Jay Davis

George threw his back out yelling. And it's not a girdle! It's not a girdle!

JayF

Party time! Excellent!

Big Gee

Been waiting for this one and please do part 2 asap also.

Patrick

Tia Carrere was one of my first crushes as a kid. Hate to break it to you George, but she's American born in Hawaii and is part Filipina. Not even remotely Chinese haha

JayF

FYI, I think the main reason Myers got his reputation as being difficult to work with is because many of his movies are about characters he created. Wayne's World is an old Saturday Night Live skit (kudos to Simone on that one) that he created. When movie studios try to force him to make changes he doesn't put up with it. All the other stuff like the security guards not being able to look at him are things that I take as BS unless someone can produce proof.

Odd Thomas

An underrated Mike Myers film: The Cat in the Hat

Martin

George and Simone, this is OG content creation. This is how content creators had to do it before the internet-on public access television.

Dioskur

The movie that shaped my teen years! I am excited to see what you think!

MoonageDaydream

Wayne’s World 2 is considered by most people to be the better movie, highly recommend checking that one out

Keith Jones

The Grey Poupon joke was based on a dumb TV commercial from the early '80s. Some super rich prick is cruising in his Rolls eating food off of fine china in the back seat. He pulls alongside another Rolls and rolls down the window to ask the other prick if he had any Grey Poupon, which of course he does. It was a hugely popular commercial, but from my recollection of the time it was mostly because it was unintentionally funny. They thought it made the mustard look fancy.

Tenn Seven

The doorman at Gasworks (Tiny) was played by Meat Loaf, the singer and the same guy who played Robert Paulson in Fight Club. EDIT: Apparently Simone recognized him! Good going, Simone!

Patrick

Btw that song he put on in the car where you guys said "I've never heard this music before." That was oldschool Red hot chili peppers.

8bitAndy

The sitcom they were referencing was Laverne and Shirley

Elder Lyons

you can read all about what its like to work with him through interviews with his co stars on Cat in the Hat. not random staff even though they count just as much, but costars all said hes a nightmare to work with. just an unpleasant person. and if you consider the fact that people an industry that revolves around fame and "youre only as good as your last film", people are more likely to not bad mouth others for the sake of future roles and gigs, so for a bunch of his co stars to come out and say hes a nightmare, then it must be really really bad.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yeah Garth is my favorite, Dana Carvey said he based the character on his brother, and yeah he's really playing the drums in that scene. He's also said Mike Myers copied his Lorne Michaels impression for Doctor Evil. The original SNL skit was just based on the cable access shows that used to air back then in the VHF/UHF days when TV's still had bunny ear antennas and coax cable. Which reminds me to recommend Weird Al Yankovic's movie UHF, I think you've seen enough movies now to get most of the references. And it reminds me of Trailer Park Boys, which literally started as a spoof of a cable access show in Nova Scotia, I think it was hilarious, characters are so odd and great.

ExtraBigAssTaco

The villain/CEO in Brain Candy also has a Lorne Michaels voice. The Kids in the Hall was also a Lorne Michaels show. Also, not only UHF, but the new movie Weird, with Daniel Radcliff, is also great.

Jared Winn

Just watched your True Lies video a few days ago, and now I have another Tia Carrere movie today. I’m in heaven.

Naturekitty5309

In Mogan Freeman's voice: Long ago, before the internet had evolved into apps like YouTube, there was an entity called public access.

gobmob2000

You should also watch Kevin & Perry Go Large 2000, its a British Teen comedy film. Waynes World just reminded me of it a little.

Rupert Purcat

Party on George, part on Simone .... another Mike Myers request would be 'So I married an axe murderer' Cheers

Zachary Cadena

Stormlight archive T Shirt? Think he just supplanted Simone as the goat of the show XD

Tay Schumaker

About Dana Carvey making the Garth face. It was apparently very painful. After filming wrapped, Carvey suffered from severe jaw pain after emulating Garth’s overbite. He had to hold bags of ice to his jaw for several days after shooting ended.

gobmob2000

The original saying in TOS was "Where no Man has gone before". They changed it to "no one" to be more gender neutral in TNG. But I never really understood why, "no Man" was referring to mankind not man the sex. It was already gender neutral. Similar to how "Man" is used by Tolkien in LOTR. Also if you say "no one", it does not really make any sense, because other beings where defiantly there before in many places, so there often where beeings, i.e. "ones" in those places before and therefore the phrase is a little bit of a lie.

Wilss

The 2nd movie is almost as good (to me), some would say better.

Kinokind

So, Wayne's World was a recurring skit on SNL in the same way the Blues Brothers was. Mike Myers is Very Canadian. The donut place is obviously a Tim Horton's reference (there's a spinning hockey player on the roof, for god's sake). Also, the street hockey - what a giveaway! I worked with Dana Carvey for one show and found him to be delightful. He was funny and generous and dropped off at the venue by his wife. He was exactly what you would hope he'd be. As opposed to Myers' reputation. Alice Cooper isn't as extreme as in Wayne's World, but a little bit. He's a minister's son from Detroit and spends his time these days playing golf (and he used to own a barbecue restaurant in Phoenix). Kudos to Simone for doing a Lorne Michaels impression. Dana Carvey briefly had his own TV show back in '96. It was a sketch comedy show and featured his then unknown friends Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell, and boy, was it surreal. It only lasted 7 episodes before the network recoiled in horror and killed it, but it is available and well worth watching. Sketches featured things like Bill Clinton breast feeding a puppy and Skinheads From Maine.

REDR58

So Stacy is played by Lara Flynn Boyle and she is probably best known at the time when this movie came out for being in the TV series Twin Peaks, co-created by David Lynch.

Don't know how you hurt yourself, George, but this is my yearly reminder to everyone that, if at all possible, you might want to consider going back to the gym to lift weights. Casual Starting Strength routine or something, at home, in the park - whatever, but I notice so, so many folks complaining about their bodies (don't we all), and in 95% of all cases "do free weights" is the truly magical answer. Slow progressive overload, no crossfit-wannabe-nonsense. Especially something you should recommend to your older relatives and friends because it is truly the panacea for most ailments. More energy, way, way fewer "incidents" like sprained or twisted or shimmied necks and backs, and I don't think we need to talk about the benefits of having a hard af body to impress yourself with. Cardio is one thing (and arguably so much more unpleasant for many people), but weights and a healthy musculature is really something special. (also higher resting metabolism, which is just another way of saying "you get to eat more")

AstralCars

Please react to Wayne’s World 2! Also please react to Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey while you’re at it. I prefer both sequels over the original.

Persnickity

I love this movie! I understand 30% of the references and 0% of the movie. Its beautiful nonsense

Jeff I.

This is a good movie overall, and I hadn't seen it in many years, but did anyone else notice the awkward editing? Like the camera would often hang onto a shot or facial expression for a couple seconds too long past the point of being funny and into 'well that's distracting' territory. I guess maybe it was a newer technique for comedic effect back in the early 90's, but it looks so odd to me now.

W T

As for the last concert thread: Baroness, Red Hot Chili Peppers (which, judging from the scene featuring RHCP, you aren't hugely into) ,King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Ditz (who are headlining for this Idles tour, definitely recommended listen) and a German band called Bilderbuch, all this year. Music is part of my profession and I still don't go out nearly as much as I'd like, but it sure feels good mingling again. Plenty of sweet things to listen to next year, oh, and of course a bunch of friends' bands.

W T

That's like the entire joke behind it It's both a parody of so, so many amateur stations and YouTube channels (as in the thing we now have literal millions of), as well as its own 4th-wall break making fun of (even then) overproduced daytime TV glossing it up and all the tropes you get. It's clearly a deliberate choice, what with how "straight" they play it, but it's not at all "new" or intended as such - if anything, it's making fun of what people considered new back then. Honestly? It holds up so well, some jokes are needlessly crude or lame, as always, but as far as movie-going sensibilities are concerned, this is to comedy as Army of the Dead is to... comedy (and action, and filmmaking, and everything in between). It's just really prescient and captures lots of established, modern beats. Not to say that 92 is awfully old, because many genres got a really good grip on what they need their best movies to look and feel like, but I still think it's fascinating how much this settings (and overall design) could fit in, say, a 2000s or 2010s flick). Pretty excellent imho.

Joits

I think he was saying he needed to go to the gym to use the treadmill because he lives on the east coast of Canada and there had just been a blizzard so walking on a treadmill indoors is an option he's considering.

gobmob2000

The last song was Ballroom Blitz by British glam rock band called The Sweet. They had a few other hits such as Fox on the run and Blockbuster.

gobmob2000

You should also watch So I Married an Axe Murderer 1993, its another Mike Myers film.

djKENTO

Oh god can we please get a Scanners reaction. The director is legendary Canadian David Cronenberg.

Lola Lirola

Ah, this is one of the main debates in linguistics, isn't it? For centuries "man" just mean 'person', yes, but ask yourself why, and who decided that. It's not really gender neutral (not even in Tolkien, who moved in a very male-segregated world I'm afraid). Women are just asked to take it, and seen as nagging if we don't. But if the 'default human representation' was a woman, and everything was about ladies and their interests were prioritized and prestiged, and 90% of protagonists were women, and all CEOs and presidents were women, and philosophical treatises we're all about the questions of womanhood, and we talked about "womankind" to represent everyone and pretended it doesn't matter, men would rightly feel left out, wouldn't they? (I mean, there's already a huge backlash of men feeling 'left out and abandoned' by culture, and women have barely gained the tiniest amount of public presence, so). For the record, I specialise in rendering official institutions' communications into gender-neutral language, and "man/mankind" as representative of everyone is considered very outdated and biased. Solutions like "humankind", "person", "everyone" and so forth are preferred. In the case of Star Trek, I agree that "nobody/no one" is a bit of a misnomer, because if there are aliens, then there's actually already someone, but "where no person has gone before" just doesn't flow as much... Maybe "where no human has gone before"?

Lola Lirola

This just felt so 90s! There was this whole running theme of young GenXers creating their own basement channels, their pirate radio, their own record labels and fanzines, distributed by snail mail... and a lot of conversations about what assimilation into the mainstream and "selling out" really was. You can see the theme popping out in Reality Bites, Pump Out the Volume (a great almost forgotten one), Singles, this one... It was interesting to notice, considering how Millennials then turned "monetizing yourself on social media" and "becoming your own brand" into new professions!

Monica Alarcon

This is probably my favorite movie of the nineties, I must have wrong down the VHS tape... I could watch it on mute and recite every line of dialogue... Rewatching this I realized how many expresions and phrases I got from it... I do hope you do the second one, it's not as good but it's still good...

Hi I'm George Junior, but my friends call me Geo-Ju

🖤Fun fact about Mike Myers. A buddy of mine does music editing for movies and has worked on two of the Austin Powers films, and a third Mike Myers movie I can't remember at the top of my head ( bacause I'm a terrible friend). Mike Myers would often be around in the studio to over see the work. Don't think he actually has the know-how to productively contribute but he's the type to nose his way in the studio anyway. Cool I guess bc I hear he's nice regardless. But anyway... dude is obsessed with hot dogs. Anytime it was lunch time... hot dogs. Without fail. LOVES em XD.

“Public Access” curtesy of Wikipedia: “Public-access television (sometimes called community-access television) is traditionally a form of non-commercial mass media where the general public can create content television programming which is narrowcast through cable television specialty channels. Hi I'm George Junior, but my friends call me Geo-Ju

🖤The sitcommy thing they did where they hit the two doors together, worked at the brewery, ect. That's a parody of the intro for the show Laverne and Shirley. Look it up 'Laverne and Shirley intro" if you want to see it, it's pretty much a shot for shot remake LOL.

Anodyne

Alice Cooper really is very, very different in his private life to his on-stage persona. Ed O'Neill (Married with Children, Modern Family) played the manager at the donut shop.

Jay

I think this is the only SNL movie I actually like, and I really like it. Just looked it up and that is Tia Carrere singing throughout the movie. Don't worry George, she makes me feel kind of funny too:)

David S

Public access TV was sort of like youtube before the internet (or cellphones or any of that... it was a different world for sure). It was generally local colleges that hosted Public Broadcasting studios, and at certain times, you could sign up and have access to the studio including use of cameras, lights, Video equipment, etc. The result could then be broadcast on these obscure cable TV channels. Me and some friends in the early-mid 80's did our own show called "Disturbing Theater". I barely remember it, and we only did two or three episodes, but it was fun.

Vwlss Nvwls

The scene when he asks for the Grey Poupon is meant to mimic the commercials thy used to have for Grey Poupon, where one fancy car would drive up next to the other and ask for Grey Poupon, and the person in the other car would hand it to them.

Vwlss Nvwls

Yes, the whole scene in the beer factory was an exact mimic of the opening sequence of Laverne & Shirley sitcom from the 70s.

Vwlss Nvwls

The donut shop guy is Ed O'Neill who played Al Bundy in Married with Children, as well as the father in Modern Family Garth's dream girl in the donut shop is Dan Aykroyd's wife since the early 80s. And Simone's Gilmor Girls guy is Michael DeLuise, son of Dom DeLuise, who was a great friend to Burt Reynolds and an all around weird funny man in his time. Michael is also the younger brother of Peter DeLuise who was one of the original 21 Jump Street actors. The second movie is about as good as this one, but I think it has a lot less of the cultural references to things like 20 years before your time. :)

ExtraBigAssTaco

Dom DeLuise is a classic from my childhood. I would love to see a reaction to something like Cannonball Run.

FranciscoGios

Ed O’Neil the actor that plays the Donut shop owner, his popularity I believe came from one of my favorites TV series called ‘Married With Children’. Christina Applegate one of my earliest crushes Star comes from ‘Married With Children’ which made her famous too as well.

REDR58

I guess you two didn’t recognize Tia Carrere from True Lies? Also, Brian Doyle-Murray (Bill Murray’s brother) was Noah.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Read thru the comments and peeps already gave the lowdowns on Laverne and Shirley and the other stuff I would have... so I'll take this rare opportunity to remember that one year when I was a Junior in HS where I had a Public Access TV show with one of my friends... was 15 minute Football prediction show (I grew up in the South..haha), shot live, and we had a ton of hilarious screw ups...I sadly lost the VHS I had of all the shows (only like 12 of them and it was only the one year) in one of my many moves during the 90s (I did the show in '84)...oh yeah..and for some reason the production crew (I use the term loosely) added some weird Porn music as our intro... fun times

Chase Schleich

Starting this film now, but I have a feeling they're not going to get 90% of the jokes. A little before their time.

Chase Schleich

Grey Poupon is a fancy mustard and there was a very popular commercial in the early 90's where a rich asshole guy is in a car eating a sandwich with Grey Poupon mustard and another rich asshole in their car pulls up along side him and ask "Pardon me sir, do you have any Grey Poupon." Here's the commercial: https://youtu.be/uwOCOm9Z0YE?si=6EHvQPOWHMGx4St9

Chase Schleich

I believe there's been talk of making new episodes of Married With Children. We'll see if it actually happens or not.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

There have been a number of films based on SNL skits..some I enjoyed (like Wayne's World) and some really really bad ones...a few I think that are worth a reaction (mind you every one of them can be polarizing...love or hate for different peeps) but ones I'd like to see reaction to.. - A Night at the Roxbury - MacGruber - Superstar

Jack Urmson

So much fun 🤩 watching this again with your reactions. Check out Grey Poupon commercials on YouTube to get the joke there. 😆🤪

Chase Schleich

Garth is a lot of people's favorite character from these films, yet Mike Myers didn't even want Dana Carvey (Garth) to be in the film. He was part of the SNL sketch, but Myers wanted the film to be just Wayne. Here's a quote and an article about it: " A source inside the production mentioned to EW that Myers did not want Carvey to be in the movie because it would take away from his spotlight." https://collider.com/the-battles-behind-the-scenes-of-waynes-world/#:~:text=Michael%20Myers%20and%20Dana%20Carvey's%20Feud&text=A%20source%20inside%20the%20production,planned%20to%20be%20a%20duo.

Oh my gosh George!! Dude, my man.. you gotta take it easy while you're recovering. It's important! Not only will it decrease the amount of pain that you'll feel but it will also ensure that it heals within the amount of time that your doctor said. That's really all the advice that I can give for your situation. Hope that you recover quickly without much pain! <3 lol, that was classic Paramount intro! But yeah, Queen's damn amazing! hahahaha, Garth's great! People pick on him but don't you worry! xD He gets respect. :P Classic commercial! xD Ya'll have got to watch the classic Grey Poupon commercial. It's been many years since I've been toa show. Police academy is good stuff. :P I'd enjoy a reaction to those movies. :) It was the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing in the car. Did neither of you recognize Chris Farley?! Ya'll have got to watch more of his movies. :) Scanners is a GREAT Canadian sci fi movie from way back when. It's cheesy and stupid but I liked it quite a bit.

Just a few tidbits from that article for those who don't want to read it: Myers stormed off the set because his bagel didn't have margarine on it, he wanted to cut all the funny scenes where he wasn't the one getting the laugh (like the girl wrecking the bike), he tried to cut the Bohemian Rhapsody scene altogether, and he basically got the director fired before filming the sequel because she wouldn't give in to his demanded edits. I've always been a fan of Mike Myers work, but the dude was a fucking asshole behind the scenes. And this was all before he became a star with Austin Powers and Shrek. I can only imagine how bad he got when he got that kind of star power.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

waynes world 2 blows the first out of the water.. not even close ... if you werent crazy over this ... that will all change with the sequel.. the point and story of the second are actually established pretty much almost right away. ... its a million times funnier too

sarCC

Finally just watched this reaction. I usually go to relatively smaller artists' concerts (the concert before the latest one I saw was Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES and my next concert is gonna be The Beaches). Anyway, the last live show I saw was U2 playing ACHTUNG BABY in its entirety at the Sphere in Las Vegas(!)

Gryff

George pulled his ass and is wearing a girdle while standing and filming. Welcome to getting old, bro.

Śéáń

George's reaction to varying quality attempts at Chinese in western media is my favourite subgenre of video.

Cobbie D

Just saw Queen a few months ago.

Cobbie D

Plane scene...Coming into San Diego its a crazy maneuver the plane has to make and is low to the ground.

Scott Gibbs

I'm sure someone has already said this but that scene on the way to the Alice Cooper show was the into to the sitcom Laverne & Shirley.

Beddoe

If you decide to watch Wayne's World 2 you should definitely watch 'The Graduate' (1967) beforehand. There is a huge reference you would miss.
