I'm loath to suggest yet ANOTHER Spielberg WW-2 movie, but have you considered Empire of the Sun? Yeah, it's still QUITE Eurocentric, but it may the closest Spielberg came to telling an Asia based tale about WW-2.

A stupidly heavy movie, Robin Williams as the story goes called in every day to give the crew a pep talk. He was nearby recording Aladdin. George I think your dad would really appreciate La vita è bella, given the father and son angle of the movie.

I gotta say sadly WW2 had some more utterly horrific atrocities. Near the end of the war the SS released criminals from the jails to run rampant in the occupied Slavic territories. They did stuff even the SS officers wanted them dead for.

A small correction - Robin Williams recorded his lines for Aladdin came out in 1992, while the filming for Schindler's List didn't start until March of 1993. But Robin Williams did indeed call in once a week, always at the same time and do 15 minutes of standup, and the moment he got the biggest laugh, he'd hang up, mic drop style. What a guy. I still have a hard time thinking of him in past tense.
