It always feels weird watching movies I've been showing at school, this one I had seen in high school. I fell in love with this one. This is in my top three of Robin Williams films.

Kaley

One of my favorite films! So, so many messages. And Robin’s character of mentorship and the messages/anecdotes me a lot of Ted Lasso!

Emily G

Oh gosh I really miss Robin Williams! Another fantastic film of his is What Dreams May Come (1998) you guys should definitely react to it. It’s on the website if anybody wants to give it a like! 👍 ❤️

Gem

we did a unit on walt whitman in my english class in high school and to end it our teacher said we would be watching this movie. half of us were inconsolable by the end of it. going to a conservative private school with parental pressure a lot of us deeply related to neil and his relationship with his father. and it brought me to tears again but even more so when todd is crying saying that neil never would’ve left them because neil was the only one who ever truly saw him or he felt cared about him since his parents obviously didn’t. i also love artistically and symbolically that neil did it in his father’s office. but i’m crying all over again this movie is so good.

AllyBoo124

i think this movie shows with todd and neil what emotional abuse and neglect from parents can affect kids. neil does everything his dad says and excels, even in the beginning of the movie his dad won’t even let him work on the yearbook when he’s the EDITOR. imagine how hard he worked the year before to get the position of editor for the yearbook, of course you hope and believe that parents always have their children’s best interests at heart, but with neil’s dad we see how he overlooks his son as an individual with hopes and his own dreams and passions and only wants him to do what he deems as “great” so that whatever he sacrificed for his son will be worth it. he didn’t make those sacrifices because he wanted his son to be able to follow his own dreams but so that his son could be successful in his eyes and he makes it very clear. it’s also seeing how different neil is in front of dad vs when he’s with friends. he’s outgoing, confident, a leader, and an amazing friend and his dad knows nothing about that.

AllyBoo124

when christmas rolls around you should watch the holdovers!!!

AllyBoo124

i made a comment about how i watched this movie in a class in high school already but that was before i heard all of the discussion, all to say my class was the same age as those characters and to not count kids today out, and like i said in my previous comment a lot of us were living our own version of this movie at my school so it really hit home. many of these parental relationships are still good and alive today for better or worse. and y’all are my favorite reaction uncles!!

luca

answer’s look to the camera when quinn said “he’s gonna be yelling at someone”…💔

Y'ALL get your comfort blanket and tissues!!

I went to a catholic, private all-girls school. To say I related to Neil and Todd would be an understatement. I also wrote poetry, especially in high school but I started when I was eight. This has been my favorite movie since I saw it at 17, over 10 years ago. I remember watching it on Netflix, crying my eyes out, and ever since I only watch it like maybe once a year just because it wrecks me terribly. It doesn't help that I always saw Neil as such a terribly sad character, the moment he lies to Mr. Keating about talking to his dad, I knew he was gonna have a sad ending, and yet, I still cry every single time. I was on break from work (luckily I WFH) and I just logged back into work with swollen eyes and a red nose LMAO.

Spoiler 🥲

This will forever be one of my favorite films. As someone who went to an all girls private catholic school, Neil and Todd are all too relatable.

I had an English teacher just like Mr. Keating my senior year in high school. He truly wanted us to think for ourselves, and was genuinely interested in what his students had to say. We dedicated our yearbook to him and gave him the teacher of the year award. I still stay in contact with him and his family. I tell him often that he had a powerful influence on my life, and that I could never thank him enough! I graduated in 1992... 3 years after this movie came out. I will always think about my English teacher every time I see it! The end scene was also powerful after the passing of Robin Williams. He was unmatched in his talent and ability. I hope he knew how much he was loved and respected by his peers and his fans. I just wish he could've seen us all standing on our desks for him.

AllyBoo124

omg same here, private catholic school and then private christian school all my life in the south. i loved and love acting but no one ever took my passion for it seriously. i cried so much and swore i wouldn’t watch it again lol, this was my first time since the first time i saw it. neil is one of my beautifully tragic characters that i love

patricia jimjimcherie

I feel you!! I always say I won't watch it again, but I just love suffering LMAO

I always thought Maya Hawke looked sooooo much more like Uma than Ethan, and then I re-watched this for the first time seeing she was on Stranger things and I was struck by how much she looks like her dad at the same age.

I never really had a teacher like Mr. Keating. I had plenty I really liked but none who impacted me like this. I’m not a teacher, but I do work at a college with students day to day (in the world of athletics). It’s invigorating to know you’re making an impact. Like a couple years ago when the mom of my student intern came up to me at the end of the year and thanked me for watching over her daughter for three years, and then that student telling me that she considered me to be part of her family (she’s crushing it these days, by the way; couldn’t be more proud). It’s so incredibly rewarding.

This was one of those movies they forced us to watch during English class and we all thought it was going to be boring, only for it to be so raw and relatable. One of those movies you never forget.

Lauren

I think you guys should react to “Jack” with Robin Williams. It doesn’t get enough credit.

T Kay

My bff and I watched this and School Ties frequently. Both very good movies.

Lauren

I bet the guys weren’t expecting the Walt Whitman Breaking Bad and Dead Poet’s Society crossover! Haha

GEMsMama

WDMC is my all time favorite movie. It’s been so hard to watch since Robin passed. But honestly one of the most visually stunning things I ever seen.

Emily G

It’s in my top 5 of all time too! I couldn’t watch it for a few years after he passed. He is the only celebrity’s passing that I’ve ever cried over. Such a beautiful film, both story, and visually.

I went to an all girls college prep school that was incredibly academically rigorous and strict like this. You would get kicked out for having less than an “A” gpa. It wasn’t a boarding school but it was pretty suffocating at times. I really only had time to sleep and do homework. So middle school and high school were not fun for me. I can relate to the boys on that level. So I felt like I couldn’t chose what I truly wanted to do, I even went to a college I didn’t want to go to for a degree I wasn’t passionate about. But I did have at least one English/history teacher that was like Mr.Keating. She was really one of the reasons I didn’t completely hate my time at that school.

Shayna Toso

Never seen this movie but it was on my watch list for years. Who better to watch with then these Viscounts and Lords here. Hehe

Katie

Robin Williams was such a treat. One of the saddest celeb deaths. It’s so bittersweet watching his films. This movie is incredible. One of the few movies I give a 5 to. I’m a harsh rater like DD 😂 My letterbox has rarely any 5s

A classic! Directed by one of the greats in Peter Weir - a fellow Aussie - who did other masterpieces such as Master and Commander, Witness, The Truman Show, The Way Back, Gallipoli, among others. The movie was a launching pad of so many careers - some more successful than others, with Ethan Hawke standing out by a wide margin. A tale of profound intellect with a simple message at its core - do you want to be a number in a queue or a leader of one? It all seemed so inviting and exciting and comfortable for the better part of the story but you knew - or at least I did - that a low hanging blow was coming and boy did it hurt. Deftly handed, maturely depicted. Robin Williams for all his comedic, goofy performances had the great ability to make himself appear as an all knowing, wise figure - and also a calculated, cold, psycho in his portrayal in One Hour Photo - which just goes to showcase his skill as one of the most versatile actors of his time. 4.3 Answers

I wore out this VHS tape back in the day. I had the opposite reaction to Kurtwood Smith after this movie. Everything I saw him in, I hated him on sight. On sight!

MarisoL

Ah it had been a minute since a Breaking Bad mention 😊 I didn't know what what to expect from this film, wow!
