hello! as i stated yesterday, i'm running a poll on how i should start watching shpd.

the manga starts with the content in episodes 119-120, and people have suggested that i watch those two episodes first. others have suggested just starting with episode 1. please vote for your preference below!

not sure how split the votes will be, but just a reminder to please be civil. :)

What? I don't understand. We're talking about Naruto Shippuden right? Why are people talking about starting at episode 119 - 120 of Naruto Shippuden? Episode 1 of Naruto Shippuden follows the manga right after the timeskip. I don't get it.

Starting with ep 1 definitely flows better episodically, but imo starting with ep 119-120 definitely has better long-term story payoff.

manga wise yes.....it depends though I've seen some start with the first episode and some with theses so half and half. I'm in the middle about this so I'm not sure depends though.

Would you say the dynamic between team 7 is unhealthy? I think you could see it as codependency and obsession. Or you could see it as simply wanting to save Sauske and continue being friends in the village.

Episodes 119 and 120 cover events that happened before the end of part 1. Look up chapters 239-244

i saw you posted that you watched OG in dub to get the same experience as ppl who grew up with the anime. so going with episode 1 feels like a good choice to keep that continuity. but neither option will affect your experience in a drastic manner imo. i didnt grow up with naruto (i only started it in 2018) and i just watched shippuden from ep 1 since no one told me otherwise. ive rewatched the series through other reactors like 5 times for what its worth :p

The Sasuke Retrieval arc ends at chapter 238. The following few chapters are not what is presented in episode 1 of Shippuden.

Episodes 119-120 is a "Gaiden" or side story that was released in between the break from the OG Naruto manga to Shippuden manga (even though Kishi never split the manga as it was only ever known as "Naruto" unlike the anime did). So watching this first, could be seen to be "canonical" from how Kishi laid it out in the original manga.

Because in the manga, it came before the start of shippuden. but the anime skipped it and then brought it back a hundred something episodes later. part one naruto ends in chapter 238 and episodes 119-120 cover chapters 239–244 so canonically, it just makes sense to start from there.

I would argue a third option: Episode 1 actually starts with a chapter that doesn't happen until the second arc in the Shippuden Series. If we want to follow manga time line Alana episode 1 at exactly the 10:00 mark on Crunchroll and that is Chapter 1 of Naruto Shippuden without the jump forward in story.

I think it's unnecessary to point out 2 episodes like that. When I watched it in order I was pleasantly surprised with these two episodes, I think it would hit even more when you don't know that there is a good short arc coming.

I remember on a previous post you mentioned you were gonna switch to sub for shippuden is that still the plan? I am just curious as to why that's sorta what I did way back when I watched it for the first time only I was half way through shippuden and only did so because there was no more english dub episodes. Going back I do think the sub is better for shippuden but I don't think the differences is worthy enough to switch halfway through when you don't have to and there are scenes I still think are better in the dub.

This is a first for me I think these episodes hit more later on with more context but it’s totally up to you. I think starting from the first ep like most people do makes most sense personally

In my humble opinion, watch episode 1 first, as it's the starting point and it launches Shiipuden, then episodes 119 and 120 if you wish. In any case, Alana, thank you for your reactions; I'll follow you to the end of this adventure.

I'm cool with either way.... I'm a Manga reader, so when we didn't get what is 119-120 off the bat in the anime, I was disappointed. Only thing I'll say is definitely don't watch the opening to those episodes if you choose to watch 119-120 first.

it's crazy to me that we are switching to sub now that the dub is actually going to get good. the people demanding sub all the time are actual fanatics who refuse to look at the fact that dub is so much better for this show and they just hate anything that is not original japanese dub. We watch every show in japanese and now when there is one of the only shows that actually has really good dub we can't have that. it's just sad.

While I also really want dub (I listen to the reactions more than watch so I wouldn't be able to read the subtitles) I don't think the right way to go about expressing the preference to watch dub over sub is to attack the people who have different preferences. They aren't hateful or in denial about the quality of the dub they just like sub and you and I like dub. It's not that deep. Let Alana know you'd prefer dub, or in my case I can really only consume her content if it is dub, and if enough people express the same she'll make that call based on her audience. You belittling or attacking sub is only diminishing the legitimacy of the dub part of the fanbase. We all just like NARUTO.

Its totally fine either way you decide! It's not as big a deal as some people would make it out to be so don't stress it. I can see both sides and understand why people would want 119/120 first but going in the way a majority of Naruto viewers who were blind to the manga did with just release order would be my recommendation

Im not attacking them or belitteling them, im just saying how i see it. If you read their comments on anything dub related its always dub=cringe no matter what, they refuse to even think that dub could be good. They are the ones who always attack those who prefer dub. Ofcourse its not all of them who are like this but this is what i have gathered from reading comment sections over the years.

It’s Alana’s decision we should respect it but I do feel like the transition is gonna feel jarring :(. I mostly just don’t like the superiority complex over watching sub over dub lol. I thought we were over that in 2025. While I do agree certain scenes are delivered better in sub, I don’t think it diminishes the fact that dub is good too. Mind you Naruto is among the few animes I prefer in dub 🥲 there’s certain character personalities that shine more in dub too imo

SUB IS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER. Soooooo many iconic and goated moments that are ruined by the dub. Also, imo even though the manga starts with 119, I think watching from episode 1 is wayyyyyy better. People saying it flows better starting with 119 is just cap. In my opinion, starting with episode 1 makes payoffs later in the series sooo much more surprising and satisfying.

I'll vote to start with chapters 119 and 120, since that's how the author intends the story to be read, because that's what happens in the manga. I'll also say that I personally think the original language is better than the dub, although the dub is good.

The only thing I'd like to stress is Shippuden gets very spoilery with it's openings and episode titles. Like to the degree of showing twists and stuff in episode titles it's crazy lol, so be careful 👍

No. Naruto Shippuden episodes 119 & 120 are specific background story episodes for a specific character in Naruto. From Kishimoto's perspective, watching these episodes before watching episode 1 of Naruto Shippuden is considered to be the "authentic" way to view it.

it's better to get it out of the way at the beginning since the episodes drop in a unrelated arc. also the production doesnt care about the flow of the show considering a good portion of the anime is random filler designed to keep the show running and making money

Don’t let the Sub elitism fool you. All the dub actors do an amazing job in Shippuden. Plus, Sasuke’s English voice actors speaks Japanese fluently.

On the sub vs dub issue i recommend sticking to the dub. Both are good but the dub's translation of the dialogs is WAY better, plus after 135 episodes i feel you're already emotionally attached to the dub voices.

Can you please just run a poll on whether to watch Shippuden in DUB vs SUB? Also, no one seems to be talking about episode 220 of OG Naruto? It's a pretty important episode and considered canon to the story.

i will consider making a poll (not promising that i do) because i'm surprised at how many people are advocating for dub for shippuden, but if i do i'm going to turn off comments because this has caused me so much unneeded stress i fear lmao - also, i watched the end of 220, so that will be included in todays reaction!

No pressure to answer any of these, but these are things I used to talk about with my buddies when it was coming out weekly. 1) If you could choose a summoning jutsu, what would it be? Can be something we've seen or not seen. 2) Are there characters you want to see more of in Shippuden? Less of? And why? 3) Predictions on any characters that might die in Shippuden, if any? 4) Whose character design in Shippuden are you most interested in seeing?

A lot of ppl drop the show saying Naruto is too obnoxious or unfit to be the MC saying Sasuke or Rock Lee are better what do you think? Also Naruto’s whiskers: do you think they’re markings or actual whiskers? What are your top 5 characters? Favorite arc? Dub and sub are equally iconic just flip a coin imo.
