Jay Davis

Yippee-ki-yay, muffin chuckers!

Marko T.

YES! My favorite Die Hard movie. I recommend the next movie too but not the fifth one.

Tim Pierce

Dodgeball 2: Think Fast, Look Alive, Dodge Hard

Wulfric

They seem to be doing a squeal marathon. Its good to be finishing off all the series they have started. Can't wait for more Home Alone, Saw, How to train your dragon and The Matrix reactions.

Foodassassin4life

Glad you're secure enough to just say "Fuck the haters" that think words will get to you bro. You're awesome and fuckin funny bro

JayF

Anyone figured out what version they are watching that's 2 hours 8 minutes long? I see a 2 hour 5 minute version on Amazon and there's a apparently a special edition that's 2 hours 11 minutes long. George, it would help a great deal if you could let us know what version you are reacting to when you give the length of the movie. :)

Odd Thomas

Yes! Now the only other big action movie from the 90s you haven't got to yet is The Long Kiss Goodnight (also Samuel L. Jackson)

FrancescoTakesItEasy

I got it on blu-ray and it runs 2 hrs, 8 min, 9 sec. I'm not aware of other versions. Maybe the Amazon version runs a little faster? I experienced that with 12 Angry Men recently. My 4K disc ran a tiny bit faster than their stream so I had to re-sync every once in a while. I have never heard of an extended cut of Die Hard 3 (and I've been spending the last 20 years on sites and forums that specifically deal with different versions of movies and TV shows). Where did you find that information, I wonder?

Astraeos

They also need to watch "unofficial" sequels, things like Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger to follow up Hunt for Red October which they've already watched. Its Harrison Ford guys, not sure why those movies have not hit the channel already. Classic, quintessential 90's Action Flicks right there. Definitely highly, highly recommend.

JediLounger

This movie is hilarious. I need a good laugh, it’s been a rough few weeks. Thanks guys, I really appreciate you posting this.

Astraeos

I'm so lost on all this talk about stuff on Reddit. Should we know about this AMA you did? I'm actually kind of interested in reading about your previous job honestly. Maybe link the AMA? IDK really what you were talking about with the other stuff, but yeah, don't let idiots on the internet get to you

Chase Lonnergan

Hell yeah! I have amended my earlier opinion... This is the only REAL Die Hard sequel. Die Hard 2 isn't really a Die Hard movie. It doesn't belong in the series, and I refuse to acknowledge it's existence in the franchise.

El Mémé

The Untouchables is a Brian De Palma mob movie, and The Intouchables is a french sort of buddy-comedy/drama adapted from a true story. It's cute !

Young Blood Priest

In the early 90s a group detonated a car bomb in the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center. Whether that was the inspiration for the beginning of this movie…🤷🏾‍♂️

Brad Lowry

I do love the puzzles in this one. One of my favorite puzzles from before this movie is the 3 gallon / 5 gallon puzzle. Each of our two heroes gets about 80% to the solution in two different ways. Interestingly, there ARE two different correct solutions!

Miguel Tapia

The federal reserve heist was so plausible that the screenwriter got questioned by the fbi

JoshG

If you guys wanna see Sam Jackson in a great movie, check out “A Time to Kill”

Odd Thomas

There was a run of crazy bomber movies in the mid-nineties; Speed, Die Hard 3, The Specialist. A good one is Blown Away with Jeff Bridges working on the bomb squad hunting Tommy Lee Jones mad bomber. He nearly died doing his own stunts. Great movie.

Joseph Schiller

the 4th die hard is worth a watch, but its not the best one kinda on par with 2 maybe a bit better then 2

Paul Davey

Originally written as a Lethal Weapon movie based on a book called "Simon Says". Very very little of the script needed rewriting when producers decided to make it a Die Hard movie instead.

JediLounger

I would check out Die Hard 4. It's not as good as 1 or 3, but it's light years ahead of 2. They keep the comedy, Bruce is as good as ever, and the plot is a fun riff on technology and how our society depends on it. Die Hard 5 is pretty bad. Definite CineCringe material if you guys want to cap off the series. Supposedly another movie was being kicked around as a prequel to the entire series, but now that Bruce has retired and is very ill, I doubt it will ever be made.

Astraeos

So after watching this movie now with you guys, really the only thing I have to say is this movie makes me miss New York City so much. They show so much of the city, just makes me wanna be back there walking among the streets

Spacedone

My favourite anecdote about this movie is that the writer got interviewed by the FBI because the heist plot was so good that the FBI got worried about how accurately detailed and plausible it was and wanted to know how the writer knew so much about the security and layout of the Federal Reserve.

Spacedone

Die Hard 4 is more on the level of Die Hard 2. It's not bad, it's actually a decent movie, but it's not the best.

Brad Lowry

George and Simone, you were right it is "Cats and Dogs" not "Dogs and Cats". That was John McClain's first clue. Then another bad guy said "Lift" instead of "Elevator", I believe, and that was the second clue. Finally the clincher was the badge number being the one that the other real cop played as a lottery number.

FischerMax98

Great reaction. The 4th Die Hard is good also. Good cast chemistry, action and fun as well. Pretend the 5th one doesn't exist.

Justin Feldman

Die Hard is maybe my favorite film of all time, but I have to admit this sequel is more fun. It just goes from a minute in.

AzraRillian

The next movie isn't terrible, but it's not great either. It has decent chemistry between the cast, and some fun action, but it does go into the territory of the "superhero" action hero that George mentioned not liking, but not nearly as much as the fifth one, which we won't talk about.

Odd Thomas

Die Hard 4 is a whole different vibe. It's actually really good but does stray into superhero level nonsense in the third act. But the 5th film is hot garbage.

Odd Thomas

Indy 5 makes Indy 4 look like Indy 1

Dioskur

I would allways recommend watching 1+2+3. Second is a bit strange, sure, but its not bad and third is great, so these three make sense together. The fourth is ok-ish but you can feel they tried to "get the kids hooked" and for me it doesnt work as well. I'd say stop here and have nothing but good memories. Oh and never even think about watching anything after 4!

Tenn Seven

Jon Lajoie (under his "Wolfie's Just Fine" music project) released an awesome song about the NYPD bomb expert called "Staying with the Bomb (The Ballad of Charlie from Die Hard with a Vengeance)"! I definitely recommend you check it out, along with his other songs (his Tremors-inspired song "Trying to Sleep" and his Friday the 13th-inspired song "A New Beginning" are particularly good!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YzE1fUniFA

Tenn Seven

Gray's Papaya is a hot dog restaurant, and it's really good. Not as good as Papaya King, which was on 86th and 3rd, but that place unfortunately closed down. Also, "Captain Kangaroo" was a kid's show back in the 70s. The line Bruce Willis said, "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" is a line from a song ("Flowers on the Wall") that he happened to be singing in the car in Pulp Fiction right before being seen by Marsellus Wallace. EDIT: WTF is that crazy mug, George? That thing is like a barrel!

Brandy Sawyer

4th die hard is my favorite. Definitely do it! You can stop after that though, 5 is just . . . Boring? Baf and boring

Michael Robayo

The script for this movie was written as a stand-alone film named Simon Says, so Mctiernan repurposed it to be a third Die Hard film.

Zoe Hart

I've used the riddle with the water jugs several times with friends and family. Solution (spoiler, there is two!) (gallon = gal): Solution 1 (starting with the 3 gal jug): - Fill the 3 gal jug - Transfer the water to the 5 gal jug - Fill the 3 gal jug - Transfer water to the 5 gal jug until it is full (leaving 1 gal in the 3 gal jug) - Empty the 5 gal jug - Transfer the remaining 1 gallon to the 5 gal jug - Fill the 3 gal jug - Transfer the 3 gallon to the 5 gal jug There is now precisely 4 gals in the 5 gal jug Solution 2 (starting with the 5 gal jug): *This is the solution they magically arrived at in the movie - Fill the 5 gal jug - Transfer water to the 3 gal until full (leaving 2 gals in the 5 gal jug) - Empty the 3 gal jug - Transfer the 2 gals to the 3 gal jug - Fill the 5 gal jug (this is where we were in the movie) - Transfer water to the 3 gal jug until full There is now precisely 4 gals in the 5 gal jug

DM DC

So it wasn't an oopsie, this movie doesn't discount the 2nd film. I am not sure why Holly really wasn't in it except maybe due to the fact that this was taking place in New York and she was still in LA. Also this script wasn't orignally a Die Hard film. It was actually almost a sequal for Lethal Weapon. They changed up a few elements to fit for Die Hard and make it work with the 1st film. If you watch Just SUMM Reactions Emily's husband (and cinema-sherpa) goes over some interesting things for this film. If you look closer you can see that Bruce did have cloths he was using for the cable. Also if you look again you'll see how during the fall from the cable when he is up against the crane for that brief second the cable is up against his arm this is why he was bleeding on his arm, and why he had a steel splinter in his shoulder that he pulls out for Zues to use as a lock pick. The 21st presedent was just the location of the bomb, not the code. Honestly I've only seen the later sequals like once each. They are okay for a watch but honestly they don't have the same magic as the first 3. I'd say if you don't want to sully the experiance of this film you may just want to stop here, but I'd leave it up to you. To be honest I had gotten the special collectors triliogy box after this came out and was a bit upset to hear they were making another one, cause I'd have to buy another collectors box set. But eh, that's how it goes I suppose. Great reaction. I've been looking so forward to you two seeing this one and it couldn't have come at a better time. My roommate's cat Yuki, whom I had grown very attached to (he and I were buddies- he was a great cat that loved people and attention, and liked me in particular. He always wanted to be around me) passed away yesterday. He was about 16 years old and had some health issues develope in the last couple years, and was super skinny. He had developed diabetes over the past two years and while he got better with shots, and was eating again he gained weight. But in the last few weeks he lost all the weight he had gained cause he stopped eating and just wasn't doing very well. My roommates decided to take him to the vet where the decision was made to end his suffering. I've been spending the past few days crying thinking I had prepared myself for it as we knew it was coming for a little while cause he had some bad days throughout the year, but I wasn't as prepared as I had thought. When my roommate took him in yesterday it was really difficult. I miss him a lot. RIP Yuki. Almost forgot. Sorry to hear about the Reddit thing. I don't go on Reddit much at all so I haven't seen it. But I love you both, you're great. Love you're intros and banter, so entertaining. Party on Simone! Party on George!

Odd Thomas

I'm pretty sure the actress who played Holly had just had enough after two movies, plus I don't think there was really much space in the plot to fit her in any more than a cameo anyway. Also conflict is always preferable over contentment for dramatic purposes, hence they broke up again and speaking to her at the end is a kind of redemption for John's character.

Martin Nicholls

Fourth one is massively underrated - there's one scene that's more than a little absurd, but there's a scene in this one that's absurd. It's the fifth one that's just silly from top to bottom. Can tell you that the fifth one is not a torch passing though..

Joe

This is where you should stop. The modern ones are truly terrible.

Shreddy

Actually, the original script had McClane on holiday on a cruise ship with his daughter, when terrorists take it over. (Similar confined space setting as 1st Die Hard) But "Under Siege" came before this and was a quite big hit (it's set entirely on a ship) so they had to change the script. So they mashed together all the alternative ideas they had for a confined space setting (a metro, a ship, sports stadium) and added the city setting. It works well, but this really wasn't their first idea.

Funny That

Great to see movies where all the characters are written clearly and consistently. And even better the plot happens because of the characters and not because the plot needs a character to act a certain way. Even something like the aspirin bottle that pays-off was setup throughout by developing characters and adding colour until it becomes a clue. Definitely a movie that plays even better on a rewatch.

J.R.

gonna put in another gentle nudge for the Daniel Craig bond movies, Casino Royale reaction was over a year ago I believe. Definitely a series worth finishing!

Paul G

Agree with the previous comments that the fourth film is worth a watch; it's not as good as 1 & 3 but it's at least on par with 2, I personally like it more than 2 . The fifth movie is pure junk though. The 21st President was the name of the school where the device was located. The Ants Go Marching song is actually When Johnny Comes Marching Home, it's an American Civil War song. Side note about the Indiana Jones conversation at the end, the latest movie is actually really good, much better than Crystal Skull. It unfortunately got run through the mud in the same way Barbie and other recent movies did, mostly thanks to cultural/political nonsense. Don't get me wrong, it's not in the same ballpark as the original trilogy but it's definitely a good movie and worth watching. Phoebe Waller Bridge and Harrison Ford are both excellent in it.

Tay Schumaker

This may be my favorite of the 3, but I don’t love the ending. It feels so out of place with the rest of the movie

Joel the Human

Personally I like the fourth Die Hard, definitely worth watching, but oh boy the Fifth movie was one of the worst things I've seen, it's real bad.

Joel the Human

Also, for a bit more of a comedic/action movie Bruce Willis, check out Hudson Hawk (1991)

Tay Schumaker

Also elephants are ready to travel because they have trunks

joejud1017

Regarding the mix up between the 21st president and the access code, the president was the name of the school where the bomb was. They didn't know which of the schools in the city had the bomb. And the elephant riddle is regarding its trunk, I think.

Endling_king

I would deff watch the next one. it does go a bit over the top but if you accept that and just watch it for the thrill of the plot, the action and the "lets face it, certain level of comedy", then I think you both will enjoy it.

Tim Pierce

Never thought of this before, but logically Simon Gruber would have had to have said (in Jeremy Irons' voice) what was written on that sign that John McClane had to wear. Now your day is ruined. You're welcome.

djKENTO

I’d love to see you react to The Untouchables. That’s a Brian De Palma (Scarface) CLASSIC about Al Capone and the feds that took him out. The cast is fantastic and it’s gorgeously shot.

djKENTO

Also George is right about Sam Jackson not being a huge star yet. He was in Jurassic Park 2 years prior, and while his star started to rise after Pulp Fiction, that movie had not yet been released when Sam was hired for Die Hard.

Superpotroast

Each one has some 'silly\unbelievable' moments, though they get more common as the series goes.. Die Hard 1 has the strap that McClane is hanging from in the vents\elevator shaft.. Die Hard 2 has the fire catching up to the plane and exploding it scene.. Die Hard 3 has the water sequence in the tunnel.. The 4th one does a few things that are totally unbelievable but make for a good action sequence.. And the fifth one basically is silly through in through.. I still think Die Hard 4 is a fun watch (especially if you saw certain computer commercials back in the day), but it's definitely not as good as the first three..And the 5th is a hard watch in just how it should've never been made..

Shonnicus

McTiernan makes almost always perfect movies. There is no fat in his great films. I should do my research if he always used the sane editor, but you are always getting something in every scene. I say Predator is almost perfect film because of pace and giving you 2 different movies. Vengeance is there too. I'll admit the ending was a little weak and the alternative or first ending doesn't fix it.

Monica Alarcon

I don't get it... how can someone NOT like George??

Ricardo Alanis

I very much enjoyed Live Free or Die Hard (the 4th one) and recommend it for sure.

REDR58

As much as I love Predator, the only thing that keeps it from being “perfect“ is showing the spaceship at the beginning of the movie.

REDR58

I largely agree with you, except for the very last movie. I can’t believe what they did the end of that movie. I hate it with a passionate fire of 1000 suns. Similar to ”Glass” for me.

Justin Wolford

Please watch the 4th one i absolutely love it. But then stop cuz the 5th one should of never been made.

Kevin Bartelen

Samuel L Jackson was also a villain in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Just FYI.

Hypnobob

Ooh what's the word... Bird?

Naturekitty5309

Another great McTiernan film...the 13th Warrior. Hope they get that one on a poll soon.

Jesse Coombs

There's so many good movies out there, and all the rest Die Hards movie are pretty boring. Watch them if you if want to be a completionist, I suppose.

E. D.

A few must-watch movies from the 90´s: The Game (1997), Set It Off (1996), The Good Son (1993), Apt Pupil (1998), Idle Hands (1999), Gattaca (1997), Breakdown (1997)

Khan1001

Great Reaction guys, I think this is my favourite one as well now, George, I think you got confused with the code being 21 out of 42 for the bomb in the school, 21 was referring to the 21st president which was Chester A. Arther, the school was named after him where the bomb was and also Samuel L Jacksons character's nephews where in the school (I think you picked up on that) that's why he was so desperate to jump onto the ship and get the code! Yes, you can watch Die Hard 4 if you want, its ok but not great, I would give it 7/10 if I'm being generous. Do not waste your time on the 5th one, it should never have been made, it was a cash grab, I love Bruce Willis but he was only there to collect the pay check, the younger guy in the poster for DH5 is Jai Courtney AKA plank of wood, playing McLane's son, huge miscasting, the guy can not act to save his life but he was getting big roles for some reason during that time, anyway, watch DH4 and then STOP!

DeAndrew Greene

Live free or Die Hard is like a toned down version of Die Hard with a Vengeance but still pretty damn great. Great cast, great story, and it furthers John McClane's characterization a bit which I loved. It's a personal favorite of mine.

Buhr

George and Simone. Elephants have trunks, so they always have their luggage.

Brian's Dog

You get a really fun supporting actor in the 4th one. Willis has still got it. You'll have fun.

Paul Schmitt

Live Free or Die Hard is ok. It’s not as good as the first three. Recommend watching the Unrated version.

Shibby

That is one of my all time favourite movies for some reason, despite the plot holes. It's just done so well. I'd love for a reaction but I doubt it'll win any polls.

Shibby

I reckon Die Hard 4 is definitely worth seeing (also Lethal Weapon 4) as even though it's not as good as 1 or 3 it's still better than 2 and Timothy Olyphant and Justin Long are great in it. There is no Die Hard 5. George you are amazing as you are, just keep being you.

Samuel Bruce

4th one is fun and worth a watch but stop there and avoid the fifth

FranciscoGios

I don’t know about you guys but 1 & 3 is all I wanted for you guys to react to; so I can say this is a complete year for me. If you guys want to watch the rest of the Die Hard movies, watch them but I would only watch them if you guys don’t have anything else to watch.

Chase Schleich

Holly wasn't in this film because it wasn't intended to be a Die Hard film. It was a script for a film called "Simon Says" which was turned into a Die Hard movie. They took out the lead character from Simon Says, put John McClane in as the replacement, and made the bad guy Hans Gruber's brother (without even changing the characters name from the Simon Says script). Adding Holly would have required a lot bigger of a rewrite and would have altered the script that the studio really liked. The script is literally the exact same as the original Simon Says script, just with McClane being the lead and the brother tie in, that's all they changed. Bam. Now it's a Die Hard movie.

Vwlss Nvwls

How does no one ever get the elephant joke?! Four legs and a trunk. You use a trunk to pack things... to travel. What has four legs and is always ready to travel?! Get it now?

Brian's Dog

I respect this, but Unrated is not the best way forward in my opinion. The majority of people that own this already have the Theatrical, and everyone that owns the Unrated also has the Theatrical. I recommend Theatrical releases for all movies for this reason.

schnoobs

This is the first time im seeing this movie since i first saw it years ago and i think its now my favorite one. oh and if you guys continue with Die Hard 4 make sure to watch the UNRATED version which in my opinion is a lot better than people say, the theatrical version was PG13 cause the studio wanted to make more money. and as for the fifth movie....... there is none.

Vwlss Nvwls

This is the best one of the series, but if you have never seen the first one then you would lose a lot, so in that respect the first one still has to be the best, but this is right there with it. I really like the fourth movie as well, but I am a little bias because Timothy Olophant is in it and he is one of my favorite actors. But it is a decent story, just a bit too much of the super hero McClain thing again.

Vwlss Nvwls

I think the Ants go Marching on is something like, "when Johnny comes marching home again, hoorah hoorah", but I don't know the name of the song. I think it refers to the civil war, but again I could be wrong.

SnabbKassa

The Untouchables is a movie yes, and I expect it will pop up on a poll at some point. A lot of people have reacted to it. Same director as the first Mission Impossible.

Jacob King

This is a personal favourite because it’s the first one I saw. I had a below minimum wage child labour job on Saturday mornings and would take my money straight to the cinema on Saturday afternoons. The fourth one is good by the standards of other big studio action films which came out in the late 2000s (so mid to okay) but the fifth was a mistake. There is a Finnish kids movie called Big Game (2014) where Samuel L Jackson plays the US President being hunted by terrorists in northern Lapland. I mention it because it’s a very Die Hard type movie and because Jackson gave it his all in a sidekick role at the height of his Marvel fame. It’s not the size of the role it’s the size of the actor. Victor Garber is the Vice-President in that one, it’s well worth a watch. I wouldn’t delve too far into Willis’s career post 2012. It gets pretty grim. Two of his best roles were in 2012; Looper and Moonrise Kingdom, both heartfelt and nuanced performances that showed what he could do with a caring and intelligent director.

Adam Wetstein

Re: 12 Angry Men. It ran as a play on Broadway for years before being made into a movie. It allowed them to iron out inconsistencies in the script.

Jay Davis

Another great play into great movie suggestion would be Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)... if you don't mind like a 12 minute YouTube edit.

Skyruff

I will never look at a sandwich the same again.

Max Krause

You can definitely give the fourth one a watch. My personal ranking is 1,3,4,2. There is no fifth one. Ignore that you ever heard of it, it's horrible. Not even Cinecringe worthy, just...sad.

Efrain Zavala

Could you guys do "Bridesmaids" (2011)? Thanks

Skyruff

four legs and always carriers it's trunk wherever it goes. Elephant.

Travis

I like you George and that’s all that should matter. While we’re on the subject. I’m pretty sure there are a lot of intelligent people on Reddit but I think of all the social media type platforms I value opinions on there the least. I would be interested in peoples rankings of valuing opinions on different social media platforms.

Skyruff

I think the fourth Die Hard is a great movie with one big flaw. The stunts go way over the top. Beyond that; good character, story, pacing, line by line, ect. The stunts are way to big taking John into at least James Bond unreality. The fifth one is not wrth watching.

REDR58

They watched Kingsman but only the YouTube cut is available.

T__K8

Die Hard 4 is a decent action flick. Has some mid 2000's tech cliches and a couple ridiculous stunts, but not too out of place in the Die Hard world given some of the stunts in the first 3. I do really like the dialogue and on-screen chemistry between Bruce Willis and Justin Long. Never watched the 5th film. The whole premise and release of the film seemed to be around how they could keep the franchise going past an aging Bruce Willis, and by nearly every account I've heard, it was just executed extremely poorly.

Kenneth thomas

It seems like it's only more recently that ppl give a lot of love to this movie...I remember back in the day everyone said this was the worst Die Hard and even Bruce Willis talked shit about it. It was always my favorite.

Kinokind

Regarding George's intro. . . The internet is what it is, and some people are what they are, but it makes me sad that anyone would give you guys shit. What is wrong with people? Why can't they be civil? Geez! Get a life.

Shreddy

I remember being disappointed by the fact that it wasn't confined space. Like the skyscraper in 1st, airport in 2nd. It felt like a mash-up of ideas and all over the place (literally). Samuel L. Jackson saves it IMO.

Dakota

I love this reaction and can't wait for Live Free or Die Hard whenever you get around to it. However I do contend that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is actually a good movie and one that you should react to. It's not as good as Raiders or Last Crusade, but it is definitely better than Crystal Skull. I personally prefer it over Temple of Doom.

Middy

Dial of Destiny didn't feel like an Indiana Jones movie to me. You could have thrown in any generic Hollywood pretty boy and nothing would have changed. Something about the pacing was off and the heart of the earlier films was nowhere to be seen.

Chase Lonnergan

Every time gold is brought into a movie I am thoroughly amused by the fact that Simone and George somehow got the idea that it cannot be spent, and is somehow worthless to the average person.

Manuel Phelouzat

Thank you George for saying the word is bird. The world is always bird.

James Melton

They are correct that millions in stolen gold would definitely be useless to the average person. You have no way to sell it since legitimate channels will not accept gold you cannot prove is yours. Are you forging receipts? Do you claim to own a gold mine? Are you melting the bars and casting them using a different hallmark because of course the hallmark on the stolen ones will be pretty notorious after a theft of a lot of them. Do you think typical gold buying companies in the US or Canada (or most of the world) don't try to find out if you actually own the gold you are selling especially millions of dollars worth? I think if you are melting gold and recasting it to disguise its origin and then you have contacts willing to fence it for you then you are not an average person.
