Happy to see you guys getting more into Tim Burton. Once again, I would highly recommend checking out Ed Wood. Possibly his greatest film and necessary viewing for anyone's who's seen Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Goddamn that thumbnail is absolutely cursed. I... *sniffle* I love it.

Johanna Caulfield

Imagine being Henry Selick. You spend years directing one of the most iconic animated films of all time, only for another guy to get all the credit because his name's in the title.

A Red Mage Named Blue

That castle certainly does get more complicated over time. Should see the most recent version

JayF

Gimme a like if you are all in on more Simone singing in reactions.

Martin

That thumbnail is the stuff of nightmares.

I am 100% here for Simone getting way overexcited. It's adorable and heartening and why I joined this Patreon in the first place.

Elder Lyons

absolutely, whats funny sad though is that if it was George who was excited, people will be complaining. hell even yesterday with Oppenheimer, one of us was complaining in that video about how he needs to 'stop being so overly excited and just let Simone watch the movie'. that guy deleted the comment after getting called out, but i wonder if he would have that same complain here.

Please watch Peter Jackson’s the lovely bones😊

Although I don't think this was necessarily the intended message at the time, I think this movie really works as a message against surface level cultural appropriation. It's great to find inspiration in traditions that aren't your own, but it should be done more than just surface level. It doesn't come across right if you don't take the time to really learn it.

You guys should come down to Disneyland around this time next year to ride the "Nightmare Before Christmas" retheme of the Haunted Mansion. So much fun (but plan on going on a weekday early in Dec, if possible, or even the week right after our Thanksgiving before it gets overcrowded. Or maybe the big concert they do every year at the Hollywood Bowl where they show the film with live score/songs, with Danny Elfman and special guests. This year Catherine O’Hara was there one night, and so was Fred Armisen and a few others. They have everything all decorated and have a costume contest before the show. Another group sometimes shows the film in one of the old, beautiful, movie palaces in downtown LA, and maybe sometimes at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, where they show movies in the spring-fall on the side of the big mausoleum and everyone sits on the lawn (near Chris Cornell and Jonny Ramone's graves). And THEN, Disney shows it in '4D' at the El Capitan movie theatre on Hollwyood Blvd, right across from the Chinese Theatre, and that one is fun. Come on down!

My kids dressed up as Sally and Jack for Halloween this year. We this movie every Halloween. It is a big debate in our house whether this is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie.

Sleepy Hollow (1999) is a great Tim Burton film. If you liked the aesthetic of this film, you’ll love that one.

Given how much you loved the style and visuals, I'll heavily recommend the entire Laika stable. Particularly "Coraline" and "Kubo and the Two Strings". "Coraline" is also directed by Henry Selick and it is an overall MASTERPIECE. "Kubo and the Two Strings" elevates the stop-motion to a next level. For the "message" of this movie, I think it comes down to Cultural Appropriation vs. Cultural Sharing. Jack initially tries to TAKE OVER Christmas and do it HIS WAY. He doesn't get any input from the people who've done it before. He is sincere when he says that this is a 'vacation' for Santa Claus since he'll do all the work for him, but it's not a vacation that Santa Claus asked for or consented to. He then exported his version to the rest of the world, who expected and wanted something else. If Jack wanted to do his own Christmas, fine and good, but he's making "his" Christmas into "the" Christmas. The same thing applies big and small to almost all aspects of cultural exchanges. Cooking customs are shared around the world, but if somebody from England says "The REAL way to make Pad Thai is by doing THIS" as opposed to "MY way of making Pad Thai" then it's insulting (This particular example comes from one of Gordon Ramsey's cooking shows where he deliberately sought out chefs from around the world and asked them how his style compared. The Thai chef said that Ramsey's 'Pad Thai' may be good in and of itself, but it wasn't Pad Thai).

With the Christmas season coming up, may I make a recommendation if that's OKay? I recommend Ernest Saves Christmas. I know it's not exactly a horror movie, but it's a Christmas classic. Plus, at one point the characters do visit the filming set of a fictional horror movie. It has Douglas Seale, the same actor who played the Sultan in Aladdin, as one of the best movie Santa Clauses ever. Also, it's just really funny and heartwarming. It's got that certain Christmas charm that's perfect for the holiday. It's a perfect way to start the Christmas season.

Nerd's Gold

The message here wasn't anywhere near as complicated as people seem to think. Jack felt there was something missing from his life, and tried to take over Christmas to fill that. He didn't have to change what he was. He just had to find Sally.

🎼What’s this?! Simone sings along! What’s this? She’s ruining the song. What’s this? Maybe I should mute the freaking sound and watch it upside down. What’s THIS?!🎼 LOL Just kidding, Simone.

Halloween + Christmas = Krampusnacht

Such a good film & this kind of animation style is something that gets an immediate add to the view list for me. I'd definitely recommend checking out Nightmare Revisited too, it's the alternative soundtrack version including Marilyn Manson, Korn & Amy Lee, also produced by Danny Elfman.

Awesome80s

If you like this style you should watch Coraline from the same director.

gobmob2000

Other claymation films I recommend to watch include: Wallace and Gromit series (4 short films and 1 feature length) Chicken Run 2000 James and the giant peach 1996

Jennifer Tremblay

I know this isn't directed by Tim Burton, but Danny Elfman composes the music for all of Tim Burton's films. :)
