Ugh. Hard pass. I just discovered Chaplin is on YT for free. One of RDJ's best performances. I'll go back and watch that instead. Have fun. Edit - Watched your intro. Just to be clear, I have no idea what the controversy with the movie is. I just have zero interest in seeing it. Kind of like the Mario movie, it's just not interesting to me and I'm assuming it's overrated like most new films are. Few new films aren't terrible so the few that are average are elevated to a status they don't deserve IMO.

JoeySnowyNoey

Really enjoyed this movie! Really funny, and fun film. Please do Greta Grewig's other films because they are fantastic. Her version of Little Women has become a favorite movie of all time for me.

lumpycoal

oh man, the comments on here are going to really show us who among us patrons have ultra fragile masculinity. because unlike other movies they have no interest in and just ignore the post and move on, theyre going to go out of the way to tell us how much they dont want to watch this lol.

djKENTO

Looks like it’s time for a 2001 reaction. PLEASE! It’s a beautifully made film. Hypnotizing.

Amos T Fairchild

I dare say it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I had a fun time watching it even as a boomer male. lol.

Jon

why not wanting to watch bad movies is "ultra fragile masculinity" ? it's because it's about a woman ? 🤷🏻 what kind of "argument" is that

JoshG

I enjoyed watching this in theaters. I also have a HUGE man crush on Ryan Gosling. There’s two great movies of his you should check out called “The Nice Guys” and “Drive”. I think you guys would love both of them!

ChickensAreRacist

Stoked for this reaction. The wife and I enjoyed this movie a lot, and when she’s awake we’ll watch it for our 3rd time… but with you two!

Jusiu

I ken-not wait to see your reaction! Awesome movie.

Astraeos

Dang, when you guys said you were watching something super long yesterday after True Grit I got super excited for something epic. Oh well.

lumpycoal

i think they were talking about something else. if you look at the upload date of true grit, it says 5 days ago cause it was last weeks voted movie. this video was uploaded 11 days ago. lol so unless they were "going to watch a long movie we watched a week ago". theyre definitely talking about something else.

Prof. Writhms

Damn it. I didn’t see this one yet. I’m not a fan of first time watching a movie along with the first time reaction. I find myself trying to tell Simone and George, “Shut up! I can’t hear the movie!” lol Since you Cine-Peeps have seen all the John Wick movies, I must tell you not to sleep on “Nobody” (2021). It was written by Derek Kolstad (writer of the John Wick franchise) and the same John Wick stunt team (87Eleven) worked on it. “Nobody” was released during the pandemic so it didn’t get the audience it deserved. Are the movies in the same universe? Some speculate but there are no Easter eggs to prove so.

gobmob2000

I heard that apparently, that the reason they changed girls toys from the color blue to the color pink, is that they noticed their sales go up after the switch, and that girl have some evolutionary reason for liking pink. So I made a comment about it, that I have since deleted, but after I decided to look it up to see how truthful it really is, and apparently, with my admittedly 10 min of google, the answer is maybe, the evidence is week on this and we just don't really know. But the lesson, don't believe everything you hear and question everything :)

Tay Schumaker

Loved this more than I expected. Gosling is so good in this

redddfer44

I *love* Greta Gerwig and all that she's done here, but credit where credit is due: the movie was Margot Robbie's idea. She produced it and fought for it. Obviously the amazing script wasn't hers, but when asked how the hell did they get away with it, she said that they left everything in and basically wore the opposition down by demanding so much. (Robbie also produced "Birds of Prey" and "I, Tonya", both of which I really loved.) Re: past fashions. Syphilis used to be really common. I recently read an article on its influence on European society that said that the use of makeup got more common for men with the rise of syphilis because you wanted to cover up the pretty nasty symptoms.

Lola Lirola

The best Ryan Gosling for me is Lars and the Real Girl! Super weird, but really sweet movie, full of snow, perfect for a Canadian winter. If you describe it (Ryan Gosling falls in love with a sex doll) it sounds cringey and creepy, but I swear it's the sweetest most calm and kind movie.

Martin

Checks Amazon Prime rental price: $24.99. Uhhh yeah, I’ll circle back around to this reaction in a month or two.

Lola Lirola

Oh, yay!! Just yesterday we were saying we wanted it! Is... this what manifesting is??

Cincassette

"Crazy Stupid Love" and "La La Land" are also great Ryan Gosling movies!

Lola Lirola

Yeah, there are a lot of people finding a lot of "evolutionary" reasons that so very ~coincidentally~ reinforce how society is today so that we don't try and change it... For centuries, in the West, pink was a boy colour because it was considered a "childhood red", and red was for men because blood and hunting and manly things, so pink was also a manly colour. And blue was for girls because it was the colour of the Virgin Mary's veil (if you look at european art history, she's always in blue), to the point that Theodore Roosevelt's daughter Alice had a special shade of blue created for her: Alice Blue (which, fun computer trivia I found when trying to link the shade, is also one of the original 1987 X11 color names which became the basis for color description in web authoring!) Pink for women and girls is very very recent! And proof that all these traditions are just decisions we make.

JediLounger

I’ve seen this movie 4 times in a few weeks now. First time I watched it, I thought “Damn, Simone and George have not seen 2001 yet.”

Joe

Please, please do It Chapter 2. It's been so long since the first one.

Lola Lirola

Her version of Little Women is quite daring with the material and the changes she made. I absolutely loved it, it's made with guts, it doesn't fall into the 'period movie' asepticness. Great movie!

djKENTO

When the physical release is out it’ll drop to 15-20 bucks.

djKENTO

a year and two months andi t’s spooky season. Literally watched their reaction to the first chapter yesterday too. Really want them to see Bill Hader’s spot on performance.

Ricardo Alanis

This movie really surprised me in terms of where it went, how self-aware it was, the humor, and the last sequence always makes me tear up. Great reaction!

Persnickity

Everyone is Ken-ough. Be excellent to everyone.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Almost all reactions miss the her ghost has an office in the building joke...I wish they would have notice but they were laughing...which was almost the entire movie cause is that good

ChickensAreRacist

Ah George, I’m a dude so I think I can say this, and it’s lighthearted. Man, right after it ended, you mansplained so hard while the interesting credits were going by. Funny sh*t, man. But of course, we both very much enjoyed y’all’s reactions.

AstralCars

You should really watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s referenced in so many movies and it’ll help make Deep Space Homer make a lot more sense.

JDV

Too pricey to buy digitally. Sorry but there is no movie I'll ever drop $25 bucks on digitally when you don't really own it. Will be back when it's on HBO Max. Or just Max, I guess.

REDR58

Whatever “controversy” this movie has earned from certain quarters, it’s earned over $1.3 billion US worldwide. I bet the movie studios just love that kind of controversy. Also, watch The Lego movies!

Opti_Frog

It blows my mind that a movie as surreal and weird as this, amazing though it is, made $1,4B worldwide. This film was everything i hoped Everything Everywhere All at Once would be but wasn't. Absolutely bonkers in the best way possible.

Tyler Foster

She definitely produced it and fought for it, and she deserves credit not just for being a driving force behind the scenes, but also for thinking of Gerwig in her capacity as a producer as a perfect fit for the material, but I don't know if she deserves *more* credit than Gerwig. The film has been in development since 1995, and it's gone through various iterations, including an Amy Schumer version and an Anne Hathaway version, so there is more groundwork laid before Robbie enters the picture. Since Gerwig wrote the script with Noah Baumbach and directed, I think it's best to say that it was a perfect collaboration between Robbie as producer and Gerwig as co-writer/director.

W T

I, For no particular reason at all, wanted to put out a little refresher about James Gunn's recent movies and TV show. The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker in particular, GotG 3 was great as well.

sarCC

Yayyyyyy!!!

Alex Ch

For those hoping to stream or watch a physical copy, release dates haven’t been announced for either yet. Max’s October schedule has just been released, but there is a small chance it’s added to the schedule later after it’s IMAX run this week. Otherwise, November seems likely.

lumpycoal

is it mansplaining if hes just expressing his thoughts? i mean i guess so, hes a man, and hes explaining his thoughts.

Tyler Foster

Frances Ha is such a wonderful and funny movie. You guys should cover Gerwig's Little Women on the channel as well.

Monica Alarcon

Yaaay! I've been wanting an excuse to watch this again. Went to see it at the theater with a friend (of couse we wore pink) and had a great time, also I wanted to see it in english cause the theater only showed it dubbed... BTW. The movie where the ugly girl turns pretty because she takes off her glasses is called "She's All That" starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. It's been endlessly mocked since then...

Chase Schleich

I almost watched this a couple weeks ago, but held off. Had a feeling you guys would watch it soon. Glad I waited. Assuming I should hold off on Oppenheimer when it comes out too?

WastedPo

There are actually a TON of movies and TV shows which use the trope of a girl losing her glasses as part of a makeover. The Princess Diaries. She's Out of Control. I think there's even a Brady Bunch episode that incorporates it. (In fairness, there are also a number of stories which involve a guy suddenly looking cooler and more handsome when he takes off his glasses as well. I guess glasses just aren't considered attractive by movies.)

ChickensAreRacist

After seeing this in the theater the first time, I had to google ‘what’s that song in Barbie sung in falsetto’ and was so surprised it’s Billie Eilish. An instant classic. And it’s in all the parts one can get tears in.

Middy

I'm glad you brought up the so-called controversy afterwards and appeared to come to the conclusion it doesn't really exist. There's actually a review on Letterboxd calling this movie "dangerous" and it just made me think... okay, if you feel this movie is threatening towards men, then you're halfway to getting the point. Even if Barbie is balanced more in the favour of women, it's just holding up a mirror to all the other movies out there that lean the complete opposite way without anybody ever questioning it. The only truly worrying thought is that those movies are still more true to real life than this one. Barbie Land was saved, but we're not there yet.

gobmob2000

What other movies that lean the other way? Unless you go back 50+ years, I genuinely don't know any well known movies that go the other way. Its also not just a little the other way, its a lot the other way, for example, unlike what the movie portrait, half of the board of directors of Mattel are women, and as far as I can tell, the leader of the barbie division has always been a women, so the movie lied. Also, some of the female empowerment messages are questionable, the film literally said women are easily brainwashed and made subservient to men, and that they "liked" it. Is that really a good message? I don't know, maybe I just did not get it, but it felt very heavy handed and with very little nuance and somewhat whiny.

Monica Alarcon

Simone is all of us, most women at least. She cried in the same parts I cried when I watched it and I had the same face during America Ferrera's monologue... so good.

ChickensAreRacist

This movie was knowingly subject to its own message. That to get men to notice the idea of the patriarchy we all see abused in the most powerful positions, it had to make them mad at the opposite… and hopefully just catch themselves and realize that. It’s all in America Ferrera’s speech. But despite the men who didn’t catch that, the movie was still compelled to cater to them in a clear degree. And thankfully, it did it with humor and heart.

Orphan Crippler

Never thought id hear the words "before we start the movie I just want to address the controversy" in a movie about Barbie dolls, but shit times are changing I guess.

Brian's Dog

Kentastic reaction everyone. Sublime! I hope to catch the rest of Barbenheimer with you.

Lola Lirola

Allan is the best. Justin Timberlake from NSYNC f*cking wishes he was an Allan. He is totally a mink-wearing Ken.

Will Moffett

I wonder how many girls in the theatre understood the 2001 A Space Odyssey intro haha

lumpycoal

lol kind of an ironic statement. i bet those girls could use a man like you to explain it to them.

Johnny Liu

Simone is a fellow Frances Ha fan! It is a top ten for movie since Frances reminds me of so many people I knew in college. Also Simone, have you seen Mistress America? Similar vibes and it is also Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

Will Moffett

Ryan Gosling deserves and Oscar for this performance. He was fantastic! They all were.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Great job guys...I love this movie and loved your reactions... Im happy Simone has seen Frances Ha...that is also one of my favs..I've been requesting not realizing you had seen it... Greta Gerwig is def one of the top Directors and Writers in my estimation

Chase Schleich

Nolan doesn't want his films coming to home release or streaming until as late as possible. He feels that his films are made for theaters, not for TV's (and especially phones) so he keeps them in theaters longer so as many people as possible get to see it in it's intended form. The reason Nolan left Warner Bros. was because they pushed his last film (Tenet) into streaming so quickly (during the pandemic when they put all their new releases directly onto HBOMax in an attempt to push the service). Most films have a 60-90 day theater to home release window, but not Nolan films. Under his agreement with Universal (who he now works with instead of Warner Bros.) all of his films will have a 120 day minimum theater exclusivity run, which means Oppenheimer won't be out on home video until mid-late November at the earliest and even then it won't be streaming, only rent/own through physical or digital. I doubt we see Oppenheimer on a streaming service until sometime in 2024.

Tiffany T

Simone is literally me, I've seen this movie four times now and I always sob through the video montage part

Princess Mia

This was such an amazing and and refreshing reaction to this movie! I also sob through most of it whenever I rewatch it so dw Simone im right there with you (esp the moment where she calls the old lady beautiful oh my god)

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

Since Ryan Gosling is in this, and he is not the pointiest fork in the drawer, I have to recommend that you watch The Nice Guys (2016).

Logan Kerlee

Really enjoyed watching this with you both! Great movie for sure. I watched this before the reaction and liked it solo as well. Always fun to see your takes on things! :)

Gary Fixler

Wow, Rhea Perlman (Ruth). She's Danny Devito's wife, and old people like me know her as as Carla Tortelli, the wise cracking waitress on Cheers for 11 seasons.

Gary Fixler

George mentioned not knowing Toy Story, so now it's time to watch the first 3, so you can get to Ken and Barbie in the 3rd one.

Mati D.

First time watching it, and i loved this movie, didn't expect it at all.

Philipp Roensch

Excited for this reaction, will have to be patient for a VOD sale or January when the disc comes out. Until then, I trust you had fun and hope not too many issues with men not getting feminism.^^ This movie is more clever than a toy movie has any right to and I loved it in theaters.

IncredibleBulk

for georges question, i dont think id be into tunics or anything like that, i wouldn't like that much freedom down there, far prefer having them wrapped and under control

Jared Winn

Blown away. No words. It was so good.

Tyler Foster

It will be cheaper to rent/buy digitally when the movie is also released physically, which should be in less than a week on October 3rd.

Tyler Foster

No idea why Warner hasn't officially stated as much, but GRUV (an online retailer run by a group of studios that includes WB and Universal) has ads all over facebook saying the movie is coming out on physical media in less than a week on October 3rd (in the US).

Tyler Foster

The disc should be out in less than a week on October 3rd, not January. Lots of retailers still have the February placeholder date up, but even if it gets pushed a little, it's definitely coming before Christmas.

redddfer44

The Magic Ring Ken is a pretty neat detail that my friend let me in on. Somewhere around the early 90s or so, Mattel wanted to make Ken cooler. So their people went to raves to see what's cool. They say that young, attractive, stylish men wore plastic rings on their clothing. So that came the Magic Ring Ken. What they missed was that those rings were cock rings. Dan Savage's column "Ken Comes Out" from 1993 goes into some detail about it.

TokyoLopez

I WANNA PUSH YOU AROUND, WELL I WILL, WELL I WILL

Leo K

I honestly tried, but this is so heavy-handed that I couldn't make it over 45 minutes into the movie, even watching with you 2 :(

Andrew Howard

I had to go back and re-watch your reactions to the final Ken musical number. That part was so great, and it's made all the better with at least one of yall losing it every other line. This movie was a big crazy ride, and I enjoyed just being along for all of it.

MacGuffinStuff

I finally gave in and bought the movie so I could watch it with youz twoz, and it lived up to the hype in my opinion. I really loved this. I had already seen America Ferrara's "rant", hey I can't lie, I've seen it too, she's not lying. But apart from it being a fruitful ground for reflection and introspection, it was also super fun. It's one I'll watch a lot more, and not just because I paid 25 bucks for it 😆

China Andronicus

The big dance break in the middle of 'I'm Just Ken' is a tribute to the dream sequence dance in 'Singin' in the Rain'. Executives wanted it cut but Gerwig was adamant and thank God, they let her keep it. It's so damn good. Ken is very much an accessory. If you look in the Barbie aisle at the store, almost every Ken is in swim trunks or shorts and a t-shirt, hence the beach reference in this film. Allan was like Midge and didn't last long until they both resurfaced, first in a wedding set with Barbie and Ken as their wedding party, then with pregnant Midge and Allan as the daddy. That was basically it for them. As always, you're both far more observant than most people and picked up on Ken being sad rather than labelling him the villain of the film as most people seem to do.

Aaron Gunstone

Later to the party, but what a superlative film! Absolutely nailed it.

Odd Thomas

Frances Ha is good but I always preferred Mistress America. That is THE Greta Gerwig movie for me. More people need to see it.

Amelie W

Here we are thinking complicated and difficult thoughts about the patriarchy and shriveling in fear over the idea Ken is actually just holding up a perfect mirror to our world showing us how it looks when women are treated with no respect, and then he puts on a second pair of sunglasses.

Jesse Coombs

I hope they watch "Singing in the Rain" someday. One of my favorite movies of all time.

James Melton

I put off watching this for quite a while. But Billie Eilish finally caused me to watch it. I love her music and wow she did not disappoint here. Seeing the film is worth it purely for the scene with her song IMO.

James Melton

George, I'm a little worried that you missed the point of the speech about the impossibility of meeting western cultural standards for women. It's not about applying this to any situation. It's about the specific problem of gender power in our culture. I feel like it's important not to lose track of that real problem.

Raven Dark

By now, a bunch of people have probably already told you guys this, but I don't see it in the comments, so I thought I'd bring it up. The character of Ruth Hanlon in the movie is based off the real Ruth Hanlon, who is the creator of Barbie. Ruth, in the movie, mentioned she had an issue with the IRS over taxes. This is a play off the fact that the real Ruth Hanlon got into some trouble over her taxes in real life, though I don't remember what the problem was. She also said she named Barbie after her daughter Barbra. The real Ruth Hanlon has a daughter named Barbra, and there are documentaries that talk about how a lot of what she did with Barbie are in homage to her daughter. I could have sworn I left a comment after I watched this reaction when it first went up, but it doesn't look like I did. Great reaction, guys. I'm so happy you two got such a huge kick out of it. What fun.
