yeahhhh gurl

I still prefer PTA's earlier stuff: Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love, but I did like Liqorice Pizza; that had more heart, like his early stuff did before he just made Oscar bait.

JediLounger

Apparently we’re all going to be drinking milkshakes this morning. I saw this in theaters as a double feature with The Mist. That was a wild 5 hours and change lol. Edit: Power blips are annoying. I live in an area where they can be quite common. Given what you guys do for a living I am sure you have taken precautions, but if you don't have battery backup surge protectors on your gear they would be worth investing in. It would really suck to lose a reaction cause of a power blip or outage. Second Edit: Also this is based on a book by Upton Sinclair, a well known author and journalist in his time. If you want to scare yourself half to death then you should check out The Jungle, his book about the meat packing industry in the early 20th century.

Deco

In the name of the father is a great Daniel day-lewis movie for a future watch

Nemo

Wow! What an awesome surprise. One of my all time favourites! Happy to see this in my notifications. :D

djKENTO

Oh I hope they loved this. I’ve been sick all weekend and this is definitely what I need right now.

Funny That

Nixon was also a bowler.

Rash Bandicoot

Great start to my Sunday! Thank you!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

So that’s who drank the milkshake?… Anyway, prepare for a lot of comments and discussion here and for very good reason. PTA is a genius at subtlety and storytelling, not to mention knowing how to structure a shot. One of my favourite movies and favourite performances but oddly something I can only watch once a year or so because it’s what I call D&I: dense and intense. Happy you both get to see this one :)

djKENTO

Also hey George! Big fan who also has back problems. I know everyone who has back problems has a remedy for back problems that they recommend to everyone else who has back problems. Did I say Back Problems enough? BACK PROBLEMS Anyway. My go to recommended solution for years has been THE CHIRP WHEEL. It’s like a foam roller but better. In fact it would bully the foam roller, take its lunch money and stuff it in its locker. It’s that much better. I have a compression fracture in my lower back, I get pinched nerves, sciatica, muscle spasms… the whole 9. Chirp Wheel is an immediately fix for me. Also the sound your back makes on the small wheel when you really need to get a knot out or apply deep pressure. WOOOOOO it’s a cruncher. Anyway I hope this helps. Stay strong! Rooting for you.

My weekly plug for Sunshine (2007)

MacGuffinStuff

Irish names do have interesting spellings but Ciaran Hinds is pronounced like Keeran. Also one of these days I hope you see him in the earliest thing I've ever seen him in, didn't even recognize him at first, along with young Helen Mirren and Liam Nelson, in Excalibur. And two other Daniel Day Lewis movies you gotta see are Gangs Of New York and Last Of The Mohicans. Paul Thomas Anderson of course you gotta see Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman together in The Master, they're both absolutely amazing in that.

Nicholas Vreugdenhil

I've never clicked so fast! One of my favorites, but reactors never do it! Awesome to see it!

Odd Thomas

Actually getting to know your children is still a fairly recent thing in history, particularly in the west. Children were literally to be seen and not heard, to work for their keep and move out at 18.

PIG

Yes!!!!! I can’t wait to press play!! This might be my favorite movie and these are one of my favorite reactors. Good day.

PIG

Yep! They also often died compared to now. It was different back then for obvious reasons.

Astraeos

Oh boy. Oh boy! Cannot wait for this one. Great choice guys! As far as Daniel Day Lewis goes, you guys have a lot of his movies that you haven't seen. Gangs of New York, Last of the Mohicans and Lincoln are all movies that are must see, and not just because of the stellar performance of Lewis. He's also in The Bounty, with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, another great movie I'd highly recommend. Though that one has a ton of topless nudity because of the historical context of being in Tahiti in the 1700s. Might be tough for Youtube. Finally, I would highly recommend another movie that has Daniel Day Lewis, albeit in a very, very tiny role. Gandhi, with Ben Kingsley. That movie is a must see in my opinion, it is life changing to see the story and ideals and non-violent protests that Gandhi involved himself with in the British Raj. I also always forget that George has seen HBO's Rome. I knew there was a reason you guys are my favorite. That show is so, so, SO amazing. One of my absolute favorites. I forget his name, but whoever plays Mark Antony in that is also just utterly amazing.

Conner

"That sound at the beginning, is it going to be a monster movie?" Yes George, yes it is.

Tay Schumaker

There’s so much to say about this movie. The I drink your milkshake was a thing from the Teapot Dome scandal that PTA took to use for this Paul Dano was originally only going to play Paul, and PTA decided to replace the actor playing Eli with Dano a little way into shooting. It is very confusing on first watch, and I wish it had been made more plain, or he had replaced Paul’s actor. But them being twins adds something, so maybe just make it more obvious they’re twins. Simone was right that DDL was a cobbler in the mid 90s. Scorcese had to track him down and convince him to come back to the US to do Gangs of New York. The kid who plays HW, they were trying to convince his parents to let him be in the movie, so she watched Gangs to see DDL and was horrified. They had to get her a copy of The Age of Innocence to show he was actually a sweet guy. There are so many other DDL stories out there on the internet, and a few I’ve heard from people who work from him, but this is already too long

Philipp Roensch

Now this was a first watch for me as well, and heard very good things before, but boy howdy what a thrill! Great pacing, those really intense performances and a dark story to boot. Love the equation of Oil/Mud/Water/Blood, like for different characters they are the matter of the same motivation. Gaining power of the land, over other people and of course wealth is a great depiction of greed. Almost thought Daniel to be a tragic character, a terrible drunk, but of course other actions than just his asocial behavior make him so terrifying. If you want to see more Daniel Day-Lewis, his Lincoln is not that bad and Phantom Thread is amazing.

JoshG

If you want to see a great movie with Paul Dano, check out “Prisoners”. Also has incredible performances by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhal

ChickensAreRacist

Thank you two for reacting to this and giving it the respect it deserves (as you always do). I used to think this was about capitalism vs religion. As George pointed out, it’s rather instead revealing that not even the ‘prophets’ believe their BS. It’s always for profit rather.

Michael Robayo

You guys are finally watching this masterpiece!

Grand Moff Slackin'

What a ride. One of my favorites. Although I usually need long breaks between rewatching. DDL, what a treasure.

Conner

There Will Be Blood is my favorite movie of all time. It's about the philosophic birth of modern America. Daniel represents Capitalism and Eli represents Christianity, the two philosophies that make up the the foundation of the country. The two struggle for power over the soul of the town. Their motives are both sinister and they both exploit the people for their own ends. They are the same with different tools. However, Capitalism is significantly stronger than Religion. In the end, Capitalism "eats up" everything in it's path ("I have a competition in me, I want no one else to succeed"), and Christianity fights back feebly before being corrupted and then eaten up too.

Erdem

I haven't seen this movie for a while and watching with you was really fun. I hope you will react more Daniel Day-Lewis performances. In the Name of Father and Gangs of New York is my picks.

Jeff I.

Hell yes! Throwing out another suggestion for Gangs of New York. Daniel Day Lewis is amazing in it, and the overall setting and story is really cool.

W T

I mean yeah, babies crying are pretty much never really sad. It's just their innate way of communicating their needs and/or a side product of overwhelming sensations - which is all of them. They might be sick or not feel well (which is already weird to reason about because of how different baby qualia are from that of bigger kids), but it's not like they comprehend anything yet. Hence why you can get them to cut it out with the silliest nonsense, quite literally speaking.

REDR58

Another vote for “Lincoln” (2012) for Daniel Day-Lewis.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Chiming in for Paul Dano’s corner, DDL has been praised to the moon and back and rightfully so, but considering Paul Dano is holding his own opposite to him as a vile little worm like Eli is quite the accomplishment. Would recommend his performance in “The Fablemans”, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical flick from a few years ago. And to kill 2 birds with one stone, “Phantom Thread” is a gorgeous period drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and is the last role DDL took before his retirement in 2017, quite the send off to such a decorated career.

Mitchell Bowker

Two films I've been hoping you'd react to at some point, 1st film is this one! THERE WILL BE BLOOD - which I saw twice in cinemas on the same day coz two different friends wanted to see it with me, and their schedules didn't line up. But it was incredible! The 2nd film is Amadeus, but who knows when that reaction will happen... :P

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

How can I campaign for more of Simone doing 2000s rock covers? We’ve gotten Nickelback and now Maroon 5, is there anyway I can get her version the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” in my life? Fellow patrons?

Jared Winn

Time to take a few weeks and become a DDL channel for a bit. Haven’t seen them all, but Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York, and The Crucible are all amazing performances. Glad you watched it.

Logan Nelson

I've tried twice and fell asleep twice... Maybe I can get through it with yall lol

Opti_Frog

Ths is a nice surprise! Absolutely one of the best films of the last 20 years, if not of all time. Would make a great double bill with Ravenous (1999), and i'm not even kidding about that. If you like There Will Be Blood for it's themes about early America, you would find much to like in Ravenous as well.

Jesse Coombs

Extremely underrated movie! Peter Weir (the director) has such a varied and interesting filmography. It's hard to believe the same guy did Truman Show, Master and Commander, and Dead Poets Society. Pretty much all of his movies are good.

Jesse Coombs

I think Phantom Thread is my favorite PTA. It's so rich that I've only seen it once in the theater. I would definitely watch it again if they reacted to it.

Christopher Feiertag

Seeing that you seem to enjoy Daniel Day-Lewis‘ acting in „There will be blood“, how about watching „My left foot“? These 2 films show rather brilliantly, why DDL may very well be THE actor of actors.

jackthegent

If you want more Paul Dano I would recommend The Fabelmans. Spielberg's mostly autobiographical movie about his childhood. I think it's one of his best movies.

sarCC

Hey, you two SHOULD actually watch Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. It's a really great comedy with three terrific performances at its center. Easily one of the very best movies of last year(the 2nd-best live-action movie I saw last year!)

sarCC

Still makes me laugh that this won the "crime thriller" poll.

Chase Schleich

Great fucking movie. As I mentioned in another comment, It's a tie between this film and Gangs of New York. Both are brilliant. Hell, I say they watch Daniel Day Lewis's entire filmography. The dude has never made a bad film.

Shonnicus

The beginning of the film with no dialogue pays homage to 2001. Eerie music gives some nod. A better one which you need to search side by side of Daniel raising the bowling pin same shot as ape with bone/weapon killing.

JLee

Cracked up at George's "Huh" response to the Eli driving out the arthritis demon. Perfect response to that. This is not necessarily a fun movie to watch, but despite that fact, it is one of my favorites. Two of the great fallacies of America: the Church and Capitalism. One recognizing the other and struggles to work with and against the other and then capitulates to get its way and then eventually makes the other capitulate before killing it. Its that fucking self-eating snake. Also please keep referencing "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan", George. If only bc it means you're referencing Ilya Repin, one of my very favorite painters.

e4tless

I drink Your milkshake!

FranciscoGios

What you guys missed was that Daniel build the church & a road instead of the $5000, so of course Eli had his head that since he speaks the “Word of God” thought he would get the church, the road & the freakin money. So Eli wanted more so he got what he deserved.

GBmain

I'm half way through and just decided as a side note to mention that crude oil is not particularly flammable in and of itself until it's refined into some other form of fuel, the gas pocket they hit however is very flammable

Bennett Holleman

The New Austin oilfield in Red Dead Redemption is called Plainview.

Grinznmore

Another take it's all Biblical. Plagues and curses. This is a Bible story.

Jack Urmson

That eerie music was composed by Johnny Greenwood. Johnny is also a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in the band Radiohead. Steven Spielberg said of the character Daniel Plainview that “He had to shower after seeing this to try and wash him off.” Daniel Day Lewis rightfully won an Oscar for this once in a lifetime performance.

Grandalf

Daniel Day-Lewis might be the best actor ever. You guys would love THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. I know, I know, I'm already putting it in my weekly suggestions, but it's just that good. Not only is it a beautiful film in it's cinematography and score, but I think it would be good for the channel as there haven't been many reaction videos that feature it.

Bryce Lamkin

I recommend Son's of Anarchy as a show to watch please, it has 7 seasons

Aaron Crawford

Seconding the Prisoners suggestion for more Paul Dano and unreal performances from Jackman and Gyllenhaal, eerie and fascinating movie

Werevark

Hey Cinebinge, long time lurker, first time commenter! To continue the exposure to Daniel Day-Lewis: Lincoln. Its DDL, Spielberg, a top-notch cast of some of the finest character actors you can find, and its literally heart-churning, pulse pounding political action!

PIG

Good duo! Yeah we’re lucky to get both with Cinabinge

Marco

Punch Drunk Love is my favorite PTA movie. Weird, surreal and heartwarming.

Noe Ramirez

I honestly believe method acting is always dumb as hell. Lol Its the most pretentious thing in the world to me and I fucking hate it. I think it's more impressive to be able to switch on and off like a dime. Method acting doesn't actually seem as impressive to me. I could be just be a hater though, and full of it. haha

Shpadow

"Crime and drama"? Well they got it half-right I guess.

ExtraBigAssTaco

All I can think of now, and because I saw it recently, is Ian McKellen's bit on Extras. "My day goes something like this. Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Action!, Wizard!, 'YOU SHALL NOT PASS!', Cut!, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian..."

DarthChef

Just to add on the earlier Jonny Greenwood comment, this soundtrack is amazing. One of my favorites. It should have won the Oscar that year for best original score, but it didn't qualify. Jonny did compose an original score, he also used songs from an album he previously released as well as elements from other songs from other artists.

Logan Kerlee

The Last of the Mohicans is a FANTASTIC film that's definitely worth the watch. It may be dated but it's amazing and was made very well.

Logan Kerlee

This movie was pretty lax on the drama. It tried to have us care for some of the characters but those attempts felt false and as though they were unnecessary. I don't know. I really didn't care about any of them.

Logan Kerlee

Are you referring to this movie? lol, because they obviously watched it if they're reacting to it. If not this one, you didn't mention a title. :/

ThePVO

Last of the Mohicans has been recommended so often it seems like you're purposefully ignoring it.

Ginge Tomassi

I recommend going back and watching that short scene after HW leaves Daniel's house as all we need to know is shown to us there. We see in the scene that Daniel clearly loves his son as he plays with him but then he gets up pushes HW to the side and begins to walk off to the Oil derrick in the distance. Daniel loves HW put at every opportunity he had he chose his ambition and drive for success over his son.

BangDroid

This film makes me think about Kenneth Copeland; both oil billionaire and false prophet.

Drew

I think Day-Lewis said that this is the funniest character he’s ever played. While categorically a drama/tragedy, he’s played to be an almost absurdly bad guy

Shibby

Hello Simone's cat at the end :D oh and this was a very good movie I never would have watched it but I was going through old reactions to see something I'd never seen and this was such a treasure thank you so much.
