Hailee Steinfeld is incredible in this, and if I’m not mistaken it was her first movie. Easy to see why she’s become a star.

I adore this movie. Makes me really emotional at the end, they do such a great job of showing each of the three's own version of True Grit. Mattie is naive but irrepressibly so and refuses to let her youth be used against her. La Beouf is a braggart and egotistical and also the only person who could have made that shot. Takes a rock to the head and still shows up, ever stalwart, to help his rival save the girl. And then there's Rooster, an old, overweight drunk well past his prime doing anything he can to get Mattie to safety. Never any doubt in any of their minds when the chips are down. It's incredibly moving.

Please do the Cohen Brother's brilliant crime drama--"Miller's Crossing".

Yay! Hailee Steinfel! Now you can watch Bumblebee and The Edge Of Seventeen. Also, she's the voice of Spider-Gwen.

Hailee Steinfeld was so powerful in this. I read the book in anticipation of this coming to theaters and I even thought that role was impossible to do justice to onscreen. But I was wrong. She commanded excellence and more than kept up with her elders. Such a strong movie all around.

Jared Jemison

An absolute masterpiece from the Cohen brothers. Beautiful remake and incredible dialog.

I got so excited when I heard you guys were watching this. It's such a unique movie. Probably my favorite depiction of the old west along with Unforgiven. If you are feeling like another western that is one of the best.

Andrew

You guys should check out the movie "Hell Or High Water" with Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, and the legendary Ben Foster. It's a great neo-western film.

21:17 She fell in the water. Got the rest of her bullets wet. I'm not a gun expert but I'm pretty sure 1870's bullets didn't respond too well to being dunked. The snake stuff is all just old superstition. I have no idea on the origin of the rope thing and "sucking out the poison" A) doesn't and B) has a chance of causing the other person to suffer effects of the venom.

Rachel…I too LOVE this movie. But I think it was too “smart” for people then; not sure it fares better now.

I'll be the first to express appreciation of the thumbnail. (I hope they don't mind my revealing that this wasn't a photoshop but a cosplay.)

I remember working at a theatre when this came out and everyone was shocked that it turned out to be a minor hit. Such a great movie.

This movie is one of the few remakes that i enjoy more than the original. John Waynes portrayal of Rooster was much more like a campy version of an old grumpy cowboy while Jeff Bridges version is a believable old drunk that has just had a hard and rough life who will kill at the drop of a hat. Matt damon is so much better than Glen Campbell , he plays a great Texas Ranger im suprised he hasnt done any more westerns.

This has my vote, its somewhat overlooked by lots of reactors that would love it if given a chance. Hopefully the see this comment and add it to a poll

Tossing my vote in for The Quick and The Dead for whenever you decide to revisit this genre next.

I love the poison-sucking scene in this movie, because it shows the actual realistic consequence: THAT is why she lost her arm! "Sucking out the venom" is a widely-held myth, but it has never been helpful in any way. Not even in "the old days" before they had modern medicine. The venom is into the bloodstream as soon as your heart takes a single beat after you are bitten, so even if you could suck it out (Which you can't) it would already be too late. What would happen if you tried it is that putting your mouth on the open wound would introduce bacteria and lead to an infection in the victim. THAT would have more chance of being fatal than the venom ever did. Most snakebites on humans are non-lethal in and of themselves, as they are intended to hunt much smaller prey. They will make you sick and infirm, and you MIGHT die, but the odds are better-than-even that you'll survive even without modern medicine provided you receive care such as shelter and food. I am excepting, of course, those few snakes which do produce human-lethal venom, which you are unlikely to encounter in the western United States. It was Rooster's efforts to help her -- which he meant in all good faith -- that truly endangered her life due to the subsequent infection. It is that infection which resulted in the need to amputate her arm to prevent her death.

I can add that the best way to avoid being bitten by a venomous snake is to leave them alone. They have zero interest in biting you and will only do so if they feel threatened. A study that I read about that was done in the US showed that 99% of venomous snake bites occurred when a person was actively doing something to the snake at the time of the bite (catching, killing, or playing with the snake). The other 1% were accidental interactions, such as stepping on or near a snake. 0% were from people being attacked by venomous snakes - because they don't attack people as there's literally nothing to gain in it for them.

Sucking out venom. It is a myth of a very simple origin. Not all the bites of venomous snakes are actually venomous. Sometimes snake simply bites you without trying to kill. People tried to suck out the venom out of the blood. And there was none. So they were sure that it works. In fact it has no real effect. But it was proven only in the second half of the 20th century. Ropes against snakes - pure superstition. Snakes can cross the rope. But that was the thing at the time. Snakes generally do not want to go to human sleeping place because thay have nothing to do there. LaBoef and Rooster are both Сonfederates. But LaBoef was serving in classical military unit while Rooster was one of Quantrill's Raiders who were acting guerrilla style. They were attacking towns and farms. They were killing men, stealing horses, etc. That's why they were considered as outlaws by Union and some of Confederates (LaBoef included). On the other hand LaBoef was in Shreveport under command of Kirby Smith. The only major event for that army there was their surrender. The whole movie is the story about price which we need to pay for our wishes to be granted. Every decision heroes are making is leading to consequences. Chaney is killing man and stealing gold but facing Cogburn LaBoef and a girl to track him as a payoff. Girl gets her vengeance but the very shot she makes throws her to the cave with snakes. And so on. Because there is nothing free except the Grace of God.

This thumbnail gets my top vote for “new looks both Simone and George should adopt, post haste!”

I said this before they reacted to it, but this version is also an incredibly note-perfect adaptation of the original novel. They took so much of Mattie's dialogue from the book word-for-word, including lifting some stuff that was prose there and repurposing it as dialogue (if I'm remembering correctly, her line about how her mom "could hardly spell 'cat'" is an example).

John_rd

The original is better and it has that girl from the star trek tos episode 'Miri' playing Maddie Ross. She's great in it. John wayne won an Oscar for it too.
