The NeverEnding Story - Patreon Version

Comments

Jay Davis

Glad this (shared trauma) one snuck through the alternates list. Watchin' right now.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Hey nice! Not ashamed to say me and my mates all wanted our own Falkor as a kid to fly around haha. Considering we’d see this film on television at least once a year it’s no surprise it’s a highly memorable film for a lot of people. The theme song also slaps and is definitely top tier for original songs for a movie that’s out there, written by ol’ legend Giorgio Moroder, I believe.

Senec

As a child of the 80s, I somehow missed this one. But I've seen references in Stranger Things and Robot Chicken. Guess now is as good a time as any to watch it.

Tay Schumaker

I was obsessed with this movie as a child. I watched it so many times.

Jon

nice surprise :)

PIG

“… and his name, was ATREYU” My favorite movie growing up. Still a special place in my heart. Then as a teen I saw The Usual Suspects and then that movie became my obsession.

Paul McBryde

Hmm, I couldn't get this to sync up, and the intro music is different on my version.

PIG

We are watching Cinebinge, who are watching Bastian, who is watching Atreyu.

Jacob King

I love the Neverending Story. Eighties kid’s fantasy is a wild time but this is the benchmark.

Jon

... oh shit... after I Am Legend... - 2 movies in the row that's gonna be tough for Simone

Paul Davey

It's a German movie that had a different score depending where it was released. This isn't the "English" version

silverarrow06

Holy cow, childhood flashback! 😱🤩 I saw this movie as a kid (several times), it started my love for cinema.

droodly

Just a heads up, the version they watched is slightly longer than the copy on iTunes (probably amazon too. It's the same length as mine.) It looks like there are scene shortenings and lengthenings throughout. It's never much, but so frequent it's kinda annoying trying to keep in sync.

Smooticus

Watching child fantasy movies? Now you guys need to watch Time Bandits

Mastervodo

I am disappointed Simone. You weren't weeping yourself into a puddle over the Artax scene. Have you just become jaded now that heart-wrenching, tragic, drawn-out animal deaths only warrant a few "Oh My God's" and a "Jeeeesus"? We need more tears next time we kill an animal on-screen. Work on that.

ExquisiteCapybara

without having watchedit, it might be the german cut? thats slightly longer (102mins according to imdb) has different score and THAT SCENE (if you know, you know) is very slightly different

Ginger

Spoiler below (I guess for people who haven't seen the movie but read comments about a reaction video to the movie?):

Ginger

Just in case anyone is going to repeat the old urban legend that that horse actually died on set due to some elevator malfunction, that has since been debunked multiple times. No animals were hurt during the making of the film.

FWPJR.

I really want to watch this full length version, but I don’t know which streaming service it’s on.

Jay

Hey guys, not sure why you've decided to abandon it here, but can I ask that you keep the split between your 2 windows/screens in the full reaction? It makes it easier to sync up, especially during opening credits.

Cinebinge

for this one specifically it was due to extremely sensitive copyright detection, for some reason the strip down the middle was sufficient to trip the copyright detection bots.

olly.enn

RE: the opening titles - How can people NOT read the names?? :-D If there is nothing else on screen but text, how can a human brain NOT read it while watching? Oh, and I actually DO read names in opening titles, even if there's already something going on. Am I weird...?

DM DC

man, I was really looking forward to this but this version is just way to different. It's just so tough to keep in sync.

Jeff Klonowski

It's time to add The Dark Crystal to your polls

Fernando Alamán

Nah, they should skip the poll and just go and react to it ;-p And Labyrinth next. The more Jim Henson, the better.

WastedPo

How on earth did you manage to avoid watching the version that everyone is familiar with that includes the iconic song at the start?

Cinebinge

Hi WastedPo, no the assumption is incorrect and while we understand the frustration of having different versions, please try not to jump to conclusions. Due to our distance from eachother streaming platforms are almost never possible when filming due to lag spikes causing our reactions to randomly go out of sync with eachother. So when we film we can only ever do either physical or purchased and downloaded digital copies which aren't often available. In this instance this was borrowed to us from mutual friends and we didn't know there even were different versions until this morning when posted. Since the copy we got didn't say any version indications, we didn't think anything about it.

I hate to be the guy who writes that the book is better, but the book is even better. In particular the original German children’s novel by Michael Ende, which is still one of my great possessions from my 80s childhood. The typography and illustrations are amazing: Bastians real world parts are printed in green, parts in Phantásien/Fantastica are printed in red. In the books both strands are interleaved. (The book has a whole second part). Take a look, isn’t it great? I felt like Bastian, reading that as a child. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXh1hzey3Ruf5ozytUe4fTgf4JfSS3gcLcFX9hxyWzaPC2HwKplfFTbPUP8IsOZnhD5HWqjYbfyJFwcQgQLQrHDkwCvNgy3oOLu54pb21Yz9efawMvUlZlEWoirpHwl1iNOiVuEDYdYBxV/s1600/innen2.jpg Michael Ende’s children's novels are in way a meditation about the loss of childhood and innocence (and depression, I see with hindsight). I particularly recommend Momo, also a made a movie. Some of the weirdness is explainable that it’s both a German novel and never meant to be filmed – and then it was filmed, but for the North American market and abridged. But still one of Wolfgang Peterson’s better films. You should really take the plunge and watch Das Boot (1981) or better the 1997 Director's Cut. And for other weird children's movies from the 80s: Ronia Robber's Daughter/Ronja Rövardottar, both the amazing novel by Astrid Lindgren, but also the amazing movie from 1984. Utterly great.

REDR58

Alright, I found the version that Simone and George watched. It is the nearly 102-minute long extended German release version in English (and has subtitles if desired) as several people have discussed earlier and you can find a copy of that here: https://www2.rarbggo.to/torrent/the-neverending-story-1984-extended-2160p-bluray-remux-hevc-dts-hr-5-1-fgt-4910530.html Note that it is a 2160p 51 GB MKV file that seems to be a straight rip of the German 4K disc. I own that disc but have not yet ripped it myself due to lack of space on my Plex server. I scrubbed through to the beginning and end titles and a few random points and it plays just fine. Use at your own risk, but it should be ok. There may be smaller file sized copies out there but I can't find any of the extended German version of the film other than this one.

REDR58

Excellent! I didn't even think to look on Archive.org! Use this instead of the huge file I linked to in my last post.

darkmoobs

Man, between this and I Am Legend, unfortunate weekend for pets. lol

Monica Alarcon

Great movie!... too bad the NEVER made any sequels...

TuvixLogic

Did the audience upset you or something because that keyboard blinking is going to drive me crazy.

Monica Alarcon

I had an Auryn when I was little... It was made of plastic but I loved it and wore it everywhere for a while...

JokerDanny

Now you have to watch the 2 sequels, the third has Jack Black in it.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

not the us version with the better music. The us music is what captures the heart of this film for so many . Forgot you "aquire" your stuff. This is the worst film to "Aquire" . Sorry but I cant even force my self to watch this version . Should have just paid the 4 dollars on amazon

Piep

I have flown on him, there is even a vid of me doing it, sadly only on VHS... As far as i know you can still ride the animatronic dragon in the theme park close to munich.

MikeBdrx

Im gonna be honest, the horse scene never really hit me hard. Because they didn't really expand on the two having an in-depth friendship, (likely do to time constraints) so it doesn't feel like a giant loss for the character. While now watching this as an adult I feel for the horse not knowing whats going on and freaking out but as for as the scene in the movie, well I guess it must carry more weight in the book version.

Odd Thomas

Never seen this, it looked too 'kiddy' (and this is when I was a kid in the 80s). Isn't that D.A.R.Y.L?

Cincassette

I’ve mentioned this before, but Petersens movie “Das Boot” (1981) directors cut from 1998, is a masterpiece! (Heads up, it’s a German language film)

REDR58

As I understand it, the movie version covers about the first half of the book.

Chase Lonnergan

And with The NeverEnding Story finished, you only have to watch Labyrinth and stay awake through Legend, and you have completed the Holy Trilogy of WTF 80s Kids Fantasy Films. Extra bonus points for also watching The Dark Crystal, Willow, Ladyhawke, and Dragonslayer. Although, after writing all of those out, the 80s sure did have a lot of fantasy movies that were made for kids, but weren't exactly made for kids.

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤The orange juice with raw egg thing is simply a way to make drinking raw eggs for breakfast taste better. I think "eating" eggs this way was more common in the 80/90s. But it was also a common hangover cure. So it may be a small detail they added to let us know the dad drinks because he's also having a hard time same as Sebastian. The suffer in silence but move on with your life kind of thing.

Logan Kerlee

lmao, I always thought it was two words as well! You're not alone George. :P I fucking love this movie, you guys! xD If you guys don't dig on this I'll be shocked. I watched this as a youngster for the first time. I actually began with the 2nd movie in the series!! It's FAR less scary than this one is. Much more digestible for children. hahahaha, I'm laughing so much with your take on the image! I just wish that I was looking at it with you guys. :) I'll just wait until I see the YouTube edit for that, instead. He did Air Force One and Troy? I didn't know about that! Obviously shows a director's wide taste. This movie DID scare me when I first watched this. Or rather, the villain - the wolf did. Not to the point of me not wanting to watch this ever again but it freaked me out. lol, don't feel bad George. The drink is a bit strange! I'm watching a German version of this, I guess. xD All of the onscreen text, including the books are all in German. I don't know very much German but the little that I do know is actually being put to use - so that's nice! hahaha, thankfully I know the story so it's okay. :) hahahahaha, love that you're full of laughter in this Simone! This movie transports me back to my younger years every time I watch this. :) YUP! They are! xD hahaha, it's so wild seeing someone realize or recognize, rather, the connection between the film and band. I sincerely hope that you're both enjoying the movie! G'mork is the wolf, yeah. YUP! I remember being BIG sad when Artax died in the swamp. That was his one companion and friend and he watched Artax drown in the swamp pit. :'( "Not that it matters but..." hahahaha, I love that massive turtle. That's Falcor, the luck dragon! I love that creature, too! :) hahaha, so many happy memories tied to this story/movie. :) They did an incredible job with scale in this movie, yeah! The creativity used in this movie is next level, right? I'm not sure who first created this story - but whoever it was, props to them! I swear to god, these flying scenes with Falcor and Atreyu make me feel so happy! Nothing but good vibes and memories. Of course, all of those feelings come to an end - right when they hit The Nothing! G'mork scared me when I was a boy. Bastian speed read that massive book! That's the most unbelievable thing in this movie. A boy couldn't read a book of that size in a single school day. I'm so happy that you both enjoyed this so much! Watching this with you both was such a treat for me. hahahahaha, Simone! You're the best. xD If I'm ever in Munich I'll totally check Falcor out! hahahahaha, George if you do go get a tattoo there, please record the experience. It would be so cool to watch. The actress playing the childlike empress did a fantastic job playing the character! I'm happy that you looked into her work after this. :)

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤I will say on a positive note regarding the version they're watching, I'm watching along with the U.S. theatrical cut. It's taking some doing but I'm making it work. Its the only version I have access to via streaming or renting digitally. I know the movie well enough that even with just the visible strips for what they're watching without the middle (which George said they had to do without via copyright BS), and doing the ol' pause-a-rooskie and wait game here and there, it's doable. The discrepancies between the U.S. theatrical cut and the version they're watching are mostly extreme in the "pre story" part of the movie. Once he starts reading the book the changes in edits aren't as extreme from what I can tell so far.

REDR58

I’ve never seen Dragonslayer but I have the new disc on preorder and am very much looking forward to watching it. I would also recommend “The Secret of NIMH” (1982) by Don Bluth. Wonderful animation. And though I generally do not care about differences of source material between books and movies, I think the book is a better story because it does not involve magic like the movie, and I think just science alone works better for the story than magic does. But the movie is excellent.

REDR58

If you can bring yourself to change your mind, look at Tenwyn’s message below with a link on archive.org for this version of the movie. No, it doesn’t have the song everyone loves but it’s an interesting comparison to what many of us are used to.

Dioskur

BTW Michael Ende, the author of this, has written some of the most fantastic stories. There are few people who can make up realy new things and he can. Unique ideas are rare, most people just copy and rearrange. You should try "Momo" a very sweet movie written by him as well.

Jeff Klonowski

2 more great 80's fantasy movies: Krull and Willow.

Jay

I've just started this other version, that I never knew existed and I'm immediately dismayed. #wheresLimahl?

Jay

And WTF is going on with Snail man's voice? It's driving me mad:)

REDR58

The old gymnasium at my grade school had an attic something like the one in the movie, but much smaller and most of it was inaccessible as it was over the curved ceiling of the gym.

REDR58

Yeah that dub for Deep Roy’s Teeny Weeny character is really distracting.

Jay

I haven't watched this in full in over 20 years. It's testament to how much I watched it as a kid that I recognized every difference. All the stretched out scenes, dialogue added in or missing, different voices for characters and different musical cues. It was still a blast. Artex sinking is still hard to watch and Rockbiter talking to Atreyu really got me this time. Total absence of Limahl is shocking though:)

Chase Schleich

Really wish you guys would appoint a patron to be your "version picker." Many people would volunteer. You tell them what films you're going to watch that month and they tell you which version to watch. I'm not watching this film so it doesn't effect me this time, but if it did, I wouldn't be able to watch because I'm not downloading a 51 GB torrent file to get the right version. Not the first time this problem has come up though and won't be the last.

JayF

Well I had planned on just watching the movie via YT but apparently you're on a different version. This is one I skipped when I was young and I'll just pass on it again I suppose.

Doug's Night Terrors

When I was 9, this movie came out, and I absolutely loved it! I watched it countless times as a kid, and it always made me emotional, and I never knew why. I haven't seen it in ages. Watched it with you guys, and my eyes kept welling up (at the weirdest times), which doesn't happen to me much these days. Whenever Falkor showed up on the screen, I'd start tearing up. The part where Falkor is searching for Atrayu and calling his name and the end when Bastian's first wish is granted, especially. It wasn't until today that I made the connection. My grandfather, who I was super close to, passed away the year before this movie came out. It's hard for me to remember much about my grandfather now, but there's something about Falkor (his voice, laugh, something) that reminds me of my grandfather. It's weird how your subconscious can trigger emotions even when you're not consciously aware of why.

11114422

how would that solve the problem though? like with I Am Legend, some people prefer one and some prefer the other and having 1 patron decide would still anger the other half who prefer the other version. and secondly, how would they decide which patron gets that role over someone else?

Doug's Night Terrors

That makes me think....This may be why some people get so angry when reactors criticize the movies they love. They probably have emotional attachments to the movies outside of the movie itself. They may not even be aware of why they're so angry about it. Probably also why people actually HATE instead of just dislike certain movies.

Tomas

This is the version I grew up with (though dubbed in Swedish lol). The 80s pop song in the US version definitely isn't what makes the movie for most of the world, so don't worry about it.

Doug's Night Terrors

I actually watched the US version during the watch along. I had to pause the movie or the reaction at times to sync up but it was fine.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Too bad they couldn't react to the song, but as others said...it shouldn't change the story, but it is weird there were other composers for other versions...

DM DC

Not sure if anyone has ever mentioned or suggested, but if you ever happen to get to Legend, I highly recomend the Theatrical version. There is a directors cut but the musical score (in my opinion) is not as good as the theactrical. Again that's my opinion. I am not sure if there is a different version for over seas or not.

Jacob King

The death of Artax traumatised multiple generations so no one would make fun of Simone for feeling upset. The book is well worth a read. The movie is only the first half of the story. The conversation with Gmork is my favourite scene in the book he has been left chained in the city of the dead after the nothing cultists have flung themselves into the abyss. The author Michael Ende grew up in Nazi Germany to a family that was anti-fascist and there are a lot of parallels between German society during and after the war to different aspects of Fantastia.

Joel

I first saw this when I was 7, and I'm still traumatized by Artax's death...

Mitchell Bowker

If you like this movie, you'll love Wolfgang Petersen's 293 minutes original uncut version of DAS BOOT :D

Raven Dark

I don't know if someone pointed this out already, but the name Bastian called out was Moonchild. That probably seems like a weird name for his mother to have, but here's the thing. This came out in '84 (I think?), so his mother was probably born in the 60s. It wasn't uncommon for women at that time to have names like Rainbow, Sapphire, River, ect, Moonchild fits the time in which she was born. It also sounds like a fantasy name too, though, and I always thought it suited the empress really well. It doesn't say it in the movie, but she's officially known as the Childlike Empress. That's why she has such a presence about her. You get the feeling in the book that she's supposed to be ancient. The actress portrayed that beautifully. The Swamps of Sadness (and by extension, Morla, the Giant Turtle) are supposed to be representations of sadness and depression, like George said. The Swamps of Sadness has always been a genius concept to me. After Artax dies, we see how sad Atrau is, and this shows us the horrible cycle of depression and the way it sucks you in and keeps you there. When Artax died, Atrau got even sadder, which is why it almost sucked him under. Atrau almost drowned in his own sadness, and he would have done if Falcor hadn't pulled him out in time. That's how depression can feel. As if you're drowning. It's just a beautifully clever concept. Thanks for sharing your reaction, Simone and George. Great job, as always.

DM DC

Very cool of you to offer that link. Thank you so much. I will say, not a fan of the snail rider's voice dub. I find it odd they used another actor to dub over the original actor's voice. And I have to say, I'm not a fan. The G'Mork also sounded a bit different but wasn't bad. Another strange thing I noticed in this version was the music was slightly different. This music was featured in the US release but there was some missing. And the theme song wasn't featured anywhere either. Finding that a lilttle unusual. But was glad to be able to take this journey with you both. So I went on a hunt and I was able to find the opening of the U.S. release of the film. I thought I'd link it here so you both could have a look at what the music and opening of the film was like for the U.S. release. This was what I grew up with, which is why when Simone commented on the music and I didn't see the clouds I was confused. I had no idea the German release was different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7Lpc5yT2H8

djKENTO

Sad to see the Georgio Moroder score is removed from this version. Georgio Moroder is one of the most influential keyboard players of all time. The man pushed synth music so far all on his own. A total legend and Daft Punk even dedicated a song to him on heir final album because of how influential he was. Georgio was also the composer for Scarface. Here's the song that Daft Punk dedicated to and worked with him on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhl-Cs1-sG4 & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WN0T-Ee3q4 here is the original theme by Liamahl and score are INCREDIBLE.

Poddington

George "is this based on a book" Me *points at the book the kid is reading*

windyWin

It's strange knowing this version doesn't have the Never-ending Story Theme song. I associate that song with this movie more than anything else. But I can understand the reason why they thought it needed to be removed.

Ben

I started watching the other version at first and I was pretty confused to hear you describe the music as dark and creepy and "ominous", as I was grooving along to the Limahl song lol I figured your perception of that song was a little different to mine! It made more sense when I finally checked out this version!

Poddington

I think seeing this as an adult is very different than seeing it as a kid, especially when you're a kid that is in a similar position to Bastion. Escaping to fantasy worlds to deal with real world experiences at an age when others say that you should grow up and live in the real world, this film really resonates. Always wanted a luck dragon growing up :) The empress was incredible in this film and it's surprising the actress never really wanted to do more. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but the version I and many others saw came with the song Never Ending Story by Limahl that is just as iconic. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WN0T-Ee3q4&ab_channel=RHINO

Tay Goodson

How different is the German cut version to the original? Just some voice over stuff? Where do you find the version they watched?

Christopher Feiertag

Thanks for bringing Wolfgang Petersen back. Another chance for me to emphasize my recommendation for his 6-part TV-series „Das Boot“. Or alternatively the Director‘s Cut-movie version. (definitely less preferable, but still an amazing experience)

Doug's Night Terrors

I watched the us version during the watch along. The opening credits seen to be a bit longer and there's some extra footage at the beginning with the kid in the attic on the version they watched. The rest seems to be the same but the frame rate is different, so you end up needing to pause the movie playback now and again to sync up. A bit of a pain but Its doable. Didnt ruin it for me.

Travis

Is there no video to reference against anymore? That’s going to make things challenging 🙁

REDR58

The last comment I’m gonna make about this German version is that if anybody watches Stranger Things and has only ever seen this German version they’ll miss a pretty good reference of a big plot point from season 3! 😄 Spoiler link: https://youtu.be/O5HQ1sZseKg?si=Bt8ytAf7T1K3V51Z

REDR58

Use the Archive.org link that was added in the description above. It will show you the correct version.

SpankTheMonk

I see many people recommend other 1980s fantasy movies. I would like to recommend a 1992 fantasy, Orlando with Tilda Swinton based on the Virginia Wolf novel of the same name. What a wonderful weird and amazing adaptation to a difficult novel by Sally Potter. And also the Terry Gilliam ( well almost any of his films) trilogy of sorts Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. You are really a dynamic duo, thanks for sharing your reactions with us!

David N

The second movie of this had a bird that scared me for a decade when I was a kid. This movie makes me sad every time I see a horse in a swamp; these movies really mess you up when your in the target age range.

Grumblefunk

I was living in Germany when this came out so this is the version I remember seeing, great to watch again. Now as an 'old', I can't believe the subtext going on here, huge existential mid-life crisis vibes, no wonder it rekt a bunch of us back then lol

Thomas Hilbert

Well, the fact that we here in Germany saw a different version doesn't mean that we don't know about the Limahl song :P It was on our radios.

Jonas Buckner

The US version has a lot tighter, quicker editing, and it also makes it more clear how the parts of Fantasia represent his grief over his mother's death. The Swamp of Sadness will drown you if you succumb to the depression. Morla the Turtle has gone numb. Gmork the Wolf is his rage. The Nothing is a loss of imagination. "It has to hurt if it is to heal." When Bastian gives the Childlike Empress his mother's name, he's making peace with her absence and understanding that she will always be his mother.

Gary Fixler

Now you can finally see the worst cosplay in the history thereof, care of Doctor Molotov: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=2628906887163439&set=pcb.2628907563830038 That scene was so upsetting for every kid I knew back then, we're still not over it, all these decades later. Watching it this time, though, I get why it didn't hit Simone as we expected it would. As an adult, it is a lot less upsetting. They just don't spend enough time on the build-up before the loss. I guess we didn't need much build-up as kids; we were instant best friends with every animal. Oh, and it gets worse; it's articulated: https://www.facebook.com/Doctor.Girlfriend.MD/videos/539072473491636/ And just check out the rest of her stuff while you're at it. She's amazing - Splinter, Astro Boy, Gelflings, Weird Al, and so many more, all top notch: https://www.facebook.com/Doctor.Girlfriend.MD/photos_by

Thomas Hilbert

I loved watching this movie as a child in Germany. I'm currently visiting Vancouver for the first time - and I visited the very spot where the bullies chase Bastian down the alleyway and put him in the bin. It's like visiting my childhood, such an amazing feeling.
