Quinn, it was fairly obvious that it was present day at the end lol

I interpreted it as Mikey was jealous of how happy and carefree Richie is. Something he felt like could never be Which is why he blew up on him at the end.

It's crazy to think of just how long Mikey was stuck in an extremely dark place prior to taking his own life. For perspective, this episode takes place sometime around February 2019, about two months after the Fishes episode (December 24, 2018), which we know based on Tiff's pregnancy being near term and Eva's age in the present. So Mikey was already in a seriously messed up place a full three years before he actually killed himself (February 2022). The way Mikey's demeanor turns in that final scene in the bar where he goes from heaping praise on Richie and saying how proud he is of him to telling Richie he's going to be a horrible father and he should just abandon his unborn daughter was just disturbing. I was kind of surprised that Richie didn't beat the absolute shit out of him, because that was some seriously messed up shit that Mikey was saying. Like when Syd was baiting Richie in that scene in the Review episode in the first season telling him his daughter was probably ashamed of him - this was so, so much worse, because it was coming from Richie's best friend in the world. You could tell when they were driving home that Mikey knew he really fucked up and felt guilty about it, and that Richie was really hurt and didn't want to say a word to him. As for the rampant speculation online that Richie was killed in that car accident... I don't buy that for a second. Richie's car got hit on the passenger side, which wouldn't have been nearly as bad as if he had gotten rammed into on the driver's side. I think he'll probably be pretty banged up and I'm sure it will play a big part in the final season, but no way they killed off Richie. Anyway, just 50 days to wait until the final 8 episodes are released on Hulu next month (yes, the final season is only 8 episodes long, which is a bummer).

DTGstl314

Richie talks about this road trip twice before this episode - the first time we hear about it is in S3E7 "Legacy", when he's sitting in the restaurant dining room before service with Sugar, who is just about to have her baby. She's asking him how it was for him on the day Eva was born, and then he tells her the story about taking a trip with Mikey for Jimmy the night before and how Tiff was pissed at him for getting home late. The day after this episode took place, Richie made sure to be home for Tiff all day and they went and got Thai food to try to induce her labor. The second time he talked about the trip was in last season's finale in the alley with Carmy.

DTGstl314

I think Mikey knew they were just being errand boys for Jimmy delivering some plastic widgets because of a FedEx strike, which is why he was making fun of Richie for being so excited about the trip and didn't share Richie's enthusiasm. Mikey is extremely in debt to Jimmy, so he knows that if Jimmy tells him he needs him to go do some trivial bullshit delivery job that he really doesn't have a choice.

Cee

For sure, that’s her

Cee

Yeah and it’s interesting because Mikey stalled on making the delivery, and created a whole day for him and Richie essentially. Richie says that jimmy has been calling him (Mikey) all day and that they could’ve made the delivery at any time basically. Seems like Mikey was trying to hold on the potential last day of it just being him and Richie, or at least the representation of their last day before Richie got whisked away to parenthood and family life. Mikey is jealous even if he doesn’t know it and doesn’t have the words to label it as such. Maybe he feels like life is passing him by, maybe he feels Richie has accomplished more than he ever will or all of the above. We seem him be conflicted the entire episode of whether he wants to hug Richie and hold on for dear life to his friend/family or if he wants to pummel him out of hatred (which is really ultimately self hatred). He lets it rip (pun intended) in the final bar scene. Unfortunately, Mikey doesn’t know how to apologize..we see him act just like Donna in the sense that no words are spoken he just tries to sweep it under the rug with a silent gesture. Carmy in all his growth is better than both of them in this regard in that he learns to verbally apologize to those around him, out of necessity (his relationship with Syd for example, heavily relies on his ability to apologize and admit when he’s wrong otherwise the restaurant will fail).

Badd Medicine

I don't believe they would do Richie like that either. I am not sure how many knew about this episode being released. Would be wild to bank on everyone knowing/watching to do that to a character. But, I guess we will find out.

DTGstl314

Marin Ireland is the actress' name. She's been in a whole bunch of stuff. Obviously not as big of a get as Jamie Lee Curtis, but she's yet another established actor who just showed up on The Bear. Really curious to see if we're gonna have any new cameos in the final season - we got Rob Reiner :( and Brie Larson last season, John Cena and a bunch of really famous chefs the year before, the whole Fishes ensemble and Olivia Colman in S2, Molly Ringwold in S1. Give us some more surprise guest stars on that way out!

PhatBoySteven

Ngl this episode hit a bit too close to home but man what an episode. Jon and Ebon are so damn good together. It breaks my heart seeing people feel like they need to go through depression or addiction alone rather than seeking help, especially from those closest to them.

DTGstl314

From some of the show notes I've seen, the car accident happened literally the morning after the S4 finale when Carm told Syd, Richie, and Nat that he was leaving the restaurant, and the season premiere will pick up immediately after Richie's car accident.

Tom Murray

Finishing this has me thinking of a pretty early beat in The Bear and how different it is from what happened here. There was a flashback season with Carmy, Mikey, Richie and Sugar and Mikey is telling some riot of a story of a Mikey + Richie adventure and everyone is having a great time laughing. Then it cuts to Richie retelling that same story to a date and just not getting her hooked in and engaged, and it's clear Richie doesn't have that spark and allure that Mikey had telling that story. It's even suggested that spark and being able to light up the room he walks into was 100% who Mikey was. If I had thought we'd get a story about Mikey and Richie where Mikey is bombing the social situation and Richie is the smile spreader, I'd be shocked as to how. It really feels like those roles were reversed. Mikey losing himself in the bathroom and Richie being the pulse of the bar. Now that I see it, I not only see how by why we had to see it. I think this episode was meant to give some color to Mikey's final years and death. This was 5 or 6 years before the end of S4 right? Mikey was STRUGGLING and his high with drugs made life make sense, and made his participation in life and existence itself meaningful. Sober Mikey was miserable no matter what face he puts on, and he was hiding that bathroom stall conversation behind his smiles and laughs. But reckon when he was using that concern wasn't in his head--his mind and behavior were aligned and things made sense. Addiction is a hell of a battle and one of its ugliest tricks is that an addict will believe that its the only solution to their privately kept problems. Add in generational hurt and difficulties like mental health, possibly Bipolar Disorder going through generations too, and it all just hurts to watch Still, we saw the snippets of core principles from Mikey and Richie all throughout here. Mikey always asking 'why' to identify meaning and MO's in everyone he talks with, finding the sparks and passions in everyone and being amazed about and stoked about. Unfortunately he needed to find his own big reasons and as far as we know, he either never found them or didn't stick around long enough to actualize them. And Richie being a people person and having great interactions. It's so easy to see how he fit right in with Front of House and being customer facing, re "Forks" and Super Bowls. It just shocks me that Richie talks about Mikey like he was always that guy to light up the room and keep everyone comfortable and happy, when he seems like he was that guy?

Well DD "HE DID SAY IT" about wanting a spin off with Jon Bernthal's character & seems like they heard ya haha! good seeing some more backstory with Mikey/Richie & how their friendship was, loved your reactions to their banter at each other, Richie pointing at the sign shouting "THAT F'N SIGN!!" & the story he told in the bar & your reactions to it was great, DD "You're not gonna use the ol' we've all been there" Oak "No I've never shit myself outside a Math Tutor's house" gave me a burst of unexpected laughter 🤣 but the contrast in the car journey there & back home & the different experiences they both had in that bar was fascinating to watch, both actors were phenomenal in their roles & (literally) hit us with a cliffhanger like that wetting our appetite for upcoming final season.

DTGstl314

This episode took place in early 2019, about three years before Mikey's suicide (February 2022). The pilot episode is set in June 2022, and the restaurant opens in late May 2023. Tiff's wedding is in September 2023, and the S4 ends a few weeks later.

DTGstl314

DD, unfortunately it does not appear that your plea for a Mikey spinoff had anything to do with this episode being made, because apparently it was filmed in April 2025 along with the reshoots on S4 (most of S4 was filmed simultaneously with S3 in 2024), which was well before you saw a single episode of this show. Kinda surprised they were able to keep this episode's existence a secret for a whole year.

DTGstl314

The episode was actually filmed in April 2025, so it's kind of surprising they were able to keep the whole thing under wraps for a whole year.

Lou_Lou

Really tough to watch, but would definitely be into seeing more episodes.

AllyBoo124

I decided to watch this by myself before sitting down to watch it with yall and now I don’t know if I can. There’s so much to say and like it’s so tragic and just so heartbreaking but something about the way they do it is so beautiful to me, like the way they show the pain. And everyone did amazing. Let me strap in for round two of this emotional car wreck

AllyBoo124

I wish I could like everyone’s comments omg

AllyBoo124

The first time I saw that still shot the phrase “scorched earth” came to mind for no reason and by the end of the episode I felt that it was what they were trying to portray. Just in like the self destruction aspect and Mikey being so mean to Richie. Burning bridges type of thing

AllyBoo124

It’s surprising to me that you guys were surprised with where we ended up in this episode. From the beginning I could tell that this wasn’t a Mike we had seen before and I could feel the tension. He was so rude and dismissive of Richie from the beginning and then to learn he hadn’t talked to jimmy all day and didn’t even charge his phone after it died. Like in his own way he wanted this day with his friend but couldn’t bring himself to admit it. And he’s already in this dark hole and things are changing for Richie and he’s probably jealous and scared that he’s gonna lose him, but Richie loves him so much and would’ve been there for him too. But I feel like you can tell we’re in the darker side of Mikey and I didn’t see him as responsible or a good friend this episode at all, which is what addiction combined with trauma can do to you. It was also sad because when you hear Richie talk about Michael you can tell how amazing he thought he was and how much he loved him and while I was watching I was like this is not the friend he was talking about

DTGstl314

Apparently the house where Mikey bought cocaine is located directly across the street from Michael Jackson's childhood home - it's behind the black fence seen behind Mikey when he gets out of the truck. It's a super tiny house - only 672 square feet, two bedrooms and one bathroom all shared by Joe, Katherine and their 9 children.

C. J. Ramirez

It’s a prequel. Before the events of season 1
