Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

I understand why people hate Skyler(you'll find out later), but I never hated her...her character was not meant to be hated but a consequence of everything that happened within the show and why she acted like that

Vig

I love Tuesdays now!

Pam Nail

I have very similar feelings about Marie, and while I recall that I warmed to her eventually when I originally watched the show ... it took a WHILE. She had a fairly nice moment with Skyler in "Breakage," but you're right, it took *so much* for her to even just apologize that it's difficult for me to appreciate it.

Jeff K

Yeah, I never fully understood the vitriol, which - as I’m sure George and Simone probably are not aware - got so bad that actress, Anna Gunn, ended up writing an op-ed addressing it. The hate was totally unfair since it was spilling over into real life a bit, obviously. But also… step back and look at things from her character’s perspective. She’s of course going to be suspicious of Walt’s behavior and he puts her through an awful lot.

BangDroid

omg I've been fiending these reactions like a meth addiction!

Haye Zeus

The hate for Skyler is just straight up misogyny. I know that’s the “woke” answer for some people but that’s basically it. She doesn’t do anything more egregious than everyone else that deserves the hate more than other characters. Yes, without giving spoilers, something happens later on that does add to people’s frustration with the character. But I always took it as part of her character flaw, which everyone in this show has. People do some fucked up shit in this show. Everyone breaks bad. Which I think is the point. And I love Anna Gunn. I think she’s the true MVP of the show. As much as Bryan Cranston atleast.

Charlotte Drolet

I have never understood why people hate Skyler. It's like they expect her not to be human. I think it's people who expect her to be dumb and obedient. I cannot wait until you have watched the whole show. I am curious about your final opinion on everyone.

Jobbe Smit

Debt stops if you decline an inheritance. In the case of Walt he's married so his wife will be on the hook regardless. But if say it's a parent or a brother you can decline the entire inheritance and you will get nothing from them, not even the photos you share.

Jeff K

I realize this is not remotely a hot take, but, this just in: Aaron Paul is such a fucking great actor.

China Andronicus

Unfortunately a lot of actors get typecast and can't shake a certain character. After doing 'Psycho', Anthony Perkins wound up playing the same part for most of his remaining career, despite how talented he was. We still see it today with so many actors. It's probably why Joffrey's actor dropped out of the business. There's no real fun in playing one role your whole life if everyone hates you for it.

Jeff K

Also George, yes: El Paso is on the border, directly across from Juarez. Juarez is one of the most notorious centers for drug trafficking/cartels in the world, so El Paso is... a lot of action, in theory, for Hank/the DEA. Also, regarding Hank: I forgot just how early on in the series he shifted from a blowhard and kind of a jerk, to lovable and sympathetic. Such a great character and performance.

Jobbe Smit

1:40:35 is the best part, purring

JediLounger

The last time you guys were in the El Paso area was Sicario, when they ran the operation to go over the border to get the drug lord. As Jeff says, across the border from that area of Texas is Juarez, and there is a lot of action on both sides of the border in that area, be it drugs or immigration. I’ve lived in Texas my entire life, and even on the coast or in Central Texas we hear about it on a regular basis.

Dioskur

"I can't imagine any of them standing up to a cartell!" "I can't imagine Badger standing up to his mom!" Quite sure we don't know the moms power level. I know some moms that would crush a medium sized cartell just to get to the front of the line at a buffet

Jeff K

Yep. I don't know if it still is, but at one point Juarez was considered the murder capital of the entire world. So, y'know... not the safest area for Hank to be working. My best friend from HS (I grew up in New England but live in Texas now) worked as a border patrol agent for a few years (he's moved up the ranks into immigration/Homeland Security; he loves the movie The Proposal with Sandy Bullock and Ryan Reynolds because the immigration dude in that does basically his exact job so he loves the representation on the big screen... haha) down around McAllen, which is the other end of the southern border by the Gulf of Mexico, but even there he said there were times he got shot at by drug smugglers. That happens all up and down the border, but Juarez is by far the most notorious spot.

MR

The guy who played Joffrey Baratheon didn't quit because of hate he got, but never wanted a career in acting in the first place and went on to study philosophy. However he has returned to some small scale theatre acting.

Steve H

Sounds like you & Simone are catching on, to what's happening. on this show.

Gary Fixler

The idea - and I don't know if there's data to back it up - is that if you drive with both feet, and an emergency pops up, like a kid or animal runs in front of you, or a car cuts you off, then in a panic, you might tense up and push both pedals, or push the wrong one in confusion (which some people already do in that situation - just slamming down the accelerator). Also, resting your left foot on the brake while driving, even lightly, can cause the brake lights to stay on all the time, meaning people can't tell when you're actually braking. A light press while resting could engage the brakes slightly, too, which can heat up and wear out the brakes.

Tenn Seven

Debt doesn't get passed to anyone when you die, unless someone else shared responsibility for it. Your estate is responsible for paying any unsecured debt before anyone inherits (and will forfeit property for any secured debt if arrangements aren't made). If the estate doesn't have enough to cover your debt then any debt beyond what your estate can pay for is wiped out. This is generally true for most (if not all) states, but the particulars and fine points will vary from state to state.

King_Panarisi

The main reason the right foot is for the brake and the gas pedal is because in most places in the world people drive manual cars and the left foot is for the clutch.

Joe

POSSIBLE SPOILERS. People who hate Skylar are ridiculous, unable to side with anyone other than Walt, despite everything, simply because he's the main character. Also, there was some straight up sexism going on too. Female characters often experience far more unwarranted criticism & negativity, even the really well written ones. Anna Gunn was fantastic.

E. D.

I´m like maybe I don´t watch next week so I can watch FOUR episodes in a row the following week xD

michael clarke

people hate skylar because the show is a power fantasy for men that feel trapped. they see her as the only impediment, just like how they view their own wives. like the comment above me, its just straight up misogyny. hating skylar should be a red flag.

Śéáń

Yeah the Skylar hate was always bizarre to me. Everyone has flaws in the show, but the fans *h a t e d* her. There was a thing back in the day called "the AMC Wife", where a lot of the AMC shows had the fans disliking the main character's wife (Mad Men and I think Walking Dead were included) Obviously some people will like some characters and dislike others, but I never saw anything from Skylar, certainly not in what has been seen in this watchalong so far, that could generate the intense anti-fandom that was there.

Who Are These People

Some people admire Walt and think Walt is the hero, so she seems like the villain. They don't realize that Walt is the villain and Skylar is the one actually fighting for her family (mostly).

Reid Mclellan

Oh, how privileged I was to have forgotten the brain rotting pro and anti Skyler arguments this show ignites that I'm gonna have to basically re read now in these comments. There are so many interesting and diverse conversations that arise from this awesome show and people get stuck on hating on and Staning for skyler it's so infuriating. For the record, I don't hate skyler and there are some hateful arguments against her but I'd be lying if I said both sides don't say some things that make me wanna sink into the floor from cringe.

Doug the Movie Guy

Honestly, Skyler is ALSO a bad person. The way people describe "hating on Skyler" as sexist sounds like tumblr when you can't actually win the argument. Walt isn't the hero but neither is Skyler! BOTH CAN BE TERRIBLE PEOPLE. You can write an essay on how badly she treats Walt in the first few episodes but let's take an easy example right here. Skyler is manipulative and selfish. Walt is lying to her. What does she do? Act like a child to punish him. She is actively making his life hell (the guy who she knows has cancer and is dying) because she wants to force him to tell her the truth. She even goes so far as to buy cigarettes then flush them down the toilet where she KNOWS he will find them. They're going to get stuck and Walt spends enough time with his head down the toilet that he will find them. She bought them so he would find out. Then she gets to be the "victim" and she does it to show how his actions will hurt their baby. That's the selfish and manipulative side. She's not acting like an adult, she's not trying to be understanding to get Walt to trust her and be open. No. it's all punishment. Tell me your secrets or I hurt the baby. No reaching out, no olive branch, no negotiation, it's all suffer until I get what I want. Walt isn't the hero, but Skyler is also a pretty bad person. Jesse is the good person.

Mitchell Bowker

I think her character starts changing after this - the writers make her more like the actress Betsy Brandt who apparently is just the nicest person!

Haye Zeus

Well blame Simone since she’s the one who brought it up in the first place on the video. Damn it Simone, always stirring up controversy. :P

Who Are These People

Jesse destroys everyone he comes in contact with, dragging them down so he doesn't feel like the lowest person around. He even hid his younger brother's drug problem so he could feel smug about that too. Jesse is a very bad person.

Who Are These People

Yeah, I don't know why I do it. Fans who like Jesse scour the episodes looking for ways to blame everyone else in the show for for Jesse's problems. Like how George said his parents kicking him out of *their* house for his drug activity is "scummy" of them. Poor Simone having to try to reason with him by reminding him that wasn't the first time he tried to take advantage of them and that meth is illegal for a reason. And no, George, "we" don't all "love" Jesse, he is completely despicable. Viewers of the whole show know he only continues to do that same thing. In terms of character arc, Walt has a downward character development, he starts good and "breaks bad". Jesse, in fact, has no character arc at all. He starts bad and ends up the same as he began.

Reid Mclellan

Ok let's all discuss driving with one vs two feet everyone Allright? Nothing else. Sound good?

JoeySnowyNoey

I feel like I've met countless people in my hometown who are like Marie. Lol

Aaron M

I'm with George on Marie. So obnoxious.

Elder Lyons

mate i think you are so ready to have this argument with anyone that you've misheard George's meaning just so you can say your rebuttal to an opinion he didnt give. hes saying it sucks while jesse got kicked out, he understands why. the whole ending of the video is just the 2 of them agreeing with eachother that it sucks but its reasonable. but i think you mistook his meaning cause youre all fired up to type all that out, so fired up that you even took his "we love jesse" literally. obviously not literally everyone loves him, its impossible and theres no way anyone can claim one way or another. maybe take a deep breath and realize its just an on the spot discussion they're having minutes after watching 2 episodes of a show they havent seen. theyre not where youre at, with the context of the rest of the show, the movie, and possibly multiple rewatches and time to consider everything for years.

E. D.

I think the reaction time is a bit too long compared to 2 feet and the foot could slip away or something like that. Normally ppl have two feet so it makes sense to use both, I guess.

E. D.

Yeah, but to be fair it feels like all actors (no matter how small role they have) are made for their roles, their appearance and acting.. seems like the casting department did a great job.

Pasemi

no marie does not "grow on you"

Shane Driscoll

If Walt really cared about the cigarettes harming the baby, he would have confronted Skyler as soon as he found them. Instead, he held onto them so he could wave them in her face if she ever mouthed off to him.

E. D.

The actor Iwan Rheon played an equally bad character if not worse and some thought he won´t find any job after that role but he´s still around, he seems doing well.

JoeySnowyNoey

I felt myself hating Skylar when I first watched the show but then later caught myself and thought "wait she's right, she has every reason to be upset". Lol but I agree especially by the end of the show if you still hate her I think that's an issue with yourself.

Travis H

As others stated the hatred for Skyler online while the show was airing was enormous (and VERY gross)! It was mainly from men who saw Walt as a good guy and they wanted him to become this massive drug lord. It was like a power fantasy for a lot of them and they viewed Skyler as his biggest threat from power. She was just the “nagging wife” who slowed him down from getting what he wanted so they would constantly post absolute vitriol about both the character and the actress. According to Anna Gunn there were threats to her and it made her time on the show difficult. I will also add that not all Skyler hate was toxic, but the majority of it was and it overshadowed most actual complaints. It also made talking about the show online really difficult. Thankfully a lot of the hate for her has dropped once the show ended, and more people look at her more positively than they did when it aired.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yeah I don't understand why people would treat an actor badly for portraying even a really bad character, really well, that's so bizarre. Lena Headey also caught a lot of hell from people for Cersei but she took it as a compliment. Anna Gunn was great in Deadwood so I never had a problem differentiating her from Skyler as a character, not that I would anyway lol, she's an actor. I will say I wasn't happy with some of Skyler's choices and actions, mostly later in the show, but that's what makes this show so great, like Game of Thrones, these characters are not two dimensional. Throughout the series you'll see many sides to people, including Marie, even Badger and the other "walking testicles" lol. God I love this show, excited for every Tuesday, and I can't believe we all used to have to wait so long between episodes and seasons, you guys are watching two episodes a week and I still find myself getting impatient for the next one! We still have a long way to go.

Jomero

I..... don't remember ever "coming around" on Marie. Sorry George.

Burdensome

I doubt Marie will grow on you but I do think she was correct in her approach to Hank in that moment

Tim T—

Funnily enough, the more George hates Marie, the more protective I become of her. Maybe because I remember the Skylar hate and now overcompensate. But everyone on that show is a broken person, just in different ways.

Patrick

Since they are married, Skylar would most likely still be responsible for the medical bill even after he passes if I'm not mistaken. America's health care system is a total racket. The #1 cause of bankruptcy in America is from outstanding medical bills. Capitalism > Morality When my dad died, he owed over 250k to the IRS and in outstanding medical bills... but since my parents were divorced, my mom didn't get stuck with his debt.

Felreign

You guys should consider watching The prince of egypt from Dreamworks, if you haven't already seen it. Amazing film

Kinky

I love Marie and all her flaws, they're just so human and entertaining to watch for me, same as the rest of the cast.

PIG

I CAN NOT WAIT for when Simone sees who Jane's father is lol

HeyHeyJK

Oh, sure, go ahead and watch BB season 2 while leaving poor, sweet Ted Lasso just hanging ... along with those of us who are desperately waiting for you to get back to him. You Canadians are so cold-hearted. ;-)

bloosmoke

ted lasso never had a chance when all-star breaking bad showed up :( I do like both shows though

Khan1001

Yes! shame George will have no idea though, just us ....... fans, nearly spoiled it!

Molybdene

LOVED the end. Because of the cat. "I want you to handle it." purrrrs

redddfer44

Please, everyone go read the "Be Excellent to Each Other" post again. Re: Jesse's parents: loving someone who keeps breaking your trust on the regular for years is heartbreaking. And draining. I totally get why they want to draw the line. There's only so much you can do for another person. Granted, looking at their two sons, I'd say they haven't been the best of parents, but from their perspective, they're probably trying to fix their mistakes now. Besides, raising a kid isn't as easy as making clearly defined choices with foreseeable consequences unto a piece of clay with no will of their own.

BangDroid

Oh man... I feel like Bubbles from the wire... itching for ep 6&7

BangDroid

Walt is the main protagonist, the show sets you up to root for him and naturally Skyler inherits some characteristics of antagonism. For me, I originally disliked Skyler for what turned out to be transferred resentment I had towards a member of my own family. Only after working through that, and having watched this show through completion probably 9 or 10 times now, I realized this.

Chase Lonnergan

As far as the Skylar hate goes... I think I have a unique perspective among those I have discussed it with... I totally hate Skylar. I also hate Walt. And Jesse. In fact, with the exception of Walter Jr., Hank, and Hank's partner... I find every character on this show utterly loathsome. For different reasons, of course. 90% of the characters in this show are absolute garbage-tier humans... But isn't that the point?

Justin Leone

I've seen this episode several times, and this is the first time I ever noticed that Jesse's response to "I want you to handle it" is to start purring loudly. A bold acting choice from Aaron Paul, but I sort of like it.

LaserLamb

Do you hate Vince Gilligan too? Is he your dad & he made you watch the show?

Chase Lonnergan

Are you somehow under the impression that any of these characters are, in any way, good people? This is a show about shitty human beings.

Richard Flores

I'm so glad this was the first thing I read before I saw the reaction. 'Cause at first glance, yeah, confusion, and then during the reaction I'm laughing my actual ass off. Thank you, Justin.

Deadly Ramon

From Episode 4, my favorite Breaking Bad scene of all time is the brief music conversation at the family table. The Cinebinge hosts aren't familiar with Steely Dan or Boz Scaggs, which is a deficiency they should rectify immediately. I recommend that they look up "Do It Again" by Steely Dan and "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs for an introduction to those artists' music.

Crew Glove

The idea is that using one foot in an automatic car creates the habit required when driving a manual one. In a manual one your left foot is always on the clutch pedal while the right one switches between the gas and the brakes, as the situation requires. So learning to drive an automatic with one foot will be useful if you have to use a manual one later.

Thomas Yanez

I love that you guys immediately thought he was having a panic attack. Most reactors think he's having a heart attack. Good job, y'all!

Raven Dark

This is my first watch of this show, and I'm loving it, and your reactions. These are fantastic, guys. I know Marie is annoying, but I think they're setting her up as someone who's going to eventually going to help Walter. I think that's why she's the wife of a cop, so she can be the person who helps keep the cops off his back. I know, I'm probably wrong, but I keep feeling that way. It would make sense why she's so antagonistic with her husband, so it will make sense when she has to lie to him and do things behind his back to help Walter in his business.

Thall

I love Skyler so much, because she shows how many people have double standards. Many reactors have no issue with Walt having secrets, going out for hours on end without telling her where he goes. The SECOND she turns it around and does the same to him, she is labeled a 'bitch' by many.
