I hated Sydney’s response like you say you want Carmy to get better but for him to do that he needs to step away you just want him to stay so she’s being hella selfish. I love Carmy and Richie’s talk they finally got it all out and he understood

Season 4 episode 9? Ooooh grab your tissues Oak it’s an emotional one

DTGstl314

It's worth noting that when S4 was released, the show had not yet been renewed for a fifth season, and it wasn't completely clear if the season finale was in fact the series finale. Thankfully, the renewal came a few weeks later, so those of us who watched it in real time didn't get left hanging in suspense for too long. I do have a feeling that S5 will likely be the last, though nothing has been confirmed in that regard.

Ste Rawlings

Look, I know we don't really know you guys or what is going on for you in your lives, but it seemed like something was hitting really close to home for Oak here, and I hope everything is ok, mate.

DTGstl314

Knowing how S4 wrapped up, it seemed almost certain that we were going to get more of Rob Reiner in S5, and I'm sure that Chris Storer was planning to have him back. When the news of his murder came out, it was a little heartbreaking to realize we weren't going to get to see Albert's mentorship of Ebra continue next season. I'm not sure how they'll ultimately address that, but I'm quite sure we're going to get an episode that is dedicated to him in the credits.

Jeff K.

I think Carmy is totally justified to walk away, and it’s more than just him quitting or running away, as MQ kinda suggested/interpreted it. Look at what food and restaurants have done to Carmy’s family. He’s realized how toxic and bad for his mental health the business has become and he needs to leave in order to save himself. Cooking and the restaurant have kind of been an addiction for him for years, and it’s sending him down a path of stress and anxiety and bad habits that might put him in an early grave, and he’s trying to head that off at the pass.

fatoumata cisse

Yeah I understand she was pretty angry and was lashing out but it is pretty selfish to tell him he has to stay, even though he’s leaving to get better.

DTGstl314

Carmy's decision was foreshadowed by his phone conversation with Natalie at the beginning of the season where she told him that it was truly OK if he didn't love being a chef anymore. The reason we didn't get an extended conversation between her and Carmy in the finale like we got with him and Syd and Richie is because she completely understood why he was stepping aside without needing to have it explained, and she was crying happy tears because all she wants for him is for him to take care of himself.

C. J. Ramirez

That’s when her character went downhill for me cause you can’t Make him stay

DTGstl314

Every season gets dropped in full at once, and every season has been released in the last week of June. The show is produced by FX, but it's released exclusively on Hulu before it airs on FX. Disney owns both FX (acquired when they bought Fox) and Hulu.

Ste Rawlings

If you think back to episode 1 of the show, Nat never wanted Carmy to be back in the beef because she knew it was bad for him. I knew as soon as she came out she was gonna be happy for him straight away.

Bárbara Pereira

I'm glad you guys understand the complexity of all the characters and didn't hop up the Syd hate train, this was refreshing! They are all portrayed as human and flawed, yet Sydney often receives harsh criticism and little understanding from viewers. The discussion section after every episode was so worth listening, thank you for sharing your perspectives and personal life experiences through this season.

4x9: What a stunner of an episode. Jamie Lee Curtis just owns every second she's on screen. Oak - my heart goes out to you. I have issues with both of my parents that are as big as we see on the screen -- as big as I imagine you are living with as well. It's a terrible place to be in as an adult child. DD - I'm with you -- I think that's probably the first time Donna ever ate anything that Carmy made, and I would have loved to see her reaction to tasting the food. But then again, we already know what it would be. Food & Wine doesn't give out Michelin stars - only Michelin can do that.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I can see it from her side - she's terrified of being left on her own with the restaurant. She ran a business once and she ran it into the ground. She came here *for Carmy*. For her, his departure is like her being pushed off of a boat into the ocean and being asked to learn to swim. I don't think it's selfish so much as self-preservation. AND she moves past it by the end of the episode. I don't think that makes her a bad person.

C. J. Ramirez

Does she move past it I don’t think she does

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I think when she changes the agreement to make Richie part-owner, she has understood and moved past it.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

"That’s when her character went downhill for me" It was 33 minutes in real time. She was on the defensive after being hit in the face with a brick. It feels a little harsh to say her character "went downhill".

So Tired

That’s definitely a low blow to say that her character is going downhill. In no disrespect, how can you be so close minded? She isn't being selfish. In fact, it’s Carmy, even though he has no intention of being that way. But he is. How are you going to take your name out and put hers in just so you can leave to focus on yourself? From Sydney's perspective, that is hella selfish. And again, he's been doing this since previous seasons dumping major stuff. on her because he believes she can handle it all by herself, without even communicating with her at all. I already know you don't like Syd, but let's make something clear, she's not fake nor is she annoying.

sarina

i watched both of these episodes last night to watch them again with you all today. 4x9 is such an important episode for so many people on the show, but also as viewers. it has some of the best performances i’ve ever seen on television. and for 4x10, i loved this season finale. i personally think the season will be carmy getting the team out of debt and set them up for success (probably with Ebra’s ideas) and say goodbye at the end of the season

Lauren

I think the season finale was definitely a “full circle” moment. Great character development. So I think it was brilliant.

Lauren

Exactly. You gotta take care of yourself before you can take care of others - it’s the putting on your oxygen mask first analogy. In order to be a better boss, a better coworker, or a better person, he needs to take a step back and find himself.

C. J. Ramirez

Carmy is not being selfish wanting to leave to improve his mental health that’s more important than staying at a restaurant for her

Cristy

I just wanted to reach into the screen and give Oak a big hug 🫶🏻 The power of episode 9, I tell you. Between JLC's monologue and Rob Reiner being Rob Reiner shout out to Chester for the much needed comic relief.

Heidi Louise

I just wanted a hug Oak during DD’s monologue. One of the best acting scenes I’ve ever seen on television. Jamie Lee Curtis knocked it out of the park. As a child of alcoholics, I breakdown every time I rewatch.

Cristy

Episode 10 has such a stage play feeling. I was surprised they went in the direction they did on first watch but it just makes so much sense. Carmy and Syd and Carmy and Richie have needed to have these discussions for so long so it's fitting the episode only really involved them. As soon as Nat said that it was okay if he didn't love it anymore I thought that's where it might be headed and in therapy Carmy said he went to New York to become a chef to show Mikey. He doesn't need to do that anymore and I'm glad he's taking a step back, for his mental health more than anything. Can't wait to watch season 5 with you, these reactions have been a treat and I love how much you've embraced my fave show.

random guy 317

Man I'm going to miss the bear reactions on Tuesdays

random guy 317

I'm confused at masons view point. mason carmey wanted to open a restaurant with Mikey. Carmey didn't want to open a restaurant after his brother committed suicide you keep saying mikey believed in him sure by did Mikey think about how his death would effect everyone?

random guy 317

It was foreshadowed all season especially with the phone call with sugar.

C. J. Ramirez

Rewatch the phone call with nat earlier in the season with carm . It’s obvious he was thinking of leaving

AllyBoo124

I love this show and I have so many words, but all I’m gonna say is I love you guys and I love this show and I love that y’all love this show too. One of the best shows ever made truly.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I agree with you -- Mikey wanted Carmy to be happy. He thought opening a restaurant would make Carmy happy. It didn't, so now Carmy's going to try to find a way to happiness. That is exactly what Mikey would have wanted.

DTGstl314

I agree with this take 100%. She specifically conditioned her staying on Richie being made a partner alongside her and Nat, because she knows how valuable he is to the restaurant. It's gonna be interesting to see how those three run the place next season. Also can't wait to see Ebra's expansion plans for The Beef stand come to fruition.

DTGstl314

Even Jimmy recognized that in his conversation with Syd (Carm's unreliability as a partner), when he said he was surprised she hadn't left the place yet.

Aubrey

Big hugs to both of our Daves. I'm so appreciative of the entire crew's willingness to share their stories and emotions. I love that Carmy has found the courage to leave. There's a terrible, beautiful freedom to walking away from something you thought you'd always want that doesn't serve you anymore, and it's okay to do that. I think his time with Donna hints that it won't be forever. It meant something to him to cook her that meal, and he was interested in the pasta dish she had in Italy. I suspect that he will find his center exploring various art forms which will eventually lead him back to his passion for food. I could see him coming back as a stage like Luca or even becoming a teacher/mentor of sorts. While his leadership has left much to be desired, he is SO good at identifying talent and giving it a place to blossom. In a lot of ways, he's given to his friends the love and support he couldn't give to himself. Have faith, Quinn--our boy will figure it all out in the end!
