Great reaction! <3

djKENTO

And there go my plans for sleep

MotoDork

Time to pull out the laserdisc.

Marko T.

Yes! I have been waiting for this. Batman Returns is a better movie so I recommend it too.

JediLounger

Oh snap. Sure I got time for this today. If you guys do all of them that would finally, amazingly get me around my refusal to watch Batman and Robin. I’ve seen all the memes and bits and pieces but never actually sat through the entire movie.

Odd Thomas

It has its moments - mostly Nicholson - but Batman Returns is ten times better. I also love Batman Forever so I hope you watch that too.

MatthewBrown74m

OMG HELL YEAH I was wondering if you two seen this

Den Radar Ryan

It was this movie and 'Beetlejuice' that made me become a musician in 1989 and join the school concert band on tuba. Danny Elfman has been my biggest musical hero ever since. Lol I also got this movie on VHS, a Batman sweater and a home-made Batman cake for my 11th Birthday in November 1989. I still have the VHS tape so I will use that to watch along for nostalgia sake. 🙃🦇📼📺

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

I come from a family who on both sides are somewhat plainly honest about whether they like gifts or not so the ambiguity was almost never a problem. It was both hilarious and demoralising at the same time haha. Eventually we also just ended up in the gift card or money camp and it’s worked well for over a decade now so George gets my vote on that one lol. Also same as Simone, have always felt odd getting either unsuitable or extravagant gifts from folks over the years as well - especially if I know their financial situations are up in the air or they get stressed out by the season.

Odd Thomas

"Are we going to see his parents die again?" You have to remember prior to this movie, Batman, at least on screen, was remembered as the campy 60s TV show with Adam West. It was an awesome show, but it was not dark or brooding at all like the original comics.

Foodassassin4life

Harley Quinn was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series as a henchwoman for the Joker, and debuted in its 22nd episode, "Joker's Favor", on September 11, 1992

HUGO TORRES

U saying u cant picture nicholson as joker not knowing hes widely considered one of the best cracked me up

Johnny Liu

As someone who does both the Chinese and Western holidays, the red envelopes were fun when I was younger, but the surprise of a gift is what turned me around to giving gifts over money. Money is too impersonal, a lot of the joy definitely comes from the process of finding something special for someone else and then giving it to them.

Elvenwitch

Simone, that amazing opening made my day. The Batman/Ducktales mashup was hilarious!

Pam Nail

Bruce Wayne's parents getting killed wasn't nearly such an overdone thing at this point. I don't think the 1940s movies address it at all, and the TV show and movie with Adam West in the 60s only briefly mentioned it (and certainly didn't show it). I don't think the opening was meant to be a joke at the time, except maybe a reference for comics fans. I don't think anyone not already familiar with the comics would have been expected to see that scene and think of the Waynes.

Korpse

This was the first movie I seen in a theater and I've been hooked on movies ever since. My grandparents took me as a young child and they said I never moved or made a sound, I was completely fixed on what I was seeing for the first time 🙌💚

PIG

I would love it if they ever reacted to Batman: The Animated Series.

JediLounger

As another commenter mentioned, prior to this movie the public’s main awareness of Batman was the Adam West TV show. What changed from the 60’s to this movie was a 1986 comic series by Frank Miller called The Dark Knight Returns. The story in that comic has nothing to do with ‘89 Batman, but the comic was a source of inspiration for Tim Burton in tone and aesthetics for Batman and Batman Returns. Speaking of that story, The Dark Knight Returns is one of the few modern DC animated movies that was adapted properly into a Part 1 & 2 (2013), allowing the story room to breathe. Some animated Batman on the channel would be fun. That adaptation along with Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) are both excellent and worthy of your time.

Brent

You guys HAVE to watch Batman: Mask of the Phantasm!!! :D

Dioskur

I didnt watch this for ages! at least 20 years. Ok, lets do this!

DeAndrew Greene

Ironically these Batman movies were seen as too dark. That's how we got Batman and Robin. The mandate was to make it more kid friendly so they threw in all the camp and one liners. Yes WB has been fucking up the DC universe for a very long time.

Paul G

Prior to this movie Batman had been featured in a few 1940s films and the 1960s Adam West TV show and subsequent film. The 1940s films are not well known outside of hardcore fans and they tended to play up Batman's investigative skills more than any other traits - something that was brought back in Pattinson's version. The 1960s Adam West version is VERY campy, 1000X campier than this film. In that light this film is much darker and really started the whole trend of comic book movies can also be for adults - Batman 1989 is what paved the way for not only all the subsequent Batman franchises (obviously) but also the MCU. You also have to keep in mind that prior to this movie the only other comic book superhero franchise to have any real success was the Christopher Reeves Superman run and those films were much more family friendly. So to answer your questions, yes this film is very campy and comic bookesque in comparison to the Nolan films but it was also hugely more "adult" and dark than any other Batman or superhero film that came before it.

Odd Thomas

As George says, Batman & Robin is awful but it also has Alicia Silverstone and Uma Thurman so...

REDR58

Yes! About time! I also recommend you watch “Batman Returns” afterwards. I don’t think I can describe how widespread the promotions for this movie was. The buildup prior to release and afterwards at the time. The ad campaigns for this thing were everywhere, and you have to remember there wasn’t the same kind of all-encompassing promotional media presence as we have today. It was like a Star Wars level event I think (when Star Wars was good). “Batman” was everywhere, the prince music videos were all over MTV. It was just a huge event. https://youtu.be/tIj63Bgbj_I?si=zfofnSd5rKqnwNg0

REDR58

Yeah but she is really bad in it unfortunately. I still say skip it.

Travis

I had a lot of feedback but my mind was wiped when Simone said PEWPEWPEWPEW 🤣

Young Blood Priest

So true. The bat symbol was everywhere including Time Square. People had taken to cutting the bat symbol in their hair. This movie took over everything.

Tenwyn

Wow, never realized how much inspiration Nolan took from this movie for The Dark Knight.

MotoDork

Harley Quinn had not yet been conceived as a character when this film was released in 1989.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Saw this in the theater as a kid and it was a gigantic cultural phenomenon (you would see that Batman logo on hats and T-shirts for years after). For context, yeah Batman at the time was known to most people from the uber campy 60s TV show, and Michael Keaton was known as Mr. Mom and for other comedy roles like in Gung Ho (good movie btw). The Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner Superman was the only successful super hero movie franchise that had ever done well at the time, years earlier. That's of course apart from the TV shows, including Linda Carter's Wonder Woman. Marvel wouldn't see any real success until Sam Raimi's Spiderman. It is a little funny in retrospect, especially the Prince soundtrack (btw, fun fact, Prince said the first song he ever learned to play on the piano was the theme to the Batman TV show), and I love that joke in Shaun of the Dead when they're throwing vinyl LPs at the zed words, and Shaun gets upset about the New Order and Sade albums but the Batman soundtrack, "Throw it." 😂

Tay Schumaker

Okay the Batman story from SImone was great

REDR58

I remember Prince’s music for this movie was always on the radio and seemed like in constant rotation on MTV.

Opti_Frog

Weirdly, i have seen Batman Returns several times, but never this film. Edit: Oh! lol

Lamar Savage

I'm sure I won't be the only one to say this, but trust me, Clooney is very aware of how bad his Batman movie was. He's very honest about it and that's to his credit.

Lyle Morgan

Hard to overstate how big this movie was that summer. Seemingly everyone in America was wearing Batman t-shirts. Also, as campy as it seems now, this was the first on screen adaptation to address Joker being a homicidal maniac. Watching him talk to and dance around corpses and mutilate women's faces was just not something you'd expect to see in a "comic book movie" back then. The shadow of the corny 60's TV show still loomed large.

sarCC

What a nice surprise! I hope you watch SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II after this.

Vwlss Nvwls

I saw this so many times in the theater when it came out. I also own a collector copy of the Prince soundtrack and a normal copy of the Danny Elfman soundtrack. This was just so amazing for the time, and it still good today imo. The sequels were okay, I liked Michelle Pfiefer as Catwoman, but overall I am just not crazy about the sequels.

Tony E Crumpton

Because of the backend deal and merchandising profits in his contract where he got a large percentage of the box-office, Nicholson made 90+ million on this movie, so I think, even if he wasn't having fun making the movie, he ended up LOVING it.

Odd Thomas

You forgot about Jared Leto's Joker... which is the correct response, lol

Jon Johns

George / Simone, on your own time watch a few minutes of the 1960's Batman TV show. That is what most folks knew Batman as, so this version, as over-the-top goofiness, was as dark as ever, comparitively. Many older folks miss the "fun" and "light" versions of things in the olde days, compared to the darker, more brooding versions of films today...

Michael Green

Batman killed in his original iteration: he's firmly in the tradition of pulp heroes like The Shadow and the Phantom, who ganked baddies left and right. Still, from what I can tell the "no kill" rule came about in the early forties, only a few years after his introduction, so it's been a thing much longer than not.

JokerDanny

please react to the Gotham tv show

ben yosi

the joker in ''gotham'' tv show is great

Vwlss Nvwls

There is no easy answer to gifts. It all depends on the parties involved. The best you can do is be as kind about it as possible. The red pockets with money is perfectly fine, but giving an actual gift shows that you were thinking of them in the selection of the gift. Hence the phrase "it's the thought that counts." But with gift giving and many other social situation, you should always just be yourself. If people cannot accept you as is, then you will not enjoy each others company anyhow, so why fake it.

Khan1001

George & Simone, You guys are great! is Superman 78 next? looking forward to X2 & you should watch Batman Returns 1992, which is 100% a Tim Burton movie with all its weirdness, loved it though.

Young Blood Priest

Superman 1978 would be a good one to watch after this to see the contrast of the characters. You guys will love it.

Young Blood Priest

Also this Joker is much closer to the original Joker from the early comics. A Joker the brought back to the comics in the 70s by the late Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil. Also, Tim Burton said he didn’t find the character of Batman interesting which explains why he shows more interest in the Joker.

Dioskur

George please remember that comic movies were a JOKE in the 80s. Trash. Noone took them serious in any way. So trying to do any movie about any comic was a huge gamble and everyone thought youd make a fool of yourself if you tried to make it good. Noone dared to seem like he was taking it serious.

zak

Interesting fact, Batman actually has the least screen time of the 3 leads (in a film called Batman) - Jack Nicholson - 39:40 (31.44%) - Kim Basinger - 36:26 (28.88%) - Michael Keaton - 34:50 (27.61%)

AstralCars

Please react to Edward Scissorhands (1990). It’s the best movie Tim Burton ever made about a guy who has scissors for hands ✂️🤲 Also Danny Elfman’s score is so good in that movie, it should be hung up in the Louvre.

Mastervodo

Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew! Simone! That may be the funniest thing I've seen you ad-lib in a reaction! I thought the "romance" with Vicky Vale and Wayne in this one was so quick and forced and just unbelievable. I really didn't feel any chemistry between these two. Bale for Batman. Ledger for Joker, easy.... not even close!

JokerDanny

This movie is basically just a Joker movie, it's a bad Batman movie in my opinion, because Batman does not kill, he's trained in every martial art and he's the worlds greatest detective, this movie showcases none of that. The movie is a good movie but a bad Batman movie. Also Vicki Vale is a journalist in the comics, Batman has never killed Joker in the comics. Two-Face was supposed to be an eventual villain in the Tim Burton Batman films but it never happened.

p0sthum4n

"Good movie but bad Batman movie" is basically how I feel about the Dark Knight trilogy besides Batman Begins, especially with how lackluster Gotham is in those flicks after BB. To be perfectly honest, The Batman is the only Batman movie I really feel captures the feeling of the mainline comics Batman. It's an excellent Year Two style adaptation.

JokerDanny

Yes Harley Quinn/ Dr. Harleen Quinzel was originally created for the Batman Animimated Series

JokerDanny

Gotham becomes too clean after Batman Begins, it could be explained that Bruce Wayne was away training so didn't devote any of his time into helping Gotham rejuvenate but it still doesn't have the Gothic look that Gotham is supposed to have in the Dark Knight/Rises. The Batman balances everything really well from the look of the city, Batman's combat skills, his grief, his detective skills.

REDR58

The reason that the Batman portrayal by Michael Keaton seems comparatively stiff is that the costume was literally confining. You’ll notice that he never turns his head because he cannot turn his head.

Vwlss Nvwls

Vicki Vale is like Spider-mans Peter Parker?!? So Bruce Wayne is also Vicki Vale as well as Batman?!?! I am so confused.

Vwlss Nvwls

I like all the portrayals of Batman, but Michael Keaton is always Bruce Wayne for me. As for the Joker... I do not compare them. Each one feels like it's own persona, and does not deserve to be brought to the level of either of the other two. I think they all did an amazing job. I do not include Jared Leto in that list, because we just not mention it and bury it in the same grave as the Atari E.T. games.

Anodyne

Giving presents rather than money in European tradition is linked to feudalism and Christianity. Aristocratic wealth was always felt to be rooted in ownership of land and chattels - cash money was looked down on as the concern of the (much lower) trading/shop-keeping class. Add to that Christianity's warnings about money (Money is the root of all evil - it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven - Christ chasing the money-lenders out of the temple) and you get a long tradition that giving cash is vulgar and shows you don't care enough about the person to give a proper gift. That's why gift cards were invented - so you could give sort-of money without actually giving money. And if you're girlfriend's family is Italian background they're probably of Catholic heritage, and the Catholic church holds the old ambiguous views about money much more strongly than many Protestant denominations who beileve more in individualism, hard work, and the earthly rewards thereof. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Protestant_Ethic_and_the_Spirit_of_Capitalism

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

The idea of lil’ Simone just casually watching Michelle Pfeiffer in skin tight leather and a near feral Danny DeVito performance sounds delightfully odd.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤Both of what you said about gifts. George on getting clothing and the baggage/obligation that comes with that, and Simone just being a "bad gift getter" and what to do with her face... and both of you on the RBF... This whole intro hit home for me. And as far as the RBF, I can't tell you how many times I've been to the store, gone to the checkout line and been asked by the cashier (usually women who do this) "What's wrong sweetie?" or "Honey you need to smile more" and I have to put on that happy face mask and be like "hahaha no no, I was just lost in my thoughts" or whatever, but that's just my face... what do you want from me LOL? And getting gifts and the "what do I do with my face" has been the main reason getting gifts is a whole thing for me, as much as I appreciate getting them.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I have a soft spot for the gaudy mess, but now I usually watch it with either RedLetterMedia’s commentary or taking a shot for each of Mr. Freeze’s ice puns or any codpiece shot.

K Murray

My man really saw a birthday present with the writing in crayon and thought it was from Batman

p0sthum4n

The map of Gotham that Vicki Vale and Knox were looking at is Vancouver turned on its side.

Shelley Lloyd

So, Batman has never killed the Joker. Dick Grayson (the first Robin/Nightwing), has, however.

Shelley Lloyd

My favorite Joker, btw, is Mark Hamill. Any other answer is just wrong.

JayF

My favorite Joker is Mark Hamill (voiced him in the cartoons). The only Batman movie you haven't reacted to that you absolutely must get to at some point is the animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

Marko T.

Please watch Batman & Robin together even though George has already seen it. That would be fun reaction. Its actually the last part of this 4 movie series so watch Batman Returns and Batman Forever first.

djKENTO

I’m sure some one has said it but Harley didn’t exist until the animated series which exists thanks to this movies success.

Marko T.

I recommend watching the Batdance and Partyman music videos by Prince. He made a full album called Batman for this.

Chase Schleich

I haven't watched this movie in years, but now, watching it as an adult and paying attention, it's crazy the amount of miniatures and dolls used throughout the film and the terrible hand drawn moments like the first time we see Batman on the roof top and Joker falling from the tower (he literally turns into a colorful 2D smear). A bunch of the Batplane scenes (especially the crash) and a lot of the hanging on the edge of the tower scenes were just dolls and miniatures. It was very obvious and stood out because Burton kept the camera on those shots for way too long every time, giving away the illusion.

Chase Schleich

He did the detective work to figure out the beauty product mixtures. The suit just killed any chance of the fight scenes being great. That suit has always been my biggest complaint about this film (other than the bad effects which I went over in a previous post). The rubber everything, the inability to move, the bad fitting cowl. They really half assed it. If your main character can't move, then you need to go back to the drawing board and redesign the suit. Nolan's films finally got the suit to function, but I hated the way those suits looked. Mostly the way the cowl squeezes his face and the fabric that the cape was made out of, especially in Begins. I don't think they got the suit right until Affleck's Batman. Pattison's suit is great as well. It's just crazy that they kept using these rubber suits for so long.

Chase Schleich

Alright, we need to do the Val Kilmer and George Clooney Batman films just for Simone's reaction. Make them a special bonus upload so people don't get pissed about using up spots on those films, but I really think they're worth doing just because they're so bad it's funny and we'd all like to see Simone's reaction to her first time watching them.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤Funny thing about the batsuit and how Keaton couldn't turn his head. He reprised his role as Batman in the Flash movie that just came out. They kept the suit for the most part the same but they made it less restrictive which allowed him to turn his head. But Keaton learned to love what was eventually referred to as "The Batman lean" due to the way he has to move his whole upper body to look left/right/up. So when he tried on the less restrictive suit for testing, he didn't like it. The way he moved in the restrictive suit was signature to his Batman so they made him another suit more restrictive and tight like from his Tim Burton days. Christian Bale made a joke in TDK about how, when getting a new suit, he wants to be able to turn his head because I believe his batsuit also had the "can't turn head" problem in Batman Begins, and the very beginning of TDK.

FranciscoGios

The only reason we got Vicky Vale on the first 1990s Batman movie was because Tim Burton wanted to make part two and had plans to include Catwoman on that one. My favorite Batman is Micheal Keaton my favorite Bruce Wayne is Christian Bale. My favorite Joker is Heath Ledger; that’s an easy one.

BlakeK80DrumCovers

Vicki Vale is a long standing character pre dating Talia Al Ghoul and Rachael Dawes (who was created by Nolan for his trilogy) as Bruce Waynes OG love interest. Essentialy, she's the Lois Lane/Mary Jane Watson of the Batman comics.

Joshua White

Do yourselves a favor. Just take 30 minutes out of your life and practice looking into an empty box, smiling your most genuine smile, and then looking up and saying "That's really sweet, thank you so much. I really appreciate it." It could be a pinecone. A creased Jack of diamonds. A stained beanie baby. Whatever. Just look down, smile, look up, and deliver the lines. Build the muscle memory. It gets easier throughout your thirties. By forty, you'll be making people weep with your show of appreciation.

djKENTO

When it comes to people not knowing as much as Bruce Wayne it just makes sense for the time. The Wayne Murders probably happened around 1960. News stories died and were forgotten. News paper microfilm was the only way to go back and look at old news stories…

djKENTO

Nicholson is 53 years old in this film. He was born in the 1930s. So if the murder took place around 1960 he’d have been in his 20s.

djKENTO

As for the attitude for this film… It was actually a big deal that it was rated PG-13 and scary. Parents were really mad at how dark this was. And Batman Returns is even darker. It’s the reason why Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are so campy. Kids were CRYING in theaters when I saw Batman Returns and sponsors like McDonalds were getting backlash. You’ll see why when you watch Batman Returns. It’s a BDSM gothic nightmare hellscape in the best way. This is really the first serious comic book movie since Superman II in 1980. And it’s the first one to even try to take it seriously. You have to remember until The Dark Knight Returns in 1986 Batman was always pretty cartoony. He wore Grey and BRIGHT BLUE. It was the 1960s Adam West Batman and then The Super Friends which was so safe. Batman hung out with the Scooby Doo gang before this. From 1989 until X-Men in 2000 Batman was kind of the only well known super hero getting movies. Judge Dredd, The Crow, Spawn, the ninja turtles and Blade being the only others of note and most of them are real bad. So as corny as these might be… they are literally THE BEST of their time… even Batman & Robin is head and shoulders above the dog shit like SHAQ’s STEEL, a Superman spin-off movie where there is no Superman. Or The Phantom where Billy Zane wears a purple suit designed by the Jim Henson company… or The Shadow, where Alec Baldwin wears a fake nose and plays a reformed opium dealer. Speaking of Alec Baldwin. He started dating Kim Basinger rumor has it he’s the reason she didn’t do Batman Returns… because Alec wanted to play Batman in 1989 and just barely lost out. So as a sign of solidarity with her new beau she bowed out. But honestly I think Tim Burton just wanted CatWoman as the love interest.

Mark

Somebody probably already said this. The guy who plays Bob was actually cast by Nicholson, and was one of his friends.

Skyruff

Americans have issues... with several things we consider "our way" of doing things and getting us to change is ridiculously hard. We dislike coins above 25 cents. Why? No particular reason, we just don't like coins we prefer paper money. Our gift giving issues are in this same vein. Even we make fun of ourselves but we do not change. Every culture has these same issues with how they do things. Good Luck with your acceptance of the many oddities out there.

Kevin Bartelen

I do in fact know someone who complains about receiving money as a gift because it's just so impersonal. I'm pretty sure they would have preferred clothes they don't actually like because then at least the giver put thought into it. As far as Harley Quinn, she didn't exist, even in the comics, when this movie was made. They created her for the animated show and the character just took off from there.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

would love to see some reactions to dc animated universe ..especially batman under the red hood ...also unrelated.. .but maybe start the long plunge into supernatural.. its only 15 seasons of epic-ness.. no big deal lol

Drew Acheson

You guys should check out Dick Tracy. It's a pretty fun movie based on a really old detective comic book.

Lola Lirola

Those are camp classics that deserve recognition! C'mon, there's the very scandalous batnippled suits, and more shots of latex-clad ass than any Pride Parade. There's Batgirl looking like the actress just wandered into the set on her lunch break and has no clue what the hell is happening around her. There's George Clooney, visibly hating his life at a level that only Pattinson in Twilight could ever top! Plus an amount of ice puns that could break the most dedicated dad... So utterly stupid, they go all the way around to kinda good.

Bennett Holleman

Can't wait for Mars Attacks, my fav Tim Burton. Also want to hear Simone sing It's Been a While in its entirety.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned that Michael Keaton’s tenure as Batman would partially serve as the basis for the excellent film “Birdman”, directed by Alejandro Iñárritu. I don’t want to give too much away if it gets considered at some point but there’s quite a bit involving art imitating life.

Khan1001

Great reaction, was really interesting to hear your take watching this for first time, most of us grew up with Michael Keaton's batman, you guys are doing it in reverse! some facts about this movie, there was a huge backlash from fans and concern from the studio when Keaton was cast, he was just an average guy and Batman's supposed to be a 6'2, musclebound dude in the comics, but when Keaton puts on the suit he becomes the batman and its literally a suit of Armor so he can take a lot of punishment as we saw, obviously Bale took it to another level with his physic same with as Cavil for superman, those two look like they just walked straight out of the comic book, but there's something about Keaton and his eyes in the bat suit, he does look menacing and dangerous, also the suit was a nightmare to wear for Keaton, he could barley move, see or hear anything, Tim Burton actually put on the suit so he could understand what Keaton had to go through for hours and hours. the suit is a lot less bulky in the the second film and looks more streamlined, anyway look forward to when you guys do Returns, I remember I had a huge poster Michelle Phifers catwoman on my wall back in the day, holy cow she was something in that cat/bondage suit! Favourite Batman - Bale, only just Favourite Bruce Wayne - Keaton Favourite Joker - that's really tough but I'd have to go with Ledger but Nicholson and Phoenix are also great.

Who Are These People

Any holiday that obligates you to give gifts is a subversion of the entire point of gift-giving. Give a gift when it is right and don't obligate yourself or others to observe a schedule of gifting.

Dakota

I grew up on this and Batman The Animated Series, and can comfortably say that Kevin Conroy is the best Batman and Bruce Wayne. And Mark Hamill is still the best Joker.

Skyruff

I have seen (possibly) all actors who have played Batman including the 1940's serials. In my humble opinion, Best : Joker, Batman and Bruce Wayne is the 1990's animated series. The series featured Kevin Conroy (batman), Mark Hamill (Joker), and the first appearance of Harley Quinn amongst many other great features.

Who Are These People

Also, this movie's theme music gives me chills. My buddies and I did a rogue 'Batman' parody in in NYC in 1995, running around Central Park in our homemade costumes and having a blast, and used this music in our movie. I heard it play over and over as I painfully edited that VHS-camcorder project on two VCRs. Big feels.

Amaras

Yes Vicky is a long running character from the comics, not so much nowadays, but yesh. I don’t know if someone said it already or not, but to answer one of George questions, Harley was created for the Cartoon TV Show from the 90s. People loved her so much that she transferred to the “ canon “ of the comics. And as you said, yeah, she was Jokers Psychiatrist and was “ turned “ by him. Not lying, the last time I watched this movie was 20 years ago and watching along with you guys was a blast. Thanks for the trip back to memory lane.

Who Are These People

This Batman, this Joker are a very '50's version. That's the Tim Burton influence, kind of Tarantino-ing Batman by stepping up some aspects of the production while styling it all in a classic way. This was, of course, the first Batman I saw (I was 18), but I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but I do like the respect to the aesthetic, from costumes to set design and even to characterization. This wasn't the contemporary Batman; 'The Killing Joke' had come out in comics just a year before this movie and 'Arkham Asylum' in the same year.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

People always give me hell for this but Val Kilmer is my favorite Bruce Wayne while Pattinson is my favorite Batman. Batman Forever was my first Batman movie so Kilmer is very close to my heart.

Jesse Coombs

I would absolutely love if they would react to the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, at least parts one and two.

Jacob King

Same actually. If Robin wasn’t miscast it would be considered a classic. Great villains, the best love interest (until Zoe Kravitz) and Val is giving a good performance.

Jesse Coombs

Best Batman: Adam West. Best Bruce Wayne: Michael Keaton. Best Joker: Heath Ledger. Best Gordon: Gary Oldman.

Jesse Coombs

Although any take is the correct one. It's really fun that there are so many different takes on the character.

Who Are These People

Jack Nicholson's Joker was exactly the 50's-60's period Joker portrayal that fit Burton's chosen aesthetic and is most consistent with most comic characterizations. So to address Simone's question about Jack "resisting" the role, I don't see that happening. The Joker he was meant to portray plays like an old-fashioned circus clown, hopping around, making funny faces, then whacking another clown on the head with a mallet. Hamill's Joker was similar, if less morbid for the TV-PG rating. Heath's acting was very intense but honestly his Joker wasn't characteristically Joker. The same behaviors could've been written for a sinister, devious gangster in any given movie. How different, really, was Ledger's Joker to, say, McDowell's character in Clockwork Orange? Joaquin's Joker was an interesting experiment in trying to give realistic grounding to the character of Joker, but doesn't resemble any comic book Joker that I am aware of. And there are no other Jokers, so that's it.

E. D.

I´m just ten mins in but I love these surprise reactions; I didn´t expect you to upload Batman AT ALL and it wasn´t on a poll, in the last months at least (or I don´t remember it), and I love your little stories and opinions about what ever you experienced or thought about recently.

I'm truly very sorry if this is something that has been asked about before, but the only Batman I currently have access to in Australia is on the streaming service Binge, which is owned by Foxtel. It's 2hrs and 1 minute, not 2hrs and 5 minutes. It's not a different cut. I get them in prefect sync and mine starts creeping ahead. I guess its some sort of different encoding issue? Don't particularly care about this movie but why is this even a thing that happens?

BangDroid

George, just suck it up and play the game. Wear the sweater (or whatever it is), purely when you visit the gifter. But really you should have this talk with ur GF and agree on the best outcome, because it depends on the people.

Marko T.

Its probably the European/Australian PAL version. PAL region coded movies on vhs and dvd were a little bit faster than the NTSC versions in North America. That is no longer a problem with Blu-Rays but some streaming services (not all) and tv channels might still do that.

Marko T.

I'm suprised George didn't notice the same Alfred actor from Batman & Robin.

BangDroid

I get the same thing with virtually everything I watch here, with a few exceptions, this being one. But yeah usually I have to drop the speed in VLC to 0.96. I'm guessing you're right, it's an encoding issue. Could be related to how TV networks speed up shows, particularly reruns because there are more ads and they have to make up for it.

Alexander Brown

Has happened to me with pretty much anything that is on Foxtel or provided by Foxtel. Chernobyl was the same. I set the YouTube video of the reaction to 1.05 speed. The reaction will then run just a little faster than the movie rather than the other way around, but it will be a little slower to happen so you won’t have to resync as often, just hit pause and play on the reaction every so often when you notice it happening.

TGrimace

"Turns out, neither of us have seen this movie" With as much as you talked over the dialogue in this one, I'm going to go out on a limb and say neither of you have seen the movie still.

Elder Lyons

why are you even here? did you not know reactions are commentaries during a movie before you paid? im not sure you know this, but theres this website called Netflix, it turns out you can watch movies on there that has zero people commentating. no one except the movie would be talking. maybe thats more suitable for you?

TGrimace

Just poking fun at how much they talked over dialogue during this particular reaction video. Relax.

I would suggest George and Simone watch the animated movie "batman Mask of the phantasm" to get a even better understanding of batman. Comparing all the jokers can be daunting....Mark Hamill's portrayal as joker will solidify how Joker really is.

Nate Terry

Watch Batman: Mask of the phantasm! That will help you both understand true batman/Joker. the 90's animated actors for the phantasm movie/series were also cast in the Arkham videogames George mentioned playing.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

And to my knowledge, no other actor has gotten Batman to sing, he’s got my vote for that alone. For those who’d like to check it out, look up Batman performing a wonderful rendition of “Am I Blue”, inspired.

Jacob King

Batman canon is famously fluid. Joker killing Batman’s parents was an invention of this movie but over the years the killer has changed a number of times. Just putting this out there, the Harley Quinn movie is good

dieselbeast

I say have Simone react to "Batman Forever" Val Kilmer and "Batman and Robin" George Clooney if she hasn't already in her own time, no they are not the best Batman movies but they're still a lot of fun to have with them, All Star Cast, don't take it too seriously and enjoy the ride 😁 but they're definitely not boring George! lol

Vincent Arfeux

It's my favorite Batman, probably because of nostalgia. But it's fun and dark just like it should be.

Gary Fixler

My first thought re: the Italian family: "Was it loud?" George: "It was loud." Lol. My stepdad had a big Italian family. Every family gathering was like a sporting event, with everyone shouting over each other. Fun times.

Lucifer Moon

PLEASE PLEASE REACT TO BATMAN FOREVER AND BATMAN AND ROBIN FOR US ALL TO SEE.

Wes

Best Joker: Mark Hamill, Best Bruce Wayne: Christian Bale but honorable mention to Ben Affleck, Best Batman: Robert Pattenson

Lucifer Moon

Great reactions, Simone and George! Yeah, “Batman and Robin” has been the weakest portrayal of Batman. But I’ve got a different take on it. I don’t consider it George Clooney’s fault. I think we can lay the blame squarely on the late Joel Schumacher and his production team. They were the ones who came up with the nipples and codpieces. Not to mention the Batmobile running up the side of a building and then cutting to another scene without any explanation of how it got back down in one piece. And I’m sorry, I just have a problem with Poison Ivy, whose identity is structured around plant life, teaming up with Mr. Freeze, a villain who uses, well, cold. Seems to me they shouldn’t get along. The same with “Batman Forever”. I didn’t particularly care for Jim Carrey’s portrayal of The Riddler, or Tommy Lee Jones’ Two Face. I just think Joel Schumacher was out of his element in those two movies. “Batman Returns” is a strong portrayal of the Batman characters. My only issue is it started the trend of multiple villains in the movie. Growing up in the 60s, I was more in tune with the comic book portrayals of the characters. So, I had a real problem with Nolan’s and Bale’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne as a party boy. He was a mature, upright citizen of Gotham. I mean, what kind of screwed up Child Protective Services would place orphaned Dick Grayson (Robin) in the home of the Nolan trilogy’s Bruce Wayne? Nolan and Bale looked like they took a page from Green Arrow’s alter ego, Oliver Queen, a definite rich party boy. For me, my favorite Bruce Wayne is either Keaton or Clooney. Clooney LOOKS like the comic's Bruce Wayne. Favorite Batman – again, I’d have to go with Keaton. Tagged as “The World’s Greatest Detective”, Keaton’s Batman was more cerebral. For physicality, then go with Bale or Affleck. Favorite Catwoman – Michelle Pfeiffer. Because, well, Michelle Pfeiffer. Favorite Alfred - Jeremy Irons in the Snyderverse. His snark and giving Bruce / Batman shit wins it for me.

Daniel Simmons

Favorite Batman: Pattinson. Favorite Bruce Wayne: Keaton Favorite overall: Adam West. Favorite Joker: Really difficult, slightly go with Ledger. But Nicholson and Phoenix are both great. Leto was absolutely terrible though.

Scott Gibbs

When Simone said Jack Nicholson was menacing in everything she's seen I realized you guys should watch As Good as it Gets. A different side of Jack.

Astraeos

George please tell me how you met an Italian girl in Canada. I need this knowledge

Justtired

I’m late to the party and haven’t seen all the comments, so forgive me if I’m echoing someone else. Jack’s portrayal of Joker is more of a throwback to Caesar Romero’s Joker in the original Batman tv series with Adam West.

David Lonewolf Wright

I didn't hear a qualifier, so I have to go with Kevin Conroy as my favorite Batman. My favorite Joker is Heath Ledger with Mark Hamill almost neck and neck. I do have to go with Michael Keaton for best Bruce Wayne so far. I was 11 when this came out in theaters, so my point of reference really was the more campy versions and did notice the hint of Caser Romero's Joker from the 60's series. There was a trading card set for the movie, which I still have... you know, speaking of hoarders and such.
