Magnussen gives me vibes of a certain individual dominating the news at the moment. A wealthy, powerful magnate, who knows all the dirty secrets of other people in power...🤔

I loved season 3! Season 4 is such a rough watch for me I almost feel bad about the guys having to put up with it. For me personally it’s such a step down compared to the previous seasons. Even compared to their weakest season. It’ll never make sense how the people that wrote seasons 1-3 are the same ones that wrote season 4 lol

BeckyB00b

Honestly, don’t even bother with series 4. We’ll do if you want, but massively lower your expectations. And then lower them some more. And again.

mai

Are you going to be doing The Abominable Bride? It's a standalone episode that continues from this finale

Lauren

1. Mary is a real character in th books, but she wasn’t an assassin. They were really clever making that twist on the show. 2.Magnussun definitely is a villain in the books. 3. Did you notice the butler from The Parent Trap at the end? 4. I just love how series 3 sprinkled so many clues to this finale throughout the show. Such clever writing. 5. Sherlock’s pressure point being John is so wholesome, and I love how the villain has a mind palace like Sherlock.

Answer FYI - the special episode is neither the fourth episode in S3 nor the first episode in S4 - it's quite literally a special episode. 😉

gen

….. yup. Sadly this is pretty accurate. I almost wish they could just leave the series here hahahaha let them finish the show with high spirits and a good opinion 🤣

BeckyB00b

I know. Normally if I’m committed to a show, I don’t even mind too much if the last series is sub par, because I’ve enjoyed the journey. But I’ve never even done a rewatch of the last series because it annoyed me too much how bad it was.

Lauren

Yeah, I definitely feel like Season 4 was disappointing compared to Season 3, particularly with regard to Watson’s character. It’s a little painful to watch. There ARE good elements, but not enough to justify the season.

Levy

Season 3 definitely still holds up and watching it now again with you guys for the first time in over 10 years feels like the first time with more mature eyes. Fun fact: Magnussen is played by Lars Mikkelsen, Mads Mikkelsen's older brother. Both really great at playing untouchable villians. Im a little nervous about season 4 because I remember being let down by some of the contrived premise of so many plot lines but I guess we'll see.

Ye could be that bbc iplayer also shows the special ep as the 4th ep in series 3 (so that what i had also mentioned to them) it’s probably as it’s a slight link between the last ep of series 3 and first ep of series 4😊

As usual, an excellent reaction! Watson's wife, Mary Morstan, in Conan Doyle's stories, was not a secret agent or a killer. She was Holmes' client when she came to ask for help in the case - this is the novel The Sign of the Four. Many details from this novel are used in the series - the bottle with poisonous and non-poisonous pills, the cabman who gave it to certain people, Major Sholto, the dwarf with poisonous spikes, the treasures of Agra. The novel is very interesting. Watson fell in love with Mary and married her after the case was solved. In the novel The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, Holmes and Watson break into the blackmailer Milverton's house to steal the letters he is using to blackmail Holmes' client, but it is not Holmes who kills him, but his client. And Sherlock, in the novel, courted Milverton's maid in order to find out how to get into his house, posing as a tinsmith. Another interesting detail is that Jeanine talked about Sussex and bees in the hospital. It was in Sussex that Holmes lived when he retired, and he kept bees.

Season 3 episode 3 aired in January 2014. The special aired in January 2016. Season 4 premiered January 2017. It's a standalone special. Even though it includes moments at the beginning and the end that "link" the two seasons, a viewer could skip it and not miss anything of importance for either season 😉

Yeahhh so i'm going to really need a Trainspotting reaction - if the guys besides Quinn haven't seen it! Pleaasseee.

Wraijth

You missed the extra little scene at the end of the credits.

Bella H

Team, please do not watch the special after season 4. It canonically sits between season 3 and season 4

Been a long time since I’ve watched this episode. That Mary reveal was pretty damn epic. Totally didn’t see it coming at all. The next episode the abominable bride is also great, really cool seeing the actors in the traditional Victorian setting of Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately season 4 is…not great. I haven’t rewatched it since it originally aired so I’m nervous to rewatch it with you guys but I’m curious to see if I dislike it as much now as i did then…generally I consider this season to be the last of the series lol.

AJ

Been looking forward for this episode. Martin freeman gives an A+ class in acting. He was sooo good. H quickly became my favorite actor ever since this episode.

Alex

You guys gotta watch The Abominable Bride first before Season 4!!!

Come visit the UK Quinn! you'll see PLENTY of beautiful architecture of brick houses (even mine is made of bricks) SO MANY twists & turns they took us on in this finale episode! especially with all our main characters, didn't expect THAT about Mary! & that whole scene of Sherlock after being shot was incredibly done, the visuals/camera work/dialogue was magnificent! & your reactions to everything here was gold!. The comedic/serious dramatic dialogue for the whole episode was superb! what a shocking twist from start to finish!. Also a BIG smile spread across my face when I heard Sherlock's "Dragon Slayer" line & Quinn's reaction to it hehe & yay for the 'Heat' film reference in your post review too, a spectacular way to end S3!.

MoyashiMei

I have been loving to rewatch this series with you guys, can't wait for the reaction of the special episode. Fun fact: Sherlock's parents in the show are Benedict's actual parents. Also, Mary's actress (Amanda Abbington) was Martin Freeman's wife at the time of the show's airing

Jeff K.

Totally agree. It was so disappointing that I don't ever want them to try to do a new season, because season four made me lose my faith in them being able to continue on with the show. I genuinely remember, like... one single element of season four, at this point?

Colleen Scott

Yes, It’s in the same vein as the Christmas specials for Doctor Who. Loved those!

Ashley

One thing I caught on rewatch is Sherlock got the idea to date Jeanine from the photographer in episode 2. And I like season 4. It’s hard to end shows but I think they did an okay job.
