Jay Davis

I'm okay with that!

Martin Roca

Is a christmas miracle, thanks for the extra episode!

JayF

Simone, if it makes you feel better last week I cut both the tip of my pinky opening cat food cans and my thumb while collecting garbage at work. Presumably that was a can as well. I didn't notice the cut until I was finished.

Martin Roca

I'm not sure if it's cheating. When you have a gf/bf, is a tacit contract, and when you separate, its the same. The only difference with a marriage is a legal contrat for a lot of stuff, like material, family, kids, etc. If you don't wanna be with that person anymore, and let him/her know and make it super clear, you're not legaly separate for this contact but you're separate as a couple, giving you all the right to do whatever you want. So I agree with George.

Jeff K

Dang George, what do you have in that mug, the Atlantic Ocean?

michael clarke

im sure its a matter of opinion, but unless people agree to start seeing other people, i believe it is an infidelity. people who hate skylar often cite this as the reason why she should be hated. its pretty obvious she did it to add conclusion and destroy his hopes of getting back together. the same people who hate skylar for this also hold walt up as a hero. when weighed, she slept with someone in order to hurt him.... he..... murdered people. you see the problem with these obvious misogynists. a woman stepping out beyond their control is unforgivable.

michael clarke

if you think about it, walt started lying episode 1 season 1. but yes, the flirtation seemed to start as a response to walts deception. i cant remember the specific spot, i just remember it being written that she started it because she was pushed far away by walt. it was started as response to her isolation.

PureGonzo

Oh ffs, if you keep throwing around overused buzzwords like misogyny when they aren’t even remotely applicable, then they’ll lose all meaning. In a real world context, I do agree that it makes absolutely no sense to dislike Skyler while at the same time actively rooting for Walt, seeing as Walt is the obvious villain whereas Skyler is a victim, albeit a flawed one. But the reason people find themselves rooting for Walt within the context of a fictional TV series is because he’s the MAIN CHARACTER. It’s also due to Vince Gilligan’s brilliant writing. It’s not because the viewers hate women… lol. The viewer is *supposed* to feel conflicted about what they want for Walt. That’s the whole point. That’s why they (the writers) show us his entire character arc, all the way from the very beginning. I could elaborate further, but that might risk spoiling something for George and Simone if they happen to read this comment, so I’ll stop here. But to reiterate, I completely agree with almost everything you said, minus the misogyny angle.

Conner

To the infidelity discussion after episode 3: It is infidelity. Like, I get it from a moral standpoint it sort of isn't. But they are married, she is technically breaking the legal agreement of marriage. For the record: I don't think she's doing anything wrong morally, but she is committing adultery regardless. Pretty vicious call imo, Walt is the exact type of person that cuckolding would hurt the most. Queen shit lol

Jason Rivero

FYI The pizza on the roof gag was definitely scripted. There are behind the scene clips of Bryan Cranston rehearsing the throw and Vince Gilligan confirmed it on a Reddit AMA. That's why it was unsliced, so it would land in one piece.

p0sthum4n

3 episodes? Hell yeah. I'm currently watching Breaking Bad with you guys and Better Call Saul with another and it's getting a little confusing jumping back and forth lol

Jeff K

Yeah, the part that was surprising was that Cranston did it on the very first take, but it was definitely planned. They just weren't expecting him to immediately nail it, is my recollection.

Jeff K

Hank is SUCH a good character. So much more complex (and competent) than he initially appeared. I think he ended up being my favorite character in the show.

Jeff K

VFW = Veterans of Foreign Wars

Travis H

Before episode 3 titled I.F.T aired parts of the internet was trying to figure out what IFT meant and came up with some crazy ideas (that I unfortunately do not remember). So when it was revealed that it just stood for “I Fucked Ted”(which was bleeped on AMC when it aired) was hysterical. As for “is what Skylar did considered cheating”, Yes 100%. She can’t divorce him, she can’t get him out of her house, she wanted to hurt him (and potentially gain some of the power back in their relationship) and this was the only way she could think of that would not destroy her (and her families) entire life (and not get people killed but she doesn’t know that). I’m going to try not to go too deep into the Skylar misogynistic fans argument this post because I am not in the mood for those replies today. But Skylar “cheating” is pretty much the biggest issue they have against Skylar outside of the “nagging wife” argument.

michael clarke

i just want to thank you guys. this year a lot of creators have stepped up and made a point to put out things for those of us who are alone through the holidays. my family is jehovahs witnesses, i am not. its just been nice with the extra christmas videos and the 3 episodes today. im not sure of your reasoning for the extra content, but its felt and appreciated.

PIG

And they never betrayed the original writing of the character too. He’s still the same as S1E1. Also goes to show, you never really know a person when you first meet them.

Joe Lazarus

Wow if that isn’t one sided I don’t know what is. Walt was never a criminal before that either. He was a regular good dad and good husband. He only did this after he found out he had cancer and got scared for the welfare of his family. Yeah what a piece of shit caring like that. He wanted them to be able to survive and thrive when he died. It may have been wrong but his intentions weren’t ill. Also he was put in positions where he lied to her yes but not because he wanted to because he was trying to protect her. Oh and by the way don’t forget that Skylar is also a criminal. She’s covering up fraud for her boss. So yeah she’s no saint. Then she says all she wants is the truth. He then tells her because he decided to be truthful and fix the marriage. So then she goes and fucks her boss out of spite or malice. I mean this man wasn’t malicious when he decided to cook meth. And you can’t just point out the wrongs of one person in the relationship when the other person has her secrets... They both broke the law. Who can say which is worse drugs or fraud. You can’t. They are both illegal. So many people are hypocrites. No one is perfect no one. Especially in a marriage involving family and life in general. But I do love to see how many people think they are perfect and have no idea what they would do in Walt’s situation with Walt’s knowledge of chemistry. All in all it’s actually sad because they did love each other in the beginning and what he did initially was out of love and desperation. Maybe the audience should feel sorry for THE CHILDREN!!

Vwlss Nvwls

When I was in high school, my father was like Walter White. He would walk around the house in tighty whiteys and a tank top under shirt. He actually got mad at me once for having friends over when he got home from work, and used that dress code as a reason why I have to ask before having friends over. :D

Armchair Rizzard

I can say which is worse: its selling crystal meth to people, which ruins lives and causes people, including children to die, and probably also the guy who blew up two planes and killed over 100 innocent people due to his actions. Thats probably worse than a little white collar tax fraud. Probably just me though, I don't know how you feel.

Mr TV Eye

I'm with you. She clearly has separated from him and filed a divorce. The fact that he don't agree with that and psychologically forced his way back into the house doesn't change anything about that. It might be a disadvantage when it comes to a "dirty" divorce (lawyers fighting about who is to blame, about money, about who takes care of the children etc.), but since it was after the breakup and after Walt moved out for a few weeks already, I guess even that wouldn't have much of an impact. And morally, it's not cheating at all. Again, they are separated. She can have one-night-stands or start new relationships with whoever she wants. Plus, in the end it really doesn't matter. There are some Skyler-haters that come up with arguments like "yes, Walt is cooking meth, but Skyler is a cheating bitch", as if those two things are even remotely comparable. And ofc they are not, not at all. Is cheating OK? No, you should be man or woman enough to quit first, if you're not happy anymore in your relationship, and you probably hurt your partners feelings. But in the end, that's it. Cooking - and at some point also selling - meth and killing/letting people die (even if one can argue it's "only" out of self preservation) in the process seriously harms thousands of people, and innocent people too (remember the kid from "Peekaboo"?). That's not even another level, that's a completely different game.

Vwlss Nvwls

I have to correct Simone. Jesse's parents are not lovely people. They seem nice on the outside, but they will mentally traumatize their children if they are not exactly how they want them to be.

Mr TV Eye

“I Fucked Ted”(which was bleeped on AMC when it aired)... Got to love what "the society" deems to be OK and not OK. A show about someone - the main character - cooking drugs, killing people etc., showing drug abuse and lots of violence, that's all fine. But using the f-word? No, that has to be bleeped out. :D

J.R.

excited for episodes 6-8 this week! happy that this 3 episode trend has caught on and is now an established thing that will absolutely never change going forward. Cheers George

Tenn Seven

Walter is subscribing to George Constanza's girlfriend Maura's relationship theory: "I refuse to give up on this relationship. It's like launching missiles from a submarine, both of us have to turn our keys."

michael clarke

yeah, his buying the house felt good because he was being pushed away in a time of need and even after he had made the responsible changes he needed to make. his parents can be understood because im sure this has come after a series of extreme disappointments, but ultimately, they failed to really bother to read where he was at. they stopped caring. his attempt to be part of their life was met with distance and there was nothing he could do.

Vwlss Nvwls

VFW is a verterans organization. I am not exactly sure what it stands for, but it is for military verterans.

JJ

I love Walt and I love Skylar. I love every character in this magnificently written TV show. Perhaps the best show ever made. That is all.

E. D.

fun fact: I watched Pearl (2022) last night.. and oh boy what a movie that is lol, I think I like it.. acting was great, beautifully shot, prod design great... don´t know what to think about the story... I thought I was mentally prepared lol but uh... there were quite a bit wtf moments lmao... I´d be really interested to see G&S´s reaction and opinions to that film. (I´m aware there is a sequel to Pearl called "X" that was shot before Pearl which I haven´t seen yet)

sarCC

X was made and released first, Pearl was an unplanned prequel they decided to make on the fly when they got stuck on location because of covid lockdown. Strangely enough, I think Pearl was the much more original and well-made of the 2 movies, even if I wasn't really impressed by either. That last shot was really hilarious, though.

Aiden

Hope yall are doing well

Aiden

Hector might actually be the worst person in the whole breaking bad universe loll

JBK405

I'm solidly on the "it's not cheating" side for the exact points you raised in the commentary: At that point Skyler had done everything in her power to end their marriage. She'd said it verbally, she'd said it in writing, she had taken proactive steps to end their relationship. She wasn't 'thinking about getting a divorce', she was IN PROCESS. A relationship -- any relationship -- is a "2 yes, 1 no" situation. Once one of them wants out, it's over. Even if the paperwork takes a long time to catch up. Skyler's relationship with Ted is a bad decision for a whole host of other reasons, including that it's a classic rebound and those never end well, but it wasn't cheating. For the way Jesse sold that meth so calmly and so easily, I think that hearkens back to what he said to Walt when he got out of rehab: He's the bad guy. He's accepted that. And because he's accepted that, all of that guilt and self-doubt that's been manifesting as nerves and jitters for the first two seasons goes away. The rehab therapist said that the point isn't to become a Better Person in rehab, it's to recognize who you are so that you can properly deal with it. He's dealing with it, and that makes him a better criminal than he ever was before. When it comes to the comparison of Gus v. Walt and how Gus is SO MUCH SMARTER than Walt, I always think back to their very first interaction in season 2. When Walt has figured out that the "manager" was his contact and goes back to Los Pollos Hermanos. Up until Gus drops the act and admits who he is, he keeps up the performance of "friendly manager". He smiles, and he keeps his voice calm, and he offers to direct Walt to his website to register a complaint. And I think about how Walt could NEVER do that. Not even as part of his cover. He got pepper-sprayed by that cop because he couldn't accept being 'disrespected', and he just got fired because he couldn't keep up the 'good teacher' act at school. He was fuming last season during that charity TV interview even though Saul pointed out that it was a great cover story for his money laundering. Gus is somebody who cares about the REALITY of power, not the APPEARANCE of power. He's fine taking petty abuse at his 'dayjob' because he knows that it is part of his role and helps conceal his actual power and wealth. But Walt needs that appearance of power. His ego is in control, as you pointed out so often.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Bryan Cranston just likes being either nude or in tighty whiteys, he thinks it's funny. It's often his idea and they let him do it. That guy is just awesome, he was so funny as Hal. Fun fact, he came across Charles Manson before the murders back when Cranston was a kid, he was riding on a horse trail on Spahn Ranch and his group came across their group on the trail, he tells the story much better, check it out.

JCR

I think for most people, the Skyler hate thing stems from the first few episodes, before Walt broke bad. At that point she was painted as a typical, suburban, entitled house wife with a bunch of unimportant, first world problems, while Walt is experiencing, crushing disappointment with the direction of his life and now cancer, and the weight of his mortality. As things evolve, her place as a victim of the world Walt has created starts to become clear and it is easier to like her as a person and feel for her, and even root for her. The same thing can be said for Marie, as well. She becomes much more likable and sympathetic as things evolve, but she was another side of the same coin as Skyler in the first few episodes.

Haye Zeus

When Skylar said “I fucked Ted”, this show went up a notch and I fell in love with her. She finally gets to play with the big boys. I do count it as cheating, but I also don’t have a problem with her doing it like other people. It’s the least of all the crimes that are committed in this show. It’s not even a crime really. But I do think she was just using Ted to get back in a petty way towards Walt. There is still emotional involvement. The fact that she knows it would hurt him, means that she accepted that she committed the act of adultery.

Jomero

Vince Gilligan's original plan was to kill Jesse at the end of Season 1. But Aaron Paul brought so much more to the character than he expected, and his chemistry with Cranston was extremely amazing and obvious. Vince realized his idea to off him in season 1 was a really stupid idea. Cranston took Paul under his wing and really mentored him beyond what he had already learned as an actor. The two became really good friends even offscreen, and they enjoyed goofing around a lot. They had some really good halloween costumes over the years. One of my favorites being them dressing up as the other's characters (Cranston as Jesse, Paul as Walter).

Josh

I remember watching this show for the first time and thinking all the time where is this show going? How is it gonna end? All I can say and I’ve said it before but this show keeps getting better and better. Season 3 is amazing and a close to perfect as you can get but seasons 4 and 5 ARE perfect.

Ketzalborne

3 whole episodes in a row was a real treat but i still wish i could watch just 1 more episode. Even tho this is a rewatch for me its still so addictive

John Richards

Yup, I love season 3, but for some detractors, when it comes to season 3 there's a fly in the ointment.

Presto2222

VFW = The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.

Johen Kay

I think what Skyler did was absolutely short sighted and that is verified when she herself regretted her affair after her talk with her sister. She has done a lot of selfish things on the show. When she asked Gretchen and Elliot to pay for Walter's medical bills when she knew how Walter would take it, when she started smoking even while pregnant, her affair with Ted to get back at Walter. What Walter did was for the family. You can argue that his intentions evolved and changed later, but his initial motivation was to leave as much money as possible for his family. I can sympathize with Walt but it's hard for me to sympathize with Skyler.

Andrew Ramos

I was afraid they weren't going to like BB. I'm glad they are getting into it. I still think Better Call Saul is more in their lane. Hopefully they jump on that train too.

NobleProfession

If you guys haven’t seen it you should watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s really weird.

Pajander

If you ask me the smoking is easily the worst thing she's done, everything else is kinda whatever. Their marriage was kinda garbage though, even in S1E1, and I don't think Walt has been happy or content in decades, if ever.

Jeff K

He's got some fantastic stories. One of the wildest is when he and his brother were in their early 20s and working as line cooks while touring around the country on their motorcycles, and at one of the restaurants where they worked along the way, the chef turned up dead and the Cranston brothers were briefly wanted on being suspected of being the murderers.

Philipp Roensch

Episode 4, when Walt literally dumps all his lies and these reasons at her feet, asking her to be ok with it while still manipulating. Skyler getting back at him with Ted plays the ball back to her court, a powerful move in my view. You are right, by episode 5 Skyler really come around to opening her eyes to certain illegalities and not being told all makes it ok. Walt has not yet confessed about murder to anyone.

Scott G

2 things about episode 5: VFW is Veterans of Foreign Wars. It's an organization military veterans can join. And at the very end of the episode I had a "Huh?" moment. Combo must have gone back and lived at home after stealing his mom's RV, cuz that photo of him and Jesse at the strip club was taken literally the night before. It must've been awkward in the house after that. lol

Dk

I feel like there are two extremes that some fans of the show fall into. There's the anti-Skyler crowd. And we definitely know the general type of person that is. But there's also the "Walter is pure evil and I hate him and root against him" crowd. Which also makes no sense to me. With these people, everyone else on the show seems to get a pass whenever they do something bad. It's very hypocritical. They also can never believe that Walt is doing anything altruistically. Almost every character in this show is shades of gray. Just like with any great show. I only bring this up because you seem to already be leaning toward being this type of viewer. And what eventually happens with these people is they misread several scenes in the upcoming seasons because they can't possibly believe Walt has some good in him.

Tcrimson05T

Meh. I just think it's hypocritical to sleep with her boss while helping him break the law, while wanting shunning Walt for breaking the law. Don't get me wrong, divorce Walt. He's a Monster. Or developing into one. Walt should have left. But again, are we ok with doing illegal things to provide for our family or not? That's my only reason for dislike or her. Besides the while... smoking while pregnant but to each their own. Other than that....that's it.

Bolichnikov

I like how George tried to prove he had legs by using the Lt. Dan trick of putting on magic legs to stand at his desk. Good try George but I’m not buying it

j c

Here's a fun fact, since the previous season's plane crash was mentioned in this episode. That scenario of two planes crashing into each other resulted in one of the deadliest real life plane crashes in US history(Aeromexico 498). The air traffic controller directing those planes? A Mr. Walter White.

JJ

I agree. This show is meant to be about moral complexity, and in recent years people have really dumbed down the analysis by being morally reductive. Sign of the times I guess.

Onno Smits

Hmm.... What movie has a relatively short runtime, and has a weasely character that has a laugh like that...

Śéáń

It's genuinely refreshing to see you guys relate to Skylar's point of view in all of this compared to the past 10 years of fandom's weird complex they have with her. She's even recently been named as one of the top three "hated characters on television" in a poll of 175k voters, only just below GOT's Ramsey Bolton and Joffrey Baratheon. Madness. There was a phenomenon a while back called the "AMC Wife", where the wives of the main characters in a bunch of AMC shows (Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Mad Men) were just *hated* by the fanbases, seemingly because they acted as a foil to their husbands doing questionable things (each has their own flaws of course, it wasn't just because they interfered with the power fantasies and it's perfectly fine to simply not like a character, but the overall level vitriol was noticably higher around them than one would think was warranted)

Max Hassam

It's funny that George picked the name "Betsy" for the RV seeing as that's the name of the actress who plays Marie :'D

Jay Davis

Is Gus so much smarter than Walt, or was he just more in control of his emotions and ego? I think Walt is more intelligent than Gus. And the fact that Gus would even set up the first meeting at Los Pollos before Walt was even "hired" was absolutely insane. As a top cartel leader who owns/runs a franchise restaurant as his cover, there's no way Walt and Jesse would even lay eyes on me until they were already employed by me and under my control. I'd have someone else conduct the interviews. Walt is probably the most intelligent, Gus is the best manager/leader, and Mike has the most common sense and is the best strategist.

MasterElodin

I think its very understandable why people come to the conclusion of hating her. The show spends the first season justifying Walts actions and showing his reasons as to why he chose to go this way. And from the start (literally the first scene) he over and over says how much he loves her and his family. Then she starts suspecting something is going on and becomes increasingly hostile towards him. And she has very good reasons for that if you look at what she knows and how Walt behaves towards her. But thats the problem, the audience knows more than her. They see a father/husband dying of cancer who wants to do a last try to provide for his family after feeling like he failed them all his life. And then she starts villainizing him for that. Makes a lot of sense to me why people find that annoying. Also Skylars actress is very good at portraying the "bitchy", entitled houswife so she makes it very easy to be hated if that makes sense. Of course all of that isnt really relevant because in her position it is very justified to hate Walt. I mean he is a straight up murderer at this point and did some awful things. But its very easy to forget that she knows nothing about all of what he did. Or rather its hard to put yourself into her shoes after having Walts struggles and motivations be the main plot of the show for so long. Another maybe minor thing I think is that the audience may be relatively young and think that what walt does is badass and interesting and she is just causing problems. Also for someone young you are not very used to a villain protagonist as most child/adolescent movies and shows have a hero protagonist. So you naturally accept Walts actions more than Skylars. At least thats what happened with me I think. When I first watched this show at like 13 or so, I was very annoyed with her too. Now watching this 12 years later, I can empathize with her a lot more and can see why she is understandibly hostile towards him. Anyway sorry for the rant lol

Dan Holmes

The non complex part about cheating is that marriage isn't just a relationship it's an agreement. so "infidelity" still applies even if only one party is "done" emotionally. there is obviously a socially acceptable element to this but on paper and in the one parties mind it isn't. imagine if skyler did the same thing but her only reasoning for leaving was boredom. don't justify her wrong actions just because walt did something terrible to set her off. two wrontgs dont make a right or whatever lol

Hexon66

I think that hits it pretty well. Skyler, as well as Marie and Hank, are all flawed characters in mundane, even trop-ish ways. She's a bit of a control freak, probably as unhappy with how life has turned out as Walt, so she does come off a bit shrewish. But then put in relief to Walt's antics, the audience has to reassess.

Hexon66

While I understand Simone's fondness for Jesse, I can't agree that Walter would've been nowhere without him. He essentially was just a narrative portal into the drug world, and Walter is the unique character. Now, I do believe it would have been a lesser show without Jesse, and that's a testament to Aaron Paul and the writers.

Honey Hermsen

Skylar be like "We were on a break!"

Nick Kessler

it's still 100 percent cheating

Imnot Acop

I actually really love the cops in episode 3. As someone in that line of work, I feel like the portrayal was so good. As a cop, you'd definitely be thinking "There's a reason for this that I'm not seeing. Something's not being said." and investigating that, the way he did was a really great example.

Habman

It's amazing how forgiving you two are with Skyler but what did Walt do to her personally. Nothing.

Habman

You guys have a poor judge of character. Just wait and see

Rav Low

Figured I'd toss out the quick answer but: "VFW" is "Veterans of Foreign Wars."

Angela D. Mitchell

Skylar has told him the marriage is over, she threw him out, she changed the locks, and served him divorce papers. I would definitely say she doesn't owe Walt any explanations for her behavior.

Raven Dark

In the middle of watching the second of these two eps, and wanted to pause to leave a comment here. I love this show, but while watching the first episode, when Walt was in the house and refused to leave was the moment I stopped being on his side. That's the moment I agreed with George and stopped rooting for him. But, during that scene in this episode when Jesse and Walt are in the car talking about the meth Jesse cooked? That's the moment I started HATING Walter.

Benjamin Herrera

I know it's a long time passed but just here to say F Skylar, she most definitely ain't good.

Benjamin Herrera

Don't get me Wrong, Walt is a a Villain but Skylar by no means is a Good person.. Still by this time in the show, we know what Walt has done but Skylar knows nothing about the violence so why she's trying to keep a Man's children from him is crazy. She knows he's was selling drugs but that wasn't enough to get the reaction of being terrified of him like he's a serial killer all of a sudden because that's how she acts like he's about to smack her every time they see each other. All my boy Walt wanted to do was have a good last time of his life before Skylar forced him to get Treatment.. no one wants to talk about how he was Forced into needing money.
