PASS THAT FORK COUSIN

Jeff K.

It's fucking go time.

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

I love the chaos at holiday dinners. I've seen worse chaos; this was nothing. Total fucking chaos, and everybody crushed it.

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Diamond Dave's face expressions look like everybody else at the dinner table, like he's there 🤣. I loved it

Jeff K.

Gillian Jacobs (Tiff, Richie’s ex/the mother of his child) is married to the creator of this show, Chris Storer. It’s funny too, that he wrote a part for his partner as Richie’s ex since Richie is based on the real owner of Mr. Beef, since he and Storer grew up together.

Heard chef 😂 I’ve had family functions that went down horribly similar to what we see in ep 6. The underlying tension where everyone feels they have to walk on eggshells made the episode feel so real and gave me literal flashbacks. I was sensing a lot of undiagnosed/unaddressed mental illness in Donna and Mikey. They both acted very similarly (uncontrollable emotions, lashing out, extreme anger, etc) & were both struggling with the idea of self-worth. Donna getting mad at Sugar for asking her if she was okay hit me to my core. The verbal and public humiliation Donna gave Sugar over that simple question has happened verbatim to me and triggered my fight or flight so bad. It’s sad that Donna felt so on edge that she couldn’t help but lash out at the people trying to help her. I’m conflicted on Lee. At some level—I really appreciate his character calling out the bullshit seen in the family, but his hypocrisy and cruel wordings make it hard to fully be on board with him. Those comments towards Michael repeating a story was completely unnecessary. I loved uncle Jimmy this episode—he was such a great guy for keeping up Richie’s lie. I also liked how he didn’t completely disagree with Lee either, but mostly with the way he went about it. Pete catching multiple strays hurt my soul! He’s a nice guy and didn’t deserve it! When Sugar threw away his dish and said it stunk, she reminded me of Donna a bit. Further proof outside of Mikey that Donna’s behavior is indeed rubbing off on others. It’s sad because I’m sure that neither Sugar nor Mikey want to be that sort of person. I’ll end this here by saying: this is the type of family function where you drop by to grab a plate then leave 😂😂

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Told a story you've told a million times. 🤔 When I heard Lee say that, I instantly thought of Oak. Once in a while, he would tell us a story we had already heard. 😴 I'm like, "Really, guy?" But with Jon Bernthal (Micheal), I can listen a million times to his stories. 😂

ct

Same LMFAO. Grab me a plate of those 7 fishes and I’m ready to sit back and relax!

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Mason Quinn likes Pete because Mason Quinn is probably that guy at events. Who's just too normal and kind of a party pooper, and when he walks in a room, he's the one to not get the joke or laugh awkwardly. 😂

Renabette

"I can't believe the world didn't explode with all the star power here" - Mason Quinn.

Renabette

It did though. It really did.

Re: your question about ad libbing - the majority of this episode was scripted, but yes, there was *some* ad-libbing throughout - especially in the fight scene between Mikey and Lee at the dinner table, with throwing the forks and the "you're nothing" repetition. Berenthal did improvise trying to flip the table. From the Oral History: "Bob Odenkirk: I basically did the script, but once things get really hot, well, that’s all made up out of Chris Storer’s hot-as-heck setup. Chris teed up this intensity with his wonderful writing and then it’s just hot-headed, explosive fireworks." "Jon Bernthal: Mikey does not like Lee. I whispered in Chris’ ear, “I want to flip the table over.” And his face lit up with excitement." Diamond Dave, you were right about previous comments explaining that Lee was "L" -- "Uncle" Lee was identified and named by Uncle Jimmy in the S2 premiere - Jimmy is "K" (Kalinowski), Lee is "L" (Lee Layne) and "B" was for Berzatto (Carmy's dad). I wasn't concerned that Donna was going to use a gun on herself or someone else because if that had happened, we would have heard about that in the show by now. They talk about Mikey killing himself, so if Donna had also killed herself (or someone else) they would have brought that up at some point in relation to Mikey's suicide. (Also I'm pretty sure Sugar asked Carmy if he'd "called mom" in the S1 premiere, but I'd have to check) Where you've seen Richie's wife before (Gillian Jacobs) - she played Britta in Community. Re: holidays at my home growing up - heard, chef. Super-heard.

Fishes was not an in season Christmas episode. Each season of The Bear has released in full in the last week of June, every year. Though they haven't announced an official release date for S5 yet, it's a safe bet it will be released around June 24th, 2026, give or take a day or so.

Amber

I’ve been so excited to see your reaction to this episode. Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal both won Emmy’s for their performances in this episode.

MB

Hard agree on the amazing writing! This show is special. If you want something on the level (or even better in my opinion), please please please consider doing Succession next.

fatoumata cisse

I love the constant rage baiting mason does to Oak with his music knowledge 😭

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

bullshit? I don't know if I would call it that, MQ. Does Mason Quinn know how flirting works? I mean, it's different for everybody, but come on, guy. 😂

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

I think Mason Quinn is right He said the relationship is not going to work because they're both busy. Not because Carmy wasn't interested in her. check the tape, Oak. 😂

Ana

Heard chef lol minus the car through the house (just sub in cops coming in to arrest someone) this was very much like my family holidays. Watching this episode with my boyfriend he couldn’t believe it, while I was like oh this reminds me of my childhood! Then he finally connected why I’m not big on holidays. My family has calmed down dramatically since then but just the action of getting ready for thanksgiving or Christmas dinner makes me nauseous still. I was in 8th grade when my hair started going grey from stress and no surprise, the first grey hairs I saw was during winter break in middle school right before Christmas 🤣 Amazing reaction! Love the discussion and how phenomenal this episode was that it literally caused physical reactions from you guys! The feelings of being anxious and Oak hiding his face towards the end like he was watching a horror movie😂

Knightmare

Omg. I thought it stopped at season 2. That's something to look forward to for sure!

Knightmare

Episode 6 was an excruciating watch holy crap 😭 These people feel so much like people and not like characters. It's insane. And it hurts, honestly.

Cristy

I have a love-hate relationship with episode six. Artistically, it's perfection. It was shot on 35mm film and is saturated with yellow to make it look and feel aged and the performances are so good you forget they're famous actors. But emotionally, it leaves me crushed and exhausted. This is the best portrayal of family dysfunction I have seen in a single television episode. It was viscerally shattering.

Cristy

I feel like Donna is more of the reason that Carmy and Nat are in Al-Anon than Michael is. And in the previous episode when Carmy told Claire he knew the feeling of caring for sad, drunk people and she said I know you do, they were most probably referring to his mum.

Cristy

I remember watching this for the first time and wondering if anything was off script. There is an episode of Jon Bernthal's podcast with Jamie Lee Curtis and it's brought up that much of the scene where Mikey and Richie tell Carmy they saw Claire was improvised. Also, Oliver Platt implied on The Rich Eisen Show that his lines during the fork fight scene at the table were improvised.

Cristy

Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis both won Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress for this episode and rightfully so.

Cristy

Yes, please! They'd love Succession.

DTGstl314

The writers got the chronology messed up with the opening "256 weeks until opening" caption for Fishes. The present day in the show in Episode 5 is 6 weeks before the restaurant is scheduled to open, and the calendar in the season premiere indicates they are planning to open on May 31, 2023. 256 weeks before May 31, 2023 would have been... July 5, 2018. If we assume Fishes takes place on December 25, 2018, 256 weeks later would be... November 20, 2023 - about 6 months later than the planned restaurant opening on the show.

Katie

Can’t wait for the next episode. Gotta be the best episode. This one comes second for sure

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Maybe June, but since all of the actors have become so in-demand, it might be later in the year. They haven't started shooting yet.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Yeah - all of the actors have said that the fork fight was a lot of in-the-moment work and not scripted.

Katie

I’ve seen a lot of people say so. Outside of here

Jaylennn

idk what you mean by minority, forks is literally the highest rated episode of the show......

DTGstl314

Fair. There are a few continuity errors from time to time in this show. In the S2 premiere, Carmy is sitting in his apartment in full sunlight at around 6 pm - and it's February. It would not still be that light out at 6pm in February. There's another continuity error that happens early in S4, but I won't say what it is right now.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I find those don't bother me that much. I've seen some whopper continuity problems in my day - these aren't that bad IMO.

DTGstl314

Perhaps, but they didn't start filming S3 until February 2024, four months before it was released. The show doesn't require a ton of post-production editing, unlike say House of the Dragon or The Last of Us. It's probably been the most consistent show in terms of its release schedule of any streaming show I've ever watched... S1 - June 23, 2022 S2 - June 22, 2023 S3 - June 26, 2024 S4 - June 25, 2025 And in the middle of all of that was a pretty lengthy writer's strike in 2023, which set the production schedules of most scripted shows back several months. But The Bear S3 still released on schedule in late June 2024.

Esther K

Quinn said he purposely gave her the wrong number because Carmy has to put work first. Quinn never said he wasn't into her. Oak said he didn't give her the wrong number on purpose and that she was an old flame of his, and totally wants this to happen Other crap was said, but that was the gist.

DTGstl314

This technically wasn't Gillian Jacobs' first performance on this show, though you probably didn't realize it when we first heard her character... in the S1 finale, it was her voice on the voicemail message when Richie called Tiff from the jail. The actress has been in a bunch of different stuff, probably most famously as Britta on the NBC sitcom Community (which also starred Joel McHale, another actor who has a cameo appearance on this show as the evil chef in NYC that Carmy worked under). Jacobs has a very direct connection to the show - she's been in a relationship with show creator Christopher Storer for a long time.

DTGstl314

Forks is probably my favorite episode, and I think it is easily the most heart-warming episode of the series, but I still think of Fishes as the best episode from a technical point of view - the acting, writing, and direction it took to make this chaos happen so perfectly is a pretty rare gem. The one-shot episode from S1 is the only thing that comes close to this on a technical level. It's a very stressful episode and you don't walk away from it feeling great (I've heard some people say it gives them PTSD from their own messed up family gatherings), but that isn't the purpose of this episode. It's a deep insight into what makes both Carmy and Sugar tick by showing you the home life they grew up in. Now you see why they're both so messed up in their own way (Carmy shuts down, Nat always wants to fix everything).

Maggie B

Heard chef. The first time I saw this episode I was physically shaking and crying by the end because it was just that triggering but it truly speaks to the mastery of the actors and writers and the frenetic camera work that made it feel so damn real.

Annie Baylin

Quite a few flashbacks of several messy Christmases ago came flashing into my mind. I was really triggered at one point that I almost was not gonna keep watching. Not about my mom, but about my dad. His extreme OCD behavior has triggered a lot of horrible arguments, especially at holidays. Not that I don't love my father, I love him dearly, but man... our relationship has never been the best, and it just saddens me deeply that it's always been especially around the holidays horrible things were spoken.

TinCan Cosmanaut

Phenomenal episode. Succession has this level of acting consistently. Hyper realistic. Swept the Emmy's one year 19 Emmy's won total run The Bear has won 21 Emmy's

Krios

Heard, Chef. :/ This was my second time watching episode 6 - the first time I watched it a few years ago actually made me stop watching the Bear because it hit way too close to home and freaked me out too badly. Pretty much wept through the entire episode and had to go for long, long walk in the middle of the night as soon as the episode finished to try and get it out of my system. It's wild that Cicero talks about memory and weird stuff bringing things up here, in an episode that probably brought a lot of viewers right back to things they thought they'd gotten over. Fantastic, ache-y television, but oof. Big oof. But hey, at least we got MQ saying "circlejerk" to episode 5, that was fun.

MarisoL

"They are getting close" 😆 you guy's reaction to Claire & Carm is hilarious. Also realizing that Sugar is not an endearing nickname but a reminder of her mistake geez. You can see why Pete is Sugar's peace.

Jade Lastra

For my reading of Mikey (+Lee's) story after the conversation with Carmy I think he saw his brother had a future and working at the beef would weigh Carmy down. I think it's also fair that Richie had alluded wanting to leaving as well. There's a quick cut of Mikey taking the blanket out and going for a smoke, but I think it's a fair to say that he might have also gotten high. Which might explain why he is so high energy in the living room when he's telling the story, much more disorganized in how he tells it than the season 1 flash back (for reference). Lee recognizes that Mikey is high and likely calls out the story being told before because of this out of frustration that no one has said anything. It's fair to say Richie knew (the s1 convo about it) as he had followed Mikey out, and Jimmy as well. After a second watch I think Michelle might have known because she told Carmy to come visit her to avoid staying with his mom and mikey.

Jade Lastra

+ I forgot to add that as much as Lee seemed like a buzzkill for the story, Mikey's anger at the table likely came from paranoia and fear rather than frustration. He was scared that Lee would out his addiction (he alluded to it but didn't say the exact words), so that exchange wasn't Mikey putting the annoying uncle in his place, but an addict doing everything they could to belittle, undercut, and intimidate so that if Lee ever did say the words out loud then he could discredit him. (apologies for the mess of thoughts without much nuance)

Joy

I'm with Mason. Claire is a distraction and is a little too thirsty. If a guy gave me a fake number I would think that means he's not that into me and move on..not chase his friends down to get his real number. It's desperate. Carmen needs to focus on getting his restaurant together and getting his mental health together before trying to start a relationship. Meanwhile Syd is left high and dry while he's going out on dates.

Knightmare

She's manic girl dreamy and everything, but she's also been crushing on him for 10 years. I feel like she can wait 5 more until the restaurant issue is solved. 😂 Carmy is basically a million dollars in debt at this point. Seems like he's self-sabotaging.

Lauren

Man, I feel exhausted after watching episode 6.

Cassandra

Also in girls. Mimi rose and Desi also would have went crazy together
