simone: “I think we could learn this, George, I think, we could do it!“ – CineDance!

Generators

except they did,,,? lol the irony of you not watching till the end to see that they watched it.

Crazykirsch

It's difficult to overstate how big this movie was among teens in the Midwest. Beyond the popularity of vote for Pedro shirts and other merch I swear this was the most quoted movie in our school for like 3-4 years. I think its appeal is just how sincerely it portrays the awkward/boring charm of pre/early-internet rural life.

Alex Ch

This is all a reminder that Tina Majorino is great on the series Veronica Mars which would maybe be a great watchalong some day.

Tenn Seven

The movie takes place in like 2004 (I think Napoleon's ID in the credit sequence says 04-05), and it takes place somewhere in Idaho. Also, the dance scene reminds me of the scene in Ex Machina when Nathan and Kyoko dance together.

punterjoe

I recognize Tina Majorino as Mac - the hacker in Veronica mars, but everyone else is a fresh face. Maybe that's a good thing, because in my mind they can always bethe characters from this film. Although I'd really like to have been a fly on the wall at the pitch meeting when they were trying to get this funded.

Chase Schleich

This movie is actually kind of how I remember the early 2000's here in small town USA. Everyone was sad and bored. All we could do was chat with "hot chicks" in chat rooms online (dial up internet) and take our bikes off sweet jumps. We only had sheep though. We didn't get a llama until a few years ago so that part is different. Oh and fashion was always about a decade behind lol.

djKENTO

I say we go down a Tina Majorino hole and follow this up with Water World. Got a GORGEOUS 4k transfer recently and I really wanna see how it holds up for people who never saw it in the 90s.

MacGuffinStuff

So many memes from this movie. I definitely went to high school with people just like these characters, and yeah, they were my friends lol (I was probably Pedro, gangster cousins and all). Napoleon even looks like my friend Dan who moved to my hometown from Minnesota. I agree it's kind of lampooning small towns, like the always ten year old fashion, but they do it with love, and it still makes me laugh, loved it. Thinking of movies this reminds me of, the closest I can think is Wes Anderson's first movie, "Bottle Rocket". This had a Wes Anderson feel to it and that movie of all of his is probably closest to this, except this has a whole lot more of the awkward. Okay, I'm gonna go eat a quesadilla now.

iOmegaTron

George! I'm surprised you didn't pick this up, but the dance that Napoleon does at the end is the one they used for the male Blood Elf dance in WoW!

TokyoLopez

idk what it is but that song napoleon danced too was my jam

G P

George hit the nail on the head - this movie takes place at the time it was filmed, but small town rural ID/WA still feels like going back in time 35 years.

oldcdog

Worth the price of Patreon just to see your full reaction to the dance 😂

Travis

Not sure how they would be using the internet and sending e-mails in the late 80s Simone

Jesus F Christ

The "dead-arm" run gets me every time. Seeing it again makes me want to run like that everywhere.

Haye Zeus

This movie lost its indie edge over the years especially with how everyone was doing the Napoleon impression. It got tiresome. But looking back at it after all these years it does have its charm even tho I personally think it’s very much a midwestern take on Wes Anderson.

Gary Fixler

Cinebinge is full of great quotables that Cinebitches can use in the wild, like "Isn't it true that art is just crime?" and "It takes two to tango terribly."

Brandon Meng

jamiroquai ... they had some real bangers back in the day. check out "virtual insanity".

sarCC

Have you two seen "Rushmore," the film this movie was trying to be? It's still my favorite Wes Anderson film and I highly recommend it.

Brandon Meng

It's not just that the movie is awkward, but they say some of the funniest shit when you least expect it. This was one of the most quotable films from the 2000s. "Your mom goes to college" ... "I caught you a delicious bass" ... "I see you're drinking 1%... is that cuz you think you're fat? cuz you're not. you could be drinking whole if you wanted." It's these absurd lines that get delivered with a straight face when it's most awkward that makes it sooo soo good and comedic gold. On top of that it's the ultimate underdog story of arguably the least popular kid in school uniting everybody to vote for his best friend for class president, essentially saving the day. With an iconic dance no less! -- I think I have to disagree with George on the "so bad it's good" take (forgot the exact words but paraphrasing). What made the dance so good wasn't that it was bad, but that it was wholly unexpected. Fucking love this movie, 10/10!

Logan Kerlee

This is an awful movie that's strangely entertaining. That's all that I remember thinking of this movie after I first watched it, so many years ago. :) Very happy to be watching it with you both, now. So... uh, yeah. That was the first time I've seen that post credit scene. Wow. xD So I don't have any comments throughout this movie. Yep. Nope. I went and typed that first bit as the movie was starting but I didn't feel the impulse to write anything at any point throughout. Simone - I feel your pain! xD lol, I had friends who acted that way for a bit after this came out. Yeesh. :P

Logan Kerlee

I watched this for the first time in Payette, Idaho with my ex wife. Wow - it really felt cringe then. :P

david moreland

Art is subjective is a perfect descriptor for this movie.

dieselbeast

I could never get into this movie, I found it so boring, and I like dry humor Seinfeld is one of my favorite shows of all time but this movie was a little to dry lol but to each their own

Martin

One of my favorite throwaway lines from the movie that happened too quickly for George and Simone to catch was when Kip was at the restaurant talking to Uncle Rico about his new online girlfriend and he explained how he was “getting kind of T.O.’d because she hasn’t even sent me a full body shot yet.” For some reason, I always found it hilarious that he had to abbreviate “ticked off” like people do when they use “P.O.’d” for “pissed off.” As if “ticked off” was a curse.

Sarahnade

It delights me that yall were giggling the whole time. Despite how over quoted it was at the time, this was a formative movie for me. It's so sincere, and so silly.

Brant

Check out Pedro in Crank (2006) and Crank 2: High Voltage (2009)

FatJuggernaut

The word you're looking for this particular movie is "QUIRKY"

Jester

Please watch Nacho Libre! Same director (Jared Hess). Same writers (Jared & Jerusha Hess) along with Mike White who wrote The School Of Rock. And to top it off it stars Jack Black! Has a bit of a similar awkward feel, fantastic wardrobe and music.

Andrew Roach

Why does one wear a helmet when riding a bike, is it for the 999 times nothing happens and you don't need it or is it for that 1 time you take a nasty tumble? Why does one watch credits to the end, is it for the 999 times they just end and nothing happens or is it for that 1 time you catch gold? Great job to see that end scene! Also who messed with us when they put two Ls in Llama? Do you know how many years I pronounced both Ls before someone corrected me...

Mr. Treat

Instead of going to senior prom, me and my best friend got 2 giant pizzas and spent all night watching Schwarzenegger movies. While all our friends texted us talking about how stupid and boring prom was 👍

Napoleon Dynamite came out 20 years ago in June. Believe it or not, it was a flop in theaters, but became a huge hit when it came out on VHS and DVD. I like the poster where Napoleon is standing in front of the school lockers and all his drawings are on the lockers. That's a better representation of the movie. The one you showed makes the movie feel like what is real and what is fantasy type of story. Actor Dale Critchlow who played Lyle, the guy who killed the cow in front of the kids on the school bus, who also married Kip and LaFawnduh, when Napoleon is on the Farm eating sandwiches and eggs covered with flies, Lyke was saying he found an Arrow head by the river. That wasn't in the script. He didn't know the cameras were still filming and they kept that in the movie. Rest in peace Dale Critchlow. One thing I noticed that I haven't heard anybody mentioning, what happened to Napoleon and Kip's parents? No mention or backstory which isn't need. Maybe some people guessed their parents either died when Napoleon and Kip were younger or taken from the parents to live with grandma. It's the second time I heard someone say this movie didn't have a story. I think you meant to say there wasn't any plot, but a funny awkward story unfolding in front of us. I use to have a Vote For Pedro shirt

pinkdino99

There was a kid in my class just like Napoleon. Poor sod.

UncleGaGa1979

There is a very short video of Heder's Napoleon Dynamite meeting Billy Bob Thornton's Karl Childers from Sling Blade. They filmed it during the making of their 2006 movie School for Scoundrels. It's only a minute long but it is just priceless. Also, I found out what the word "bodaggit" means. According to Urban Dictionary, a bodaggit is "A tear-drop shaped piece of feces which dangles from the rectum while defecating. To knock it off you must rock back and forth to dislodge it from your sphincter." There is a second definition, also from Urban Dictionary: "Something you call Uncle Rico after you hit his Idaho local van with an orange that is really a grapefruit. Note: Be careful, use of this word could end in serious falling off of fences." Speaking of Dynamite, please add 2009's Black Dynamite to your schedule.
