Schindler's List video will be ready on Patreon in 2 days (this Wednesday) despite what the video says, that's more for when everythings ready for YT. I just thought this little chat was fairly important and person, and deserving of being a clip on its own.

The Schindler's list reaction with my dad is coming this Wednesday, despite what it says at the start of the video. That's just for YT's sake when the video is published. I just wanted to make a clip out of this little conversation cause it felt important.

It’s crazy how little we learn about Japan’s invasion of China. I don’t think most North American schools go further than “Japan attacked Pearl Harbor so the Americans dropped the nuclear bombs” Thank you for sharing this moment.

Gregory Sambrano

Didn’t think I’d hear anyone talk about unit 731 that was actually fighting during it my grandfather fought in the navy so didn’t see to much land fighting but heard stories about it

Elder Lyons

holy fuck that gesture at the end...

Your fathers knowlegde and experience is allways very interesting and unice. I got the oportunity to talk to a lot of WW2 participants (from the german perspective) and a lot of the storys are suprisingly similar with the people that fought on the side of the allys. Props to your father and you to give us the chance to hear these storys.

Sean Brown

This was a lighthearted reaction channel and George is bringing the serious business. It’s something really unique and not a perspective I’ve ever seen, at least not on YouTube.

JayF

Still hoping you'd consider a reaction to The Sand Pebbles (1966). It would probably be a good choice to do with your dad as it takes place in 1920s China. I really enjoy these reactions with your dad. He's probably about my age. :)

Max Carter

I don't have much to add other than to say I found this discussion really fascinating hearing about these things from people with such close ties to it. If anyone wants more on the Japanese invasion of China then I highly recommend listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast which did a lengthy series call Supernova in the East

Young Blood Priest

That was deep thanks for sharing. George I once suggested you and your dad watch HBO’s the Pacific instead of Band of Brothers but I take that back. That show is intense an I don’t want your dad to endure it. After watching this I think it would be way to personal for him. Again thanks for sharing the conversation.

George sorry for your loss, everyone deserves to see their grandparents die in natural conditions. I don’t have more words to say other than I hope you found peace and continue your life the way you’re doing now. And your dad being brave for telling us the story, he couldn’t explain it better, find peace to you both.

Great conversation and the perils between Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in their atrocities is spot on. The massacre of the Chinese people was just as horrible and is forgotten much here in the West.

Jesse

Thank you for sharing, people at large are very ignorant of how horrific Imperial Japan was, very similar to the Nazis.

Jim Finley

I've always been struck by the difference between the way the Germans accepted responsibility, acknowledged the monstrousness of what their country had done under the Nazis, and worked to educate their future generations and try to make sure it never happened again, and the way the Japanese have always denied, minimized, and changed the subject rather than apologizing.

My grandmother was fighting for the Belgian resistance during WWII and she lost her father and 2 brothers when the girl next door ratted them out to her German friends she was partying with. The fact that we see such a radical shift to the right in the west is infuriating. For the longest time I attributed it to the generation that lived through it no longer being here. I wonder how if a similar thing is happening in the east.

WW2 was not a good time, I got no stories about heroics from my family. My great grandfather deserted his post as a member of the national guard. Which was probably wise in hindsight, he has a family and farm to protect and the Germans didn't seem to bothered by our resistance. As my grandmother got lost more and more in her alzeimers the horrors of the war came more and more to the forefront. As a teenager it certainly left an impact when an allied plane was shot down and lit her friends on fire when it crashed down the street. Or the time a fighter strafed their farm and hit their life stock. But overall the Germans weren't to hard on my country in the beginning. We were Germanic kin after all and expected to welcome them with open arms. Some did of course but others didn't to a degree that angered the Germans more and more. So in the end you could say they tried to make up for lost time. I don't hold modern Germans accountable of course. You joke about the war but that's old water under the bridge. The only thing I would judge them on is if they forsake their duty of keeping fascism out of their politics. That's still unforgiveable to me.

Chase Lonnergan

Wow. It is incredible just how much George looks like his grandfather. The resemblance is uncanny.

0:22 China during WW2? That's where those Doolitle guys landed, right? :-/ Among the more "worldly," pun intended, you have those who consider the starting date of WW2 to be July 7, 1937, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident*, which is generally regarded as the start of the full-scale Sino-Japanese war. (Then you have those who go back to the "Manchurian Incident" of 1931, following which Japan invaded and occupied Manchuria.) (While we're at it, why not October 3, 1935? :-| ) (* Out of an abundance of caution [clears throat]: I am using the name I am most familiar with; I am not familiar with and am not taking any position regarding possible nomenclature debates.)

I’ve subscribed but I’m still locked out? Any ideas?

Thank you to you and your father, George, for sharing this. These accounts are so important, and are neglected when it comes to historical accounts. My late father was in the Navy deployed in the Pacific in WWII, and the Korean War -- and though I love him and he was a good dad, he was a racist when it came to Japan. He saw what the Japanese troupes did to people from China firsthand. He talked in very vague terms about most of his war experiences, probably because I was a kid (he died when I was a teenager), but it was was the thing he brought up when I would ask him why he hated Japan. And at the same time, the US had Japanese internment camps. It's awful what we do to each other.
