Ooh, fun, haven't watched this in many years.

dieselbeast

Normally don't care for South park it's mainly the animation style that was off putting, but I'll watch to see Simone squirm cringe uncomfortableness lmao

JediLounger

South Park is king lol. Blame Canada! I would not object to you guys watching a “greatest hits” of South Park episodes. So get a top ten list of south park episodes, and watch them. That would be quite fun.

Odd Thomas

I think early South Park was great but like The Simpsons it should've been put to bed a long time ago.

droodly

"That's not actually Conan O'Brien." Nope. That's DATA! EDIT: If I remember correctly Brian Boitano was an American figure skater who beat the Canadian skater in the Calgary Olympics? I think? EDIT EDIT: George, you're a SHIT!

Michael Green

Seems ridiculous now, but there was definitely a moral panic over the Simpsons in the early days--largely focused on the incredibly dumb concern that Bart was a bad role model. Time and societal change have softened it considerably, but the Simpsons skewering of American life was genuinely shocking for some people, especially considering it's venue on broadcast tv. If you're a fan of the Simpsons, it's definitely a history worth looking into.

mitch s

George Cloney is probablly the biggest south park fan and is one of the biggest reason the show got picked up in the first place.

DM DC

I highly recommend watching a few episodes for the show. Especially Season 10 Episode 8: Make Love not Warcraft, probably one of my favorite episodes of the show.

bietz

Need more of Simone's South Park voice.

Jay

I think that's very harsh on SP. I can't watch new episodes of The Simpsons (when I say new, I'm probably talking about everything post Golden Age). I'll occasionally leave it on out of curiosity, but I have to turn off within 5-10 minutes. It's offensively, infuriatingly bad, especially if you remember The Simpsons at it's peak. I don't watch SP religiously like I used to but as far as I can tell, it's just the way it's always been. The occasional dud episode but when it's good, that show is still laugh out loud funny.

Pam Nail

The South Park show started when I was a freshman in college, and it was HUGE with me and pretty much everyone I knew (also Beavis and Butthead, which started around the same time). The original title was South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose (which obviously fits better with the plot), but the MPAA told them they couldn't have the word "hell" in the title, reasoning that no matter what the rating of the film, the title had to be rated G (which would have been news at the time to the makers of Hellboy and From Hell). So they changed it to the current "family friendly" title.

Odd Thomas

The doctor was Eric Idle, not Eddie Izzard

Orphan Crippler

Pretty sure that was the highest rated south park episode ever made and the creators didn't even want to release it

Jeff K

Yep. The movie was actually the second time he did a voice for South Park. He also provided the “voice” (as in, the barks) for Sparky the gay dog in… was that the first season? It was the episode where Big Gay Al was introduced, I believe.

Jacob King

I’m sure you’ve googled Brian Boitano at this point but the Brian who was actually in the movie was Brian Dennehy the sheriff from Rambo.

Odd Thomas

As I recall it, Winona Ryder was kind of 'washed up' in Hollywood in 1999 (which sounds crazy in retrospect, especially as she was in Oscar-winner Girl Interrupted with Angelina Jolie). Then she had the shoplifting incident - which again, in the trash fire of 2023 seems absurdly inconsequential - and was left in the showbiz wilderness pretty much until Stranger Things. 'Heathers' is an absolute classic of Ryder's btw. It pretty much wrote the book on 'dark comedy' in the 80s. And Edward Scissorhands, obvs

bietz

I love when George gets political and stuff.

Naturekitty5309

I saw this movie on opening night. People were walking out at the same time they were leaving in the movie which was really ironically hilarious.

sarCC

YAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!

Jonah

How did I not put together the war between Canada and the US being the main plot of the film and you guys being Canadian. LMAO Wow Simone's shock in the intro was so much funnier since I forgot that very prudent point.

Spacedone

Who coincidentally (given that George spotted him in the 'Kenny goes to Hell' scene) also played John Wayne Gacy in 'To Catch A Killer'.

Spacedone

I saw this in a half-full cinema and when Mr Garrison said the line "I don't trust anything that can bleed for 5 days and doesn't die" ever single man in the cinema erupted with laughter and every woman had the same expression on their faces as Simone. :D

Spacedone

That you couldn't name a Minne Driver movie tells me that you still haven't watched Grosse Point Blank yet. Watch it, you won't regret it.

Florian Geyer

Its a very old info but Trey Parker and Matt Stone did a musical "The book of Mormon" I can highly recommend it. It didn't settled in germany so I only listened to the audio, but its freaking good!

David N

If i remember childhood correctly you might learn bad words from movies but you only use them because they are forbidden. Its the fact that you arent allowed to say certain things and your being a cool guy and doing it anyway (mostly to your equally dumb friends). If more parents were like george there would be more casual cursing but it wouldent be a big deal for kids to latch on to.

Jonah

I wonder if you can put time stamps in the youtube version so that people can pull up a second youtube video along side it and play whatever song is playing in the video so people on youtube can have an unedited or uncensored experience too. I'm pretty sure the whole soundtrack is on there, so if you completely mute the song, and just put a time stamp showing when to start it, and how long it plays, and what the song name is, people can at least get what you're currently reacting to, and none of the swear words, or DMCA material is ever posted on your channel. Just a thought, it might be a bunch of extra editing, and leaving in longer clips than you normally would, but I feel like would be a cool work around. i've never seen a page do a "watch along format" on youtube to get around the copywrite and swear words. In the editing you could put in a short clip of you explaining the format and how you'll want a second tab of youtube open so you can get the full experience, since an edited version of this would be confusing with no sound from the movie. lol

Gary Fixler

The guy in hell, after Hitler, and before Gandhi, was comedian/actor/etc George Burns, who was born in 1896, started performing in 1902, and was still performing up to his death in 1996, a few years before this movie. He always had a cigar, and spoke in a gravelly voice, and was nationally known for decades, until he died and vanished almost immediately from popular consciousness. I'm not sure why he's in hell, but it may be because of his most famous works, his movies, "Oh, God!" in which he played God, and its sequel, "Oh, God! You Devil," where he played both God and Satan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087835/

Tenn Seven

They didn't listen to the rock version of "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" during the end credits?

Addie Pollack

I think it gets revealed in a later season but in the south park universe only mormons get into heaven. That’s why the population of heaven is so small and Ghandi is in hell lol. The creators aren’t mormon but they like poking fun at the religion

Chris

Funny story I was at a summer camp where our trip was going to the movies. I was 7 and managed to just fall in line nonchalantly from the group going to watch Tarzan and the group going to watch this. The whole movie is pretty much meta on my experience when first seeing it.

Gary Fixler

The voice of the clitoris was Mary Kay Bergman, who was also the voice of all the moms, and Wendy, among others from the start of the show (1997) to this movie (and was a voice in 400 TV commercials, and of more than 100 animated characters). Sadly, she suffered depression, and killed herself at age 38 (12-gauge shotgun to the head) a few months after this movie came out. She's a lot of things many of us know, like Mrs. Butterworth, a bunch of Disney characters, and she was even in the 1997 game The Curse of Monkey Island: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Kay_Bergman

Can you go to the store and pick up a bag of mini fucks?

Logan Kerlee

I am so happy that you enjoyed this SImone! Growing up, I loved this movie so much! hahahaha, I remember seeing this for the first time in 2000, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I was 12 years old at the time. I'd already watched a good bit of the show beforehand. xD, I was a tainted youth. Pretty sure that I was introduced to the show when I was 9 or 10 years old. This one takes me back! :)

Starromania72

I've listened the movie soundtrack so many times on car journeys and it's the sole reason reason I know 'O Canada' by heart (performed on the album by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, assisted by Terrance & Phillip). I remember reading somewhere that Stephen Sondheim lauded this as one of the best movie musicals of all time but I can't find the source - he's certainly gushed about subsequent SP musical offerings. The sad part about this movie is that Mary Kay Bergman, who provided most of the female voices for the show, took her own life just a few months after the movie came out. Hadn't watched much of SP then but loved the movie and geez the news was a shocker.

Gary Fixler

"I was just trying to make the world a better place for children!" Literally: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Amos T Fairchild

Indeed. People whining about spoilers on open chat groups months after a film comes out...

Johnny Liu

I haven't seen this in a while but Uncle Fucker is still an absolute banger

Com1xguy

Skeet Ulrich is the person in the picture above Satan and Saddam. He was in the Scream movies and is Jughead's dad in Riverdale.

JayF

I see that someone already pointed out that Brian Dennehy was the sheriff in Rambo. He was also in at least three other really good films. I suggested them way back around the Rambo reaction but please check out Silverado (1985, check out the cast because holy shit), Cocoon (1985, directed by Ron Howard and also has a strong cast), and F/X (1986, a real hidden gem).

CT

Great reaction as always, Simone!

djKENTO

The brilliance of this movie goes beyond It’s surface level humor. This is a movie that is about the reaction TO THIS MOVIE. It’s just predicting it’s own future and that is so fucking unique. No other movie does that.

sheriffjt

Blame Canada was nominated for an Oscar and performed live on the academy awards show with Robin Williams

Matt Gwinn

You guys have to watch their first film Cannibal! The Musical

Chase Schleich

This film was in the Guinness Book of World Records. From IMDB: "In the Guinness World Records 2001, this film was said to have the most profanity used in an animated film. The book cited a total of 399 swear words, including 146 uses of the word "fuck," along with 199 offensive gestures and 221 acts of violence.'' Greatest record ever lol

evilmunky

Minnie Driver is in that film you've not wtached yet called Grosse Pointe Blank

Will Moffett

You should really watch the documentary on HBO called "6 days to air". It shows the behind the scenes of the show's creation and how in the beginning, they made every single episode in 6 days, and aired it the next week in order to make it as topical as possible. Whatever they were making fun of in those episodes....literally happened LAST week. It made for great conversations in school or at work.

Lucifer Moon

George Clooney is a huge south park fan and is one of the main reason the show ever got made in the first place by throwing a lot of his weight behind it.

Chaz Mannington

I didn’t watch the YouTube version, I assume it’s four minutes long

dmoock

Can we get BASEketball on a future poll?

Juley

The musical tribute to Les Miserables is so awesome!

Noe Ramirez

South Park is one of my favorite shows of all time. Yeah not all of it holds up, or is a little weird by todays standards, but man this show is a perfect combo of witty satire and just dumb and crude shit. I love it. The creators take risk and are not afraid of doing anything.

JCR

There were a couple of short films Matt and Trey made in the 90’s which introduced the kids and the concept, the latter of which went viral (which in those early internet days meant a hyperlink or tiny movie clip emailed to everyone you knew). In that short, Jesus and Santa erupted into open combat over the rights to the spirit of Christmas, and the boys, in an effort to resolve the matter, pondered what Olympic skater, Brian Boitano would do. Then he appeared and dispensed some sage wisdom, settling the feud between JC and Santa. A lot of what would become South Park hallmarks (the construction paper animation, the foul language, the inclusion of random famous people just because, and Kenny dying with Kyle exclaiming “Oh my God! They killed Kenny!!”(literally in every episode for many, many seasons )) were evident in the short and it caught the attention of some famous people, including George Clooney, who then, as others have explained, helped fuel interest in a TV show, and thus, South park was born. I remember seeing the short at work and everyone under the age of 40 becoming absolutely obsessed with it, and also later the show. I was the one who recorded it each week and then passed the tape around to anyone who hadn’t or couldn’t see it. Watching the first couple of seasons of the show will answer most questions about that which didn’t make total sense in the movie. Interesting side note: Trey Parker was a music major in college and is a giant musical theater fan, which is why this movie and Team America are musicals. He minored in Japanese and for all the Asian stereotypes in everything they made, any Japanese reference has a seemingly out of place air of authenticity.

Jonas Buckner

The original title of the movie was supposed to be South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose, but they were disallowed from using that because it was too offensive, so they changed the name to Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, and the censors just didn't get it.

Ketzalborne

aboot time i signed up to the patreon because i knew the YT version would be a nightmare to edit

Ken Moorhouse

My grandma was the same way about banning the Simpsons, South Park, and Doug because she questioned the content.

UncleGaGa1979

Saw this at the theater opening day. It was so funny that I missed half of the jokes, so I bought another ticket and watched the movie again. Am I the only person who thinks this, but doesn't Mr. Mackey, the guidance counselor, look an awful lot like John Oliver? Blame Canada was nominated for Best Original Song at that year's Academy Awards. Trey and Matt ey and Matt tried to get Anne Murray to perform the song at the Oscars but she declined, so they got Robin Williams to perform it instead.
