I can’t wait to see their reaction to the worst studio cgi of the era.

JediLounger

I would be very interested to see you guys react to The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) for, uh, various reasons (spoilers).

Daniel Popp

Was hoping for Army Of Darkness or Prey. Oh well.

JayF

Simone, I don't remember Shortround having a slingshot but the same actor had one in The Goonies.

djKENTO

Wowwwwww they live in the Batman Begins Wayne Manor! I never noticed that before.

Kasa

Day 8483929 of asking them to do Prisoners (2013)

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

The Rock's first appearance as an actor was That 70s Show, he appeared as his dad(Rocky Johnson), then he had 2 more on sci fi shows but The Mummy Returns was his first movie

BHillzebub

Weird coincidence I literally just finished re-watching your reaction to the first one. Looking forward to watching this tonight.

Shehab Dawoud

You don't have to watch the third one. It's really bad + Rachel is NOT in it! The Scorpion King movies are equally bad.

djKENTO

I remember he did Star Trek Voyager around this time too. They slapped some garbage on his forehead and made him an alien wrestler.

Jihad Lee

Scorpion King is way better than the 3rd Mummy that’s for sure. They should watch it just for the backstory of him

8bitAndy

If we're doing sequels that are not nearly as good as the original but still entertain, I'd recommend Ocean's Twelve next. It doesn't have anything as iconic as The Rock's CGI moment, but it's still fun.

Monica Alarcon

Oh yes! It has many many flaws but it's so much fun!

Jeb Manning

Not as good as the original but still pretty fun in it's own right. The best thing about it is the main stars and especially Rachel Weisz.

Jeb Manning

I would recommend reacting to City of the Living Dead, if that's OKay? It's an Italian horror movie by Lucio Fulci and it's amazing.

Gryff

So much to love about this second one! Tons of cool concepts and new bad guys to fight and all the new locations were engrossing. It's a fantastic adventure movie with a few... Oddities tacked on.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Hoping you get to Monty Python's The Meaning of Life since you've already done the other 2 long ago

Logan Kerlee

Had a great time watching this terribly cheesy and FUN movie with you both! :) I still totally enjoyed this, despite the HORRIBLE cgi! :P I never watched this one in theaters, so I don't know how it was back then. I know that I always liked the first, more though. This one's more action packed but less story filled. Right, George, more heavy in production but less story. From what I'm reading now, the third - I never watched it - is very similar but a whole lot less fun. So basically take all of the positives in this and take about 80% of that away. Oh! Evelyn's no longer played by Rachel Weisz as well and is instead played by Maria Bello. No clue who she is... so that's a chunk of the bad vibes with it, methinks as well.

MikeBdrx

Simone laughing so hard that she went silent has to be the greatest thing I've witnessed this month lol.

Odd Thomas

Not as good as the first but stll fun. The third one is utter pants though; it's just not the same without Rachel Weisz

Gary Fixler

Simone asked when rubber duckies were invented. It would have been some time after rubber was invented, so some time after 1600BC, the earliest known rubber that archaeologists have found. Hope that the helps!

Odd Thomas

Another great Egyptian-set movie is Stargate with Kurt Russell

Robb

This one gives me hope they'll do Men in Black 2 at some point too or Saw 2 as well 🙏

Ph4ZeD

George, Diablo 2 came out in 2000, so it cannot of taken inspiration from this film!

Young Blood Priest

I have no idea what The Rock’s first movie is but he was funny as hell in Be Cool with John Travolta which is a sequel of Get Shorty.

Odd Thomas

From memory, the filmmakers just ran out of time and bit off more than they could chew re: the effects. I think the number of shots are probably double what was in the first film, even bigger set pieces and they had to have it finished for the summer 2001 slot - barely 2 years since the first film was released. The Rock debacle really hurt it from minute one, though I'm sure it still made decent money. They didn't fix it for home video either, which struck me as a missed opportunity.

Odd Thomas

Another good Rock movie is Southland Tales, directed by Richard Kelly who made Donnie Darko. Very weird movie and Dwayne Johnson's most unique role.

KnittingHaven

I saw this in theaters, and yes, the reaction to how bad the Rock cgi looked was pretty much immediate. It was also kind of hard to take him seriously as an actor at the time, he just seemed so cartoonish even in the beginning scenes. But I remember enjoying the movie overall. I've only seen the third one once, don't remember it being very good, but might be interesting to watch it with George since it's sent in China :).

akaTheBARON

🖤Me 13 minutes in eating popcorn like the Michael Jackson GIF, patiently waiting for CGI Rock to show up towards the end XD... I'm assuming it won't go unaddressed LOL.

China Andronicus

It definitely looked just that ludicrous in the theatre. I was so happy you appreciated Imhotep's over-dramatics at the end. They never cease to crack me up. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is....not good. No Rachel Weisz and they killed Rick and Evie's relationship. Without that, the storyline really failed.

REDR58

And Get Shorty is something that Simone and George should definitely check out!

REDR58

For a really good and very early Brendan Fraser movie check out “School Ties” from 1992. It also stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

FranciscoGios

Bedazzled (2000) and/or Encino Man (1992), both have the same actor.

Chase Schleich

Wow.... talk about an out of left field movie choice.

Buhr

With how bad the movie is with historical accuracy elsewhere weirdly enough drink umbrellas were invented in 1932. Only the important stuff right?

Christopher Greenley

Skip sequel. No Rachel Weisz witch really killed it for me. Maria Bello instead.

Cubonemaker

don't bother with the sequels, they're pretty bad. Mummy fanbase likes to joke that they don't exist.

JayF

I see all the posts saying to skip the other movies but I've got to be honest, getting through this one has been pretty brutal. I think I'm about half way through it at this point and I'm watching it 10-15 minutes at a time before I lose focus. Edit - I'll add that Rachel is one of my big Hollywood crushes and that can't even save this one.

Chase Lonnergan

The Mummy Returns is a perfect example of a sequel that tries too hard.

Felreign

I would recommend the Scorpion King movie (only the first), if you have any interest in a straight summer action movie, no horror or mummies, but great fun anyway.

Jacob King

This was very well received at the time. The Rock was the most successful wrestler in history and this was the peak of his fame and this was definitely not the only bad CGI to show up in a mid-tier action movie that summer. This was six months before Fellowship came out and raised the bar on what was expected from a fantasy movie. The Scorpion King franchise (there are five of the dang things) was already in the works and they are kind of doing a backdoor pilot with The Mummy Returns even though I would argue there isn’t much crossover in the audiences. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is a bad movie that had no business being made. The years between mummy movies include the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and the Spider-Man trilogy so it makes sense to do a third one but it doesn’t have Rachel Weisz, the characters are all miserable, they waste Jet Li, and (the real reason fans hate it) they make dismissive jokes about the earlier movies. It’s also tedious.

REDR58

It was an incredible slog to get through. I had some higher expectations but it was way worse than I expected.

REDR58

I wasn’t terribly bothered by the quality of the special effects. Some were pretty good some were outright bad but there were number of reasons that happened in this movie. My issue was that it was an incredibly dull movie. I found it exceedingly boring for this, my first-time watching it, way more than I expected to be. I also found the child’s character (I can’t remember his name and cannot be bothered to look it up) to be incredibly grating and annoying. Not the kid actor’s fault at all. He actually wasn’t too bad just some of the stuff he said and did was really annoying. Nothing like Short Round at all.

Jack Burton

again the talking causes you to miss explanations for things you guys thought didn't make sense. she had dreams about stuff so she knew where she was going in the temple at the beginning.

Poddington

I could easily watch a 2 hour movie of just Patricia Velasquez and Rachel Weisz wrestling. I Like both the first two The Mummy films. Not intended to have sequels the success of the first all but assured it. Then with the sequel they try to establish what could move into a franchise. You've got one of the biggest actions stars of early 2000s, one of the best progressive leading women (for the time) of the same time and also the always funny John Hannah (like...how did that happen...). The bad guy too with Imhotep. AS predicted I could easily see a sequel where they have to team up with Imhotep, even with them becoming a good guy. It writes itself at that point. But it wasn't to be. I'm not sure if it was Brendan Frasers real world injuries that prevented a third film from being made straight after The Mummy Returns, but with a 7 year gap, Rachel moving on possibly having scheduling conflicts etc the third film was late to the party and no where near as successful. Also trying to spin off and having The Scorpion King as another series of films that didn't materialise due to not being successful I guess we just have to appreciate what we do have. We know the franchise is still loved. The Mummy ride at whatever place the ride is or was at is meant to be hugely popular. Also Georges mention of settings in China always having dragons is like a foreshadow to the overused tropes of the 3rd film :D

Logan Nelson

Great reaction as always... Need a good disaster movie poll... Get some silly movies like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, San Andreas, etc...

Joe

People calling this movie terrible seem a little joyless to me. It's no masterpiece, but it's a fun, light hearted sequel. Lighten up.

Simon Clifton

Just to throw it out there, if you ever wanted to see just what the British version of Police Squad/Naked Gun would be like, I’d recommend the two part miniseries “Touch of Cloth” starring John Hannah from this. Written by Charlie Brooker (he of Black Mirror fame) it’s a parody of the gritty troubled cop drama so favoured in the UK and is wonderful! There are 3 two-parters in total, each as equally daft as each other!

Jared Winn

The story I’ve always heard is they did the CGI of the Scorpion King last and only had a two weeks or something to do it, which is why it doesn’t look great. The Scorpion King movie was fun for 12 year old me back in the day but I bet it doesn’t hold up. Lot more toned down and “realistic” than this.
