MANGIA, BABY!

Jeff K.

FORKS! Yes! The episode where it becomes clear that Richie is unquestionably the heart of this show. (Sorry, all love to Marcus and Tina and Syd, but Richie is the beating heart).

Cristy

It's a shame you guys didn't recognise Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Chef Terry, I was squealing when she came on screen. When Ebon (Richie) won his Emmy he thanked her and Taylor Swift, lol.

Jeff K.

I remember when I first saw this episode, obviously everyone was talking about Fishes and all of the big guest stars; then this one rolls around and it’s like, “Oh and by the way, we also have Oscar winner Olivia Colman too” as an extra little flex.

The restaurant where Richie staged is an actual restaurant in Chicago called Ever. A number of the extras who appeared in this episode are actual employees of the real restaurant, like the female server who was telling the guests about the hamachi (as far as I know she was the only Ever staffer to have any lines). The chef that came out to yell at the staff was wearing a chef's jacket with Ever's logo on it (he's an actor, not an actual chef). The real Ever has never been ranked the best restaurant in the world, but it does have two Michelin stars, so it's still pretty prestigious. Only five restaurants in Chicago have two or more Michelin stars - Ever, Oriole, Alinea, Kasama, and Smyth. Smyth is the only one with three stars currently (Alinea had three stars for many years but just lost one very recently). The restaurant Sydney had the egg and hash brown sandwich at when Carmy stood her up in Ep3 (Kasama) just won its second star, and it's the only Filipino restaurant in the country with Michelin stars. Anyway, dinner for two at the real Ever will set you back well over $1,000 with wine pairings ($325/person for tasting menu + $195-345/person for wine pairing), so you can understand the complete shock the teacher couple that had been saving up to eat there must have felt when they had their meal comped.

to comment on "Forks" episode, I used to work in a boutique hotel, and while I was not part of a kitchen team, the teamwork and responsibility level was insane. We were a 4 stars luxury hotel, and while we did not have many rooms, we always made it our goal to make people's experience memorable. The things I had to do: get very specific flowers for someone's anniversary, go to the other side of the city for a specific type of chocolate, or alcohol, or to make a reservation in an always fully booked restaurant etc. It is always very hard and exhausting, but the emotions you get from actually making someone's day or making someone remember their visit to my favorite city and such a beautiful hotel, always made it worthwhile, I would never change it for anything.

The scene where Richie is driving listening to Taylor Swift had a callback to S1 - in some of the aerial footage of Chicago, the camera zooms by the faceless Ceres statue on top of the Chicago Board of Trade building.

forks is the greatest episode of the bear hands down

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

S02E07 - Forks: So that "fork" theme has continued 😉 I think Fishes and Forks are paired as the top two episodes of the series, and really up in the very top of any collection of the best episodes of television ever. Re: are there restaurants like this - yes, lots of them. Nearly every 3-Michelin-starred restaurant is like this (actually more intense - it would be ridiculous to try to put all of the intensity of a 3-Michelin-star restaurant into a tv episode). You guys didn't recognize BAFTA- and Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman as Chef Terry! I think she's one of the finest living actresses we have - and also really really funny as a person. We're going to have to recommend some of her stuff for you! My rec for TV would be "Broadchurch" (spectacular series from ITV), and for movies would be "The Favourite" (she won Best Actress for it). She was also just in a movie called "The Roses" with Benedict Cumberbatch which was a remake of "The War of the Roses" from back in the 80s with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the lead roles. S02E08 - Bolognese: The song at the end is "Throw Your Arms Around Me" by Australian rock band Hunters & Collectors. It's originally from 1984 - the version in the episode is a Pearl Jam cover from 1995 (yup, Pearl Jam, not just Eddie 😉)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

100% Richie is the heart of The Bear (both the restaurant and the show). And to think how much I disliked him when the show premiered - kind of the way MQ wanted Tina fired! 😂

Cristy

As an Aussie, I love that they included this song. This version is awesome too. Next episode has my favourite Australian song though, can't wait!

Violet

I'm not a Taylor Swift fan but I absolutely love that they included that love story song of hers in the forks episode because the episode is a love story about Richie falling back in love with what he does!

BigMajor

I miss the boys talking about good writing on shows and then burst out "IF THE WRITERS OF FEAR THE WALKING DEAD..." but I agree, these last 2 episodes are peak. Amazing reactions boys 🐻

Jeff K.

Ok now that I have Forks out of my system… I’ve always loved the fact that Fak gets his hero moment in 1x8, as the guy who figures out why the fire suppression isn’t working. It’s Neil Jeff’s time to shine baby.

DTGstl314

Jimmy didn't bump the opening by much - they were scheduled to open in two weeks, and he moved it up by 4 days.

ias

I think everyone who had already watched The Bear was waiting for you guys to get to Fishes and Forks. I can't even describe how I felt watching this for the first time. These episodes are so good. After Forks I came to appreciate Richie so much more. He's so real, love him so much. And I love the message of Every Second Counts and of the episode overall, it's never too late to start again again. This show is amazing in every way, my absolutely favorite along side with Succession.

Kare

2x07 Forks is my fave episode of the entire show. So well done. And we get Olivia as part of it!

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Diamond Dave being nervous for Richie—not gonna lie, I was having the saame feeling but my guy Richie can do no wrong in my eyes when it comes to connecting with people. I love that Diamond Dave is so proud of Richie.🤘😂

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

2x7 man There are so many things in this episode that just blow my mind. This show rocks. No wonder it won an Emmy. 🤘❤

Ste Rawlings

I don't mean to be hyperbolic, but Forks and Richie's arc this season helped me to understand myself better and allowed me to change my life more than I could ever explain.

DTGstl314

This show is fantastic with the cameos. And yes, there are more to come (they'll really appreciate a particular one in S3).

Mo

Love this crew of people so much. Richie telling Syd that she has Carmy & Nat now too. I love that.

Ste Rawlings

The thing with Richie changing so much after only a week of working at the other place is that it does seem absurd at first, but when you really think about it, the only thing he needed to change was his perspective. He was always good with people, and he has shown signs throughout the show of caring about small details, such as when he warned the nerds about littering in the first episode of the show. All he needed was a reason to care about things.

Jeff K.

I get you there. It didn't happen for me with this show, but I've had a similar change within myself from a TV show viewing (Ted Lasso; some of the stuff in there genuinely impacted me in enormous ways).

DTGstl314

It's kind of nuts that in the entire United States, there are only 14 restaurants with 3 Michelin stars - 5 in New York City, 3 in San Francisco, 3 in Southern California, 2 in California wine country, and 1 in Chicago (there used to be two but one of them just lost a star).

Ste Rawlings

When you really think about Ted Lasso and The Bear there are a lot of similarities between the two shows.

Esther K

I love how you're all enjoying this series. Once I saw this in your Patreon lineup on YT, I ran over here and paid my membership fee. Money well spent.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Yes but we do have five restaurants that have two or more Michelin stars in Chicago, and a total of twenty starred restaurants (plus more on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list). Remember, Syd wants a star - just one. In the entire United States, there are 217 with one star, 33 with two stars, and 14 with three stars. Out of the entire country. One Michelin star is huge.

LilithCain

Regarding Taylor Swift... In the show "The Magicians" (s1ep4) they had their own actors sing the lyrics to "Shake it Off" ... off-key, with some light piano, but no other music, for just over a minute... and it cost $50,000.

DTGstl314

Yes, when Luca (Will Poulter) was telling Marcus the story of working with a chef who was much, much faster than him, he was referring to Carmy.

Lauren

Your love language discussion was on point. It’s exactly why my marriage failed. My love language is quality time, but my husband’s was acts of service. He would do things for the house (wash the car, etc.), but never spent time with me. We were not speaking the same language.

DTGstl314

Richie is not meant to be fried. He is meant to be sautéed.

Julie

Every second counts. This reminds me why I love rewatching shows cos everytime i do the lessons stick more and more. To me 'every second counts' means making the most of every moment. It means enjoying and appreciating whatever that moment brings. So even if i'm having a slow day or month I should appreciate it and not dwell on the fact that i'm not busier, or if i'm in a period of loneliness i shouldn't dwell on it cos it won't last forever. Life is full of alot of different moments and you won't know what type of moment it is until your looking back at it. So make sure, whatever it is, to take it in fully and live in it, live in the present.

Tatyana M

Wow, I love this take. I didn't even think of that. I thought it was like a small callback to when he told his daughter he loves TS but just needed a break, lol.
