Highly recommend Dark City from the same director, the director’s cut. Same kinda gothic nightmare vibe. Lots of retro horror aesthetics like this movie… but TOTALLY different type of story.

FrancescoTakesItEasy

Hell yeah, I know what I'm watching tonight. Agree on Dark City. It's as if The Matrix was a noir. Came out a year before The Matrix. There are a lot of details that are eerily similar, where I'm not convinced those are just coincidences. The Matrix also shot in the same studio in Australia and re-used some of Dark City's sets. It's really good.

Elroy

Hopefully you guys eventually watch the karate kid part 2 and eventually reach cobra Kai

CT

The theatrical cut spoils something in the opening voice-over, so definitely watch the director's cut.

Keith Wood

The graphic novel is amazing but has a much darker tone than the movie. It makes the film seem like Disney's version of the story.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yeah this movie is basically all I loved in high school, especially the soundtrack lol. RIP Brandon Lee, he'd done a few movies before this but this movie really would have launched him to another level, sucks. The city always reminded me of Tim Burton's Gotham but it is actually supposed to be Detroit, and Devil's Night is or was a real thing in Detroit, it became a tradition to set fires to abandoned buildings on Halloween. I also think it's funny I share at least two things in common with Dwight Shrute, this is supposedly his favorite movie, and he was a big Battlestar Galactica fan too lol damn, you think you're Jim but you end up being Dwight.

droodly

Oof. This had me tearing up with nostalgia. I'm so happy you watched this. I'm old-ish. This came out while I was in the middle of highschool. My friends and I were all into the grunge scene. Listened to the kind of music in this movie. Bought the soundtrack on CD. Dressed as the crow for Halloween that year, whether we could pull it off or not. It was just really nice being transported back, and seeing how even a more modern generation appreciated this movie, and felt some of what we did back then.

JediLounger

This movie definitely has a vibe, all Alex Proyas films do. Personally I find all of his movies fun to watch, but they are definitely, uh, varied in quality. My favorites of his are Dark City (1998) and Knowing (2009), with The Crow coming up just after. I, Robot (2004) is probably his most studio centric movie, and Gods of Egypt (2016) is top tier Cinecringe material. I will watch all of them with you. Edit: As another poster said, get the directors cut of Dark City. Don’t look at the cast list or the poster, go in totally cold. You guys will love it.

Logan Kerlee

I AM STOKED to find this on here, this morning!!! HELL YEAH! xD Going to be firing it up in a bit. :)

Michael Robayo

This was def an inspiration for Heath Ledger's Joker. Even the scene where he confronts the main bad guy and his thugs is similar to Ledger's first major scene as Joker at the mob meeting. But this is a classic, and inspired so many movies that came after. And one of the best soundtracks ever.

Luis Torrefranca

The comic explains the source of his ability well and why the fight on the rooftop at the end went the way it did. hint: shooting the bird was a coincidence

Lola Lirola

Omg, the memories! I had to laugh, because when you said you didn't know what this was, I was like "Oh, it's Goth Batman!", and five seconds later, George was wondering if he would get on top of a building and look wistfully down at the city... 😂 He's Goth Batman *and* Goth Joker in one! I also hadn't noticed until you pointed out how many parallels it has with Nolan's Dark Knight! And now I will forever treasure my mental image of a teenaged, angsty Nolan secretly loving this huge cheeseball of a movie and watching it a thousand times. That makes me think there's hope for him yet. The soundtrack for this was so killer, I listened to it on a loop at 14... and yeah, Brandon Lee was so ridiculously hot. I remember the shock of reading the movie magazines when he died, and all the conspiracies and rumours that swirled around it. I didn't know the stunt double was Chad Stahelski!! He was also the stunt double for Keanu in the Matrix movies, that's how they're friends. In the rewatch I kept thinking that all the supercool posing in silhouette in the rain is probably Chad, and now I look at him differently! And the whole 90s esthetics... ah, the brown lipsticks, the piecy updos, the part where they give the main villain some dollar store extensions because all men had long hair back then, the Bai Ling, the uh heroin... (As someone who grew up in a kinda dodgy neighborhood in the 80s and 90s, that 5-second-rehab was hilarious, though.) The whole movie straddles the line perfectly between dark and gory goth and relishing the campiness of it all. Like you said in the reaction, the movie goes all the way into the mood and it's such a great time! Damp goths forever!!

Lola Lirola

Dark City is fantastic! I remember my sister really really loved it. (And yes, get the director's cut)

ChickensAreRacist

Good Lord 1994 was quite a year for lasting movies. Every movie reactor’s first 3 requirements are seemingly Shawshank, Forrest Gump, and Pulp Fiction. Then there’s Lion King, and now the Crow. I’m sure more but man, clearly that was a good year for movies. Edit: Watching it with yall for the first time since I saw it in the theaters, and I’m seeing it the way i did back then as a young teen: It’s a slog of a movie. But you two’s reactions are why it’s fun to keep watching.

Lola Lirola

For more of this gothy camp fun vibes: The Craft - mandatory viewing at every girls sleepover in the 90s. Bram Stoker's Dracula - all the victorian horniness trying to break free of the corsets, and Keanu at his most lost.

Christopher Shukait

One of my favorite movies. I was the crow last year for Halloween 😎

REDR58

And Gary Oldman with some of his best work in Bram Stoker’s Dracula! I hated that movie with a passion on first viewing but I’ve since come to really enjoy it.

sarCC

Hey, neat!

Monica Alarcon

Just to add to the consensus... yes. Watch Dark City, director's cut... please.

Odd Thomas

An absolute classic that was both inspired by Batman and inspired the Nolan Batman films.

Odd Thomas

Yes Dark City is awesome too (director's cut). Weirdly Alex Proyas only made soulless Hollywood garbage after that. I think George did Gods of Egypt for Cinecringe.

Logan Kerlee

I am NOT wanting a remake for ths movie! Yeeeeesh, that would be so terrible. DUDE, I am so happy that you're both watching this right now! I'm also VERY happy that you're both genuinely blind to this movie! xD So flippin' awesome! THE SOUNDTRACK TO THIS MOVIE IS FLIPPING AWESOME!! If you both don't mention that, I will be crushed. xD Dramatic, yeah I know, but really, IT'S SO AWESOME! Every year, yeah. Devil's Night is a terrible "holiday." This movie does NOT hold back. Holy shit, it doesn't hold back. I first watched this when I was a kid. Not in theaters, but I watched this years later when my mom bought it for me. I had to have been like 9 years old, maybe? I'm emotionally hit by this scene (Eric coming out of the grave) EVERY TIME I SEE IT! This movie DOES NOT HOLD BACK.It's VERY DARK! GEORGE IF YOU TALK CRAP ON THIS MUSIC I WILL FLIP A LID! lmao, that was Nine Inch Nails. lmao, the bar intro scene is pure 90's and I love it. For sure George, yeah! They made it pretty obvious that this was from a comic book originally. Yeah, 100%, the villains are strict chaotic evil in this. They're terribad. I'd classify Eric as Chaotic Good. He's a vengeful hero. The reason why you felt that is purely because this movie hits you on an emotional level, Simone. You're not alone in feeling that. I'm disappointed that you both missed that joke! xD "Can you put me up for the night?!" lol, no, come on! Eric Draven's a dope ass name. I don't know what you've got against the name Eric. xD "Who opens a bag of chips like that?" "Chaotic evil people." lmao, great response Simone! I could never live in that apartment, no matter how much I'd love to! Damned crippled legs! hahaha, stairs are the enemy! Love how quick you were to say Strahd, Simone! Heath Ledger's Joker may've taken some inspiration from this, yeah. Surprised neither of you noticed the bloodstained car. Phylactery makes sense, yeah - though I wouldn't classify Eric as undead. "No, no, no, you crazy bitch! Let go of the bird!" That made me laugh so much! I swear, I love how invested you are Simone! In the end, the twisted bitch got her eyes pecked out by the crow. Really liked the lead vilain's death. The symbolsm was great as well as the execution (of the scene). FINALLY YOU MENTIONED THE MUSIC!! hahaha, I friggin' loved the music in this. I am NOT confident that the new take on this movie will not stand up in comparison. I'll watch it, 100% though, if for nothing else but to be able to confidently say that this one's superior. Though, I'd be happy to be wrong.. I just don't see it happening. This movie was fantastic. I'm so happy that you both enjoyed this so much! I totally knew you'd both dig on it, but I was unsure how much. It makes me very happy, it really does. I won't say that this movie's flawless but I'm very happy that this was made. So yup, this is now my favorite reaction from you two. Wow, it was so awesome! :) Had an amazing time watching a childhood favorite with you both.

Logan Kerlee

There we MANY people who said this when talking about The Matrix. Obviously they got quieted down by how awesome The Matrix was, though.

Logan Kerlee

Biiiiiiiiiig yup on that! I'm very happy that this movie transcends generations and is able to be enjoyed by many. This one absolutely deserves the attention. :)

Funny That

Never though I'd ever get around to watching this one (much as with Highlander), but looking forward to checking out. A Cinebinge treat.

Dale

The excitement I felt when I logged in and saw this post made my week! One of the best movies I ever experienced and I can't wait to watch it again with you guys!

Odd Thomas

They've been talking about remaking this for like 20 years. I'll believe it when I see it.

Chase Schleich

They've been more than talking. They've had scripts, they've had actors and they've had directors attached multiple different times and it has always fallen through, sometimes at the last second. They'll remake it eventually. I'd like to see Blumhouse be the company to do it. Good track record and they can do a lot with a small budget.

warcrimes

Man this movie does not age well. oh well.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yes, agree with Lola and others above, The Craft and Bram Stoker's Dracula would be great choices going into spooky season (Hallowinge? Nah, nevermind, I'm ashamed). Of course I'm also still hoping for Poltergeist, the movie, not actual poltergeist, it's a classic. That or maybe even some Conjuring or Insidious. Happy Autumn Equinox btw all you witches, pagans, or just plain astronomy nerds (or is it the 23rd?). The only problem I have with the Craft is that the soundtrack is full of awesome songs, except they're all cover versions of much cooler original songs. And we used to play the soundtrack to Dracula in my high school art class just to get the creativity flowing, other soundtracks and scores too, but that one I loved.

Stephanie Bedworth

There are three sequels. The second one, City of Angels, is not nearly as cool but it's not bad either. The third and fourth one are pretty horrendous. There was also a tv show. It only had one season and I don't think it was ever finished.

Gary Fixler

This was fun. I admit I've rolled my eyes over this film since it was released (and when I saw it pop up here today), because I went to college around this time, and a sophomore goth dude there was completely obsessed. He kinda looked like him, with the long black hair over his face, and he had the full outfit, and eye makeup, and said everything like a moody superhero, and would move and turn slowly and epic-ly. Like if you said hello as you passed, he'd slowly turn to look at you like he was about to kill someone, and he basically lived in that character 24/7, creeping everyone out, at least that whole first year. He may have left after that, because I don't recall seeing him in later years, but this movie is completely tied with his oddness for me, so I haven't seen it since. It's better than I remembered.

Young Blood Priest

This movie came on got to the point and got out (something I wish more movies would do). Even though this isn’t exactly my kinda flick I have to give it two thumbs up for having no fat.

Lola Lirola

Hallowinge is perfect! Better even than Cineween! Never be ashamed of a good pun 😂

Monica Alarcon

I was so hyped for this movie in 1994, went to watch it after school by myself and I went straight to the comic book store (where I was eventually employed) to order a copy of the trade paperback, it was my first tpb and the first non-mainstream comic I ever read... I bought the special edition hardcover last year and re-read it and it's still soooo good... oh and I met James O'Barr at a comic convention some time later when I was working at that comic book store and he came to check our stand, I was (still am) very shy but I asked if I could take a picture with him... so yeah, please check the graphic novel (btw, you can call it "comic" or "comic book", it's perfectly okay. Only people like comic book guy from the Simpsons get offended if you don't call them "graphic novels").

RabidMango

I talked my older brother's friend into loaning the paperback to me when I was in Jr. High. I was so happy to have it. I took a fall rollerblading it back to his house and I still remember watching it slide across the pavement face down. I thought he'd hate me forever, but he was super cool about it. Odd memory that always stayed with me. I was a super cool kid, I know. :]

Raymond DeGraw

Great reaction... I've been hoping this movie would get a viewing. If anyone wants to get a good overview of the tragic events behind the death of Brandon Lee then check out an old episode of Unsolved Mysteries. I'll provide a link... https://youtu.be/37IlM2gYg7Y?si=4-P1ZOtWVYSvRbnR

Charles Clover

The hotdog guy was the Greek from the Wire. JUST noticed that.

John

Great catch, that would be a terrifying shared universe

Eric S

I'll always have love for this movie. Was just a kid when I first saw it. Dressed as Eric for Halloween. Anyway, the movie was changed because of Brandons death and for Hollywood. I deeply recommend checking out the original graphic novel. Way better than the movie.

FranciscoGios

Now that you watched The Crow, watch SPAWN (1997), it has the same idea. Also Johnny Mnemonic (1995) is a futuristic movie that is a favorite of mine with Keanu Reeves, the tittle is catchy I know I know.

DM DC

I love this movie. It's so beautiful. I love the heart that went intot his film. The 2nd one City of Angels, I didn't like it at all. It didn't have the same heart to it. Definitely just felt like a cash grab. The 3rd one I was alright though I suppose. Simone might be interested in the 4th one though. The Crow Wicked Prayer as it has David Boreanaz in it.

simon brouillard

Bai Ling in the second Crank movie is something special, both of those movies crank 1 and 2 are insane action movies

REDR58

“Devil’s Night,” around here we call it “Mischief Night” on the night before Halloween but it mostly involves throwing rolls of toilet paper into people’s trees or egging their cars.

Jared Winn

Never seen the movie until now, however I’ve seen it’s reach in many things. Especially in the wrestler Sting. Taken out by a rogue faction who’s sole purpose was to destroy WCW, until Sting returned clad in white face paint and black trench (formerly a surfer with bleach blonde buzz cut) and battled the faction. Made me start watching wrestling and I’ve been watching ever since. And btw, you have been putting out banger after banger after banger. Some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, but you guys have been on a hot streak of movie reactions. Keep it up!

Paul Schmitt

Love this movie. But damn it’s tragic. Eliza Hutton was Brandon Lee’s fianceé. Eliza was on set with Brandon frequently on The Crow. Towards the last few days of filming she had to return to California to prepare for her wedding to Brandon. I wouldn’t bother watching the 3 sequels.

Lou Gallucci

First time seeing this as an adult after avoiding it, so with no nostalgia going into it - it was better than I expected. My only criticism is that it didn't lean in to the camp like Sin City or others. At times it seemed like it was trying to take itself super seriously and it was too much of a whiplash from unintentional comedy... silly shit like the fire crow that no one else saw, and the gang members general behavior and then back to the dark serious brooding shit.

dieselbeast

Unsolved mysteries always did a great job with the way they told those stories and re-enactments, definitely worth a watch

8bitAndy

I knew he died close to wrapping on the movie, but I didn't realize it was literally 2 weeks until his wedding day. Tragic indeed.

MadCat

There is a remake of this movie being made with Bill Skarsgård as the lead. I had the luck to see them shoot here in Prague and it looked real dark and gritty.

Emptysea93

God I love this movie. It’s like every goth teens wet dream. I know this may sound like an odd recommendation after this movie, but because you mention you love camp, style, and when a movie goes balls to the wall with an aesthetic… I think you both NEED to react to Barbie. Completely different in tone, but just like the crow and mad max, it takes its aesthetic and turns it to 11

Will Moffett

I love when you guys react to a movie I haven't seen before. Especially when I don't have to torrent it haha It's funny you mentioned Entourage, because there's a funny part of an episode where Drama (Matt Dillon) is bragging about being "The Crow", and Turtle just says..."Yeah...he played the bird."

Will Moffett

I just realized Brandon Lee kinda looks like a buff version of Brandon Boyd, the lead singer of Incubus.

Hans Olav Sletnes

If you like The Crow, you need to watch Dark City, which is Alex Proyas' magnum opus imo. However, a word to the wise: the theatrical release includes an opening monologue that, unfortunately, gives away much of the film’s mystery prematurely. The director's cut gets rid of the voice over, but at the expense of a somewhat less polished pacing. My suggestion is to watch the theatrical version but take care to mute the initial voiceover. You can unmute the sound once you see a man opening a watch.

Keith Jones

"Is this the Bronze?" This is what BtVS would look like it had been on HBO.

Dax

Also just an FYI that the Eliza mentioned at the end of the movie was the fiancé of Brandon Lee when the movie was released.

Keerit Thind

A great mid-ranger with great style and gives 0 effs about ripping off other films is Doomsday (2008). An amazing over-the-top Mad Max/Escape from NY/Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves mishmash, It also turned out be fairly socially relevant. Go with the Unrated cut if you can find it.

brian burke

doomsday is good, commentary is amusing too, im a big fan of commentaries if they are done well

pinkdino99

Dark City is in this vein. So is Equilibrium (Christian Bale gun-fu)
