RIP Rob Reiner :( I'm pretty certain The Bear was the final acting credit of his life. At least the last TV acting credit, anyway.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

In a way, I'm envious of you guys - the rest of us are never going to get anything new from Rob Reiner, but we knew you were going to get this. As sad of a surprise as it is, you got just a little more Rob Reiner than you thought you would, and for that, I think it's a happy thing.

Cristy

Who's cutting onions? Rob Reiner turned down the role of Albert Schur initially but Jamie Lee Curtis convinced him to come onboard and I'm SO glad she did.

Lolapie

I still don't like Claire with Carmy, she doesn't bring the magic for me. I'm all for a Carmy and Sidney romance, she calms him just like the posh food.

Lolapie

Shout out to Rob🤩

Jeff K.

I love hopeless romantic Oak getting pissed at Quinn’s trolling during that whole Carmy/Claire scene in 4x3. Fantastic.

Four is my fave Sydney episode of the whole show. This episode was actually written by Ayo Edebiri (Syd) and Lionel Boyce (Marcus). While editing the footage that had been shot for this season, Chris Storer contacted Ayo, told her there was room in the season for a Sydney-centric episode and asked her if she wanted to write it. It was her idea to have Lionel as a co-writer and they asked Corey Hendrix (Gary) for input too because he is a Chicago native.

val ‹𝟹

agreed, they're definitely not setting them up as a romance though especially if the next season is the last but i like to imagine my own slow burn in my own head lol

Jeff K.

Man, Ayo is such a fucking powerhouse. She’s just amazing.

I loved 4x4; it brings back memories of when i was younger, getting my hair done at a family member's house. 😂

I do think that there is a deeper, more symbolic reason why the clock flashes 12:00, possibly signifying that Syd is just marking time by theoretically moving forward at BOTH restaurants and not feeling confident in either choice for different reasons. But it could also be one of many small references to Black culture that are laced into the episode, like the amount of microaggressions in the scenes with Shapiro

Rewatching this show from season 1 episode 1 with you guys have been great im so ready for season t whenever it comes .

on 4x3 -- i have lot of opinipns about carmy and claire. i think their conversation was really necessary for him to apologize and say he loves her (my opinion is he does not love her) and to get closure but that was a very "this is over" conversation for me when she said "i hope you're okay" it felt like "we're done". its going to be awkward but we can work our way back to being friends. i don't think claire is good for carmy and carmy is good for claire. since she was close with his family she is sort of a reminder of his trauama (he had a panic attack equating her with his trauma in 2x9 and carmy is kind of a walking red flag (like quinn said) for claire and she doesn't need that either. while i admit they look good and there is so much love there, i think she entered into his life at the worst time possible and he was distracted enough to lose his relationship to the restaurant and his relationship to cooking, she may as well have been one of the reasons-- like sugar said "you don't love it anymore" --- so he might be taking a a step back to focus on his mental health (imo partly to do with claire). carmy needs some peace in his life and that cannot be found with someone who is in connection with his familial trauma and loss of his brother and his self-loathing issues. i won't touch how in depth i think he would be a better version of himself with sydney (the main reason being she provides peace for him) but i have reason to beleive they have been really really slowly slowburning sydney and carmy finding each other...but im not sure if its actually going to happen, but it would be really interesting how its done.

Jijireacts!

also one more thing: re on 'running for love' i think carmy was running out of his guilt more so, he was deserpate to see claire and talk to her it wasn't just about confessing his love to her because she didn't actually accept it from him at all, she accepted his apology. she did not accept his love for her when he said it. i persoanlly ahve run to someone to apologize more often than i have run for love so you can do a big gesture like that for both apologies/guilt and love as well :)

Has Oak seen the meme going around with Arnold Schwarzenegger singing “Somebody I Used To Know”? If not, someone should show it to him. Lol.

DTGstl314

And this episode isn't the last they'll see of him this season, but I'll just leave it at that. When I said last week that Ebra's storyline in S4 would pull at their heartstrings, it's because I knew they were going to get to see the great Rob Reiner one last time. A very fitting swan song, even though it quite tragically wasn't supposed to be.

DTGstl314

With regard to 4x4, it's important to know that Ayo Edebiri (Syd) and Lionel Boyce (Marcus) co-wrote the episode, an episode which was called by another group of reactors I follow, "Black as hell". They definitely meant that in a good way - the episode felt to them like a very authentic representation of Black culture on a show whose cast is mostly white. The way Shapiro was acting towards Syd was supposed to represent a well-meaning white dude who is desperately trying to convince Syd what a great ally he is, but it winds up being (I presume unintentionally) super cringey. He's blasting the rap music when she comes to his restaurant space because he just assumed that's what she would want to listen to (it was hilarious when she switched it to Beethoven and then he mistakenly referred to it as Mozart). He makes a weird comment about "bringing in some of those Afro-Caribbean influences" because he just assumed that would be her specialty, and he told her it would be totally fine with him if she hired other Black people for her kitchen staff. When she was talking to him on the phone at the beginning of the episode about having a hair appointment, he didn't understand that a hair appointment for a Black woman is often an all day affair. And when she called him after her hair appointment at the end of the episode and he asked her if she had ever seen "Good Hair", it was like he just desperately wanted her to know that he's learning about Black culture. That he's woke and gets it. He was just trying way, way too hard. A good comparison to Shapiro's behavior is when the character Dean Armitage (Rose's father) in the movie Get Out tells Chris (Rose's Black boyfriend), "By the way, I would have voted for Obama for a third term if I could." Although in that case he was doing it because he was a racist POS who was trying to convince Chris that he was an ally. I don't think Shapiro's a racist POS, I just think he's a weirdo who worries too much about trying to prove that he isn't racist. The blinking clock on the stovetop had no real significance, but the reactors I mentioned earlier (yes, they're Black) laughed and thought it was a completely relatable thing to see in a Black home.

DTGstl314

I am quite certain it was the latter - a different group of reactors I follow (who are Black) laughed and said it was totally relatable. I don't think it really had any deeper significance than that.

I'm kind of surprised the guys didn't catch the microaggression flowing out of Shapiro like honey in 4x4. It really grossed me out. That along with the fact that he wasn't present for the Ever funeral are huge red flags for me. I also kind of feel like Syd would get bored at a place that specializes in wood-fired pizzas? She's wildly talented and that seems like a waste of her gifts. I agree with Dave that the small office seems super problematic. How much of this guy is legit and how much is manipulation and charisma? Another comment referred to it as love bombing and that feels accurate. I think I might be the only one who hated the conversation between Claire and Carmy in 4x3. It didn't strike me as a romantic gesture. Instead, I felt like it was pretty selfish and signaling that he's still not ready. It was 01:07 and he woke up the entire household. She's an ER doctor in Chicago, and she told him she'd had a bad night and didn't want to do this right now. He didn't even ask her if she was okay? Instead he bumbles around with crap like "I don't know why I'm here" and "I don't know if it was real." You had two months of ghosting her to figure it out, slick, and this is what you HAD to tell her right now? Hell, he didn't even say sorry until she uncapped her feelings, he got overwhelmed, and he shouted it to placate her. I'm not even sure he was apologizing for his actual actions. If I'm Claire, that's it for me. Until he deals with his trauma and shame, she will always have to cap herself and defer to his feelings. What further solidified the selfish thing for me was that he then called Pete, whose name he hasn't bothered to fix in his phone, after 1 AM. They're new parents?! Wtf are you doing?? He doesn't apologize, doesn't ask how Sugar and the baby are, just tells Pete to shut up and that he wants to make contractual changes. Because apparently it couldn't wait til daylight? Nah, screw that guy. I loved that 4x3 was called "Scallop." Scallops are a symbol of rebirth and multiple paths uniting as one--perfect for this episode. I also thought Mason Quinn was on to something when he said that the episode was about guilt and passion, except that I think regret might be a better word. I feel like guilt is an unresolved feeling of shame while regret is the thing left in its wake once we make peace with it. Carmy feels guilt over Claire, Richie feels regret over Tiff (who needs to stop calling him like he's her bestie btw). I feel like we've seen numerous characters resolve their guilt and find their passion, but it still eludes Carmy because he's too scared to move away from it. He knows how to deal with hatred, self-loathing, and shame. Love, as he said, is much scarier. Rob Reiner's character says that the single most important thing is finding your own passion if you're going to be your own boss. Maybe Carmy needs to take a beat or 70 and do that.

Long ago it was kind of a joke that so many people couldn't set the clock on their VCR. There was a commercial for something I don't remember, but in it there were a bunch of kids teasing another kid about his dad and they went "What time is it in your house, Billy? TWELVE O'CLOCK! TWELVE O'CLOCK! TWELVE O'CLOCK!" and it always cracked me up!

DTGstl314

Shapiro was at the Ever funeral, you see him several times. He was working in the kitchen, and he had a chat with Syd in the wine storage room asking her if she was still interested in the job offer. He's the one who took the "Every Second Counts" sign down near the end of the episode and handed it to Chef Terry before everybody left to hang out at Syd's apartment after Chef Terry said, "C'mon, let's get the fuck out of here." But you are right about all the weird patronizing shit he was saying to Syd (eg "bring in some of those Afro-Caribbean influences").

Aubrey

You're totally right--my mistake. I do remember all of that now that you mention it. I was a wee bit cranky yesterday, and it totally shows lol. He did give me the ick big time in this episode though!

Eboe Thrasher

I would never want to see Carmy with Syd. Gotta keep some things platonic on sows, they can just respect each other and be friends without pushing them together romantically. I think a lot of people would be disappointed if they did end up together because it would feel formulaic.

Eboe Thrasher

they had better not bring those two together, it would be so predictable and tropy.

So Tired

Loved loved loved ep 4. Definitely one of my favorite episodes of this show.

DTGstl314

When Oak said, "She's probably going to get a coat" when Carmy went to see Claire and she went back inside for a moment, it made me realize this show is not always great at conveying what time of year it is. Anyway, 4x3 takes place in August 2023, so it would have been a little weird for her to get a coat. But they're both dressed like it's cold outside.

Tatyana M

Funny enough, we didn't often have the blinking stove or microwave growing up because it would bug my mom, and she would definitely set it (she set my microwave when she stayed with me for like two weeks last year, lmao). But if it's left up to me in my house, it's gon blink because I already have a phone, a TV, a computer, AND a clock for the time, lol. As for the significance of the blinking time, two things can be true at once. It can be both a cultural reference AND symbolic of something considering they cut to it a few times. A clock is usually shown repeatedly to show the passing of time, but this clock is not set, so there is likely some meaning to it being shown a few times. If it was JUST a cultural reference, there would be no need to single it out. It would be like an Easter egg. So I agree with the significance of it being a juxtaposition to the other clocks/timers and "every second counts" of her professional life.

MarisoL

Ep. 3 I'm probably in the minority similar to Mason Quinn, I wouldn't mind if the Carm & Claire shipped sailed. I feel like she brings good but also too much of his past which is negative. It's not their time atm. Ep.4 Shapiro might be a little too naive or optimistic about his restaurant. Could be a little too good to be true. Gosh it's a risk no matter what.

DTGstl314

Now that I think about it more, I can definitely see how the repeated focus on the clock could have possibly been alluding to Sydney being stuck in her decision about whether to stay with The Bear or to jump ship and take Shapiro's offer.

Tatyana M

Ooh, nice. That's a cool interpretation, too.

Enn Emm

As soon as Syd started taking her hair down and told him she had an appt and he questioned her about how long it was gonna take (knowing braids is an all day affair), I immediately knew he was gonna be on some bs.
