This s the one film where Alison William's wooden acting was a plus to her role.

All the black cars with the white guys as drivers

Like you said at the beginning, people were so surprised at the time when comedian Jordan Peele did the hard pivot to game-changing horror/thriller/suspense overnight. But I saw someone explain why it worked so perfectly: Comedy is ALREADY written and acted in the same way as horror, but just given a payoff or perspective that transforms it from scary into funny. If you remove the payoff or change the perspective, the same thing that was funny is now scary. They example video they worked with was "Aerobics Meltdown" from Key & Peele. They did a step-by-step breakdown, but it came down to how the tension kept mounting, how the performances became tense and manic, and how the information revealed throughout the sketch kept making things seem darker and malevolent. (The sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k-Dd71CqnM&t=65s) It shed a whole new light on everything for me.

One thing I really like about this movie is that it addresses a facet of racism that is often ignored: fetishization. The Armitages and their "customers" covet and desire black bodies while still thinking themselves superior to black people and disregarding their humanity.

Regarding TSA, You should see key and peele Al Qaida meeting

Gishgali

This film is rewarding to rewatch because there is so much symbolism and subtext. For instance, Chris literally saves himself by picking cotton.

Such an utterly horrific premise. So messed up, brilliant movie.

Dazzler & Em

Glad that you enjoyed and were surprised by the film. Jordan Peele has quickly established himself as a great storyteller. This film really ratchets up the tension. The acting is also superb. Us and Nope are very different experiences from each other but are top class films. Hope you can watch them soon. You are also both getting very good at guessing plot lines and twists.

Middy

I don't know why anybody was surprised. Key & Peele has loads of skits that reference horror movies and tropes, they were funny, but also incredibly well shot and genuinely unsettling. I was hoping they'd both go into horror after seeing those.

Get Out should have won Best Picture. Best movie of that year IMHO.

I do not like the screenplay of the movie. I mean idea is cool and it is well done and actors are great and it is definitely worth to watch. And it is one of the best horror movies of the decade. And it is insane how it is possible to make an outstanding movie for such fistful of money. But as for me it is so predictable. I mean Neurosurgeon + hypnotherapist + weird help + horror. What else could it be aside from hypnosis + brain surgery? And who brought him to this wonderful house - girlfriend. So she's in it without doubts. Only transplantation was kinda unexpected. And it has tons of logical problems besides the issue of flashes. Why they not restraining him from the very first minute? Why to explain something to the victim? Is it a good idea to steal people that way? Why the personality of the victim remains at all after the surgery? Where is all the testing for compatibility for transplantation? Almost any interaction with the authorities (medics, police, firefighters) and most probably their secret is gonna be out. Not all the questions could be answered: it is for the sake of the horror genre. Basically taking a blood against will or discovering of a small cemetery of victims of failed surgeries could be very well. So it deserves an Oscar but I think not for the screenplay.

It makes me SO HAPPY to hear, "Oh, hey, Stephen Root!" I've been a big fan of his ever since Newsradio (late 90's sitcom starring Dave Foley of the Kids in the Hall and Phil Hartman, who you may know from such roles as Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure - but Root was just effortlessly funnier than both of them.)

Joe Williams

Gets mentioned a lot but I love the subversion of the cops showing up. Would bring relief in most horror films, but I remember how my stomach just sank in the theater when I saw the flashing lights.

David Butler

And now, if you haven't already, you need to watch Being John Malkovitch. Something of a... companion piece to this film, and also features Catherine Keener.

I saw Being John Malkovich when it first came out when I was a kid, and probably 10 times since, it's such a trip of a movie. I don't see Get Out as original like so many others do and takes away from the experience a bit. Similarly, I can imagine people seeing BJM now after Get Out, knowing there's a connection, will not experience the same impact.
