Everyone in this cast besides Rosario Dawson and Tracie Tomas were the original cast in the Broadway version from 1996 - 2008. Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel (Maureen) were married. Adam pascal (roger) sang in the Marvel play that was shown in Hawkeye that Clint and his children were watching. La Vie Bohem scene is exactly how they did it in the broadway version, same with Mimi’s “death” scene In my opinion i believe that Adam Pascal, Tracie Tomas and Jesse Martin have the best vocals in this musical. You should also definitely include the alternate ending :) the alternate ending is the ending for the broadway

patrick

Apparently unpopular opinion but I love this movie, its so great. Its obviously not as good as the actual musical but, in my opinion, NOT as bad as almost everyone says. Only thing I do hate and always will: They cut two songs from the movie. One called "Halloween" and its right before the funeral at the grave, and the actual song at the funeral (when they were all fighting) got cut short, there's a whole part more to it that explains a lot about Mimi. But it is in the deleted scenes, if you guys ever wanna check it out. But yea. Love the movie, its a 4.5/5 for me. Musical is better, obviously, but the movie is for movie-standards really good. And now I cannot wait for your reaction to tick... tick... Boom!😩😩

Kay

pls pls pls watch challengers with zendaya

Seen the musical 5 times and will always get tickets if it is playing locally. On long road trips I love putting the original broadway soundtrack on and singing along. Love the movie too (watched 10+ times) but of course the live production is better.

Ashley Johnson

In the deleted scenes there is an extra song after the funeral and you also find out Benny paid for Angel's funeral and helped get Mimi into rehab Also, now that you have seen rent watch Tick Tick Boom it is about Johnathon Larson the writer of Rent

One of the most iconic musicals of all time. I remember going to the theater every single weekend during my freshmen year of college to try for the lottery tickets and won twice! I sat front row watching Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp harmonise beautifully both times as they were back reprising their roles as Mark and Roger and it was heaven. The show closed later that year and I’ll forever miss it. I’m sure others have already mentioned but the majority of the main cast in this film are the OG Broadway cast, except Joanne and Mimi. Also the writer of the show Jonathan Larson passed away unexpectedly the day of the show’s first preview. He was only 35. The show is loosely inspired by the opera La Boheme and in the broadway version the entire thing is sung, no talking at all! Just like an opera.

If you're willing to give it a chance, there is a proshot of the final Broadway cast performance of Rent. It features Renee Elise Goldberry (Angelica in Hamilton) as Mimi!

My older sister introduced this movie musical to me when i was probably around 8 or 9 and because of that it has a very special place in my heart and is still one of my absolute favorites. I genuinely think it played a huge part in shaping me as a person. I still cry when Collins is singing at Angel’s funeral. Everytime lol

Carolyn a

Wow! I'm surprised you all didn't love this musical. I guess it is more of a "traditional" musical than what you have watched in the past. But it's one of the most popular musicals out there

JJ

Tick Tick Boom next!

Vonnie Stewart

yall math aint mathin' lol! only need 3 kisses a day for a year to get to 1000

Leigh Marx

Waiting for the guys to watch the Broadway version of Newsies

Evan

I saw rent on broadway in londan during 1998, most of original cast. Love the movie but to see it live in person is much better. Everything is more in your face. Ps: the actual crowd moo's during Maureen s performance on broadway.

Re: Oak's question in the outro: I saw Rent on Broadway with the original cast, and it was an extremely powerful experience -- because we were still in the AIDS crisis, and anyone who was part of the creative world had lived through too many friends' deaths in the 80s/90s. As for watching the stage show: there is a professionally filmed video of this musical on Broadway (very much like Hamilton was filmed) that you could have watched instead of this - it's in the recommendations on the website. I'm sure there was a good reason for choosing the movie over the filmed stage show, but it's a shame - this is not a good adaptation, for so many reasons. Just going with the original cast is part of it. They have people who are in their 40s playing people who must, for the entire purpose of the narrative, be in their 20s, and that blows it for me right out of the gate. They should have had a brand-new, age-appropriate cast for the movie - could have had a whole new RENT for first-time viewers. If anyone wants to see more about how this film adaptation fell down, and how the show itself has aged somewhat poorly, I recommend Lindsay Ellis' video: "RENT - Look Pretty and Do As Little as Possible: A Video Essay" (in which she also touches on Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, Les Miserables, Spring Awakening, and more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0qfFbtIj5w

Evan

Might of been 97, but most of original cast was in it. Adam pascal had short hair during the broadway show

Rent is good in theory but the music is some of the worst on Broadway 😂 Only Rent, Maureen's Tango, What You Own, Seasons of Love, and Take me or Leave Me sound good and there's 42 songs in the musical LOL. And then on top of that it's just awkward, random, and weirdly boring all at the same time. I feel like it's really good for people who are from New York. I swear this is how every musical that New Yorkers REALLY love is like this for some reason 🤣

Mackenzie OReally Bravo

Absolutely elated that you watched one of my favorite musicals ❤️ definitely unexpected with no context. I will be singing ~will I lose my dignity~ the rest of the evening. Shocked not one comment about how great Roger's voice is 😅

Jeremy Burch

I've never had the chance to see this on Broadway, but I have seen the touring production when it was here where I live, I've also seen amateur productions, recorded versions and the Fox live concert thing, I've watched a lot of versions of Rent and have always loved it and the music in it, I agree with anyone saying the stage or proshot versions are better than the movie, but that being said I've still always really loved the movie. I've also always thought if you plan on watching multiple versions, you should always start with the movie than watch stage productions, it gives you a better shot of enjoying the movie and than loving the stage version. If you start with the stage version than often you'll be unhappy with songs cut or changes made, making it less likely you'll enjoy both. However if you only ever intend to watch it once, you should try to see the stage version.

kimberley

omg they cut the goodbye love scene

MandaM

Before I start can anybody tell me how badly they didn't (or did) like it lmao. I love this musical so so much (And, as stated by a few others, of course the actual musical is better but I do really love the movie also because it introduced me to it)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

The scores are ok but they're not going to be what you're hoping for. They should have watched the film of the Broadway production instead.

Cassandra

I really was in my room at 12 years old BELTING both parts of light my candle having no idea what I was even saying 😂😂😂😂 obsessed with that song still to this day

Victoria 🌱

Y’all dropped this already too oh my god let’s fucking GO

MandaM

Yeah definitely. I actually have the DVD so I wonder if it's easy to find online. Granted it's not the original cast sadly, but it's still pretty good

Saphthings

I was a closeted gay teenager, dealing with ptsd from my childhood, living with a family that would never accept me, and we rented this movie without knowing what it'd be like. It got left while everyone went to work and so on, and I put it on. I had never even seen a story with gay characters. The way this movie shaped me, joining drama club, friends, compassion. This movie is a core memory for me.

Lauren

That final shot of Angel always gives me chills.

Lauren

I think it’s so important that when you make a movie from a musical, you have to adapt to its new medium. That’s probably why this movie got mixed reviews. By the way, if you want to really have a meta experience, you should watch “The Producers” with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. It’s a movie based on a play based on a movie, lol.

Wow we are really eating good this week with the drops! I love Rent. I was very fortunate to see this on Broadway as a young teen and it's one of my favorite musicals. It really re-enforces how powerful chosen family can be. Anyway, I feel like people either love or hate the film adaptation and I fall into the former category. MQ, you are absolutely right that you experience a lot of whiplash when it comes to the high highs and low lows of the story. It's actually a bit of a running joke for Rent lovers that you'll be shimmying in your seat to the music one minute, then bawling the next. I like it though. I think it's representative of the characters' reality. So glad you all decided to react to this one. RIP Angel. 🕊️

Miya

Sorry to spam the comments, but wanted to add that Rent is an adaptation of the Puccini opera, La Bohème (which I've also seen live and think is phenomenal). You can see many elements of the opera in this iteration, like the leads' names (swapping "Rodolfo" for "Roger" and Mimi's name remains the same) and the banger of a song La Vie Bohème where Musetta's Waltz is mentioned, which a song in La Bohème.

Miya

Very much disagree with this take and I'm not from NYC lol.

Knightmare

Most people disagree it's beloved as hell 😂

So I’m on the What You Own scene and holy moly guys, watching this again reminded me just how unimpressed I was with this film when I saw it for the first time in the 2010s. I watched the final Broadway performance proshot during the 2020 lockdown (it was free on Youtube) and I absolutely fell in love with it. God, that proshot in my opinion is The best presentation of RENT. The choices made adapting the show to screen fall completely flat for me here - the characters’ relationships with each other, the pacing, the overall direction. I love you Chris Columbus - the movie feels like it drudges along, I found myself yearning for more energy, more from these apparent 20-somethings who’re living in fear and uncertainty of tomorrow and the emotional themes only hitting just enough to make the worth it. I love this musical so damn much, god I love the music. These performances aren’t doing it, and I think it’s the direction and general feel they wanted to interpret. This adaptation just doesn’t do it for me, but I’m glad more people know about Rent cuz of it.

Aubrey

I saw this adaptation of Rent before I saw the play, which I've now seen twice. I don't love this adaptation, so I wasn't super excited to go the first time, but I was gifted lower orchestra seats for a national tour and couldn't say no. One thing you should know about me is that I'm a sympathetic crier. I had goosebumps the whole time, and I was a gd mess the second half of the show. The theater experience is just an entirely different beast, and I encourage you to check it out if you ever have the opportunity!

KJ

I saw the musical fall 1996 and spring 1997 in Boston which was it's first tour stop after Broadway. I think they did an OK job with the movie, but this really is meant to be on stage and experienced live.

Maisie

I'm not a huge fan of Rent, but One Song Glory just hits me in the gut every time I hear it, with or without context.

Kat D.

Is Next to Normal on their musical tbd list? The one with Jack Wolfe on Prime?

Midgey_M

I'm going to put my two cents in here. I have seen the stage show probably close to a dozen times and I can honestly admit that the stage version is much better. Probably a quarter of the songs were left out of the film. I do love the film, but it just does not do justice to the stage show. There is a version called Rent: Live on Broadway which I believe is on Prime. It is literally the stage version on film as if they put a couple of cameras on the stage. It will give you all of the songs and you will know more of the story. Five of the seven main cast members of the movie were in the OG Broadway run back in the 90s.
