As Judge Smails once said, "Well then."

The 19th hole is golf slang for the bar after you finish your round.

deskmerc

Oh my god, I grew up with this movie. First, my dad was a golf nut in the 80's and tried to get me to play as well, and we were both huge fans of almost every actor in this film. Its a stupid, stupid movie, but I don't care, because its still hilarious even now.

Jeff K

The behind the scenes stuff for this film are pretty legendarily insane. Nothing but partying, cocaine, and general debauchery. I highly recommend the oral history/behind the scenes book "Caddyshack: The Making of a Hollywood Cinderella Story." Goes into all of the stuff specifically for this film, but also talks a lot about National Lampoon and Doug Kenney (one of the creators of National Lampoon and writers on this and Animal House, etc; there was a movie on Netflix about him starring Will Forte that's worth checking out called "A Future and Stupid Gesture." In a fun little casting twist, Chevy Chase is played in that movie by... his former Community co-star Joel McHale.)

MacGuffinStuff

Brian Doyle-Murray co-wrote this will Harold Ramis (and Club Paradise, starring Robin Williams) and played Lou, the guy running the caddy shack, he's also Bill Murray's older brother. He's been in a lot of movies with Bill, and more, he even had a small part in Vacation (and a bigger part in Christmas Vacation), and he was a writer on both SNL and SCTV. There are also two other Murray brothers who act or used to anyway, I think one is retired. Also, yes Rodney is always Rodney, for more of his awesomeness you could check out another 80s classic, "Back To School", which also has a young RDJ.

David Martin

The Bill Murray and the flowers is legendary comedy. It will live forever.

ExtraBigAssTaco

It's shocking, but that is exactly how many of us ate cereal back then... with several heaping spoonfuls of pure sugar...

Lots of crazy trivia associated with this movie. It was originally supposed to have had a linear and cohesive plot but, the production devolved into a sort of frat house atmosphere to the point where it was nearly impossible for the crew to get the shots they needed. The final cut was essentially what the editors could just cobble together hence the lack of any real plot line. Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight famously hated each other so a lot of the contention between their characters is a genuine dislike on the part of the actors. Chevy Chase and Bill Murray also had a beef and refused to appear in any scenes together. After initial filming had completed the production company insisted they film a scene together because they were the two biggest comedy stars that that point in time. Harold Ramis hurriedly setup the scene where Chevy Chase is playing at night and hits his ball into Bill's house/shed. It's been claimed that 100% of Bill Murray's lines are improvised.

ExtraBigAssTaco

They dredge the ponds regularly, wash the balls, and sell them again at a cheaper rate.

ExtraBigAssTaco

I grew up on Back to School, Weird Science, Commando.... OK, so that might explain some of my psychological issues... lol

ExtraBigAssTaco

The sequel is even more ridiculous, but a sequel. It swaps out Rodney Dangerfield for Jackie Mason, and Bill Murray for Dan Aykroyd.

Ian Forbes

The scene with Chevy making the drink was just a joke that he had open, flat, and half-empty bottles of Perrier so he poured one into the other, shook it to try and make it look carbonated and placed a cap on it to appear like he was opening it for the first time.

sarCC

Caddyshack 2 is really disappointing. A better follow-up would be Fletch!

Jeff K

Yep. And as Simone suspected, it was 100% improvised. Ramis came over to him and was like, "Have you ever been on the course and pretended there are commentators?" (or something like that) and Bill just said, "I know exactly what you mean" and came up with it all on the spot.

Bennett Holleman

The music in the thunderstorm is from The Ten Commandments. The actor playing the bishop was in that movie.

REDR58

Despite having grown up in the 1980s, I’ve never seen this. So I found a cheap Blu-ray copy nearby and I’ll be watching this tonight!

Tenn Seven

Ty didn't drug that girl. He just had a bunch of half-empty, old bottles of sparkling water lying around and he poured them into one bottle, shook it up, and put a cap on it so she would think it was a new, unopened bottle.

John Richards

For George: When Lacy is at Ty's house, Ty takes two open bottles of Perrier water sitting on the counter and pours them together to make one full bottle and tries to put the cap back on. He's not drugging her, just trying to hide that the bottled water is from old, opened bottles.

Tenn Seven

Fletch is awesome, but I don't agree with you about Caddyshack 2. I know I'm in the minority, but I think Caddyshack 2 is almost as good as the first one.

"it's still just a chocolate bar soaked in urine" I mean, people hold their dicks into the water and we still gargle pool water, mostly because it's properly chlorinated and, most of all, massively dilutes the little pee released. The real disgusting possibility is hair tangles and dust/cloth bunnies, not that I'd be overly fond of a pool bar to begin with

Cliff Adams

Like to add that Chase was one of the first group of regulars on Saturday Night Live and when he quit, Bill Murray replaced him. So having that scene with the two of them interacting was met with great anticipation by all SNL viewers.

Shonnicus

Originally the draft or script was supposed to be a serious story. But once the comedy writers got hold, this is the movie you have. So the Danny story doesn't really belong in this movie and you 2 got it that you just look at this movie as comedy bits. Rodney Dangerfield in his first movie gig just adlibbed his lines. Bill Murray flower bit was improvised and just asked the production design for some flowers. The Gopher was added after principal photography shot on a soundstage.

Kinokind

That was Rodney's standup persona, but he was more self-deprecating on stage. In real life he was shy and insecure. He famously thought he was failing on his first day of filming because the crew didn't laugh. It had to be explained to him that they had to stay quiet or ruin the take. There was famously much improvisation in this film. The entire scene in Ty's house with Cindy Morgan was improvised, including the massage oil being dumped on her. Her reactions are real, because she had no idea what he was going to do or say. The Murray's came from a large catholic family and several had been caddies, so the story was originally somewhat auto-biographical. But as the personalities of the principals grew to fill the film with more and more improvisation, the original plot centering on Danny was greatly reduced. It was not your imagination. There was apparently drug-fueled anarchy in the production, with nighttime golf cart races in the dark (one ended up in the lake) and associated debauchery. It is said that Sarah Holcombe, who played Irish Maggie in this film and the mayor's underaged daughter in "Animal House", fell victim to the rampant drug use and afterward dropped out of show business to recover.

JayF

Yes Rodney plays basically some version of himself in all his movies. The best one aside from this IMO is Back to School which also stars a young RDJ. Yes it's worth putting on a poll.

Jacob King

Legend has it Ted Knight was the only one not on cocaine which makes me somewhat sympathetic to his character.

mitch s

the 19th hole in golf is the bar

mitch s

He didn't drug her. He didn't have any beer except the ends of those three bottles so he made one beer from them and shook it up so it was bubbly

Alex Ch

If I had a nickel for every movie George and Simone watched that became a restaurant chain I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

REDR58

Well, it took me 2 nights to get through this. What a slog. The best parts were, aside from the very lovely Cindy Morgan, Dangerfield and Chase, but Murray was just more stupid than funny. This was nearly as bad as Police Academy. I missed these as a kid growing up in the 1980s and perhaps it would have been funnier to me back then. Great reaction though!

Chase Schleich

I think it's time for a break from the 80's comedies for awhile. There's been a ton of them on the channel over the last month or so. They're classics, sure, but they work better in small doses.

Chase Schleich

Actually, that "chlorine" smell that you smell at a lot of pools is the chlorine mixing with urine to create that chloride odor. I used to love that smell.... until I learned what caused it lol

Gary Fixler

Yes, I had friends who just about emptied the sugar bowl into their cereal. They'd finish, and there'd still be a mound of sugar in the middle of the milk. Grossed me out. I never added any, and I'm the furthest thing from a healthy eater.

Gary Fixler

Yes, Chevy's sound effects were a Six Million Dollar Man reference. He was a test pilot who barely survived a crash, and was rebuilt with nuclear-powered limbs, to the tune of $6B, and that's in 1970s dollars! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K82kFgBgHGc

Gary Fixler

Did anyone notice in the credits that Mr. Gopher was played by Chuck Rodent?

Maarten Martens

One of the weirdest films I've seen, very random and unhinged, but a couple of great scenes. It feels like they made an idea-box and just stitched together every piece of paper that was in there. Throw in some Bill Murray and off you go haha.

Ron K

You guys should do Back to School. Rodney is the lead. Also has a young RDJ, Pauly (Rocky), and strangely enough a musical performance by Danny Elfman.
