Byron

Harley Quinn wasn’t a thing until the 1990s animated series

dieselbeast

Simone is very beautiful that goes without saying but that thumbnail is what Nightmares are made of lmao 👀😂

Christina Doxstader

Simone's realization was hilarious. It would be cool if you keep watching this series even though Keaton is replaced in the third movie, they're all still worth a watch,

Gavin Kinsey

When this came out it felt dark and gritty because we were comparing it to the 60s Adam West batman. Looking back it seems campy but at the time it felt like a much more serious portrayal, while keeping some campy humour.

Byron

Jack Nicholson was proud of being the Joker and was pretty salty about Heath Ledger being cast instead of him

Jeff K

It’s funny, the podcast Newcomers with Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus just covered this movie this past week and one of the bits of trivia they talked about that I had never heard was that after Nicholson initially passed on the role as the Joker, they offered it to Robin Williams, who had always wanted to play the role. But WB was using him as leverage, in order to get Nicholson on board. It worked, and they booted Robin from the role. He refused to work with WB again until they apologized for treating him that way.

Adam K

Vicki Vale has been a Batman love interest since the 40s. She became less prevalent in later years.

Chase Schleich

Yeah. They used Robin and a God damned insane financial offer to get Jack. He got something like $6 million up front (which was very high for the time), points on the gross, and a percentage of toy sales. That put his total pay out around $90 million. Every time that film makes $1, he gets part of it to this day. So it's way more than $90 million at this point.

Adam K

It’s funny to find it hard to believe Bruce Wayne as an unknown entity. Back in the day, the ‘reclusive billionaire’ was far more a thing than what we have today.

PIG

GREAT thumbnail

Rupert Purcat

Batman and Bruce Wayne will always be Adam West, but abd I'm surprised to say this I really enjoyed Ben Afleck in the role - wish he had done more.

Rupert Purcat

As for joker, having watched Heath Ledger in many movies since he was young - I did not recognize him at all in Joker - it was just a Physico joker. Then Cesar Romero again from the TV show - hey I'm old.

JBK405

For me, Mark Hamill is the best Joker, and Kevin Conroy is the best Batman AND Bruce Wayne. Part of it is that I think both characters work better animated than they ever will in live-action, but they also both manage to imbue the characters with so much life that nobody else has been able to replicate. Not even in the "serious" movies. Vicky Vale is an original comics character, she's been around since the '40s. She's appeared in other films and TV shows over the years, but for some reason never quite entered pop culture the way other characters do. In the comics she's a journalist and is often a love interest for Bruce Wayne, but since other love interests are more popular she's usually treated as a fake love interest (Somebody Bruce pretends to date in order to deflect suspicion ) or as a "He likes her, but doesn't LOVE her" type of character. Bruce Wayne as a sort-of unknown public figure has been used on-and-off in the comics as part of his cover. If people don't think about him at all, then they definitely won't think about him as Batman. It's been unused for a while now, ever since the '90s the comics have had him present Bruce Wayne as a Public Idiot - dating supermodels and getting drunk and sleeping through important events -- so that people never suspect. Before social media and the 24-hour news cycle it was very easy for the rich people to simply be unknown to the public. People would know that they ARE rich, but not what they did with their time or how they continued to earn money or even what they looked like.

jmundt33a

Harley Quinn was created for the animated series in 1992. She didn’t exist yet

Christopher Feiertag

I did not know how creepy Simone can look, when her face is merged with that of Nicholson´s Joker. It will haunt me forever.

Wrencher86

First off, that thumbnail. Dammit, George, you have to be stopped. Second, I grew up with this movie. I like it a lot. But... Third, Burton's portrayal of Batman has to be about the worst ever done. Batman has One Rule... but not this one! He'll murder the shit out of you at the drop of a hat! Kinda takes away the dimenisonality of the character. I do really like Keaton in he role, though. I think he does great.

Jeff K

Watching the reaction now, only a couple minutes in and… did Simone take an edible before this reaction?

Mastervodo

That thumbnail of Simone is nightmare fuel! Stop it!

Robert Cooper

I honestly think Affleck was the best portrayal of the Batman/Wayne character, at least relative to the modern comic character, he was just never in a movie with a script deserving of it.

Calvin Allen

Harely Quinn didn't exist when this movie came out

Mike Miner

In The Simpsons ep where Lisa gets braces, they directly parody the scene where Jack is with the plastic surgeon and says "The mirror!" I'm old enough to have seen this in the theater when it was released, and The Joker dancing to Prince songs was pretty cringey then, too. It's not just you, George :)

Jeff K

They also mentioned that Burton was an animator before he was a director, which I had never realized but makes SO much sense given his distinct visual style.

Jeff K

George's thumbnail game truly is second to none in the world of reactors.

JBK405

Oh, I forgot to say, I recommend watching "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm". Based on the 1990s animated series, I honestly believe that that is the single best Batman film to date. Yes, better than the Nolan films and any other "But what about..." retort you may have. Watching the animated series first will obviously make it come across even better, but it's still fantastic even on its own. It's everything a Batman film SHOULD be.

John W Foster

First, yes, Vickie Vail is from the comics (when I was young she was his most famous love interest, I think) - if you're older, it's Catwoman, which has come back in the last ten years or so.

John W Foster

Second (accidentally hit enter), the Joker and Batman creating each other was created for this movie. The old origin of the Joker (he's a character who has had a ton of origins that have changed through the years), was that he was a gangster who jumped into a vat of chemicals to escape from the Batman (which is what the origin here is going for). Third, Harley Quinn was created AFTER this (in Batman the Animated Series) - and her origin as Joker's psychiatrist didn't come around until relatively late in that series (as I recall).

Awesome80s

Harley Quinn is actually a (cool) creation of the 90's animated series.

John W Foster

I say all of this not because it matters (it doesn't), but because it's kind of a mistake to view pretty much ANY superhero (or villain) origin (or portrayal) as "correct". Most of these characters have changed a lot over the years - even the Adam West Batman is pretty true to an entire era of Batman comics, similarly, this movie is not dissimilar to how Batman and Joker were portrayed in the early 70s.

Jeff K

And on the note of how the Joker did not create Batman, he's not the guy who killed Bruce's parents. That was a very low level, down on his luck, petty criminal named Joe Chill.

John W Foster

Thank you, I forgot to mention that! The person who almost always is the one who kills Batman's parents is Joe Chill, or else they are some unnamed thug.

Jacob Lantom

Vicki vale is Gotham city's Lois lane

Happy Hanukkah

Likewise, Christopher Reeve did an excellent job of portraying Superman / Clark Kent as he was in the comics at the time, while his "successor" Dean Cain's performance in Lois & Clark was in keeping with the new representation in the comics.

Paul Schmitt

This movie is the best one out of this series, Batman Returns is too dark and disgusting.

Jeff K

I know a lot of people love Batman Returns, but I've never been a fan. Burton is just a director I don't particularly care for, because sometimes it feels, to me, like it's weird for the sake of being weird, and Batman Returns falls under that umbrella. (This is where I say I also don't particularly like Beetlejuice, much to my wife's chagrin.)

akaTheBARON

🖤That thumbnail OMG NoOoOoOoOoO LOLLLLLL. I'm just kidding, it's fine... I never sleep anyway XD Therapist: "Joker Simone isn't real... she can't get you." Then me getting notified in my email you posted your Batman reaction 😨😨😨

Happy Hanukkah

Let me reassure you: Simone isn't real. She's merely a figment of George's imagination, and we're all playing along. There, feel better? :-)

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤Oh I know. I'm just happy we've all banded together as a community to reinforce this for George. Just because a friend being imaginary doesn't mean they're not a real friend :)

Michael

I grew up with this as my Batman and the 2nd one, Returns, is so much more "Burton-y: in a great way and is probably my favorite of the pre-2000 films, with Mask of the Phantasm and the Adam West one with the dehydrated UN tied for 2nd and this and Forever tied for 3rd (Forever a bit more on nostalgia than merit). The Clooney one just never appealed even when I was 13 seeing it in the theater...

Marko T.

Actually Williams wanted to play The Riddler too and he even read part of the script I think. He wasn't happy when they cast Jim Carrey instead of him.

Jeff K

In fact, she’s the inspiration for the Pacino movie S1m0ne.

Hondo the Cat

Bruce Wayne has obviously had quite a few love interests and Vickie Vale is one of the better known ones. Slightly less well known but one of the other recurring ones is Silver St. Cloud who is known in the comics but was also in the Gotham TV show. Can't remember the actress's name. Natalie something I think. But I would say his most known love interests are obviously Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Talia al-Ghul (daughter of Ras al-Ghul, one of his most notable villains though less often portrayed in movies and really weirdly interpreted in Nolan's Batman movies). Talia al-Ghul is the mother of his son Damian so a pretty significant one. And in some versions, Selina Kyle is the mother of his daughter Helena Wayne (Huntress). Though in other versions Huntress is not his daughter. Obviously there are other love interests as needed by the story but I think Talia, Selina, Selina Kyle are the only ones who normally know his identity. Not sure about Vickie Vale. Obviously she does in this movie but I don't recall in the comics. Vickie Vale was also a character in the Arkham City game where I'm fairly sure she wasn't aware of his identity if she was even involved with Bruce at all. I think these days she's more commonly portrayed as a reporter than a photographer. Not sure. He also has a relationship with Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) in Batman Beyond the cartoon and comics which is the reason for his falling out with Nightwing, and in the Killing Joke animated movie as well. Older version of Barbara Gordon, obviously.

Hondo the Cat

I largely feel the same about the movie. Michelle Pfeifer is great in it, of course. I enjoyed it for her. But on top of just not really liking Burton's style in this (it can be good - I really liked Dark Shadows), my date when watching it was someone who had been born disabled and there are some lines from Danny Devito's Penguin that just weren't really comfortable given the circumstances (or generally). For context, I'm not an especially politically correct person and I roll my eyes at things like the new Doctor Who showrunner removing Davros from his iconic chair because 'can't have an evil wheelchair user!' But then Davros is in a chair because the character's story is about the horrors of war. Whilst Devito's lines in this were about 'being born a little different than the rest' and felt like it actually was linking disability with evil.

Hondo the Cat

I like Michael Keaton a lot as an actor, particularly now he's older as he seems to have established more presence with age. But oddly enough I think he's a decent Bruce Wayne but a pretty terrible Batman. Part of it is the suit which is just bad. But he also doesn't really have the physical power I feel the character needs. I imagine he worked better in the Flash movie where they have modern SFX and costuming to help. Still, though, for me I think Robert Pattinson is excellent as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Very much want to see more of that. Christian Bale had good presence as Batman and was an okay Bruce Wayne. Ben Affleck was decent as an older Batman but not sure the movies showed him off to best effect. Less said about George Clooney and Val Kilmer the better. (Sorry Val!)

Dwight Scarn

This movie paved the way for the Nolan Batmans & other serious superhero flicks. It was the first serious and grittier take on Batman.

John W Foster

I forgot Talia completely (which is weird, because she was the villain love interest when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s - not Catwoman). Vicki's original deal (way way way back in the beginning) was that she kept figuring out Batman was Bruce Wayne, and then they would do some shenanigans to throw her off the scent by the end of the issue. Then she'd appear again a few issues later and figure it out again, repeat. When she came back post-Crisis, I'm pretty sure she figured it out again, but obviously, like Silver, once she figures out the truth, her narrative usefulness expires. I heard she came back post-new 52 also, but I don't know if she figured it out that time or not.

Dwight Scarn

Despite the plot holes and inaccuracies of the batman character this was a classic! My first intro to Batman.

Hondo the Cat

I wouldn't want to give up Jim Carey's Riddler - I think he's spot on. The Riddler is supposed to be brilliant but not cool. Whereas the Joker is supposed to have panache. I would however, have loved to get Robin William's Joker. Jack Nicholson is obviously entertaining in the role but I think Williams would have blown us away.

Simon Pegged Me

I agree. Hamill and Conroy are the best Joker-Batman pair, but if I have to go with live-action movies, I'd go with Keaton and Joaquin Phoenix.

Nico Colaleo

To answer some quick things: Harley Quinn didn't exist yet! Until the 1993 animated series. And this is really interesting seeing you guys watch Batman movies backwards. This 1989 Batman was HUUUUUGE when it came out. It pretty much started superhero movies! Before this, Batman was pretty much known only from the campy 60s TV show, so to see it all dark and gothic was brand new at the time. There's still lots of camp in this movie though. Then Nolan took things even darker but more realistic. I think Jack Nicholson's Joker is best in terms of what the character was created as. But Leger's Joker is better in terms of creepy and sinister and a more realistic angle to take the character. MY opinion, I think Mark Hamill's Joker from the 90s animated series is a perfect blend of both.

Joshua White

This movie came out before anyone gave a damn about lore. Comic book movies weren't really a thing, with the exception of Superman, which was cool in the late 70s but was a joke well before this film came out. In 1989, this didn't feel nearly as cartoony as you're seeing it in the wake of Nolan. It felt like a gritty, adult noir, and I'm glad to say that's how it feels to me still. You guys should definitely watch Birdman now, which is Michael Keaton playing an actor who played a Batman character. Also, the Val Kilmer documentary has an interesting segment about his foray into the Batman universe.

thomas king

Nicholson was 52 when he made this movie. Keaton was 37

Adam Wetstein

i love that burton choose all the ugliest cars he could find to make Gotham look horrible

brian burke

i hope you do all the batman movies, and check out the prince soundtrack to this, especially BATDANCE , most of the music videos of it are on you tube now or other sites, pretty weird but connected to the movie and great music.

brian burke

also prince dresses up like the joker in some of the videos, its pretty wild

brian burke

those videos were really had to find anywhere for many years, but then got online a few years ago. by the way the painting the joker decides to spare is by francis bacon, i forget the name of it, but he was known for dark violent spooky art, so its interesting joker spares that one.

Haye Zeus

The best thumbnail i’ve seen in a while

sol stapleton

my Favorited joker is Cameron monahue from the Gotham tv show, my fav batman is a tie between bale and paterson.

My_Cousin_Mose

Can this thumbnail just not? Stop looking at me like that!

James Falato

If You think this 1989 "Batman" was at times "Rather Campy" You must take into consideration the fact that the prior incantation of "The Cape Crusader" was the 1960's "Batman" TV Series where They were SO CAMPY They would put-up "POW!" and "WHAM!" "BUBBLES during Fights between Batman/Robin and the Villains' Henchmen... BECAUSE THE BUBBLES WERE USED IN EARLY COMIC BOOKS FOR EEFECTS... And many Fans felt good about seeing at least some "Camp"...

Rhinehold

My favorite Batman is Keaton. My favorite Joker is Mark Hamill (with a close followup being Cameron Monaghan but technically not Joker or may he is ?)

droodly

OH GOD!!! Scrolled down from todays poll and nearly shit myself. Joker Simone will haunt my dreams. WTF George...

Grand Moff Slackin'

Logan Nelson

This comment gave me super Stranger Things vibes... You wouldn't happen to be making a "trash can lid shield" would you.

You all should watch Birdman starring Michael Keaton. Heavily inspired by his legacy as Batman and it’s a meta commentary on stardom. Won best picture in 2015

Blackavar

I highly recommend Birdman as well. Such a great film, and the way it’s shot is, frankly, quite cool.

Aaron Gunstone

Even today, there are plenty of reclusive billionaires. We've all heard of Bezos, Musk, Gates etc - but there are several *thousand* billionaires. Most of whom are far from household names.

Lucifer Moon

PLEASE PLEASE WATCH ALL THE BATMANS INCLUDING 'BATMAN FOREVER' AND 'BATMAN AND ROBIN' PLEASE PLEASE. I NEED TO SEE YOUR REACTIONS TO THEM. Also PLEASE react to the MAX (HBOMAX) 'Harley Quinn show' IT IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST BATMAN RELATED SHOWS / MOVIES PUT OUT IN A LONG LONG TIME.
