I absolutely loved this episode. Rhea is obviously always great on her own, but I thoroughly enjoy when they let her play around with a fun character like Diabate. They bounce off of one another well. And of course, I can't wait to see you guys pop when you see a certain person randomly show up in this episode (not saying who in the comments to avoid spoiling it for people who haven't watched yet).

Simon

I knew the guys would lose it at John Cena lol

Douglas Kelley

Had to delete my comment, forgot yall are a episode behind 😬

Douglas Kelley

What I don’t understand is they won’t eat animal meat that had already been processed but they will eat/drink dead people

Jeff K.

I think that's explained by Diabate, in that they technically said that they just prefer to be vegetarians. I took at as an indication that they'll consume already dead animals (processed as part of their "milk" concoction), they just won't kill them.

Jeff K.

I couldn't help but notice the exact phrasing in certain interactions with the "others" in this one, especially when Carol noted that apparently lawyers survived given the lawyer-speak surrounding how they never said they were vegetarians, they just preferred it. Vince and his writers don't just introduce things for no reason. And based on that, combined with the specific wording of, "We will not take any stem cells from your body," that feels very deliberate. Especially when you consider they introduced the fact that Carol has frozen eggs somewhere out there. Pure speculation, but it sure feels like all of the above was introduced and phrased in very certain and specific ways for a reason. I've watched episode 7 and it was also terrific, and I can't wait to see what happens in the last two episodes of the season. I'll be curious to see if my suspicions (and in fairness, it's become a pretty common fan theory, I certainly didn't invent it) pop up before the end of this season or if they're gonna sit on that particular Chekov's gun until season two or beyond.

Crispy

I guess it's because those people died from " natural causes" and the pluribus didn't physically harm or kill the them intentionally, but if you ask me when I'm driving a car and the pluribus makes me black out and have a seizure and I crash and die, then I still consider that killing me but since it wasn't " intentional" they consider it a natural death. Yeah... The pluribus's moral compass if fkd up if you ask me lol

DKMT Show

Remembers guys in the first episode, Carol said that she put her eggs up in storage so she can have kids with her girlfriend later on. That might come back to haunt Carol.

Crispy

They got better call Saul advising the pluribus lol

I agree with Diamond Dave, that radio frequency is going to mean something. It could be how the hive mind is communicating or something. I felt for Carol here, so few people in the world and still they don't want her around, ouch!

Jeff K.

Also one thing to keep in mind, with regard to some of the discussion at the end with how we don't know what these people were doing before all of this: Diabate is from Mauritania, which is a pretty poor country, in general. So based on the numbers, he's probably part of the population of his home country who was living either near or below the poverty line. Which both explains why he's so willing to go along AND why he's going over the top with the extravagance, because he's experiencing something that was never available to him before the hive mind came to Earth.

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Really? So it really was bodies. Well, bummer. I don't know why I thought it was going to be something more unique and different. 😒😂

Jaylennn

hopefully we still get wake up dead man todayyy

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Also he and Carol were the only two of the unjoined who appear to have no family members of any kind.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I'm pretty sure the lawyer thing was a joke about that careful phrasing - of course lawyers "survived" - everyone who is still around "survived" as part of the Joined, including lawyers. It's in the same vein as Carol's remark in episode 2 about how all of the marketers' brains in the world were now joined and that was the best term they could come up with.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Hilariously, they couldn't tell John Cena what he was filming - they gave him very little context, rented a small studio in Florida for a few hours, and filmed. Cena said "I can't wait to find out what the hell I just said."

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Re: why he's at The Westgate - in episode 2, Diabaté told Carol he'd be at the Westgate because he wanted to stay in Elvis Presley's suite, as he heard that his ghost haunts it, and that interested him.

Jeff K.

Absolutely. Given the fact that this whole thing started with a frequency being beamed to Earth, there's a 0.0% chance that the one mysterious frequency Manousos stumbled across isn't somehow going to be hugely important.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I hoped it would be something unique too, but I think the approach they're taking with it makes it just different enough that I'm good with it.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Honestly I'm expecting a race between Carol and Zosia to the fertility clinic as the end and/or cliffhanger for s1. For whatever reason the Joined don't know about it yet, so I'm hoping Carol realizes it before they do.

Karina Alarcon

I guess she doesn't ask for a shorter message because that's the only "human" voice she has contact with; she feels lonely, but she's too stubborn to accept it.

Jeff K.

Oh damn! That's where I've seen the actor who plays Diabate; he was in Our Flag Means Death. Fantastic show.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

One of the most painful cancelations ever - they had a three-season plan. Fucking HBO Max or whatever they go by now. I loved OFMD so much. And honestly when I learned Samba was going to be in this, it was as much of a selling point to me as it being a Vince Gilligan show.

Jeff K.

Thanks for sharing that interview with him - I already really enjoyed the character, but reading that made me love Diabate even more.

Jeff K.

This is one instance where I'm okay with them holding off since my wife is making me wait until later tonight to watch it with her... haha. The audacity!

Jeff K.

My question about that, though, is this: does the consent thing extend to the eggs? Like, they still belong to Carol, and Carol is still very much alive, so... would the Joined need to ask Carol permission to access them? Or will it perhaps be a case - and I realize I am at the point of rambling but this literally just popped into my head - where they were submitted to whatever clinic they're being held under the names of both Carol AND Helen, so because Helen was briefly part of the collective, maybe that's how they work their way around needing Carol's consent? (Apologies, I don't know how any sort of fertility clinic, IVF, and anything in that realm works since I've never gone through that myself, so I don't know whether they could theoretically even be something Helen's "Joined" self would have the ability to give away, essentially.) I said in a different comment that I 100% think these are Chekov's frozen eggs, but that one point is still nagging at me, because I feel like Vince and his writers are too smart to leave that bit of murkiness just sitting there.

JBK405

I was one of the ones saying that it WOULDN'T be people after the last episode, so I guess we can finally mark me down as Officially Wrong on one point so far. I was absolutely FASCINATED by the opening poker game in Vegas. Just what exactly is Diabaté getting out of this experience? He can't lose, so we know he's not getting the "thrill" of victory or surprise. He's not spending this money, so winning the pot does not grant him resources. Is this experience like when you watch a movie you've seen before, able to enjoy it even though you know the outcome? Is it a specific fantasy he's had his whole life, and he enjoys it just as a fulfillment of his wishes? Doe he enjoy it as a manifestation of his power, getting a buzz just from watching them all cater to his whims no matter what form that takes? I could write for HOURS about that sequence. The ending of the episode with Manousos and his mother was PERFECT. “You’re not my mother. My mother’s a bitch.” Because now his world is full of forced, artificial niceness and it's just not real. In real life, some people are assholes. Maybe they became assholes after their life experiences, or maybe they've always been an asshole for no reason at all. That's not good or bad, it's just what IS. And Manousos is right here saying it. His mother is a bitch, and that’s how he knows the thing puppeting her body isn’t her. Mason Quinn I am FLABBERGASTED that you knew about the Darién Gap off the top of your head. Even I didn't think of it until I began to trace his route after I watched the episode. I've only seen one other person think of that immediately after seeing this episode. The theory I've seen regarding the "vote" on excluding Carol is that the two "let her in" votes were from Xiu Mei and Otgonbayar, who were from China and Mongolia (We saw them at the meeting). Xiu Mei objected to the way the Hivemind freed all the animals and refused to give up her pet dog, and Otgonbayar defended Carol about causing the worldwide seizures by pointing out she didn't know what was happening. So much less hostile than the ones who love the way the world is and were attacking Carol.

Jeff K.

Hard same on the Darien Gap. I'll be fully honest here, I'd never heard of it before reading some comments on last week's episode. (I'll go ahead and blame the school system for very clearly not doing enough for me in world geography.) It's interesting you mention the idea of puppeting people's bodies. That exact thing popped into my head watching along with the guys (this was my second time watching the episode after viewing it last week when it came out). I've been trying to wrap my brain around how much, if any, retention there is within the shells of these people, and I think I've landed on, "none." Or I should rephrase. It's not "retention" because the Joined know and retain everything. But I don't think there's anything left of the people who were previously in those bodies. Like, I don't see how there can be, given the collective is controlling every single human being, there is zero individuality, and so on. Like if Mason Quinn was suddenly brought into the hive mind, he'd look like Mason Quinn, he'd have Mason Quinn's memories and experiences, but the entity at the wheel is absolutely NOT Mason Quinn. It's a full-on Body Snatchers scenario. And yeah, it seemed pretty obvious that it would be human remains that Carol had found, which was a little disappointing initially. But the way they subverted it, I thought, was fantastic, by making it so that they weren't actually hiding anything, and were doing it for, on the surface, very pragmatic reasons.

Jeff K.

Plus, who WOULDN'T want to just listen to Patrick Fabian's dulcet tones?

Jeff K.

John Cena was in this? Where? Weird. I didn't even see him! (someone had to do it)

Reem

Something I’m wondering is whether they still reproduce and have babies? They mentioned 100,000 people die every day but are there more being born? I realize that yes, anyone who was pregnant will probably give birth, but do they continue reproducing? And also, are the babies that are born automatically part of the hive mind from the virus being passed on through the placenta? Or are they like Carol and have yet to be “infected”?

Knightmare

Reproduction was the first question I had in episode 1. Carol is crazy as hell for never asking about these things LOL

Knightmare

This show is too awesome

Ronns G.

So, it just occurred to me (I don't know if other people thought of this as well), but the term the Others have repeated in the previous episodes saying "it's their biological imperative" to do the "joining" or basically invasion of consciousness of other planets and perhaps, species, is literally because they cannot survive because they cannot actively kill or hunt for the sustenance of their temporary host - as what the episode revealed. This suggests that they have conquered other planets/species/galaxies for their continuous survival. Knowing it is a virus actually makes sense because a virus cannot survive without a living host. The RNA virus signal came from outer space, so it must have been other “joined” species that have projected it for other planets with intelligent species to decode (smart, to be honest). The point I am getting at is that what they’re doing is not an invasion of a planet for resources or whatnot. The concept of what they're doing as good or evil does not even matter. It literally is just a biological survival instinct. And because the human species, as their host now will eventually go extinct, they would probably use our technology to invade other planets with intelligent species, hence repeating the process. Biological imperative indeed!

SushiBoy

on one of the random episodes i mentioned how I would have asked for a Lamborghini dude has 1 Huracan for each day hahahahahaha

Aubrey

I have so many questions and thoughts. If they can't harm animals or plants, eventually those things are going to take over. Does that also mean that they can't harm other viruses? Like if there is a pandemic, can they treat the infected? Can they process those infections out of bodies before they turn them into juice boxes? How much HDP do they get from each body, because 300 calories per pint, isn't much when you're talking about 7B people. Sure, they're okay now, but those resources become quickly tapped, especially if they can't procreate. I'm also curious if their sentience is limited to the planet or if it is their entire species, because I would think that even as they die out from planet to planet, as long as there is someone to receive their space signal, they never truly die. So how long have they existed and wouldn't they have already solved the food thing? And none of that even scratches the surface that there is no more free thought. Their literal existence is just to exist, but to what end? There are no new challenges, no hobbies, no real connections, no real joy. It's all just super gross and bleak.

Aria Isara

What's interesting is that the hive mind said they were not aware of aliens so it seems it doesn't cross species. The aliens sending the signals were not homo sapiens. Similarly the infected rat is I'm assuming not part of the hive mind because it's another species? I'm wondering if the rat infected other rats on purpose though 😅

Ronns G.

Yeah, good question. The rat might be in the hive mind as well... And I do think it crosses species because the infection was from the rat first, crossing to that human scientist as I recall in the first episode. It has been revealed *SPOILER AHEAD* that other beings in the HIVE mind on Kepler-22 did project the signal, but they also said that they were not in contact with them anymore. So now I'm wondering, are the intelligent lifeforms on Kepler-22 all dead? Or is it a matter of distance?
