Yay! I love this movie Mara (Matilda) was nervous about dancing so the whole crew danced behind the scenes to make her more comfortable Unfortunately her mom had cancer , thankfully she was able to see it before she passed. Danny and his wife took care of Mara for a while acting as her guardians.

Chosos Wife

I was addicted to this growing up

Emily Barron

This movie has always been my favorite and it’s so good

Plebcy

lets gooo

I'm Batman

One of my all-time favorite adaptations, and funny you bring up the Dursley's in here since the actress who plays Miss Trenchbull is the same person who plays Vernon's sister, the one Harry blew up in Prisoner Of Azkaban. She is undoubtedly my favorite villain in any movie, my unbridled hatred I had on her as a kid is unmatched. Instant classic with insane rewatchability. I do wonder how I'd view this movie if I had watched it as a fully grown adult like y'all. Anyways, this is obviously a 5/5 for me.

fuyutyun

this has always been in my top 4 favorite movies of all time, especially growing up. my mom claimed that at one point i knew every word in the movie lol. super excited to see your reactions!

CeeEl

As a kid, my dad lied to me saying that I'll develop telekinesis if I read a lot of books like Matilda (to get me to read more books) and I actually believed him 😅 I would practice moving things with my mind after every book I finished 🤡🤡🤡 Anyway, that's how I developed my love for books 😅

Chosos Wife

I used to be terrified of the chokey growing up Also loads of places sell their own version of the Bruce Bogtrotter Chocolate Cake and it's delicious 🤣

Jo

Anyone else hear something buzzing in the background?

Shelby

Oak did you catch that Ms. Truchbull was Harry Potter's Aunt Marge (the one he blew up and flew away)?

Anthony Velasquez

Now that you seen the original hopefully you guys check out Matilda: The Musical I believe its on Netflix

Chosos Wife

I quote so many Trunchball things regularly 🤣 WHY ARE ALL THESE WOMEN MARRIED and I like a joke as much as the next fat person 🤣🤣and Piss Worm 🪱

Miya

Not y'all dropping a reaction to one of my favorite childhood movies and books on my birthday! Excited to curl up after a great day and watch this. 🥰

Ashley S

I adore this movie!

Josh Minke

i recommend watching A Simple Wish. stars Mara Wilson, same actress that plays Matilda, really fun movie

Luna

Great reaction guys ! Love this movie. Such an inspiring & fun film for a little girl (or anyone) growing up during the 90’s. Another beloved 90’s classic that I hope the guys consider reacting to is 1995’s “A Little Princess”. I guarantee it would make you guys feel something lol.

Kyra Brown

yessss I love this movie so much such a classic ❤️❤️

Brandon Reacts

The irony of Answer saying to Oak ‘and you thought Harry’s aunt and uncle were bad’ MISS TRUNCHBALL IS AUNT MARGE!!! 🤣

StaySaneInsideInsanity

PLEASE watch the musical! The songs are so damn good, and they change the story quite a bit so I think it'd be a fun watch!

FD

I loved this movie as a kid but I think I forgot 80% of it

enyo96

This book and Charlie and chocolate factory were my favorite Roald Dahl books growing up. Although the scene with the child eating the chocolate cake was too much for me as a kid LOL I wanted to throw up just watching it. It's a very sweet, fun movie. Everybody should be like Ms. Honey!! The sweetest, most kindest, and loveable character.

Sam

Oak with the GoT reference as miss trunchbull is getting pelted with cake went so under the radar!!😂😂 SHAME!!

Kimberley

This is my comfort movie

I'm Batman

"Much too good for children" was one I used heavily. Mainly whenever I had sweets lol.

Chosos Wife

I use that too with my siblings 🤣

MadBone127

I love this film. My childhood home was much like Matilda's (but worse) and I too disappeared into books to survive so this book really resonated with me when I was young. I still love it as an adult.

Crispy

still have this recorded on VHS somewhere :) Miss Trunchbull went from terrorizing schools to terrorizing Harry Potters House lmao

Crispy

Bro I was screaming at my screen XD

Cody Book

This movie was great. Trunchbull was Aunt Marge in Prisoner of Azkaban and Danny was an amazing human being. Mara wilson who played the main Matilda her mom had cancer and while she was in the hospital and doing treatments Danny and his wife who also played Mrs wormwood watched over her and she stayed at their house. And she was going to pass before the movie was going to be finished so Danny got a copy of the film so Mara's mom could see the movie before she passed.

Karina Alarcon

Mason Quinn's joke about Seven 😭 I almost choked when he mentioned Brad and Morgan... I can't

Aria Isara

First time watch for me, I thought this was awesome!! 😄 Very funny and I like that they pushed the envelope. I love the idea of a kids' movie taking the piss at idiocracy and showing children teaching a lesson to shitty adults lol. When I was in 1st grade I had a mean teacher, she made kids cry in class, she was a real bully. About 2 weeks after the start of the school year she punished me because I had dropped my ruler and she claimed I "did it on purpose". She told me to stay alone in the hallway outside the classroom and that I wouldn't get recess time. I knew it was unfair so once I was alone in the hallway I thought "this isn't prison I don't have to stay" so I crawled on all 4 fours so she wouldn't see me go past the glass door, then I quickly ran away from school and went to my grandma who lived less than 1 km away 😅 The disbelief on her face when I arrived at her place 😂 At some point the teachers realized I had disappeared lol it was a mess. They kept calling home but my parents and grandparents purposely didn't take the call to let them marinate 🤣🤣 At the end of the day we went to school to get my stuff left there. The headmistress told my mother "your daughter is crazy"... a lovely woman too that one 💀 Anyway I support movies telling kids to disrespect shitty adults 😁 (The teacher hated me even more after, and she was my teacher for 1st AND 2nd grade 😩, she made me sit at the back of the classroom away from everybody else and mostly ignored me 🙄)

Lauren

Roald Dahl makes books that give children power when they feel powerless by abusive, cruel, or corrupt adults. I love the idea that reading opened up Matilda’s powers and gave her strength to fight back. These types of stories are important for children who might have actual abusive or neglectful parents. You guys should watch James and the Giant Peach - the aunts in that movie are pretty terrible, too.

Lana23x

All of Roald Dahls books are crazy and dark like this😭 Charlie and the chocolate factory, james and the giant peach, the BFG, the witches, etc., all of which have been turned into movies. He often takes heavy subject matters that some kids might relate to, like poverty and abuse/neglect and makes them palatable for kids. But rereading them and rewatching these movies as an adult will have you so disturbed lol. The Witches lowkey traumatized me as a child but Matilda is very beloved and nostalgic for me. What a classic

Jo

Matilda was my superhero growing up. This was my favorite movie as a kid. I still love it. It's a 10/10 for me. I used to act out the scene where she makes all the objects move around the living room. My mom would run around the room picking up the objects I pointed at and moving them around in the air while I pretended I did it all with my mind lol. This movie also made me love school and reading and libraries.

Miya

Aw Oak, you have such a big heart! I promise you, most of us knew as kids that what was happening in the movie was messed up even if we didn't fully understand the different forms of abuse depicted. As someone who grew up reading Roald Dahl, kids being treated poorly by adults only to gain agency, get back at those adults, and ultimately have a happy ending was a common theme in his stories (see: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The Witches which Roald Dahl also wrote). In a lot of ways, this movie was powerful for kids who felt maligned and neglected by adults. "Kids movies" don't always have to be lighthearted, feel-good stories. There can be some darkness and depth to them, especially when we consider what some kids go through. I think Danny Devito did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. So glad you all gave it a watch! :)

Jo

yes! I suggested this on their website and am hoping it gets more votes!

Jo

Now you guys must absolutely react to A Little Princess (1995).

Valeria

The Bruce! Bruce! Bruce! Bruce! chant is a classic. I still do it with my friends to jokingly motivate each other 🤣

Cee

New lore for The Answer unlocked. Walking across the highway at 5 years old 😂 Also, Oak, to answer your question I was born in 95 and I thought I watched this movie a lot and knew it front to back but in retrospect I mostly just caught it when it was on cable and I don’t think I ever watched it in one sitting. Just segments over time and pieced it together. Of course everyone knows the classic scenes. For as many times as I’ve seen it, I NEVER picked up on Ms. Honey’s dad being posed as taking himself out. That was a new tidbit for me, and you’re right it was so wild hearing a supposed 6 year old talk about it with her teacher so casually 😂😂

Cee

I only very recently watched seven for the first time so this was extra hilarious for me

LadyReignOfDreams

I am SO glad I was alive in the 90s! Lol while yes Oak these movies were out of this world in today's time, I truly am glad I grew up with these movies haha. Also like others I'm sure have said, Ms. Trunchball was the mean aunt in Harry Potter as well that Harry sent to the sky puffed up LOL. Great reaction!

Miya

Omg I legit cackled!! That was so freaking funny! 😂

hails

this one made my day!!

Crispy

I literally never noticed till I was an adult that danny was the narrator lol

Crispy

family friendly version of carrey lol

Annie519

All of Roald Dahl books are very dark and so are his adaptions. I'd say this is one of the more tamed ones to me. If you want dark then check out The Witches, now that gets pretty crazy. This is definitely a Danny Devito film, he has a certain style. He tends to use a lot of close up shots, unique angles and are quite dark. And I will say, I never understood either why he was the father and the narrator. Maybe he was worried that children would be afraid of him, so he wanted to make sure that something was good with him in it, but again that is just a theory. Pam Ferris did such a good job, she looked like she was having a blast. She was so funny and yet terrifying at the same time. I commend actors/actress for playing such roles in kids films because they honestly will most likely always be associated with that character and children might always be scared of them too. It might also even be difficult to find other roles because of it. But for this and others I think it was worth it. And I actually love that she's constantly destroying the house, because it shows that she didn't value it at all. Another thing I love about the movie is it really feels like you’re seeing the film through Matilda and the other kid’s perspective, that’s why DeVito’s style of directing really works here. So, a very sad but sweet thing about the making of this movie is Mara Wilson's mother passed away from breast cancer before production was complete, at the very end of the credits they dedicated the film to her. But, during that difficult time Danny and Rhea Pearlman, who were married would often let her stay at their home and keep her entertained while her father was working and her mother was in the hospital receiving cancer treatments and he also made sure she was comfortable during shooting and very sensitive to her. They pretty much became second parents to her, Mara has spoken very highly of him and Rhea. And that just makes me love this film and Danny even more. I think this also calls for a Wedding Singer reaction since it doesn't sound like Mason or Answer has seen it. It's in my opinion one of Adam's best films.

Alba

I LOVED this growing up, I used to watch it all the time. I can confidently say I didn't completely understand how fucked everything was but understood enough. Still love it nowadays, maybe even more

MHC_18_H

I just hope theres a little chance for a reaction to the musical after watching this one 😔 Matilda The Musical is sooo good but has so few reactions 😭

Shayna Toso

Love this, so excited to watch this with you guys.

Emily Blackie

Librarian here. I can't even begin to explain the reality of "Matilda". I've been actively involved helping brilliant children like this who have families like this. Its heart breaking, but to see their potential and their unique gifts flourish because of reading is a gift I will never take for granted.

LeeLeeS

This, A Little Princess, and My Girl were my fave movies growing up. While some of the movies i grew up on were wild, i like that writers respected we could handle a little more. A movie id like to see someone revisit is Rover Dangerfield.

Kacie

Well this was hilarious! 😂 loved this movie growing up!

Karissa M

I loved this movie growing up, and after this rewatch, still very much do! This will always be a classic for me. While I didn't fully realize how messed up the themes in this movie were, I still had very strong reactions to Matilda's parents and of course, Ms. Trunchbull (she still freaks me out to this day, lol). And while I may not have experienced anything as bad as Matilda, I do remember feeling some sort of relatability to her character, being an only child and also a bit of an introvert. I spent a lot of time in my head and having to find ways to keep myself entertained, and even though it forced me to be more independent, it could be lonely at times. Matilda's powers may have been a complete fantasy, but seeing her come into her own, harnessing her strengths, making friends outside of her little bubble, etc was actually quite inspiring for me as a kid.

Dhiannie Brito

That watch next pop up of The Lorax is the closest I’ll get to a reaction😪😪😪

Emmy

I wanted to be Matilda when I was a kid. 😂 I swear so many of us tried to move things with our minds because of this movie. Also, the whole scene where Ms. Honey and Matilda are hiding from Trunchbull was absolutely terrifying as a kid, it genuinely felt like watching a horror movie.

Megan the Librarian

We used to have moveable shelves in the staff area of my library that we called The Chokey! (I presume because you could theoretically crush someone in there.) 😂 We still use that as a password/code word for things sometimes, even though The Chokey is no longer there. You really should check out the musical version on Netflix! It's different enough and the music is great. As silly and over the top as this story is, I think the message, teaching children to stand up to abuse and not just take it, is an important one. Luckily, I did not need to learn that lesson when I was a kid in the 90s!

Anni

I read the book as a kid and then saw the movie and I loved both enormously. My mom is Norwegian and Dahl was half-Norwegian so the themes and how the storylines of his works never seemed strange to me. My mom was never phased by the books and her only criticisms for the movies was that they were loud and more American than the books. I’m really glad you checked this one out!

Jo

Growing up, this movie felt so inspiring to me. I got to see a similarly quiet and polite girl my age stand up for those around her, cheer on strangers when no one else was, choose books and learning over TV, be praised for wanting to do well by people who mattered, and refuse to back down when she knew that the adults were in the wrong. Plus, she was this way even BEFORE she learned about her powers. She was the first one to cheer on Bruce before she even realized what she was capable of. That made an impact on me. The themes in this are dark, yes, but I do think it is full of positive messages that are important for kids to learn and be exposed to young. For instance, when Matilda is asking to be adopted and her mom makes that comment about Matilda being her only daughter, Matilda doesn't even blink. She doesn't second guess her decision, and the choice to say goodbye to her family is a HAPPY one. Kids need to see that too. They need to know that when people treat you like the Wormwoods treated her, you don't have to stay with them out of guilt or just because you share blood. In addition, it also shows that a loving family can be CHOSEN.

Megan

I love this movie and it's funny now because I just realized this and Kindergarten Cop often made "movie day" in school! I didn't fully understand the "murdered Honey's dad, stole her money and home, and abused her (broke her wrist as a 7 yo)" plotline as a kid. I always remembered Matilda's parents being awful more. One of the reasons I loved this movie was because I loved Miss Honey and was so happy her and Matilda got to be a family. Also a couple facts: Danny and Rhea (the parents) are married in real life, which made their interactions even more funny. Mara's mother was dying from cancer, and unfortunately passed before the movie premiered. During that time, Danny and Rhea took care of Mara throughout the filming, both on and off set. Danny even showed her mom the rough uncut version of the film so she could see it before she passed. Learning that they took care of Mara made it hard for me to pretend they were awful in the movie.

Luna

Thank you for the recommendation ! I definitely gave it an “Acknowledged ☝🏽” vote lol. I hope it can get more votes soon ^_^

Dominique

I knew you guys would have fun with this one 😂 As someone who watched it growing up and could watch it now as an adult I still think its good for what it is. I think its fun and we should honestly have more fun/unique movies like this. This film just reminds me that I miss having family movies instead of strict categories of kids movies and explicit adult films there used to be a better blend of family movies like this that is entertaining to all ages.

Angela 🌺

I forgot how much this gives me Drop Dead Fred vibes.

Crystal

Roald Dahl was one of my fave authors to read in elementary school. We gotta get them to react to James and the Giant Peach, BFG, the Witches and Fantastic Mr. Fox!

Rae

One of my absolute favorite childhood movies!! So happy you all reacted to this!

mimi ྀིྀིྀིྀིྀི

Saw this as a kid and I still rewatch it every once in a while (still such a comfort film for me lol). I'm 19 now. I always resonated with Matilda with her love for books and knowledge, which is a big reason why I love the movie. I'll admit I always hated the scene of Trunchbull forcing the boy to eat chocolate cake - it made me uncomfortable as a kid and still makes me uncomfortable now, I have no idea why but it's just such a hard watch! I loved your reactions to this movie!!

Lisa - Marie

I would love for you to react to more Roald Dahl films I already have Witches (OG one) on recommendations on site but BFG and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Also the Matilda Musical film would be a funny watch some point too. Matilda's actress, Mara's mother whilst filming was dying in hospital so Danny Devito and then wife Rhea Perlman looked after Mara and even showed the mother the finished film prior to release so could see it before she passed

MadBone127

I would love them to react to Witches, although it's even darker than Matilda. Poor Oak might actually lose it :D

Lisa - Marie

Be fun though. The new one isn't as dark but the og is iconic

Maria

that was a really fun re-watch. I think I only watched it once as a kid, so I didn’t remember a lot of it. I really enjoyed this. ah, 90’s family movies were so great. 😆

Avery

So is the matilda musical next? 😉

DustinEatWorld

This reaction from you guys was absolutely glorious. A similar kind of humor to The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and this reaction honestly ranks among your best. This type of movie suits you perfectly, and you can really tell how much fun you were having with it. The film is very typical of 90s movies — unintentionally hilarious, unhinged, and pretty ridiculous. But not necessarily bad. It was incredibly entertaining.

Trina Key

I really hope we will also get Matilda the musical.

Javier Padilla

i'm fully serious why i say Pam Ferris as Trunchbull should be an award winning performance. Her ability to portay humor, filth, horror with an element of camp that doesn't break away from the other characters is absolutly amazing. A master class and one of my favourite pieces of acting. Also it's hard to recognize her but she also plays Aunt Marge in Harry Potter 3

Javier Padilla

An honorable fact in this fact is that Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman where amazingly nice to the kids during fiming, specially to Mara Willson (Matilda) as her mother was very ill and sadly passed away during filming. Mara has since spoken about how Danny and Rhea where crucial for her in her mourning. And they even continue to check up on her and acompany her after filmming The dancing scene with everything floating was the first scene they filmed after her mother's passing. Danny knowing how hard it was for her made every crewmate dance with her behind the camera. This really helped Mara find joy in those times and enjoy makeing the film.

Iris

I had this movie on VHS when I was a kid and rewatched it SO MANY TIMES 😂 I use to play pretend that I had Matilda’s powers. Still just as fun watching it as an adult.

XOXO808

And they didn’t even know either lol

Sonia

I hope you get to watch The witches, but please! the old one, not the new version... And James and the giant peach it's really awesome too, one of my favorite chilhood movies, along with Macaulay Culkin's The pagemaster. There are some kinda dark children's movies that we all loved!

Urmommasucksadamdriverstoes

Omg this was THE movie growing up! I had this practically burned into the tv screen haha

VariantsWatchMovies

I had never seen this movie. I was mid 20's when it came out, so definitely not the target audience. I enjoyed this way more than I expected to. Oak's question on "I wonder what our parents thought" question got me thinking. One of the interesting things about film is how much our reaction to it depends on the generation and cultural lens we bring with us. As the crew talked about how dark it is for a kids movie, I was thinking my parents probably wouldn’t have blinked an eye at it when I was a kid. Not because they were neglectful or insensitive, but because for a lot of us growing up in the 70s and 80s, “kids movies” weren’t really separated into this carefully protected category the way they are now. We watched family movies, sure, but we also watched whatever our parents were watching. I remember going to drive-ins where the second feature absolutely was not a kids movie. I saw Watership Down as a child because adults saw “animated rabbits” and assumed it was for kids. We watched movies that were funny, scary, sad, weird, or emotionally intense, and nobody seemed particularly alarmed by that. So when I look at Matilda, Miss Trunchbull feels exaggerated and cartoonishly monstrous, not disturbing in some deeply realistic way. Especially because many of us had already seen films with much darker or more grounded themes long before that. I think maybe our generation just had a different relationship with discomfort in storytelling. Dark moments in films weren’t necessarily viewed as harmful, they were just part of stories. And as kids, maybe we processed them differently than adults thought we did. It’s fascinating that the exact same movie can feel charmingly dark to one generation and surprisingly intense to another.

emma rose

this movie was my childhood! and oak is right this is def one of those movies i watch back as an adult and go yesh this is more intense than i remember (especially as an education major😅)

Kyle

The boy bruce oak was trying to think what else he is in, he was on the wedding singer. Not sire if he firgured it out later.

Miya

This movie is SO quotable! The “why are all these women married” line makes me laugh so hard. It’s such a random thing to take issue with. 😂 I wonder if she improvised that line.

Miya

Yes! I recommended it awhile back. It’s on the recommendations list on their website if anyone wants to upvote it!

Logical Dreamer

I hope you guys will check out the Netflix Matilda. It's based on the Broadway show, so it's a musical, and the music is so good.

Iben Frederiksen

The movie I have perhaps seen the most amount of times in my life. I grew up with this, so I just think it's sweet and funny, but of course I can look at it with different eyes. The most horrific line to me is Miss Trunchbull telling Miss. Honey that she can break her arm again :O

Lou_Lou

I watched this growing up as a kid many times. Watching this as an adult still hits the same. You know, as a kid, the difference between right and wrong, and that her parents were terrible to her. That is the point of these types of stories. While they are entertaining, they also have good messages. The movie shows you that even when you feel hopeless or are in bad situations, you can take back some of your power. At least that's what I got out of it. Also, I grew up on Roald Dahl books like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory","The BFG", " George's Marvellous Medicine", "James and the Giant Peach", " The Magic Finger", etc. These books opened up new worlds and most definitely didn't coddle the reader. Kids can handel more than we give them credit for and it's through these types of stories.

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

Your reaction to the hammer throw at 27:55 was priceless! “What the fuck?” is the right question, Oak 😂😂😂 But I love how he was absolutely losing it laughing by the end of that scene. And Oak almost choking on his soda while chuckling at 47:51 😂😂😂 (and then again at 1:23:21!) 42:01 — “This movie is utterly fucked.” — I can definitely see that as an adult, but honestly I LOVED it as a child and rewatched it a couple of times! And answering Oak question by the end — I still enjoys it a lot, especially rewatching it in your company! I tried to count how many times Oak said this movie was fucked up, and it was at least five 😂 It definitely left a deep impression on him! I love how by the end he said, “It’s the best thing we’ve ever watched on this channel,” and genuinely admired this masterpiece! P.S. I never realized just how many different insults Principal Trunchbull throws around to the kids!

Marie RammGirl

I've read the book & watched the movie so many times as a child, had the movie on VHS, to address Oak, I was 12 years old when this movie came out, loved it then & now love it even more as an adult cause of all your reactions to it made it extra special 😊 LOVED reactions of Quinn/Answer laughing & Oak in (amused) disbelief throughout this movie, Amanda being thrown by her hair, Bruce's Chocolate cake I was eagerly awaiting your reactions to & you exceeded my expectations, as they were absolute gold! the look on your faces too made me burst out in loud laughter 😂 great that we got Oak nearly spilling his drink over Trunchball's dialogue hehe, also a big smile filled with joy that Quinn also knows 'Wind In The Willows' another childhood favourite Book/Movie of mine (hope it's done for the channel in future) Harry's "Chew your food, you're animal" always made my brother laugh & would say it anytime someone choked on their drink/food. Pam Ferris crushed this role, surprised ya guys didn't recognise her from Harry Potter as Aunt Marge, also her role in a show called 'Darling Buds of May' you'll see she's a warm, caring Mother character, totally opposite to Miss Trunchball, ya cant imagine it's the same actress haha. SO HAPPY YOU REACTED TO THIS & even more glad that you guys enjoyed it so much! 😊❤️

Sarah✨️

Matilda is just as great as an adult as when I was a kid. Every kid wanted to be Matilda. Every kid wanted to stand up to adults or anyone who was abusive, and to have magical powers. How cool is that! I read books because Matilda read books. She was magical and amazing as a kid. And I love the over-dramatic comedy in the film.

Hailey

I loved this movie as a kid, and I still love it today! Of course, some things are crazy, but since it was done so goofy and dramatically, it makes the movie so fun lol
