Thanksgiving in August. Sure, why not. If you guys watch Uncle Buck (1989) and Who is Harry Crumb? (1989) I would not object. Those are the two John Candy movies I watched when I was younger. Edit: If the tattoo is still healing George you could put large towels down or something. Might help with cleanup and keep the sheets clean longer.

Jay Davis

A Canadian not knowing who John Candy was? For shame!

Odd Thomas

The Mist and Planes in one weekend? Sweet!

Odd Thomas

I don't have tattoos. I think if I did I would just get one. One and done.

Jeff K

I genuinely don’t think this movie would work with anyone other than John Candy in the role of Del. Like, I genuinely don’t think anyone else has the type of innate likability. That's also why it blows my mind that they had a remake in development (which I assume is now dead in the water because I haven't heard anything about it in years and one of the attached stars is Will Smith), with Will and Kevin Hart. I assume Kevin Hart would be the Del role, though who knows. Either way, nothing against either of those two guys, who certainly are funny and have charm. But neither of them has even an iota of that big Teddy Bear energy that John Candy had that made us all automatically forgive any of his mistakes.

droodly

This was fun! Is "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" on your list?

Young Blood Priest

I’m glad you watched it because I’d never seen nor heard of this movie. This was a good time.

Com1xguy

Oh man, I would love to see them react to that. Such a great film.

Michael Robayo

I sided with Neil from the first time viewing this. They are both flawed characters, but Del is unaware and self-absorbed.

As for the concept of individualism, yes its a western thing because the philosophy was invented in the west, mostly in Britain, and was then exported to US, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong etc through colonialism. This philosophy was developed during the enlightenment, before that, the western culture was very similar to China, i.e. that your worth was not your worth as an individual but what your worth was to the community/collective. This opposing philosophy is called collectivism, and, I don't mean to be incentive here, but its the reason China is Communist, and why Hong Kong is protesting against china, because its a culture clash between two opposing philosophies. And in the same vain, the philosophy of individualism lead to Capitalism and the wealth we are experiencing today, because for the first time, the value you produced was your own and not the collectives and this lead to investment and wealth production. Also, individualism does not mean you have to be insensitive to others concerns, it just recognises that it has to be YOU that has to be concerned for others, not the collective imposing said concern on you.

Martin

The only other actor likable enough to pull off the Dell Griffith character today would probably be Jack Black. Chris Farley could have done it too.

Few things in this world are worse than moving with a couch and a refridgerator, my last place still has the scars im sure. But I would assume that part of the delivery for a new one includes bringing the damn thing in to where it would go? What would an old person do with a 500 pound fridge on their lawn, hire even more people to move it the extra 50 feet? Boo and hiss on these fridge delivery men! Edit: watch 'The Jerk' for more steve martin.

Odd Thomas

The other great Hughes/Candy film is Uncle Buck

Prof. Writhms

This movie is why I sleep with 2 pillows.

George, 1 degree temperature isn't "not bad," it's really cold! 1 in freedom units is -17 Celsius.

REDR58

Once again I renew my call for watching “The ‘Burbs” (1989) with Tom Hanks. Watch it!

MatthewBrown74m

When see this movie its not about who's right or wrong who you relate the most

Vwlss Nvwls

Steve Martin has been a hero of mine since I was a little kid watching him and listening to his stand up routines in the seventies. I saw this in the theater, and I have probably watched it a few dozen times since, and never get tired of it. I have known people like Del, who are kind to a fault, and just get really excited about making new friends that they get a little spastic. But for all their faults you can always count on them when you need them.

Alex Ch

The thing I will say about where our empathies lie is when you watch this a second or more time, you realize how hard Del is working the whole time to get Neal back to his family when there’s no particular rush for Del to get to Chicago.

Carlos Hurtado

I'm glad you guys are watching this in August. Everyone watches it in November. Which I understand, but it sucks having to choose which reaction channel to watch.

William Moffett

Thank god for torrents, because this movie isn't streaming for free anywhere.

No tattoos for me - yet. I'm currently 35 so really the chances of me getting tatted up have probably passed but I'm open to in the future for now at least. :) The end of the movie was well earned. Throughout the movie you grow to love John Candy''s character and accept his faults. We're supposed to be driven crazy by the guy - Candy did a great job with this role! Steve Martin's reaction to him is at times understood but also at one or two times we, the audience feel that he went too far. Both characters were great and each of them were played very well. This was the first time for me watching this. I've known about it for many years though! I remember my mom enjoying this when I was a kid but I did NOT enjoy it then. This film's comedy was obviously geared toward adults just as the drama was. I don't know when I'll ever watch this again but at least I know that I can recommend it now. :) From the start I was on Neal's side. Del drove me bonkers from the get go. John Candy played his role so well! xD George it's okay you just brought reality to a comedy. Great reaction, you guys! :D I really enjoyed this one! :)

Kinokind

I think that Hughes or someone suggested that Del latches onto people because of his loneliness. When I first saw it, as now, one's sympathy goes back and forth between Neil and Del, depending on who's being a jerk. By the way, did you notice the state trouper was a member of Spinal Tap? And the other guy at his New York office was Ferris's father? And the car rental woman worked for Mr. Rooney at ferris's school? Etc. And did you wait to see the last seconds of the film? Or did you miss the last scene?

FranciscoGios

On the Marathon Car Rental scene when Neil started his tirade to the time the attendant lady ends the scene, in sixty seconds the “F” word was used 19 times. Just an FYI.

Kinokind

Oh, and we learned Simone loves cheese and pie but hates being cold. These watch-alongs are so educational!

Ben

Love this film! Delighted you decided to react to it :) For another Steve Martin comedy, I'd like to suggest 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' (1988), I suggested it once before but I was waiting for another poll (that didn't have too many comments) to suggest it again, but as there is a Steve Martin connection I figured I'd mention it here! I'd love to see you guys react to that one. I'd also love to see you watch 'Parenthood' (1989), but I'm less hopeful of that gaining traction with your viewers. It does have a pretty stacked cast though so for that reason alone it would be cool to see!

Gary Fixler

Hughes directed this in '87, after Ferris in '86, and Edie McClurg (Car Rental Agent/Grace), Ben Stein (Wichita Airport Rep/Mr. Lorensax), and Lyman Ward (uncredited guy in meeting/Ferris' dad) were in both. They missed a Hughes Cinematic Universe opportunity, though, to make Ward's character the same guy. They both work for a big company with high rise office buildings, and they both live in Chicago. However, Ferris' dad is Tom, and at the elevator, Neil calls him John. Maybe he uses his middle name in his professional life?

Anthony James Marshall

If Simone wants good enemies to lovers to share a bed check out the John Cusack movie THE SURE THING

DeAndrew Greene

There's a similar movie to this called Due Date with Robert Downey Jr and it's kinda underrated.

Jesse Coombs

I would absolutely love to see you guys react to "Before Sunrise". It's another movie about two people who meet while travelling, but it's so much more than that. If you remember talking with someone and just vibing until you both realize it's midnight, well this is that movie. It's also a romance, just like Planes, Trains and Automobiles...

Monica Alarcon

I've never seen this movie from beginning to end and I loved it... Specially at the end when you realize Del didn't have anywhere to go and he did everything humanly possible to get a total stranger home for thanksgiving. Yes he's not perfect, yes, Neil is not perfect either but they are both kind human beings who stood up for each other and at the end became true friends... I can just imagine Neil telling Del after the movie ends "You will always have a home here" and even helping him find a job and his own place, I mean he showed he's a great salesman... Anyways, loved it and left me in tears...

Chase Schleich

I'm 38 with no tattoo's. Always wanted to get one, but never found something I wanted on my body forever. I don't like anything that much lol

Chase Schleich

1 degree barely even being freezing is why Celsius is stupid. With Fahrenheit at least you know that 0 degrees is cold as balls and 100 degrees is hot as hell which actually makes sense.

sarCC

Neat! Fun movie.

Chase Schleich

Houdini died from more than just a punch in the gut. He had appendicitis, the punch burst his appendix and that's what killed him.

Chase Schleich

100 miles is not that far. Once the car caught on fire, all they needed to do was find a working phone, Neil's wife could come get them. Then again, Del probably would have destroyed that car or caused a divorce or something lol

Adam Wetstein

That was not the original ending and luckily Hughes changed it. Turning it into the perfect movie it is.

Justin James

Another one of my favourites, that this one reminded me of, is "After Hours" (1985)... probably one of my favourites by Martin Scorsese!

TheSentry77

Yo George, will we get to see the back piece on IG or something?

Cliff Adams

Tattoos? My father had a tattoo on his right forearm. Skull with a snake through the eye socket and a dagger. He got it as 11th Airborne in Okinawa, designed by an artist in the same outfit... buncha guys went into town, got drunk, and tattooed. (Dad lied about his age when he was 16 to enlist before the end of WWII.) He hated the tattoo. Never wore short sleeve shirts, even when swimming. So, here I am, gonna turn 73 before the end of the month, and I still do not understand tattoos. My youngest daughter has a few... except for me not knowing I was paying for her first two when she was away at college, none anger me. I just do not understand. I am a geezer. I would vacuum your sheets each morning until the flaking let up. ----- I disliked Neal (the tight ass) from the start, but both were assholes who learned to be friends.

Lucifer Moon

I would love to see them react to Godzilla (1998) with matthew broderick.

Acexige

I love this film as is but it's always crazy to me that the original cut was over 3 1/2 hours long. A couple of interesting things i've heard: 1. The thief was actually supposedly a pizza delivery guy that Del didn't tip when the pair of them ordered pizza at the motel (hence he broke in and stole the money for revenge rather than it being some random event) 2. Del has a black eye in the scene where they get the cheese truck to take them to Chicago because there was a cut scene where Neil punches him because he didn't get insurance for the rental car. 3. The reason why Neil's wife is so relieved at the end is that she had been suspecting Neil of having an affair the entire time and therefore the emotion is as much for the fact that Del showed up confirming that everything Neil had said was true.

Andrew Roach

Wow, that was the most insightful post movie review I have seen for this movie, indeed it was not a just a review of the movie but life and is a testament to how great this movie is to allow for such a conversation. As per other comments Uncle Buck is Candy's other beloved movie where he is the main star along with a certain "new comer" to the movie industry who goes on to do big things, for a while. And I believe the Kevin Bacon cameo was a crossover to a movie he did at the same time and in that movie the same scene plays out with Martin being the cameo, quite a cool concept. Starlord would approve.

RE: Tattoos, I've never had one myself. I had a Labret piercing for a few days when I was young, but my mom freaked out about it at the time, so I removed it. A note, if no one else has mentioned it: the guy who you (and many others) refer to as "the teacher from Ferris Bueller" is Ben Stein. He's done many things across his career, for example he used to be a speechwriter for President Nixon, as well as a popular Comedy Central game show called Win Ben Stein's Money, co-hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the first 3 years.
