This ending is much closer to the book. In the book the infected can talk and have a whole culture. It ends with the protagonist realizing that he is their legendary monster

Of the two I Am Legend endings, this is the most accurate - though that's not saying much. At the time of the film's production, Will Smith (and his team) had a tendancy to sign on for projects and alter scripts (heavily) to fit Will's brand (him being an action hero). It happened with I Am Legend and with I, Robot most notably (both being based on books originally).

You should watch Vincent Price’s “Last Man on Earth” and Charlton Heston’s “The Omega Man” for the earlier versions of the story based on the book by Richard Matheson.

I can see why they didn't, though; it would make the twist at the end a lot more predictable if we see from the start that they're NOT actually just mindless monsters. It's been years since I've read the book, though; I'm sure they could have come up with a way to incorporate it into the movie. But I'm just guessing at why they chose not to.

This movie is so mediocre, but great reaction as always.

The movie isn’t bad. But it’s not good, either. A lackluster film that’s pretty indicative of how “the suits” in Hollywood can ruin good intellectual properties. It was even worse for “I, Robot”, though. Smith had a whole team of screenwriters at the time, who would rewrite the hell out of these scripts and change the into something unrecognizable. To “build his brand”. One movie of this Will Smith era, where this wasn’t completely screwed up, is “Hancock”, which is actually a pretty decent adaptation. And a fun movie. But flies mostly under the radar.

I’ve read the book and this is a decent adaptation. The whole idea in the book is that the Neville character is the boogie man of a new society created by the infected.

Simone is right. That is the Brooklyn Bridge, which is one of my favorite pieces of architecture in the world. If you are ever in New York, take a stroll across it. There is a pedestrian walkway above the roadway, and it is a really lovely walk. Beautiful views of the city.

Whenever I watch Hancock I feel like I”m watching two movies - the first half of the movie is great about a reluctant, jaded superhero. And the second half, which is…..a hot mess.

In the original book, he was the scarry monster that came when you were sleeping and stole people - the monster in the 'dark'

I was thinking the same thing. Loved Omega Man and the infected were so much better & creepier!! I liked I am Legend but was very dispointed in the cgi.....Also great book the infected were vampires originally!
