Darlin's! 🩵

Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024.

This means:

Apple will be applying their 30% App Store fee to all NEW memberships purchased in the Patreon iOS app, in addition to anything bought in Patreon Shops.

🔷️ So basically I recommend if you can purchase things on Patreon outside of Apple that would be the way to go! 🤗🌸

Does this affect you in a good or bad way Mandy?

Alan

Apple have enough money already.

Alan

(and maybe it's time they paid some tax on it, just sayin)

Alan

Obvs I mean IN THE COUNTRIES WHERE THEY EARNED IT, or stole it, in this case

AWR93

Cheers Steve, I’ll give that a read

Mandy Cane Lane

Yeah, I was surprised when I read the email. Also 30% seems quite excessive 😬🫣

Mandy Cane Lane

Well, the way I have things set up it does not affect me at all, but whoever uses Apple for Patreon has to pay 30% more

Mandy Cane Lane

In the transparency and letting everyone know it is an Apple thing? Genuinley asking because I didn't fully understand the comment 🤭

Thinking Out Loud

I mean support patreon calling out apple on this

There are many things I like about Apple, their devices and services. But this mindset that they somehow deserve to get a 30% cut of everything that is bought through the apps on a iOS device really is so puzzling and I get quite mad about it. The app makers can't even write "Go to our website instead". They can only write "You can't by anything here" if they don't want to give Apple the 30% cut by having a payment option in the app. Spotify for instance, writes (translated from Norwegian): "You can't upgrade to Premium in the app. We know it's not ideal.". I really hope EU forces Apple to change this too, I think they're looking into it. And often when EU forces companies to change something for the EU, they don't bother having different systems for other parts of the world so it becomes the standard. But yes, go to the Patreon website for this stuff. You can do it on your iOS device.. just in a browser and not the app.

Ahh cool! Yeah, I got several emails, but wasn't sure if they sent them to everyone or only the creators, so figured a post was necessary. Luckily it won't affect existing members or purchases 🙌🏻

Mandy Cane Lane

Yeah, I feel like this was a horrible idea on their part that will affect them negatively. Hopefully it will be reverted soon🤞🏻, but glad Patreon is letting everyone know. Easy workaround if you know what is up! 🙌🏻✨️

Yeah it's easy to get around it and that makes it even more dumb on Apple's part. But this will likely not go away anytime soon. Apple has had these rules for a long time, but Patreon has gone under the radar for some reason. Now they have sat down and gone through their list and thought "How can we add even more cash to our already ginormous pile" and then Patreon was put under their heal. Yes, like I said.. It makes me mad 😡... It's like if the company that made the ice cream truck should get a 30% cut of every ice cream sale made out of it for all time.. I guess then that Patreon has decided to keep the option of signing up for memberships in the app for iOS users, and just raise the price to compensate. That is one way of doing it (and not the "Spotify" way). So then it's just the stupid, naive Apple users that are robbed and they can thank only them selves :) I've been aware of this for some time, but it's not that long ago that I noticed I was paying more for Youtube Premium than necessary just because I had signed up through the Youtube app on my iPhone. I cancelled it, and signed up again through youtube.com, and all is well. I will stop now.

Typical Apple money hungry bastards
