I'm unreasonably happy about this.

jmundt33a

Eli is so hateable, his fate felt cathartic.

Byron

The characters Paul and Eli are two different characters, played by the same actor.

MPH

This movie is pretty damn good.

Jeff K

While we're on this Daniel Day-Lewis kick, I'll just quickly recommend Last of the Mohicans, which would also fit with the February/love month thing since, even though it's a historical epic, it's very much a love story.

Matthew Schenck

Brilliant movie. Need to watch it a few times to get all of it.

Saddleface

I’m happy you reacted to this. My personal favorite Daniel Day Lewis performance is Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. There is something about his charisma in that role that sets it apart for me.

Jeff K

Another great DDL performance is In the Name of the Father. Fantastic and under-appreciated film (or at least, under-seen these days).

Other Daniel-Day Lewis movies to put on a future poll: Gangs of New York (2002) by Scorsese Lincoln (2012) by Spielberg Phantom Thread (2017) another PT Anderson movie and his last performance before he retired. So happy you watched this. My absolute favorite film of all time. He’s not a filmmaker you can make easy reactions to because they’re so dense and layered with depth, but thankfully he’s only made 9 movies so it’s short filmography to go through and you’re down 2! I will say consider putting Magnolia (1999) on a future poll. Probably Tom Cruise’s best performance and the ending itself would make for a great reaction. Punch-Drunk Love (2002) which is a sweet romantic film that kicked off Adam Sandler’s streak of serious great performances. He’s incredible and if you have social anxiety it’ll speak to you immensely. And I would recommend The Master (2012) because I think it contains the best Joaquin Phoenix performance and it was one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s last performance and quite possibly among his best. Such an incredible filmmaker that I hope you guys explore more.

Jeff K

And now I can’t stop saying “I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!” in my best approximation of DDL. Thanks a lot, guys.

Great reaction, great analysis and great edit. So much of this movie is told in all those "silent conversations" you guys noticed. It's tough to keep the oppressive mood and tension while shortening the scenes. Good work, George. Simone mentioned the score sounding like a horror movie. It's not much of a stretch to call this film horror. But if you're interested in a (somewhat) more conventional horror movie with an equally memorable soundtrack, I am again going to have to plug for Ravenous. That film is a masterclass in transitioning tones, from horror to thriller to action to comedy, and the score is right there to facilitate the whole thing.

Mike Miner

I'd really like to see Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love in the future! Magnolia especially had a profound effect on me. I fell more out of love with PTAs work later, though. Not that the brilliance still isn't there! It's just not for me.

Mike Miner

There's somewhere in the "behind the scenes" where the FX crew says they don't know if or when they could put that massive fire out. Also, this and "No Country for Old Men" have been compared a lot, and I think they were filming in the same location at the same time, and I think the smoke from the oil fire actually messed up the Coen brothers filming No Country. Kinda funny because I think Fargo is the best movie by the Coens, and Magnolia is PTA's best movie; both from the 90s. No question TWBB and No Country are masterpieces, but there was something magical going on in the 90s.

You both kept mentioning the “eerie “ music. It’s scored by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. He also does all string arrangements for the band and is a well respected composer in his own right. I really think the music is its own character in the movie.

Sheens

A personal top 5 movie, so happy you watched this

Callum Cowan

I was thinking of Red Dead Redemption 2 as well! It definitely gives off those vibes. Speaking of Simone playing RDR2 Online, are you guys interested in getting back into the game? I really enjoyed the playthroughs, the learning curve even added some comedy to them. I think you guys (I forgot if George played all of it or not) would love the story. No pressure but I'm sure a lot of us would be excited for that. I do respect the amount of work it is though. I'm sure your schedule is packed already.

Joe Baldwin

i was also of the same opinion as Simone wrt the double meaning of the "I'm finished" line

Florian Geyer

As I saw him on the poster I want to recommend "Gangs of New York", with Jack "There is no room on the door" Dawson, Qui-Gon Jinn and Bill the Butcher :)

mojo shivers

I remember this movie and No Country for Old Men came out close together so I always think of them as a spiritual double feature. But honestly that would make for one hell of an acting showcase double feature—There Will Be No Country for Old Men.

michael clarke

i cant remember if i heard it from the creators, but apparently the point of this movie was to put capitalism and faith against each other. they are always at odds and both methods of control. both characters treating the people around them as a means to an end, which is just a consolidation of power.

Daniel Bjork

Yall should definitely go on a Daniel Day Lews marathon, one of the greatest actors of all time and in TWWB he turns in one of the greatest performances of all time. My Left Foot, Last of the Mohicans, In the Name of the Father, The Crucible, Gangs of New York, Lincoln, and Phantom Thread - all great movies with great performances from, arguably, the GOAT.

Christina Doxstader

I'm disappointed that neither of you said "Well, if the shoe fits" when you were talking about Daniel retiring to work as a cobbler. Just saying

Sevnthdragon

Some suggestions: ‘KPax, ‘I am Sam, ‘Gangs of New York, ‘The Revenant, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon, and ‘Me Myself and Irene (for s’s and g’s)

Enchiladitos

You have to watch the HBO show Deadwood! Same intensity and feel. Lots of big personalities and awesome actors in a great show.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Some of the most creative, elegant and unique dialogue to be found in any medium. Ian McShane forever became one of my favourite actors within his first 5 minutes I saw that show back in 2004.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

He has a short compositional discography so far and I’d say they are all films worth watching, but there’s a kind of magic between him and Paul Thomas Anderson. I’m sure their collaborations will be as celebrated as Hitchcock and Herrmann, Spielberg and Williams, and Leone and Morricone.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

2007 was a phenomenal year for movies, but I’ved pondered that there is some significance that 2 of the most lauded flicks of that year were adaptations from 2 of 20th century America’s most seminal writers, Upton Sinclair and Cormac McCarthy. I’ll leave that for smarter minds than me to decipher.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I’d add Scorsese’s period drama “The Age of Innocence” in there as well. Proposed by Scorsese himself to be his most violent film at the time, I think the better description is it’s his most cruel. And there’s so many cute little 19th century outfits worn by the main cast!

Lee Meehan

Daniel Day lewis is amazing you should see him in "Gangs of New York" with leo.

Nathan Swapp

Gangs of New York is my favorite DDL film

Rob Church

Such an amazing movie. Seeing this in theaters was one of my top 5 movie-going experiences.

Chase Schleich

It's a tie between Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood. I can't pick a favorite. They're both perfect films.

Kangdarius

I’ll forever be in the minority when it comes to this film. DDL films in general tbh

CD

I think I even commented before…when this movie was recommended…what a good film, but tough REACTION it would be. I’ll chime in with other PTA fans: Magnolia and The Master are great flicks. As for DDL…he was Christian Bale, before Christian Bale; VERY method! G&S…I’ve said it before, but…you two are sooo giving, as a channel! I couldn’t believe…right after yesterday’s drop…this was waiting today. Great work 👍

CD

Yes…the Coens mentioned the fire, shutting down production. No Country For Old Men, beat-out TWBB for Best Picture that year (and deservedly so, IMO); but DDL did take home the Oscar for Best Actor. He drinks their (other nominees) milkshake!

Wrencher86

I also think DDL is a bit over-hyped. Guy's got two modes: sensitive and quiet and gruff and shouty. But I do really like this movie, so I can't help you there.

Simon Pegged Me

Daniel Day Lewis established his reputation, I think, with My Left Foot. It's worth a watch.

Katzchen1984

So Paul Dano was originally only cast to play Paul which was a really small roll... but a few days into filming they replaced the actor playing Eli with Paul Dano and changed them to identical twins.

MPH

Gangs of New York is not the best movie, but DDL's performance as Bill the Butcher is amazing. One of the best villains in cinema.
